My maternal gg-grandmother was Sofronia (Fronie) High Braswell b. between 1843-46 and d. 12/26/1928 in Anson Co, NC. She had at least 4 children Joseph and Robert b.1880(Robert apparently died before 1890), Kiah b.1881, Stacy Marvin b.1885. Their father was a Daniel Braswell. I have found some family trees for several people where Kiah is listed as Kerr. Does anyone have any info on Daniel Braswell or Kiah Braswell, my g-grandfather?

Hi I am David Braswell Joseph Graysons grandson. I have now read the second inquiry about him and his first son. He married my grandmother in 1891 in Morganton N.C. He then had 4 sons and 2 daughters. I knew 3 sons and 1 daughter that lived. I am having trouble finding who his mother and father were. A lot of the trees put him in Stoney creek Tenn. but I believe he grew up in Burke, Caldwell, and maybe Mitchell county. I can account for him from 1900 thru his death in 1950 but the early years are confused. If you have found any informtion please e-mail me at ukbrazz@aol.com. Thanks I have been spinning my wheels for a few months and only heard of Mr. Loudermelt recently.

Zilpha Emily Braswell - Billington Ragan - GA/FL

I am seeking info on my 3rd great grandfather, Billington Ragan b. 1835 and who was listed as an overseer on the Wm. G. Ponder plantation north of Tallahassee in Leon County, FL in 1860. At the time he was married to Zilpha Emily Braswell.

I have seen a couple of unsourced reports claiming that he was murdered by a slave and there was a post back in 1997 with a notation from a family Bible showing a date of death of 25 Dec 1860.

As of time of the 1870 census, his daughter, Caroline Ragan, was residing with her maternal grandparents in Thomas County, Georgia, which is adjacent to Leon County, Florida. I presume from this that both of her parents had died at some point subsequent to the 1860 census; nevertheless there are other posted trees showing a subsequent marriage by a Billington Ragan to Nancy Ann Varnadoe in 1866 and this marriage produced three children. There are also Civil War records showing a Billington Ragan in a Georgia unit who apparently survived the war.

Either the Billington Ragan who married Zilpha Emily Braswell lost his life subsequent to the 1860 census, either by murder or otherwise, or else he survived past that time and allowed his only daughter to reside with his in-laws for some reason even after his re-marriage to another woman, with whom he had three other children.

I am also wondering whether anyone has any information as to the death of Zilpha Emily Braswell subsequent to the 1860 census.

Any information that anyone has will be greatly appreciated!

BRASWELL, Katie (1889-abt.1909) Edgecombe (perhaps Nash) Co., NC

I am looking for more information on a KATIE BRASWELL (1889-ca.1909), who married HENRY PROCTOR (1889-1968) in 1908 in Edgecombe Co., NC.

According to a listing in "North Carolina Marriages, 1759-1979" both Katie and Henry were born in 1889, and were married on 23 Dec 1908 in No. Thirteen Twp, Edgecombe, NC. Katie apparently died between the date of the marriage and 1910, as Henry Proctor (age 21) was listed as "widowed" in the 1910 Census. (Henry remarried in 1911 to Mary Ella Hinton. They were my grandparents.)

Any leads on KATIE, how and when she died, was it in childbirth, did the child survive, her family/siblings, etc., etc. would be most appreciated!

Grover B.
from the Mobile, Alabama Newspaper

Thurs., Sept. 22, 1910

--"Walker Braswell, the 4-year-old son of Robert Braswell, a well-known Dauphin Street druggist of this city, met a sudden and tragic death under the wheels of Dauphin street car No. 55 at 3:30 Wednesday afternoon while playing in front of his home. J.A. Lee, conductor, W.J. White, motorman and W.H. Davis, sub-motorman, the crew of the car, were arrested immediately after the accident by Deputy Sheriffs Delchamps and Lee. The grief stricken parents had the body prepared for burial by the Roche Undertaking establishment. ...

"It was one of those accidents that occur even if every care is taken. ... A crowd of children, playing in the street, a street car coming along at moderate speed, a small child trying to get to the other side, a call from its companions, a halt, a crunch and a tender body crushed, with its companions gazing horror stricken."

Not my line, just sharing.

I'm sorry, I have to revise my query. Jesse and Rebecca were in Edgefield Co., SC, at least between 1814 and 1822. The census Jesse was on was the 1820 census, not the 1810.
Thanks, Mary

On the 1810 Census of Edgefield Co., SC, there is a Jesse Braswell who land records prove was married to Rebecca. By 1820, he is gone. He did not appear before 1810 on the Edgefield census. Does anyone know if Jesse who married Rebecca Blow was in SC before his move to GA?
Re: Braswells in North Carolina

Hello - my great grandfather was John S. Braswell (don't know what the "S" stood for), who was sheriff of Richmond County, NC, for many years.

