Hi

I am trying to find some information on my great great grandfather John Bridgewater. He married Eleanor Roberts in 1823 in Oswestry and one of the witnesses was Thomas Edwards. I have found a marriage record for Thomas Edwards & Mary Bridgewater in Shropshire in 1791. Mary seems to have been born in 1767 - parents John & Hannah.

I was wondering if this is a coincidence or is Mary related to John Bridgewater? Perhaps an aunt - I don't know his date of birth but am guessing it would be about 1800 and the only other information I have is that he was a surgeon.

Can anyone help? I am descended from John's son also called John born in 1825 in Llandrinio Wales.

Many thanks

Diane Bridgewater

Maud's father was Edward “Ed” Bridgewater who was born in August 1859 in Indiana. He was married on 11 February 1883 in Scott Co., Indiana, to Missouri A. “Zourie” Robbins who was born in October 1862 in Indiana. [Marriage Book 5, p. 277] Edward was a laborer and in his later years he was a caretaker employed by Scottsburg Cemetery, Their children were Mary Ellen "Ella" (Bridgewater) Clark, Maud (Bridgewater) Motsinger, Mamie Grace (Bridgewater) Montgomery, Louwilla "Willie" Bridgewater, James Howard Bridgewater; and Trilby "Letha" Bridgewater. I have additional information available. [Vern Paul's Bridgewater Register, Reg. I don't think I remember actually meeting you, but I remember hearing your name. I believe you had a brother, but i don't recall his name. Many apologies! I was very young (probably about 5) at the time. Creel's middle daughter, Mary, was my mother. He used to call me "Little Mary" or "Utsey".

Thanks for sharing. We must be related somewhere. My mom was married four times and was not the easiest to get along with. Her third husband we called Pappy and he appears to be the equivalent of your Pops. His second wife, and the love of his life, died of breast cancer only a few years after they married. He never married again. Rather, he focused on his "former" step-children, always there for us, and anyone else who passed his way.

Yes Vern. My mother was Helen Elsa Hoffman, b. 11/07/1914 in Newark, NJ, d. 10/28/1965 in Corpus Christi, TX. They were married in August 1962 at Corpus Christi (honeymooned in Monterrey, Mexico) and divorced spring 1965. We originally lived at his house on Princess Drive in Annaville (rural Corpus Christi) and then moved to Logan Drive (also Corpus Christi) in the summer of 1963. Helen had six children: four by her first husband (Hosea Ivy), one by her second husband (Luther Bryant) and one by her third and fifth husband (Leroy Blount). So Pops was her fourth hubby. She remarried my dad after she and Pops divorced. As stated elsewhere in these threads, she also died of cancer and I think it just tore Pops up to lose two wives to the same condition in such a short time period.

If so, can you give me a little background, maiden name, and relative dates and places; when and where was she married to Creel?

Creel and I are 5th cousins and share Jonathan "Bridgwater" of Henrico and Amherst Counties, Virginia, as our 4th great-grandfather.

Vern Paul

My two cents for what it is worth...
Pops (that is what we called him) married our mom as his second wife. She had been friends with Ola. My mother was not a particularly nice person and poor Pops put up with all sort of abuses from her. He was one of the finest human beings I have ever known. Always polite to a fault, Pops made every effort - every day to make my brother John and I feel at home with him. He always cooked breakfast for everyone - every day. He taught migrant farmworker children in Robstown. There are not many people about whom one can say "That was a saint", but Pops came pretty close. When our mom got sick, my brother John moved up to Alaska to live with Pops - that in preference to his own mother; and that says a lot. He was a quiet and soft-spoken man. Completely self-effacing. Gentle, kind, and thoughtful. Pops Bridgewater was a great man and I am honored to carry his memory as an example of what a man should be.

Vern Paul’s Bridgewater Register: Reg. 1071 CREEL TOLBERT BRIDGEWATER

Creel Tolbert Bridgewater was born on 17 February 1907 in Scurry Co., Texas, son of William Cager Bridgewater and Nellie Mae Creel. Creel attended Southwest Texas State Teachers College and played on the Texas State Men’s Basketball team 1934-35 and 1935-36. Creel was married on 8 November 1925 to Ola Mae Houston who was born on 3 February 1907 in Ben Arnold, Milam Co., Texas, daughter of William Hubert Houston and Ida Mae McKinney. Creel and Ola were both teachers and lived in the area of Temple and Cameron for 35 years. He was District Superintendent of Sharyland Public Schools in 1954. In 1957, Creel and Ola moved to Corpus Christi in Nueces Co., Texas, where Creel and Ola taught school in nearby Robstown. Ola Mae died in Corpus Christi Memorial Hospital on 25 September 1961 following a 15-month struggle with cancer. She was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Cameron, Milam Co., Texas. Creel and Ola had three daughters: Ida Nell Bridgewater, married Jack Hess McMichael; Mary Willeene Bridgewater, married John Lee Solis; and Donna Kay Bridgewater.

