Not sure about Carter Braxton and Estelle.

I've been able to track my family back to a free black couple named George and Vena Braxton. George was born in 1810 and Vena was born in 1830 in Henrico County.

I'm trying to see if there's a connection to Abram Braxton of New Kent who I also found on the 1809 Tax Roles as beig head of a household with 5 other free negroes with 2 being boys under 14.

Is it possible that George who was born in 1810 was the son of Abram?

Jeanette - We continue trying to make connection to Carter but cannot get past the brickwall; which is caused by not being able to find name of the father of my GG-GFather Oliver O. Braxton, Sr. He is listed in 1850 Census of Henry County, Al.; which indicates that he was born 1798 in South Carolina. Many thanks, William C. Braxton, Jr.

Information on Braxton Family Virginia/Louisiana

Hello, my name is Alicia Miles-Bax and I am the gggg granddaughter of Griffin (Griffen) Braxton. I am trying to compile as much information as I can about my family, but am having some trouble locating the names of a few people and/or their ending whereabouts. My grandfather was Daniel Braxton, of Mossville, LA, the son of Lee (Alees) Braxton. His father was Augustus Braxton, who was the son of Jackson Braxton and Eda (Edith) Lyons. My mother does not know a lot about this side of her family because due to some differences, she was given away and raised by her grandmother, Victoria Brooks Gassaway Scott, of Mossville, LA. Most of my older relatives who would have more information have all since passed away and I never had the chance to meet my grandfather...which I regret deeply because I have been told I look like him. This is also an attempt for me to reach out to the Braxtons that I have never or yet met. In my lifetime, I have only met my mother's aunt, Myrtle Braxton Reado, and that was for my grandfather's funeral in 2005. Any information will help. Thanks!!

Jeanette,

I have Carter Braxtons family tree back to the first RECORDED Braxton name in 1530 in Whitchurch, England.

I am trying to verify whether or not we descended thru Carter - as we have been told that we did; however as of this date we have been unable to prove the name of the FATHER of my GG-GFather Oliver O. Braxton, Sr. and his brother Walter Holland. Without being able to penetrate this brickwall, we are unable to prove from whom we descended.

I have taken the 12-marker DNA genealogical test and am presently seeking a known/proven descendent of Carter to match his DNA with mine. Any help or information would be very much appreciated. Many thanks,

William Braxton, 5088 Braxton Ln., Pace, Fl. 32571-8957
==========================================================

Jeanette - I've done extensive search trying to make a connection to Carter, including his family tree going back to 1540 in Whitchurch, England.

Based on my search the only possible connection to Carter would have been through one of the three of his eldest sons: GEORGE-CORBIN or Carter, Jr.(The other remaining three sons would have been too young). All three of these son's of Carter were born during the 1760 period.

The only connection to Carter and my line of Braxton's would have been by one the three son's; who would have been the father of my GG-GFather Oliver O. Braxton, Sr.

According to the 1850 census of Henry County, Al. Oliver was born 1798. During this period all three of the son's
of Carter would have been in the 30 year old age group; which(Age-wise) would have been possible for either of them to have been the Father of Oliver.

My search indicates that neither of the three had a connection to my GG-GFather Oliver O, Braxton

NOTE: My not being a profesional geanologist I may have missed an important clew, and I challenge anyone to take-up-the-search. William C. Braxton

I am an 8th generation descendant of Abram Braxton of New Kent, Virginia. His records go back to the 1810 census, in which he and his family were free black residents. There are rumors that he was the son of Carter Braxton and a slave named Estelle. Anyone have any information to confirm or debunk this claim?