Of course I am trying to fill in all the blanks without a lot of first-hand information. But I have a question for you, and I hope you don't mind answering. Your posts seem to indicate that you are quite knowledgable about acquiring and using information for family histories.

What is the proper way to list someone's death? In my great ggrandfather's case, he was a resident of Richmond County, but he died in the Moore County hospital. Of course the death certificate and information I've found for him online lists Moore County. Unfortunately, I've listed his place of ddeath here on Ancestry.com as Richmond County, which may confuse people. Is there a protocol for this? A proper way to inidcate someone's last residence vs. place of death? Thanks for your help. Sorry to bother you ---

Carolyn Phillips
Greensboro, NC

There are so many Braswells and Elizabeths during that time I am not sure which line may be hers. Thank you!

Robert, Samuel, William, and Sarah Ann Mims Braswell -- Georgia

Hell's Broke Loose in Georgia: Survival in a Civil War Regiment (Paperback)
Scott Walker (Author)

In the index of the above book on Amazon.com, I saw MANY pages about Robert, Samuel, Sarah Ann Mims Braswell, and William (Bill) Braswell.

The 311 page book is about the Civil War -- 57th Georgia Infantry. Go to Amazon.com and type in title "Hells Broke Loose in Georgia: Survival in a Civil War Regiment.

One bit from the Amazon page about the book:

"Scott Walker has produced history that is at the same time very old and quite new. He relies upon a rich trove of letters and diaries to focus his narrative upon the coming-of-age experiences and vivid observations of men and boys who served in the Fifty-seventh Georgia Infantry Regiment. Walker also offers a species of the 'new' military history—a drama set in blood and mud instead of command posts in which common soldiers instead of generals are the principal characters. This is an excellent book.”--Emory M. Thomas, author of Robert E. Lee and The Confederate Nation"

Both new and used books are available on amazon.com. As of today, the prices for new and used run $12 to $30. If anyone has Braswell family living in Georgia during the Civil War -- about 1861-1865, some information might be found in this book.

If you don't want to buy a copy of the book without viewing it, you could probably get it from your local library on inter-library loan or even find it used on some Internet site for very little. I buy many books on line and have been very satisfied, and I have saved tons of money.

I don't have any Braswell connections but just happened to view the book and noticed many pages about Braswell people.

You can view the index of the book on amazon.com, so you might find other Georgia family names. Hope this helps someone.

I know this was posted 9 years ago, but I just recently found this family. I think William Nicholas Braswell was married to Mary Elizabeth Hinson, my ggg-grandmother's sister. My ggg-grandmother was Nancy Caroline Hinson, w/o Miles Sessions Parker, d/o William Marion Hinson and Nancy Northcutt.
I found the Braswell's in the 1900 Falls County, TX census, with Mary as a widow, having given birth to 9 children with 7 living at that time. I went back through the censuses to 1880 Brazos County, TX and found her with William and 2 children. Going from 1880, 1900, 1910 and 1920 I found her living with various children and have compiled the following names for children, in no particular order of birth:
William Andrew, Edward George, Emma, Bettie, Walter, Aaron, Joseph B, Alice H and Robert Henry. Do any of these names mean anything to you?
Looking forward to hearing from you
Cassandra K Wade [Parker descendant]

If I can ID this Kenneth(?) it would likely go a long way toward carrying my William Brazzil line back another generation. Any help or leads appreciated.

Hello Gary,
I am descended from a William Britt b. ca 1760, d. 1812 in Edgecomb Co. NC. Married unknown woman and had my gg grandfather Braswell Britt. Braswell is too unusual a first name to pull out of thin air. Perhaps a connection to your Mary Braswell b. c 1777 who is 7 yrs Williams junior and the about the right age for a bride. It's also unlikely that Braswell had no siblings, perhaps John J. Britt is one of them. John J. would be about 12 years older than Braswell who was born c1810. Do you know the names of your William Britt's descendants?
Matthew Britt

I am researching for my sister-in-law. Her great-grandmother was Arthusa Braswell who married Timothy Prichard probably in DeKalb Co, TN. She was born in 1859 in TN. Her husband must have died before she did, as an old woman, she would visit her daughter in Tillman Co, OK. She is thought to be buried in Tillman County. Any information appreciated.