Creel married a second time to a woman named Helen (last name?). She died a couple of years later, also of cancer. There were no children. Creel’s third wife was Edith E. Reed, born 14 May 1917, whom he met when he was teaching in Alaska. He taught at North Pole School in the North Star Borough School District of Fairbanks, Alaska. [Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, Wednesday, September 15, 1965, p. 3] Creel and Edith traveled around a bit and ultimately settled in Colorado where Edith had family. Creel died in June 1983 in Olathe, Montrose Co., Colorado, and was buried alongside Ola Mae in Oak Hill Cemetery in Cameron, Milam Co., Texas.

I would appreciate learning whatever happened to Edith after Creel died.

Thank you,

Vern Paul

I am trying to find information on my great grandfather, George Bridgewater who was born about 1890 in Louisiana and died 1974. I believe that his mother was named Marie or Mary. He has multiple children and siblings. Some of his siblings include Dorsey, Ejane, and Jimmie. He lived in Pointe Coupee and New Iberia Louisiana.

I am having a hard time finding his father. George was African American but spoke French so I am really curious and would be overjoyed to have any leads on this. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. Nicki

VEAZEY 1880-1961

John Cass Bridgewaters [John Wesley, John, Levi] was born on 21 April 1881 in Indiana, son of John Wesley Bridgewaters and Louisa Josephine Lowdermilk, and great-grandson of Revolutionary War veteran Levi Bridgewater(s). John Cass's father, a native of Washington Co., Indiana, moved to Clay Co., Indiana, in 1864. By 1880, John Wesley and Louisa had settled in Sugar Ridge Township in Clay County where it is presumed most, if not all, of their children, including John Cass, were born. In 1900, John Wesley and Louisa were enumerated in Sugar Ridge Township with all of their eight children still at home, including John Cass.

John Cass Bridgewaters was married about 1905 in Sullivan Co., Indiana, to Susan E. “Susie” Veazey, who was born on 22 October 1880, daughter of John Veazey and Harriett Dorris. John and Susie lived in Jackson Township in Sullivan County in 1910. They were apparently life-long residents of Hymera and were enumerated there in 1920 and 1930.

Susan died on 17 February 1961 at home in Hymera and was buried in Ashboro Cemetery. John died in August 1970 at Detroit, Michigan. He was buried in the K of P Cemetery at Hymera.

John Cass Bridgewaters and Susan E. Veazey had the following known children:

1. Mona L. Bridgewaters [23 Dec 1905 or 2 Jan 1906 -] m. Fred A. Clark
2. Ruth C. Bridgewaters [c1907-] m. Clark
3.

Paul Kevin Commean submitted research indicating some of his relatives believe/believed the Bridgewater ancestors were full blooded Cherokee Indians and fought in the Civil War . . . originally from Alabama/Mississippi and that two of the Bridgewater Indians who fought in the Civil War are believed buried in Mississippi or Louisiana. Marion Clay Commean is said to have seen the graves. The tradition is embellished by placing two of the Bridgewater Indians on the Trail of Tears and that they dropped out to settle in Illinois and/or fight in the Civil War. Other than this tradition, most of Commean's research seems to be well documented and supported by factual references. Note that the Trail of Tears was in 1838 and the Civil War was in 1861-65.

My research indicates Andrew served as a Private in Captain Price's Company, Illinois Volunteers, during the Black Hawk War which was fought in 1832 and places Andrew in Illinois well before the Trail of Tears. Service with the Illinois Volunteers in this conflict somehat precludes his being an Indian or of Indian descent. Andrew appears in Illinois in the 1830 (Adams County) and 1840 (Randolph County) Census. He purchased 80 acres in Perry County in 1843 and died a year later in the same location. Widowed Rebecca bought another 40 acres in Perry County in 1854. Their son, Andrew, Jr., did fight in the Civil War but was born and died in Illinois.