Hi Jeanette, I'd like to see a copy of your draft outline of Carter Braxton.....I happened upon him as I was adding people and info into the Gradner/Hall Tree. I'd be especially interested in his children and your earlier portion too on the Sarah Ludlow lineage.
I've been so impressed with my Virginia lineage roots.
So far I've found that I'm related to everyone from Virginia that signed the Declaration of Independence except for Thomas Jefferson (but I'm early on researching them and I may, hopefully, find him in my family yet - Surely with all these Virginia First Family Roots someone had to marry in the Thomas Jeffersonian lineage somewhere)
Richard Henry Lee • Francis Lightfoot Lee
• Carter Braxton • Benjamin Harrison
• George Wythe • Thomas Nelson, Jr.
are all part of the family...though very distantly, but still part of the family
I'd sure like to find a connection to Th. Jefferson so that I'd complete the sweep of Virginia with a relationship to all of them.
my email address = itshockey@gmail.com
Thanks, Thomas Marshall Schwarztrauber
Deborah - I dont know the numnber of slaves that Carter had, however I met a descendent of one; while serving aboard USS F D Roosevelt (CVA-15). As it happened:
We were on deployment operating in the Mediterranean
during 1964. I received a letter addressed to me
William C. Braxton. When I opened and read part, I
realized that it could not have been written to me. I called
the post office to determine whether there was another William C. Braxton assigned aboard - and was told that
there was and he was attached to one of the aircraft squadrons that was temporarily attached aboard for the deployment. I called the squadron office, and the person answered by identifying himself as: "Braxton speaking".
I asked if his name was William C. Braxton. He answered affirmative and I told him that my name was also William C. Braxton, and that I had just received a letter that could not have been intended for me. I asked him to come down to the supply office; that I wanted to meet and give him the letter. During our conversation, I asked if he knew the beginning of his Braxton name. He replied "yes" and that his GGGG-GFather was a slave of Carter Braxton.

I am trying to locate my great grandfather's parents. Unfortunately, this was not something that was talked about in my family considering he died when my dad was 12. I decided to post because there are only 3 remaining of my Great Grandfather's children (out of 13). My dad passed in 2005 and I have no answers about my family.

My great Grandfathers name is James Henry Braxton born in Colesville Montgomery County Maryland in Dec 22 1895 (per his WW1 registration card), he was listed on the 1900 census (age 4)in Montgomery County Maryland residing with an Aunt & Uncle (Martha Nelson & David T Nelson) and Edward Braxton listed as a nephew (age 7, perhaps a brother)then in 1910 (age 14) with an Aunt Sarah E. Lee. He went in the Army Drafted in 1917 and served from 1918-1919. He had 13 children (I can only name 5 to include my dad) with Cecelia L. Ford born April 8, 1907 in Baltimore, Maryland which I have no proof of marriage either which I assume was done since she's entered with him at Arlington Cemetary. The address listed on his registration card is 1336 Cedar Street NW DC which no longer exhists in the 1300 block but maybe due to DC changing it's boarder since there is a 1336 Cedar Street just above DC now considered Silver Spring, MD and Colesville is now Silver Spring, MD.

He died on Jan 1, 1956 and she in 1981 both he and Cecelia are buried in Arlington Cemetary. I would like to find his parents which according to the census were both born in Maryland.I also located two parental consent forms for his two eldest daughters to marry at 16 and the address as 717 Pleasent Court NW Washington, DC. I call the National Archives in Maryland and Vital Statistics and no record before 1914 is on file for him nor will Vital Statistis release that information to me since im not an immediate family member. His SSN is listed on the SS Death Index but there are occasions when looking for this information it was listed as 1896 and 1899 as his birth year which isn't accurate since I saw his writting on his military registration card which also stated he was employed as a Teamster at M. Goldman's (june 5, 1917).

Have you any luck?

Carter Braxton -b.1736 Va.- son of George & Mary (Carter) Braxton

from a book found on HeritageQuestOnline.com – not in my line as far as I know

Title: The history of the Blair, Banister, and Braxton families before and after the Revolution
Authors: Horner, Frederick,
City of Publication: Philadelphia:
Publisher: Printed by J.B. Lippincott Co.,
Date: 1897
Page Count: 275
Notes: Reproduction of original in the Sutro Library.
ill., ports.
Reel/Fiche Number: (Genealogy and local history; G8784).
Subject Headings: Banister family
Primary Family Name: Blair family. / Bannister family. / Braxton family.

Part III – The Braxton Family

-found on Page 122
The founder of the Braxton family in America was George Braxton, according to Dr. J.M. Toner, of Washington City, a trader or tobacco agent. He married the daughter of the so-called “King Carter,” of Virginia, settled on the Mattapony River, in King William County, Va., and built ‘Newington,’ where now ‘West Point; is located and is the seat of a large and important shipping trade. He was the father of George and Carter Braxton, the latter a signer of the Declaration of Independence. They have many descendants in King and Queen County, Va., and others scattered over the United States. Braxton County, W.Va., was named in honor of the family.

