I am looking for information on Archie Brass and his wife Gailbirth Lazara. Assuming they were born something around 1857. Not sure where they may have been born, but their son, John H Brass was born 1877 in Florida. The death certificate for John H Brass shows his parents as Archie Brass and Gailbirth Lazara.

Just new on to this site and it's great to see all the information on our Brass Family! I have been looking on other sites for some time now without success. My Grandmother was Jane Julia Sheppard. On her death certifcate her father was listed as William Brass born in Scotland. Her mother was listed as Mariah Wolson born in Manitoba. On Jane's death certificate her birth date was listed as April 3, 1867 and birthplace Manitoba. It looks to me that we are talking about the same Brass family but I am wondering where the name Wolson on Jane's Death Cert. came from? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

This is probably a long-shot but I just came across your posts and was curious if you have come across any more information regarding Lahrs from Darmstadt? My great-great-grandmother was a Barbara Lahr who was born in Darmstadt around 1848 and was married to Charles Zugenbuehler near Dubuque, Iowa in the 1860's. I know nothing about her prior to her marriage, except that she came from Darmstadt, and have not been able to find any records, so when I saw your posts I wondered if it was possible she came from the same family?
Again, I know this is a long-shot, but just had to give it a try! Thank you in advance for any information you might have.

Kaylan

Margaret,

Janna, Bonnie, you and I all have links back to John Brass and Catherine Kirkness of Sandwick, Orkney. In your case Catherine Brass who married John Irvine was the daughter of Alexander Brass and Margaret Brass. Alexander was a son of John Brass and Catherine Kirkness.

I have a tree of many of these Brass families. My aim is to put all the Scottish Brasses (most of whom have links back to Orkney)in one tree but lack of time is the big constraint!

Kind regards,

Stuart

I see that Willie N. Brass is the brother of Abner and my husbands Great Grandfather. I also have found it interesting that some of the Brass's are also referred to as McBrass. However I wonder if that is a type, it could be the middle initial is M. and it was interpreted that way. Their mother is Loroza and I can't find anything about her.
Willie and Abner's father was John Brass 1816 -1905.

I find that whole family very interesting because of where they lived and what they did. My husband remembers hearing stories of the towns they lived in as they moved from one logging area to another. It appears when the logging companies moved they took the buildings with them.

They are residents of Lakeview Nursing Home and have been named residents of the month. Louis remembers the day he and Minnie first spoke to each other. It was the day his widower father remairred. Louis' new stepmother happened to be Minnie's aunt. There was a weding reception party, with games for the children out on the lawn.

"Minnie was my partner for a game. She came over and took my arm,. That was the beginning!" he says.

Minnis says she never had another boyfriend.

They would go together to church every week - the East Friesland Presbyterian Church. They were the first couple to be married in that church, 63 years ago.

Louis was born on January 18, 1904 in Osceola County, the son of Wilbert and Florence Ebeling. The family moved to Rushmore in 1913, and his mother died when he was 14, in 1918. Louis' father was married to Hattie Brass in 1921. They farmed near Wilmont and Bigelow. Louis had two half brothers, two half sisters, one brother and six sisters he was the second oldest. Louis remembers the shool, before a church edifilce was built. It was used for school during the week and for church services on Sunday, until a churchwas built.

Louis and Minne were married February 27, 1929. They had two children, a daughter Joyce Burk, now of Rushmore and a son, Arvid of Eagle Lake. There a five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. They retired from farming and moved into Rushmore in 1969. They are newcomers at Lakeview, admitted together on April 10, 1992.

Minne was born August 6, 1905, at Oakley, Ia, the daughter of George and Ella Elsing. She was the oldest child of a family of six girls and two boys.

Rushmore has always been her home community.

A sociable and friendly couple, they often have visitors at their new home in Lakeview. They can say that they have shared memories and friencships nearly all of their lives beginning as childhood sweethearts.

Congratulations on your selection as residents of the month, Louis and Minnie. We hope you enjoy your new family at Lakeview.
Dear Susan, I recently reviewed some old correspondence as I'm renewing my genealogy research after several years. I have an old email from you regarding my grandfather. I have recently learned a bit more about him. I always thought his name was William but it seems it was actually Willie N (Nigel or Niels?). He died in 1925 rather than '23. His dad was Archibald or Archie, Not sure.

I would appreciate any additional info you may have. Thanks.

hi, Jim. I recently ran across an email you posted 10 years ago about research into the Brass family. I thought that I had emailed you once before but could find no record of it.
My dad was also a Jim Brass. His great grandfather (I think) was John Brass born in England about 1818. I;ve not been able to narrow that down to a specific location. He immigrated to Canada in maybe the 1930's. He married a Canadian girl named Mary. I haven't been able to find out anything more about her.
They had one son, Nigel, born in Canada. Eventually they moved to Iowa then on to Florida.
Does anyone on your family tree fit this description?

Re: BRASS - LAHR descendants from Hesse Darmstadt, Germany

Hi Jay,

This was very helpful and gave me some information to fill in on my tree regarding the Ammann and Mueller family members connected to my Lahr family. (My mother, Mary Claire Lahr, is the great-granddaughter of the Rev. Conrad S. Lahr of Juda, WI). Thanks for putting Dorothy's letter on the site! No, I haven't been able to get any additional information on our mutual ancestor, Mrs. Elizabeth Mueller Lahr of Offstein. Both I and Dick Ammann (my half 4th cousin - that sounds funny!) have communicated through the years (between Chicago and Racine) about her and neither of us has managed to determine her surname. I'd hoped that my gr-gr-gr grandfather Rev. Lahr's handwritten autobiographical pages' reference to his having stayed with his mother's sister in Albany, NY upon Conrad's 1852 arrival in the US would have proven to be some help, research-wise, but it lead me nowhere. It's one of the most frustrating blanks on my tree.

