(message I had replied to in the wrong place...)
Hello Sue - not sure if you are still interested...or if I have written to you in the past. I am the great great grand-daughter of Thomas Wilkinson Brighouse - son of George and Emma (Wilkinson) Brighouse. My Thomas went to Samoa where he had many children (some by different mothers). My grandmother Mona Annie Brighouse was the daughter of TWB and Marie Wulf (widow of William R. Pettibone). I have only recently learned that Marie was my gramma's mother as my gramma was sent to England to live with her gramma Emma Wilkinson Brighouse when she was 4 - then when her gramma Emma died in 1913...I believe she was sent to live with another aunt (possible Fanny Williams (Brighouse) as gramma had a pic of her home in Sutton)..then Fanny died in 1917 and she was sent to live with he aunt Emma Taylor (Brighouse) in Toronto, Canada when she was 16. Gramma died not knowing her gramma's name. If you have a membership with Ancestry-you can view my tree "McIntee/Brighouse family tree (also Hopkins and Cole". To view the "living" - please send me your email address and I can give you permission to view the living.
I am not able to afford to renew my membership to Ancestry right now however I am still trying to find info and I'm able to add that info to my tree without a membership.
I was also hoping (really hoping!!!) that you might have photos of any of the Brighouse family - including brothers or sisters, etc of George and Emma Brighouse (Wilkinson). It is so much easier to work with a family tree if you can put a face to a name. Thanks so much! Take care,
Dianne Stone
Niagara Falls, ON Canada

I'm really sorry...I was just going over old messages and came across the one you had written asking me to post a link to my family tree. My tree is called "McIntee/Brighouse Family tree (also Hopkins & Cole)". The link is http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/11998567/family?cfpid=-346893...
Please let me know if you have any trouble viewing it. Not sure if I have already told you...I can change the settings so that you can view the "living" but I have to send the invitation to your email address. If you still need this - please let me know. Thanks so much again and have a great day! Take care,
Dianne Stone

Hi Manuia! I am trying to get back into my family tree research...it has been quite some time since I have worked on it. I am unable to renew my membership with Ancestry at this time as money is tight but hope to do so in the near future. I have received great news from Christine...she found the marriage certificate for Thomas Wilkinson Brighouse and the widow - Marie Pettibone. So...Marie must be my gramma's mother! Christine is going to try to find info on Marie, William Pettibone and my gramma's birth. This great news has sparked my interest again so I am trying to become familiar with all I had previously learned. Thanks so much for your help - I don't know what I would have done without people like you! Take care

Dianne

Actually there was no attachment, I was going to attach a zip file, but could not manage to make one, then forgot to remove the attachment bit.

To order that microfilm you go to a Mormon Family History Centre. Look in your phone book under Church of Latter Day Saints, and give them a call, in order to find one near you.

Or look on www.familysearch.org, and find something about FHCs in Canada. When you find one, go visit the centre, take with you the information about the microfilm with the call up number. Give them this number and name and they will order in a copy of the microfilm. You will have to pay a small fee. When it arrives at the Centre they will contact you and you go in and read the microfilm on one of their machines. Choose one that either prints out what is on the screen, or allows you to save it to a memory stick.

At www.familysearch.org there is a heading Library Catalog. If you open it you find a search box where you can write in a place of interest. Write in Samoa. Various headings appear. Choose civil registrations, then a list of all the registration microfilms appears. Click on whichever one looks appropriate. You will get all the information about that microfilm with its call up number, that you need to order a copy. Print it out and take it to the FHC, as explained before.

I use it at the library sometimes.
If someone invites me, I can probably see it.

I found TW Brighouse's will and have copied it, over 20 pages, and a list of all the Brighouses born in Samoa, just an index, no parents given

Christine - you are very good at this! I am still an amateur! I couldn't open the attachment through Ancestry on your previous message re TWB's Will. Possibly because it is so large. If it isn't too much trouble, could you please try to send it to my email: whisperstone6@hotmail.com? This is so exciting!
In regard to this message you have sent...I have no idea how to obtain that info on microfilm - or where I would go to get that information. As I said - there is a lot I haven't learned yet in conducting research on my family tree.
I had to cancel my membership on Ancestry as I can't afford it at this time. I lost my job when I had to stay home to care for my Dad and now I am on a disability and not earning enough. I am hoping to care for children in my home to earn extra money and I will renew my membership asap.
Thanks again!
Dianne

Thanks for your understanding Manuia. My computer has been really slow lately so I haven't had the patience to use it. I have a service man coming to check out our internet and hopefully that will take care of it. I also need ink for my printer so I can print out these messages as I need to get back into it.
I have not heard that George had a disability and I believe what the other member wrote is true...that one used their toes to pull the trigger as the barrel of the gun was too long to hold in their hand. I get a visual of this everytime I talk about it...it is sooo sad.
I really appreciate all the help you and others are offering - thanks so much!

Mona is listed there, as is George and other children, but their nos are quite different.
George is no 404 vol 8, Norah is 405 vol 8, and the others follow on, but Mona is no 520 vol 8, so was presumably registered at a different time.