-found on Page 124
Carter Braxton was born at ‘Newington,’ on the Mattapony, in King and Queen County, Va., September 10, 1736, and died October 10, 1797, in the city of Richmond, Va. His father, George Braxton, was a wealthy planter, who married Mary, the daughter of Robert Carter, president of the council of the colony of Virginia, and in 1748 represented the county of King and Queen, being the colleague of John (known as Speaker) Robinson. Carter Braxton, whose ancestors were of English origin, was educated at the college of William and Mary. In the history of the institution and Catalogue of Alumni the name first appears in 1720; that of Carter Braxton in 1756. He inherited upon his father’s death a large estate. He graduated at William and Mary College at the age of nineteen. He married Judith, daughter of Christopher Robinson, of Middlesex. She dying in 1757, Mr. Braxton visited England, where he remained for several years, and returned in 1760. He married, in 1761, Elizabeth Corbin. He built a mansion at Elsin Green, on the Pamunkey, and another at Chericoke. He lived in a style of lavish hospitality, according to the fashion of that day. In 1761 he was a burgess from King William, and took an active part in the session of 1765. His colleague was Bernard Moore, son-in-law of Governor Spottswood.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Chapter IV – Historical Data Connected with the Braxton Family During the Present Century
-found on pages 157-162

Rev. C.B. Bryan has furnished to the author the subjoined data connected with the Braxtons:

“My connection with the Braxton family is merely nominal. General Corbin Braxton (Also M.D.), of Chericoke, King William County, was a great friend and favorite of my father and mother. He and my mother’s brother. St. George Coalter, married sisters, my uncle marrying Judy and ‘Uncle Corbin’ (as we called him) marrying Mary Tomlin. So it came about through the intimacy of our families that I was named after this gentleman, General (and Dr.) Corbin Braxton. He and his wife, Mary Tomlin, had (that I know of) two sons and three daughters, as follows:
(1.) Jack, married a daughter of Hon. Allen T. Caperton, and has issue. He lives in Hanover, I think.
(2.) Armistead, married [Miss Garlick] of Lynchburg. His widow is living and has issue, sons and daughters. He was killed in the lane in front of the Clay Hill house, near the river, during the war, by Captain Blazer’s men, be being with a party of Mosby’s men.
(3) Fanny, married Colonel John B.Young, lawyer, of Richmond, now dead. She and her children (five or six) live in Richmond.
(4.) Betty, married H. Clay Dallam, lawyer, of Baltimore, now dead. She and her children live in Baltimore. She has one daughter, married to an army officer.
(5.) Lucy, married Lewis Hopkins, still living, of Baltimore, a nephew of Johns Hopkins. They have several children.

The relative ages of the above I do not know. General Braxton, I suppose, would be between eighty or ninety, if alive.

My Uncle, St. George Coalter, has a daughter, Virginia, who married Mr. William Braxton, now dead. They have several children. She lives in King William, I think. Her home is named ‘Stanley.’ She has a son, Frank Braxton, who lives in Birmingham, Ala., from whom the addresses of the rest can be had. Her husband, Dr. William Braxton, was near kin to General Corbin Braxton.”
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Major Elliott M. Braxton, ex-M.C. and a member of the Fredericksburg bar, and married to a lady belonging to the Marshall family of Virginia, has furnished also the subjoined data:

“Among the descendants of the Braxton family are:
(1.)	Mrs. Nora Mason, P.O. Old Church, Hanover County.
(2.)	Dr. Tomlin Braxton, Manquin, King William County, Va.
(3.)	Mrs. John B. Young, Richmond, Va.”

