Crockett-Cowan-Briant

am interested in the inter-related families of Crockett, Cowan and Bryant of early Jackson County, GA, and later of Coffee County and Rutherford County, TN.

Jackson County, GA marriages:
1806--John Crockett, Jr. to Mary Cowan,
12 May 1807--Elizabeth Crockett to John Briant (Bryant),
03 Dec 1807--Stewart Cowan to Mary Stuart,
1809--Stephen Bryant to Mary A. Green.

Mary Cowan Crockett and Stewart Cowan were siblings, children of William Cowan and Sarah Stewart Cowan. Ca. 1815, these 2 families moved to what was to become Coffee County, TN (then Franklin Co.) The 2 families lived adjoining, near what later became the Stephenson Community. When Grundy County, TN was formed from Coffee County, the Cowans ended up on the Grundy County side and the Crocketts on the Coffee County side. The old Crockett Cemetery is within a Cowan land grant.

My hunch is that John Crockett, Jr. was a brother to the Elizabth Crockett who married John Bryant who was a brother to the Stephen Bryant--all of Jackson County, GA.

Now here is where it gets interesting: In 1832, William M. Cowan (son of Stewart Cowan and Mary Stuart) married Mary M. Briant in Rutherford Co., TN (just north of the Coffee/Grundy area.) There was a John Briant/Bryant in the county at that time. I am wondering if his marriage to Mary Briant was not just that to a random family, but within the connection of associated families that went back to GA days (they would not have been cousins, but would have had cousins in common.) To top it off, the oldest child of William M. Cowan and Mary Briant Cowan was named John Stephen Cowan--a common enough name, to be sure, but if my scenario is right, it would be after Mary's father and uncle.

I have much information to share on the Crockett-Cowan connection, and am interested in exploring possible Briant/Bryant connections.

All except Milley (zero taxable males) was listed as having one male adult over 21 charged to them. John's entry is a bit confusing, because it appears that it was originally 1, than on follow up notes was changed to either 0 or 4.

Anyway......I'm interested in your Zachariah or any of these family members you can identify. Thanks.

John has to 21 here, so he could not be Zachariah's son. I've got the tax record, if you want it.

Carlton D Brien is the son of John Smith Brien of TN and his first wife Sarah Ann Ashworth. This is the first time I've run into a child of Carlton's who lived. So far I've found 2 who died.

I have a GGG granpa PETER BRIANT born in SC in 1840's migrated to NORTH GA-Woodstock after CIVIL WAR. He is labled as black and most likely was a Slave in SC. Later on his name became BRYANT. My family has huge native american (word of mouth) connection. So this could be due to being half-white/black or truly native american. SO, any SOUTH CAROLINA BRIANTS, please let me know where any slave or farm owners might have lived.

I am Janet Myers Galvan (carolann is my sister in law). Carlene Aldrich Brien was my grandmother. Her parents were Carlton Davidson Brien b. 1829 d. 4-14-1867 and Luzette Aldrich b 6-24-1840 d 6-14-1867. I believe she was raised by Luzette's brother, Thomas Aldrich.

I'm very excited to hear that! Sadly, neither my mother, grandaughter of Alf and Clara, nor her brother have any information about them, so my mother will be very happy to hear of your reply. My mother knew there were cousins with the name Robinson, but she wasn't sure where they fit into the picture.

I am the grandaughter of Tasman Smith Robinson (aka Holt) who is the younger brother of Clara. Clara was one of 13 children and I have all their details and details of her parents Ellen (Smith) and William Robinson (aka Holt). My father will be 90 yrs old next week and remembers Clara and Alf Briant. Let me know what further information you require.

The property is behind the church. Go up the lane and that is the property. The Bryant's gave the land for the church to be built. I am still trying to find jefferson's father. I found possible jefferson's old property was past mt. eden cemetary cemetary where the fennel's own a farm on the right
about 1-2 miles up mt. eden road. I would like to set up a time and place to meet now that i am retired from the military. I now live in Pekin, IN so I am pretty close now.