Volume 8 was not on the microfilm. I don't know whether it has been filmed or even whether it still exists. But now at least we know she was born in Samoa.

Samoan BRIGHOUSE

I have been trying to find the name of my gramma's mother but not very successful. My mother was Muriel Hopkins (maiden name McIntee). Her mother's name was Mona Annie McIntee, married to Ernest A McIntee born in Welland, ON, Canada(maiden name Brighouse. I found a marriage record that shows Mona's father was Thomas Brighouse and mother "does not know". Her mother died giving birth to her. The only stories I have heard is that my gramma was born in Figi and her father (Thomas) sent her to live with an aunt in England when her mother died. She was then sent to live with an aunt in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Another member of the Brighouse family wrote me and said that Thomas had a son George and daughter Mona from a first marriage but when his wife died, he moved to Samoa and married a lady named Fati. They had a number of children and I am hoping that one of these children might have some information on Thomas' first marriage. I have searched England, Fiji, Samoa, Ontario and New Zealand records and cannot find anything re my gramma Mona's birth or the marriage of her parents. Please help me if you have any info on Thomas Wilkinson Brighouse and his first marriage.

Talofa Dianne:

Per info sent in from Christine:
2) CASE OF SUICIDE
Evening Post, Volume CVIII, Issue 87, 9 October 1929, Page 13
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
AUCKLAND, This Tuesday. A half-caste Samoan, George Brighouse, aged 18, employed as a labourer at Wainui, was found dead with his head badly shattered. There was a shotgun on the floor nearby.
Hi Christine. On my family tree, under my gramma's name "Mona Annie Brighouse" I have a "story" I wrote. I think it is named "Updated March 24, 2010-my Story of search to find info on gramma Mona Annie Brighouse's ancestry." In this story, I have tried to keep up with new info I have learned re my gramma Mona however, as I said I haven't worked on my research since my Dad passed away in May 2010 as I have had a very difficult time dealing with his loss.
I had originally been told by my aunts that my gramma had been sent to live with an aunt in England when she was 4 years old however, I now believe that she had actually been sent to live with TWB's mother. When she passed away, I believe she lived with an aunt who also passed away (I think she died in 1917). I'm not sure what my gramma did from then until she sailed for Canada in 1921 to live with her aunt in Toronto. Gramma was 16 at that time. I did find a record of her arrival and I have saved it in her records in my family tree. My family tree is named "McIntee/Brighouse Family Tree (also Hopkins & Cole). If you are interested in my "story", please look under my gramma's name. I am Dianne Stone (Hopkins)- daughter of Muriel Hopkins (McIntee)- daughter of Mona Annie McIntee (Brighouse) Thanks again for your interest! Take care
Dianne

Hello again! I am going to have to go back to all the forums and print off the info that had been posted previously. I have put this all aside since my Dad passed away in May 2010 and I really need to get back into it.
TWB had another daughter named Ramona - "Mona" was her shorter name. That Ramona was born in 1914 whereas my gramma Mona was born in 1906. Ramona was sent by the Mormons to be raised in Utah.
I wonder if what TWB said in the Claims of American Citizens in Apia, Samoa...about Marie Pettibone being the mother of my gramma Mona is true as he claims. I had been told by my aunts that my gramma's mother had died giving birth to her however, I don't know if that is true.
I also wondered if this Sinapa'i..the mother of George - could have been the mother of my gramma too however, I have not found anything to prove that.
I had found the birth info on George Brighouse on Family Search. I sent for the death certificate of George Brighouse and he did commit suicide in NZ. I was told by a member of the Samoan Brighouse family that George asked his father if he could return to Samoa and when TWB said no...he shot himself. I have no proof that is true.
I think it is difficult for me to conduct research re the Samoan Brighouse family as I am not familiar with the geograpical area, their customs or the language. I should be reading up on it...just seems like such a huge project!
Before I can do much more...I am going to have to review what I have on my family tree so that I get back into a "feel" of the family. Thanks so much for your help!
Dianne

Single emigrated to NZ on 21 May 1902 aboard the 'Ruapehu '.
2) Romona Brighouse born 27 Aug.1914 at Sapapali, Samoa
3) Father:- T.W.Brighouse Mother:- Sinapa'i
4) George Brighouse died NZ 1929 aged 21 yrs
5) Thomas Wilkinson Brighouse died 19 Jun.1945 Apia.

best of luck - Graham.C
.....
1) TWB is 22yrs old; if birth is correct.

2) This child is daughter of Fati & TWB, at which I have looked at births of children and Fati begins having kids at age 13, he lives exactly 32 years and who knows when he met Fati, or who he met first, and they had exactly 15 kids.

3) I believe Sinapa'i is George's birth mother. I believe Nite and Fati are from the same aiga/Family and I believe also Sinapa'i, or she is associated in some way. This is just too coincidental for it all not to be. Samoans don't send their offsprings off island unless the child had very influential accommodations...hmmm...this TWB is a character indeed.