Major Braxton adds:
“The two Braxtons referred to, one by the historian Campbell and the other mentioned in my grandfather’s diary, were father and son. The members of my family I think most likely to give you information in regard to our ancestors are Mrs. Nora Mason, P.O. Old Church, Hanover County, Va.; Dr. Tomlin Braxton, Manquin, King William County, Va,; Mrs. John B. Young, Richmond, Va.”
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The following interesting details were furnished by the widow of Rev. John P. McGuire, a daughter of Judge Brockenbrough:

“My great-great-grandparents were George Braxton and Mary, his wife, whose maiden name was Mary Carter. They lived at ‘Newington,” on Mattapony River, King and Queen County, Va., and were buried side by side in the church-yard of Mattapony Church, an old colonial church near ‘Newington,” which is now in the hands of the Baptists. The two tombstones are in good preservation. They were the parents of Carter Braxton, the signer of the Declaration of Independence. The picture of Mrs. Carter Braxton is now owned by Judith Claybrook. She was the first wife of Carter Braxton, the signer, and was Judith Robinson, a near relative of Speaker Robinson, of Revolutionary memory. By this first marriage Carter Braxton has two children. Mary, the elder, married Robert Page, of Broadneck, Hanover County, Va., and the ancestor of Judge John W. Page, of Clarke County, Va.; Carter B. Page, Richmond, Va., and many other sons and daughters now dead. The second child was my grandmother, Judith Robinson, who was born the day of her mother’s death. She married John White, of King William County, Va., the only son of a Scotch clergyman, one of the colonial ministers of the English church. Her immediate descendants were few, only my mother and her children (Brockenbroughs) and my aunt, the first Mrs. Andrew Stevenson, and her only son, the late Governor John White Stevenson, of Kentucky. Carter Braxton’s second wife was a Miss Corbin. Her children were Fitzhugh Braxton, who married Miss Ewing, of Philadelphia. They lived in Henrico County, Va., but he died early, leaving, I think, several children, but his widow returned to Philadelphia when I was too young to know her, and I lost sight of the family. Then another son, George Braxton, who lived at Chericoke in King William County, Va. He died before I was born, but I knew his widow, my good old aunt. She was Mary Carter, of Shirley, child of Mr. Charles Carter. Their children were Charles Carter and Corbin, all of King William excepting Cousin Carter, who married Miss Mary Sayre, of Middlesex County, Va., and moved to her home, ‘Brandon,’ on the Rappahannock River. They moved subsequently to Hanover County, Va., where he died more than twenty years ago, and his wife, a most excellent Christian lady, died this winter (1889). They left six daughters, five of whom are married, but no son. Charles, the eldest son of my Uncle George, died many years ago. He married Miss Betty Grymes, of Orange County. They left one daughter, Mrs. George Carrington, of Richmond, Va., and Dr. William P. Braxton, who married Miss Coalter and is dead, leaving sons and daughters. The youngest son, Dr. Corbin Braxton, inherited Chericoke, and married Miss Mary Tomlin. They have both been dead many years. They had two sons. Armistead, the elder, married Miss Garlick, his cousin, and fell during the war in 1864. The second son, Dr. Tomlin Braxton, married Miss Caperton, and still lives at Chericoke. One daughter, Fanny, married John B. young, a lawyer of this city; Betty married Mr. Clay Dallam, of Baltimore, and Lucy married Mr. Lewis Hopkins, of Baltimore. The daughters of Uncle George Braxton were Mrs. Garlick and Mrs. Conrad Webb. Another son of Carter Braxton, the signer, was Carter Braxton, who married Miss Moore, of Chelsea, in King William County. His children, as I knew them, were Carter M. Braxton, a lawyer and an elegant gentleman, whose first wife was Miss Mieux, I think, of Middlesex. Their only child was Elliott Braxton, who married Miss Marshall, of Prospect Hill, Fauquier County. Carter M.’s second wife was Miss Mayo. She was the mother of several lovely daughters: Mrs. Slaughter, of Fredericksburg, was most beautiful; Mrs. George Taylor (Susan Braxton), Lizzie, Fanny, and perhaps another. The only son of that marriage was Carter M. Braxton, the present chief engineer of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad. Another son of my Uncle Carter was Augustine Braxton, and then there were cousins, Tom and Robert B., but not having been very intimately thrown with any but the descendants of Uncle George, I cannot give an accurate account of them. One son of Carter B. and Miss Corbin I have omitted, -- my uncle Taylor B. He married, I think, a Miss Corbin. Both were burnt in the Richmond theatre in December 1811, leaving a little baby daughter names after both parents, --Anna Taylor. She at first lived with her maiden aunt, my excellent aunt, Nancy B. When she died Cousin Anna came to my father’s house to live, and there she was married in 1830 to the late Mr. Charles Mason, of King George County. She lived but a year, and left a son, Charles, who married a lady of Chillicothe, O., and lives there. The daughter of Carter B., the signer, besides Aunt Nancy, just mentioned, was Mrs. Griffin. There may have been others, but my memory is at fault. Of Uncle George B.’s grandchildren, I may mention the widow of Armistead Braxton, who fell in the war. She was Miss Garlick, a granddaughter, and cousin to her husband. She is now the matron of the Presbyterian and Methodist Home for old ladies in this city. She is a very fine woman. She has two young daughters and a son, who is engaged in the lumber business in Memphis, Tenn. You will see that the poverty of Virginia families has descended upon the Braxtons, as on the rest of us. I may have made a tangle of the various Carter Braxtons, etc., that it would take a Philadelphia lawyer to untwist.”

