Hi, We have differing information about Riland Capps' parents. I have copies of the family bible records and a deed that states that his parents were J. and Sarah Capts/Capps. Still don't have the father's full name, though some family trees on Ancestry suggest it was john. Still looking for proof. I can send you the copies of the bible records and NC deed of gift from Sarah Capts to "my beloved son Ryland Capts" if you send me your email.

Heather Choplin

Captain James Brennan born Sligo Town died Watsonville, CA

I grew up on Brennan St and I am trying to locate more information about the person the street was named after. James Brennan was born in Sligo Town, Co. Sligo in 1823. He came to the U.S.in the late 1840s. He was partner with Captain Sudden in a steamship company that transported produce from the Pajaro Valley to San Francisco. In the 1870 Census he and two sisters, Margaret and Ann are listed. Margaret & James are buried in Watsonville and I assume his sister Ann married but I don't know. He came to the U.S. from Quebec. Hopefully this family sounds familiar.
Thank you,
Margaret Kristich

I use the mnhs.org death certificate index which doesn't let you do any of that; so I assume you were in a more sophisticated site. I do not have any information about William; the prominent Brennans were Walter and Bertha Todd Brennan. She was a school teacher in Waskish in the early days and has a write-up by a Joanne Robe which I assume is the daughter. The North Country History books were from the 60's thru the 80's so she may deceased by now. There is more about Walter's wife and her homestead experiences than details on Walter re brothers and sisters. I know the Historical Society has copies but if you need the account and can't find it, I will be happy to copy mine. The descendants are not interested in continuing the books so I am not sure who gives permissions. I would think as long as we don't sell copies, no one would care. Cordially, Grace

Hi Grace.

No I didn't use soundex. I searched first name only "Wil*" for beltrami county.
Then I skipped down to the surnames that began with "B".
This method is not always doable of course. I wouldn't try it for Manhattan NY!

BTW, was this William married to Celia with a son Ralph? I tried to track that family after his death. I didn't find them, but didn't have a lot of time to put into it. I don't have the records in front of me right now, but I thought William might be related to another Beltrami Co Brennan, was it George?
I've forgotten now.

I hope the death cert gives you the burial information for William.

All the best.
Great intuition there! I will look at that death certificate when I am in St Paul in July. I only have a couple mysteries left from the old ledger of deaths for that twp.! Do you usually test misspellings this severe or did that come up with soundex? I keep forgetting to try soundex...Thanks so much, Grace (Old death records detective, outdetected on that one!)

I can't find Michael and Katherine in the census in Iowa between 1880 and 1910. Next time you post, provide more information. You said Michael was in Ft. Madison in 1874. How do you know that? Was he a child then, an old man? Was he born in Ireland? What were the names of his children and when were they born? If he was your greatgreatgrandfather, you presumably know at least the child who is your direct ancestor.

Diane

Hi mykiey,

Hope that you're still on Ancestry, as it's been ten years since this post...

I have copies of two documents signed by Patrick E. Brennan's son, John D. Brennan - one is Patrick E.'s estate inventory, and the other is my gg-grandfather Lawrence Tobin's naturalization petition. I also have a copy of the letter from Patrick E. Brennan's oldest son Edward naming his brother John executor of their father's estate. If you're interested in copies of these docs, I'd be happy to email you the digital files. I'm interested in any information that you might have about John D. Brennan; although I'm probably not related, I wonder if he was a close friend of my gg-grandfather.

In searching births/baptisms available on familysearch.org and Ancesty,
I had narrowed it to a James Brennan born to a John and Bridget Brennan
in Tubbercurry, Sligo in March 1865. Then I discovered your public tree and see that you also have that as a possibility. Did you obtain this birth cert?
Also I noticed on your tree the Co Kildare birth place for James. What is that
about?

The 1901 and 1911 censes for Powellsborough, Tobercurry have a John and Bridget of about the right age. Have you tracked that family any further.
Here's a look-up site for Sligo:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~irlsli/lookup.html
Maybe someone there can help.

Finally, Ancestry has a naturalization for a James Brennan in Police Court, Lowell, Mass, of about the right age, etc. Did you check that one out?

Nan

Ancestry also has the marriage
of a William H Brennen and Mary E Simmons
on Mar 22 1865 in Clark County Illinois.
This might be the marriage record of Rosa's parents.

Clark County Illinois is adjacent to Vigo County Indiana.

You don't say what sources you've already checked, which would have been helpful. I found her in the 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 censuses in Indiana. I didn't find her before her 1888 marriage. Children born in Indiana, so you should check their marriage indexes, especially in Vigo County.

Diane

Robert,

Had you already identified your grandfather?
There is a tree on Rootsweb and I think it is your father, identifies
his father as Stephen James Brennan who
was born about 1874 according to Stephen's WWI draft registration.
It shows three wives for James Earl, but one name unknown.

Here is the link:
http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/...

The researcher is Terry D.
Ronald, I read the other posts. My mom was born in Elizabeth NJ as was her entire Brennan family. Sad they are not yours. However, there were two other Brennan families in Elizabeth according to my mom, Joan Brennan Kelly. Two of the families attended Saint Mary of the Assumption Church, Washington Street, Elizabeth, NJ. Some of the Brennans were police officers and some firemen. My mom's Brennan's worked for Standard Oil. Hope some of this helps you. Good Luck. Elizabeth
