My great great grandparents were Franz Brede b. 1864 Pommern, Germany d. May 7, 1954 in Ida Township, and Emilie Groskrutz b 1862 Germany d. Jan 15, 1936 in Ida Township. My great grandmother was their daughter, Hedwig 'Hattie' Brede who married Robert Otto Leu. Anyone who has information or photographs that they would be willing to share, please contact me. I am the great great grandaughter of August Brede. My name is Nancy Brede Scholla Nelson and live in Minnesota. August, son of Michael Brede, was born Sept 23, 1823, and died May 20, 1905 in Bruhlsdorf, Poland. August was married to Henrietta Kruger (born August 7,1828 and died June 19,1907). They had sons Friedrich,Wilhelm,Ferdinand,Euard,Heinrich,Karl,Hermann,Reinhard, and 1 daughter who died at 17 years of age. Wilhelm, Ferdinand, and Heinrich immigrated to America maybe 1880-1889. They lived in Brownton or Stewart, Minnesota. My great grandfather was Heinrich(Henry) and lived by Hector, Minnesota. Henry married Adline (Pankonin) in 1890, and they had 9 children. Hello, I have a Fredrick Brede in my family who was born October 4,1853 in Rheinland, Cologne City, Eckenhagen City, Germany and died November 16, 1925 in Rochester NY. He Married Mary Zornow October 31, 1888 in Rochester, NY. She was daughter of John Zornow and Mary Louise. She was born December 8, 1858 in Pittsford NY died November 11, 1946 in Rochester, NY. I have the Brede line to 1738 but it may not be the same.

Hi I am Dodie Brede (Breed). I currently live in Texas outside of Dallas/Ft. Worth. I am not sure if we are connected or related. I am new to this so I am still learning. I believe however that my family came over on a potato boat from England, or so the story has been told. They say that they got off the boat in NY. So I'm sort of wondering if we are connected. Alan Walker Brede: His mother, Edith Mary Walker (born in England) married Alexander Brede (born in Russia) in the UK, then they moved to Santiago, Chile. Edith and Alexander had five children: Olga, Alan, Nelly, Joanie, and Alix. After Alexander Brede passed away, Edith married Thomas Mathewson Knight.

Alan Walker Brede (my father) moved to California, U.S., from Santiago, Chile. Does anyone knows anything about Olga, Nelly, Joanie or Alix?

The Brede's that lived in the St. Clair/Clinton Counties of Illinois pronounces their names as "Brady".

my Cacabrede was documented in 1109.The beginning of Middle English. Bread was not used in Old english to mean a foodstuff they used Hlaf (loaf). They began using the word Bread around the 1400's. So i don't think it is a food related meaning.

This does fit in with a possible geographical source meaning though.
I have found that Brede is of north german origin meaning a low lying area of land. The first Cakabrede's were from Cambridgeshire which in those days were low lying areas that were often flooded leaving behind small "isles". They were most likely of Danish/German(Saxon)ancestry so this fits in with a north German origin of the word.

Cake means round so perhaps it was one of these Isle's that he lived on...a Round low lying piece of land surrounded by shallow water.

It seems to be pronounce as "Breed" from what i can find out. But it certainly looks like all the different ways of saying brede could come from the same root!

I have been working on the Brede family that settled in the Mascoutah - Summerfield, IL area. The name in this area is pronounced Brady. I aquired a small book with the Brede family that had the definition of the Brede name.

The Surname Brede appears to be locational in origin, and is believed to be associated with German and English.

Brede: Meaning Dweller or Near a Plain.

I do know he did not marry his mother he was married to someone else and got Albert's mother preg. when he had a affair with her. Albert's mother died in a fire so I have been told. I've traced my Brede heritage back to my great-great grandfather Fred W. Brede (born 1860-ish) in Germany who was married to Ernestine. I can't find any information on Ernestine's maiden name or who Fred's parents were.

Also, any information on Roland (Fred and Ernestine's son - my great-grandfather) and Meta Brede would be greatly appreciated, as well.

Milda Schwartz Freyholtz Besett of Canon City, CO died March 11, 2005 at the Progressive Care Center in Canon City, where she had lived for more than four years. She was born March 17, 1914 in Sibley County, Minn. to Frank and Martha (Brede) Schwartz. She married Fritz Emil Freyholtz on Nov 9, 1938 in Minnesota. They later moved to Iowa where she pursued her career as a Swedish masseuse in Fenton. She married James Knox Besett on June 27, 1976.

She is survived by her daughter Marlene Meyer; son Jerry Freyholtz; 4 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; and 3 great great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her first husband Fritz Freyholtz; and her second husband James Besett.

My husband's mother's maiden name was Brede, but they pronounce it like "Breedy," and they came from Germany, but in my research I've found that in England they pronounce the name like "Bread", and that comes from the old English spelling of Bread which was Brede.

Was/is your father Gaylen. I think I have the right spelling.
I knew Gaylen not very well. He was several years older than I. But, I remember seeing him when I visited Uncle Sonny and Aunty Grace in Punchbowl. They were really nice people. I sure do miss them.
Do you have a sister named Prudence Brede?
You also have an uncle named David Brede who lives in Kaulapapa. The last time I saw him was many many years ago at his wife's funeral. She was also a very kind person.

I believe he was actually from Hamburg, Germany. If you go to www.hawaiiankingdom.org and look under the link, "Info for Nationals," it will take you to another page that will allow you to choose the option to choose, "Registry of Naturalized Subjects..." He became a Naturalized Hawaiian National on July 31, 1869.