Thanks again, Jay, for the input you provided here!

Best ~

Kath Bienemann Cunningham/
Chicago

Re: BRASS - LAHR descendants from Hesse Darmstadt, Germany

My great-great-great grandfather was Jacob Mueller, Rev. Conrad Lahr's half-brother. Below are some references to the Lahr's in a family history tale as told by my great grandmother Dorothy Ammann Hoth sometime in the 1950s.

Did you ever discover the name of Conrad's mother? I get some references to Elizabeth, but not much else other than your mention of Brass. I hope you enjoy the read.

Jay Weiss

Ammann Family History, by Dorothy Ammann Hoth

Peter Ammann was my father’s father. He lived in Meisenheim, Germany. Peter, Philip and Charlie Ammann were brothers. Philip and Charlie were my father’s uncles. Philip was Bertha Nelson’s father, and the husband of Aunt Margaret. Charlie was a Civil War soldier. He lived at the Milwaukee old soldier’s home.
Philip and Auntie Margaret lived in the 1200 block of Grand Avenue in Racine. Uncle Charlie lived on the northwest corner of 12th and Center Streets in Racine. Charlie, dad’s uncle, was a jolly fellow. We loved him. He used to come to Racine on visits and stayed with Uncle Philip and Aunt Margaret.
Uncle Philip, Bertha Nelson’s father, was my father’s uncle, but Bertha’s mother was also my mother’s aunt, or our Grandmother Mueller’s sister. So Auntie Margaret and Uncle Philip were my aunt and uncle in two ways.
My father had two sisters, Caroline and Anna. He had four brothers, Peter, August, Henry, and Jacob.
My mother’s parents were Jacob and Elizabeth Mueller. Grandma Mueller was a Baesler before marriage. She had one brother, Uncle Charlie Baesler, who was a Civil War veteran and lived at the northwest corner of 12th and Villa Streets in Racine. Her sister was Auntie Margaret Ammann, Philip’s wife and Bertha Nelson’s mother.
Both my Grandmother Elizabeth Baseler Mueller and her brother Chris were born on October 18th, Elizabeth first and Chris three years later. This date is the same as my birthday, October 18th, 1895. Grandma and Grandpa Mueller were both Hessians, born in Darmstadt, Germany.
My mother’s name was Margaret [sic] Elizabeth. I have a daughter and a granddaughter named Margaret [sic] Elizabeth.
Grandpa Jacob Mueller and his wife always lost their babies while still in Germany, either by birth or miscarriage. So Auntie Barbara Augustine wrote to them to come to Racine, and they came in July 1857. They lived with Aunt Barbara until after my mother was born, on December 15, 1857. Then they bought the land, barn, and old house at 1109-1113 Villa Street. They always thanked the U.S.A. for saving their two babies, my mother and her brother.
Grandpa and Grandma always told us these stories and ended by saying, “Love your good country. It’s the best in the world.”
Grandpa Mueller’s father died when he was a little fellow. His mother married again, to a Lahr. So Uncle Conrad Lahr, Ruth Lahr Schneider’s grandfather, is Grandpa Mueller’s half brother. So Aunt Barbara Augustine is Grandpa Mueller’s half sister, but she is a full sister to Conrad Lahr. They all have the same mother. They all loved each other very much.
Aunt Barbara Augustine had three sons, John, Theodore, and Albert Augustine. These three are my mother’s first cousins, as Bertha Nelson is a cousin.
Conrad Lahr had three sons, Ben, Bert, and Sam Lahr. Sam is Ruth Lahr’s father. Conrad was an Evangelist. He performed my brother Bill’s wedding ceremony.
When my father first came to this country from Germany he lived in New York a couple of years with his sister. Then he came to Racine and lived with Aunt Margaret and Uncle Philip Ammann, where he met my mother. She used to help Aunt Margaret with her babies. Aunt Margaret Ammann had two girls and one boy, Bertha, Lillie, and John.
I loved Aunt Margaret, because Uncle Philip told me she looked like Grandma Mueller, who died two years before I was born. So Aunt Margaret was sort of like my grandmother to me.

Susan,
I just read you message. I have been trying to get more information on my father's family. My dad was named James Henry Brass. He was born in Brooksville, FL in 1917, I think. Apparently, there was some confusion about his birthdate and the birthdate of a cousin who died in the flu epidemic of 1919. Daddy wasn't much of a talker but I guess he told Mama that he father, William, was a county sheriff who died in a car wreck in the early 1920's.
I sure would appreciate any info you might have.

Thanks,
Nannette Brass

Hi. My name is Sidney Brass. My father was James Brass. He was born in Florida in 1917. His father William was born in Canada. Grandfather John was born in England (maybe Somerset)and migrated to Canada in mid 1800's. Do you have any info on these folks?
Sidney

Hi. My name is Sidney Brass. I have been trying to trace my father's ancestry. I think I've traced his great grandfather, John Brass to Somerset. He may have immigrated to Canada sometime between 1825-1835. That's as far as I got. Any info on Brasses from Somerset?

Thanks,
Sidney