Vern Paul
The Bridgewater Register

Andrew J. Bridgewater was born about 1800/10 and died on 16 April 1844 in Perry Co., Illinois, probably son of Isaac Bridgewater and grandson of Samuel Bridgewater and Mary Ann Coughman of Scott Co., Indiana. [I am not entirely convinced with the link to Isaac, a conclusion that needs further proof.] Andrew was married to Rebecca (Crain) Thomas. He was living in Randolph Co., Illinois, in 1840. After Andrew died, Rebecca married Abner Evans. Among Andrew and Rebecca's children was your Margaret Evans Bridgewater [30 Jun 1837-25 Jan 1913] who was married first on 1 Feb 1855 to John H. Yancy/Yancey, son of William Yancey and Rachel Duncan Yancy. Margaret was married second on 28 July 1867 to John Jeremiah. I have PDF files available with additional information and sources.
Vern Paul's Bridgewater Register
Online at bridgewaterregister.com

IN, She passed away near Little York, Indiana.
I have a lot on the Indiana Bridgewater's but since I only needed Margaret Ann Bridgewater because she married in to my line I have nothing to add on all the others.
Samuel Marion Bridgewater and family never went MO that I know of. I'm sorry I can't be of more help to you but if you have a question, please get in touch.
Penny

If any of you want to dicuss the Bridgewater History I would like to join in. Margaret Ann (Maggie) had a brother, Joseph who was stated as dying in 1901. Joseph Bridgewater, was the father of five children: Levi, Maude,Stella, Bruce, Elsie they moved to IL and lived close to Terre Haute, IN, Levi died there.
Penny

Update on my Bridgewater's 2010

Ten years has brought about several changes in my research of Samuel Marion Bridgewater. His parent's were Samuel and Louisiana Still of Little York, Washington Co IN.
Their son, Samuel Marion, marr. Elizabeth Blevins, they had several children and among them was a daughter, Margaret Ann, she married young, to David Alonzo Hobson, they had four births, three died, one daughter, Ivy Hobson, born 5 Oct 1883 grew to adulthood and marr. Maynard Mitchell, Wash. Co. IN, they removed to Fairdale, a suburb of Louisville, KY onto the land that Maynard received from the Gov. for service in Civil War.
I personally met with several of Ivy's family and found that her mother, Margaret Ann Bridgewater Hobson died when Ivy was eight years old. I later found Margaret (Maggie) death listed as Mrs. Alonzo Hobson (Alonzo misspelled)on 26 Nov. 1891 near Little York, IN, Source: Scott Co IN Chronicle. Possibly could be also found in the Salem newspaper.
To my knowledge Samuel Marion Bridgewater never left Little York, IN except to visit his children. Samuel M. had a cousin named Andrew Marion Bridgewater and definitely not the same person. I know nothing of Andrew Bridgewater except his middle name may be Marion.
Penny SnOOOpy839@aol.com

Hi Carol! My name is Leslie Dorr and I am a descendant of John Demaris Bridgewater. I have old pictures of John Demaris Bridgewater. Everything I have lists his father as Tom Bridgewater. (It was from a record in my Great Grandmother's Bible.) I may not have a lot in the way fo information, BUT I do have some really old photos of John Demaris nad his wife. His son Odie Hurlbert Bridgewater and his wife Mary Beatrice Kay Rhoden were my Great Grandparents and when they passed away, my Grandmother, Martha (Virgie) Bridgewater whitlock, inherited all of the old family photos, including one of John Demaris Bridgewater when he played for a local baseball team. Grandma passed away last year and now My mother, Martha Whitlock Hartman, has entrusted me with these pictures to put them on a disk (or two) to help preserve them. I have well over 100 with no name on them. I have been looking for someone who could tell me more about the baseball team photo. If you would like to share information or photos, please contact me at lesleydorr@hotmail.com.
Thank you!
Leslie (Hartman)Dorr

Hi, I have just come across your message, as we are some 10 years on, this info may already be known to you.
The surname Bridgewater is believed to be a corruption of "Walter's Bridge", Walter de Dowai of Norman decent owned most of the lands around this area, believed given to him after the Battle of Hastings.
Further info can be found at www.surnamesdb, further info on the name and the area can be found by a google search of Walter de Dowai.
Just as a matter of interest, I live in the village of Worle, Somerset, UK. Mentioned as one of the villages he owned.
Hope this is of interest, best wishes, Mike.

I have searched everywhere high and low, but cant find it. I am looking for Alta Lokey's real father, I know she has a brother named Orbin and her mother was Callie Brannum Chappell. But I am having no luck she was born in Arkansas in 1913 and lived in Illinois and Missouri. Any help on her father would be appreciated.

Re: Help on Bridgewaters

Maybe we are related if we go back far enough. My Bridgewaters are Bridgwaters descended from Samuel and Frances of Henrico Co., Virginia, and before that Sulhampstead Abbots, Berkshire, England 1500's through 1650's or so.

You Levi Bridgewater is just one of many brick walls that I am sure will fall someday. Still working on it. He is probably a direct descendant of Levi Bridgewater, a Revolutionary War soldier from Virginia who settled in Indiana . . . or, a descendant of Samuel Bridgewater, also a Revolutionary War soldier from Virginia who settled in Indiana. These two are related, possibly brothers, or Uncle (Sam) and nephew (Levi).

Vern Paul