The authoress of the above graphic and interesting letter is the widow, as already stated, of the late Rev. John P. McGuire, for some years the principal of the High School of the Episcopal Church of Virginia. His father was superintendent of the United States Arsenal at Harper’s Ferry, and his mother was Miss Little, sister of the late Robert Howe Little, M.D., Millwood, Clarke County, and his son-in-law is the Rev. Kinlock Nelson, professor at the Theological Seminary of Virginia
Hello! My name is Gail Smith, and have been told that I'm a descendant of Carter Braxton. My mother's grandmother was Roberta Carter Harris, from Rocky Mount, NC. She may have been born 1865 - 1870 (just guessing.) Her husband may have been named Charles...her children's names were Robert, Charles and Susie.
Does this relate to anything you've found so far?
Thank you for any information you can give me!
Regards,
Gail Smith

My linage base on the site http//braxtonfamily.org goes to Thomas Braxton or possibly James Braxton. Has anyone found further linage back? I assume the name Braxton is English, but so far I have no evidence of that. Anyway, I am to travel to Great Britain this summer and would like to do some search for the old homestead if I knew I was looking in the right place.

Looking at the threads, it appeared to me that you might have such items. Would you be willing to share?

Thanks, Lucia Spears

Re: Braxton's in Natchiotches, LA

Interesting, I just inquired of Earline, Breaunna and Ladonna regarding Lloyd Braxton and Victoria Braxton. This is what I found regarding Lloyd Braxton. Not sure if it is accurate but I am having Ladonna and Breaunna ask Ms. Victoria about these Braxtons:

Are Louis and Victoria Braxton the grandparents Victoria Braxton (daughter of Lloyd and Lillie Mae Franklin Braxton) Their children are/were Eulalie (Lilly), Louis, James (also see him as ... See MoreJimmie and Jimmy), Loyd (also see him as Lawrence and Laraine), Ruben (Ruby), Edna, and Ora Lee. These would be your grandmother's aunts.

I found that a Lloyd Braxton died in 1987 in Natchitoches Parish. I'm thinking that would be your great-grandfather. However, the censuses in 1930 had him listed as Loyd but in 1920 he was Lawrence, 1910, he was Laraine. It shows that he was born around 1909/1910.

I found info on www.familysearch.org that Lillie Mae Franklin's father was Joe Frankin and her mother was Rebecca Savare Franklin.
I am most interested in the descendents you may have found from Carter Braxton. I am trying to find out if Catherine (or Katherine)Spotswood Braxton b.4/17/1857, d.6/2/1917 was a descendent and have found nothing as to her lineage...the fact that her maiden name was Braxton gives me hope! Can you help?

reggiembradford@aol.com
I live in Indianapolis IN but my grandfather Joe Pete Braxton was from philadelphia mississippi. I am having trouble finding his history so far, does his name sound familiar? There are alot of Braxtons out here, but none of us seem to know eachother, his other spouses' children have never been in contact with half siblings. I'm not sure where to begin. jacqueiib@yahoo.com

You did a great job on the research! I thought you were a family member. I spent the entire day doing research mostly on the move of the cemetery in 1960. But one little tidbit I found regarding Carter Braxton may help us. I'm going to crash now, but can you call me on my cell sometime tomorrow when you have the opportunity (301-518-3938).
Hi Alyce!