Just another note with my post - I'm since spoken to my mother again since posting and she says maybe Cornwall? Alfred Briant senior was a fisherman and caught mutton birds for a living on Flinders Island, so that might fit.

Hi all,

I'm currently researching into my mother's family, in particular her father's side. Her father was Alfred Archibald Briant, born 1913 on Flinders Island, Tasmania. His parents were Alfred Ernest Briant and Clara Adeline Holt and they lived at Lady Barron. They had 4 children, Una, Elvie, Ruth and Alfred. Alfred senior came to Australia from somewhere in the UK - my mother doesn't know exactly where, but thinks possibly around London? We believe Clara was born on Flinders Island and may have been part Tasmanian Aboriginal. We think her mother had the same name. Other than electoral records I can't seem to find anything else. If you have any information to share I would love to hear from you.

The website I cited has apparently been taken down. A Google cache of the home page indicated that it was still active on September 23, 2009.

The Cherokee nation erected a monument to Lucy (Chunannee) Briant, her son John and his children at the Poplar Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Gibson County, Tennessee. One or more of the grandchildren are buried there. Poplar Springs Church is near Bradford, not far from Skull Bone, a few miles north of Milan.

There are a number of Briants from Berkshire. The ones I am related to are from Pangbourne and lived in Reading. My father had Briant as his middle name and this name seems to have been often used in family so there must have been a reason for this - perhaps high flyers??

My great-great=grandmother was Eliza Briant, b 1827 St Mary's Reading. She was daughter of William Briant b.c1781 at Pangbourne Berkshire (Yeoman, farmer) and Bethia (nee ?) b 23/6/1799 Petherton North, Somersetshire. Her siblings were Mary & Elizabeth (twins born c1821), William bc1826, and Sarah b. c1829, all at St Marys Reading, Berkshire.

In 1848 at Reading Eliza Briant married William Henry Cooper (b 1827 Reading).

There are a number of other Briants in the Reading area including a Henry Briant who was a successful architect and designed the Royal Berkshire Hospital. see picture at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Berkshire_Hospital. (His brother also architect who may have assisted in designing Reading cemetery)

I'd be interested to know if you have any information about the Briant family in Berkshire.

BRIANT's - the Spring Valley House - 7 miles from San Andreas, on the Stockton stage road, they have struck at the depth of 80 feet, an old river bed rich in gold, and presenting the appearance of that which for several years yielded so largely to the miners in San Andreas. Emigrated to Australia ?
I believe James Briant and his wife Sophia Walliker (born 1846), Thomas Briant (born 1852), and George Briant (born 1855) may have emigrated to Austraia. I lose track of them in 1869, 1861, and 1871, respectively. The Briants were all born in the Shoreditch / Cripplegate area to the North of Liverpool Street Station east London. Their father was Thomas Briant, born in Whitchurch Oxfordshire who around 1851 was a coachman just at the time the railways were taking over. He later got positions as a gardener in the big country houses in Essex.
I believe they went to Australia because my great grandfather Leonard Fraank Briant made a passage to Australia in 1912 trying to find them.

Any assistance with these Briants would be greatly appreciated.

Lucy Bryant/Briant is my ancestor through her son John, his son Zechariah, his son David, his son Zechariah R (ZR, his daughter Edith (my great-grandmother) Bryant Barger, their daughter Lucille Barger Butler, and her son Fred Butler, my father.

Monuments to Lucy and her grandchildren have been erected at the Poplar Springs Baptist Church Cemetery near Bradford in Gibson County.

David Briant is buried in the Bryant cemetery inside the Milan Arsenal, as is his father Zacharia and one of his wives Elizabeth (we don't know which Elizabeth)

She died in 1848 in Gibson County but here burial place is unknown. Her husband, Chunawee Bryant, was killed in the battle of Horseshoe Bend.
