Im looking someone who has more info on the Breazeals who live in Anderson around the 1800's. In particular there was a Matthew( 1813) and Darcus(1815) Breazeal who lived here in Anderson, SC. They had a very big farm and there are still streets named after them. Where they Irish, or German?

Hugh Lawson Breazeale (killed Nov, 1833, St. Louis, MO)

November 30, 1833, Columbian Register: Mormons: Orson Hyde, a Mormonite, writes at St. Louis, Missouri under date of Nov. 8, stating that on the night of 31 October, his brethren, sisters, and children, dwelling peaceably in Jackson County, MO, were attacked by a mob, and some of the dwellings demolished - women and children fled naked into the woods, etc. The next night, Nov 1, the mob assembled again, and broke open the brick store of Gilbert & Whitney, scattered the goods, and tore down the building - fired on the Mormons without effect - the Mormons returned the fire and wounded one man, who exclaimed, "Oh, my God, I am shot!" - they bore him off. A few nights after, a mob of about 200 assembled. The Mormons poured shot into them - killed three, among whom was HUGH L. BREAZEALE, attorney-at-law. A few nights after, the mob attacked them again. The Mormons killed about a dozen, among whom was Mr. Hicks, attorney-at-law, who was a leader of the mob - others were wounded. The Mormons also suffered some in killed and wounded in this battle. Mr. Hyde complains greatly of the neglect of the Governor and the proper authorities to protect an unoffending people.

[The event was headlined in New York as a "Civil War in Missouri" - and this same account can be found in various other newspapers]

Found this, and thought someone might find of interest.

Virginia S.
My grandmother, Annie Lee Breazeale Perry, lived in Bastrop, Louisiana for most of her life. She was born in Mississippi. She married Henry Perry and they moved to Bastrop I believe in the 1920s. I'm trying to learn more about the Breazeale name. I thought it was a French name, but have learned that it is an old Irish name.
Lynne Perry Sales

I am trying to find some information on an E.F. or E.E. Brazeal. I found all our your posts here and thought some of you in this set of posting could might be able to help me. All I know about this person is in 1840 E.F. is listed in Walker, AL. Then I found a E.E. in Itawamba county, MS in an 1853 state census. I can't find him in a Federal Census in 1850 as either name. The only one I find is black and this person was white. I think he may have been the father of my great-great-great grandmother Rebecca Emmaline Brazeal who married Alexander Lander Hall in Itawamba county, MS in 1851.

Hi, sorry it took so long to respond, I have been traveling for work. Ples John Breazeale is my grandfather, he was born June 30, 1911 in Roane County Tennessee, and he died in Pinellis County (St. Petersburg) Florida, on July 16, 1976, he had divorced my grandmother some years earlier and moved there where two of his sons lived with their families. He was married to my grandmother, Bonnie Lou Shillings Breazeale, who died here in Tennessee in 1979. I have hit a few brick walls on his research, but his parents were William M. Breazeale, born in 1882, I am having a huge problem finding his information, and my grandfathers mother was named Doria Nelson Breazeale. William M. Breazeale's parents were Robert E. Breazeale and Dora A. Jenkins. Please feel free to email me direct with any further questions, and I hope I was of help. My direct email address is drc12154@msn.com.

My understanding is that Lois Plotts turned her research over to Janice Still (stilljanice@aol.com). Although I haven't spoken to her in several years, Janice has been working on an updated and revised edition of "Breazeale Kin." I don't know if/when it is published. Janice also organizes a Breazeale reunion every year in August, near Anderson, SC. During the reunion weekend, Breazeales from all over get together for fellowship, story-swapping, and maintaining the headstones in the Breazeale family plot. Contact her for more info.

Re: William Brazeal (c1787-1843)

Hi,

I found your post most interesting, as I have researched this family for many years. I descend from Nancy Brazeal, daughter of Joel Brazeal (c1750-18 May 1829) and his wife, Rebecca Griffin (c1760 - after 14 Nov 1844). I have found research on this family somewhat confusing for several reasons. I will need to review the 1840s will of William Brazeal in Tuscaloosa County Alabama to refresh my memory.

I am confused by several statements in your query. Although several researchers state that there was a "Joel Marshall Brazeal, Sr." and "Joel Marshall Brazeal, Jr.", my research indicates that this is incorrect. I have found no record that the man by the name of JOEL BRAZEAL, born about 1750, son of Henry Brazeal, lived in Virginia, Chatham Co NC, Pendleton Dist SC, and Tuscaloosa Co AL, ever had a middle name. I've not seen this in any deed or marriage or other court record, church record, etc. made during his lifetime or immediately after his death. It has always seemed to me that some made the assumption that the elder Joel had the same middle name as his son. Have you found any record that Joel (c1750-1829) had a middle name?

Am I misunderstanding your query, in that you refer to the Joel who lived about 1750 until 1829 as a "Junior"? My information shows that he was the first in his family by the name of "Joel", as his father was Henry Brazeal, Jr. Perhaps I misread your query.

I also found myself confused by your discussion of Joel Brazeal's son, William. I was not aware that there were two William Brazeals in Tuscaloosa County - I thought that the only one was Joel's son who died in 1843. Would you mind helping me understand how you know for certain that Joel's son is the one who was in Claiborne Parish Louisiana in 1850? This is interesting to me, for I have often wondered who that man was. If you are correct in that the William Brazeal who died in 1843 was not the son of Joel as most researchers have long believed, do you happen to know who that man's father was?

My Breazeal family moved from Tuscaloosa County Alabama to Arkansas, and then to Spearsville, Union Parish Louisiana. Several other Brazeal families lived near Spearsville, including John Harden Brazeal, Sr. (1838 - after 1883). I cannot determine who his father was, but he may have been the 15-year old male living in the household of William Brazeal in Claiborne Parish in 1850.

Thanks,

Tim
timothydhudson "at" hotmail "dot" com

William Brazeal (c1787-1843)

The book by Plots "Brazeal Kin" states that William was the son of Joel Marshal Brazeal, Jr (c1751-1829). Will led the Brazeal family to Tuscaloosa Co, Al circa before 1820. His father, Joel Sr was age 70 and followed circa 1821, with several members of the clan. One was his son, William, and another was also named William, who died in Tuscaloosa County in 1843. (His will is on file) Plots states that the William who died in 1843 was son of JMB, Jr, which is incorrect. Wiliam, the correct son of JMB.Jr, took his family to MS and on to Claiborne Parish, LA, where he is found in the 1850 census. He is not in the 1860 census, thus died 1850-1860. Does any one have any data on his life or possible connection to Elijah Brazeal, who died in Claiborn Parish in 1854-55. lobo50@verizon.net

It is certainly a work in progress. I have been working on our genealogy for about 18 years. I am in the processing of writing up my notes for the Breazeale family. I come down through the Graysons to Tennessee Jane Grayson - and William Walker King. Hoss was in the DeKalb County Rifles, 49th Alabama Infantry, Company B.