I am actually the photographer of the Fox 5 piece. I was also the one doing the research. I had posted here hoping to find a descendent of the Braxtons. I have found out much more about the family. Unfortunately it apprears Louisa's 3 children died before she did. Unless she had a child between 1910 and her death in 1916 at age 50, then there are no direct descendents of Carter and Louisa Braxton.

I had wanted to post the information I have in case anyone else is researching the family. Here is most of what I was able to find:

*Mary Louisa Braxton

b. 1865 in Culpeper, VA, according to her gravestone

-father Christopher “Kit” Lindsey/Lindsay/Lindsy b. about 1838 in VA (parents b in VA according to 1880 US Census)

-mother Hannah b. about 1842 in VA (parents b in VA/1880 Census)

Louisa is listed as “M.L.” in the 1880 census, so given name likely an “M” name, but she went by her middle name …

In 1880, they lived in Stevensburg, Culpeper, Va

District Deputy of the U.O. of T. (according to her gravestone) Narcissus Tent 103 (?)

"The United Order of Tents, one of the oldest lodges for African-American women in the country, was founded in Norfolk. It was secretly organized by two slave women, Annetta M. Lane and Harriet R. Taylor; and two abolitionist, Joliffe Union and Joshua R. Giddings as a part of the underground railway, assisting slaves to escape to the north. It was formally organized and publicly recognized after the end of the Civil War. "

Active in her church

“The fair that is going on at the Vermont Avenue Baptist church has been quite a success, under the chairmanship of Mrs. Carter Braxton. She is on of the most enterprising ladies in the church.”

-The Washington Bee, November 25, 1899
d.
All my ancestors back to 1885 were buried at Harmony Cemetery. I don't know if you saw the news report, but Fox 5 reported on Mar 12,2009 that gravestones from the old Harmony Cemetery in DC were found recently in King George County (75 miles from DC). Apparently the gravestones were discarded when the cemetery moved to its current location in Landover, MD. The headstone for Louisa Braxton was one of the ones Fox News pictured and they did some research on her. Reportedly, her headstone reads "District Deputy of the United Order of Tents". There is more info about her on the web. See www.myfoxdc.com "Gravestones Found on Potomac's Edge..." for the pictures of her gravestone and more information about her. I will do all I can to help you get more info and try to get that headstone returned to its rightful place. I am in the same situation with regard to all my ancestors buried at Harmony. Please email me soonest.

Carter & Louisa Braxton, Washington, DC early 1900's

I'm looking for descendents of Carter B Braxton, born Dec 1864 in VA (1900 US Census), he was a carpenter/builder, don't know when or where he died ...

and Louisa Lindsey, born Jan 1866 (or 1865) in Culpepper, VA, died April 18, buried April 21 1916 in Washington, DC.

They married about 1891.

A daughter Ruth was born about 1892, but apparently died before 1910. Another daughter, "Nola" or "Neola" or "Aeola" or ??? was born about 1902 in DC. Son Carter B Braxton was born about 1904 in DC. On the 1910 US Census, Kit Lindsey is listed as father-in-law of Carter.

I find no indication of the family on the 1920 or 1930 Census, anywhere in the country.

I am especially interested to find out more about Louisa Braxton. She was an officer in an organization called the "United Order of Tents". Louisa was originally buried in the "Columbian Harmony Cemetery" in Washington, DC. The cemetery was moved to Landover, MD, in 1960, but there is no listing for Louisa or (as I remember) any Braxton there.

It's possible family moved her somewhere else before the cemetery was moved. I would like to know where she is buried.

Thank you for any help.

A very thorough and interesting book about the complete personal and political life of Carter Braxton, titled
"Carter Braxton, Virginia Signer; A Conservative in Revolt",
Author: Alonzo Thomas Dill - may be viewed/checked out at most libraries or may be purchased from: University Press of America, Inc., Copyright 1983, 4720 Boston Way, Lanham, MD.,20706. My copy of this book was autographed by Mr.Dill.

Descendents of my GG-GFather Oliver O. Braxton, Sr. and his brother Walter Holland were told that we descended from Carter Braxton. My GFather had a picture of Carter Braxton that he showed and told me that we did descend thru him.
The search was started after I retired to find further proof that we did or did not descend thru Carter. Results of this search indicates to me that the information that had been passed-down to us was not true and the picture of Carter was a hoax. William C. Braxton, Jr.
-----------------------------------