4) Whether George was 18 or 21years of age, we'd still have to see the original to verify anything.

5) NO COMMENT.
.....
I have labeled each statement 1 thru 5 just to make it easier, the original did not come that way.

Manuia,
--Manaia
[manaiaalofa@yahoo.com]

If you are interested, you might want to look at my family tree "McIntee/Brighouse Family Tree (also Hopkins & Cole). I did learn that George Brighouse (brother of Mona) committed suicide in New Zealand after his father refused to allow him to return home to Samoa. I will also try the search you recommended and I will let you know if I learn anything by entering "Fiji"...that is something I hadn't thought of (not knowing the geographical area...). It really helps when someone else interprets info differently than I. I get "stuck" sometimes so I really appreciate your input.

here is the full text of the Claims of American citizens

"claims of american citizens in apia, samoan islands.

Claim No. 14.
william r. pettibone.

This claimant asked for $1,499.76 for damages allied to have been suffered at the Apia Hotel and at a beer garden about a mile back from the beach, which places he appears to have been managing at the outbreak of the war, and for a number of horses said to have been taken from him by the hostile natives. Loss of prospective profits seems to have made up a large part of the claim, which is supported
only by the affidavit of the claimant.

This claimant left Samoa some time ago on a vessel bound for the United States and is reported to have been lost at sea, although no very definite information could be obtained on this point. The records of the consulate at Apia bear this note opposite the claimant's registration: '' Returned to the United States March 11, 1905.''

At any rate, claimant's wife seems to have been married in 1905 to Thomas Brighouse, of Apia, to have had a child by that marriage, and to have died in 1908.

Mr. Brighouse appeared before me on behalf of said child, Mona, who, he said, was living in England. He stated then and at a later date that he had endeavored to obtain evidence as to the alleged losses of this claimant, but had been unable to do so. Still later Mr. Brighouse advised me that he had discovered two witnesses and would
produce them, but he failed to do so.

It was afterwards ascertained from an inspection of the records of the American consulate that William Blacklock apparently had an assignment of this claim made by Pettibone, and accordingly Herbert Brown, heretofore referred to as being Mr. Blacklock's attorney in
fact in Apia, was advised of this and invited to produce evidence to support the claim. He said that he had no advices on the subject from Mr. Blacklock and did not know that he would be able to find any evidence regarding the claim, but that he would endeavor to do so. He produced no such evidence, however.

Under the circumstances, it is recommended that no allowance be made on this claim.
........
http://www.archive.org/stream/claimsamericanc00bakegoog/clai...

If Mona was born in 1906, either in Samoa or Fiji, then went to England as a small child or baby, she should appear in the UK Census of 1911, with her relatives.

Go to www.Familysearch.org, then Family History Library, Library Catalog, write in "Fiji" under Place, click on Civil registrations, then " General Births" or " General Marriages". Look for the microfilm for the period covering 1906. Print out its name and call number. Go to a Mormon Family History Centre and supply them with the name and call number of the microfilm. They will then order in a copy of that film for you. It will come there a few weeks later, and they will contact you. Then go and read the film.If you find the entry, print it out or at least copy it,
Good luck.
Christine

Thank you so very much for this info! How very, very sad for this young man to end his life. I am so grateful that you took the time to find the newspaper article on this and I can't wait to share this info with my elderly aunts (the daughters of Mona Annie Brighouse/McIntee).

No - I haven't looked up any records on Fiji births, marriages, etc however, I did write to the Minister of Births, Marriages and Deaths in Samoa requesting any records of my gramma's birth (Mona Annie Brighouse)and the death of her mother...whomever that may be but possibly Marie Pettibone. I also asked if there was a marriage record showing that Thomas Wilkinson Brighouse had married my gramma's mother. When I hadn't heard back in a month, I wrote again and received a reply that they hadn't found anything yet. My Dad passed away shortly afterwards and I have had a very difficult time dealing with his loss. I haven't got back into my research again but hoping to soon. Please, please continue to send me any info you come across as I definitely intend to get back at it once I can concentrate better. Thanks so much again!
Dianne
PS - I really don't know how to where or how to look up microfilm at an LDC FHC?

Hello whisperstone6:

I took the liberty of posting the message (below) to the FIJI Board. I'd read your posts on the SAMOA General board and here and thought to help as I've had dealings with UNKNOWN relatives.:)

If you've new facts or info, please let us know.

THX!
--Manaia
[manaiaalofa@yahoo.com]
.....
Hello/BULA/Talofa:

I found a marriage record that shows Mona's father was Thomas Brighouse and mother "does not know". Her mother died giving birth to her. The only stories I have heard is that my gramma was born in Figi and her father (Thomas) sent her to live with an aunt in England when her mother died. She was then sent to live with an aunt in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Another member of the Brighouse family wrote me and said that Thomas had a son George and daughter Mona from a first marriage but when his wife died, he moved to Samoa and married a lady named Fati.--BRIGHOUSE descent[RW Posted: 27 Jul 2009 4:29AM GMT]
......
I am searching any/all info re Mona Anne BRIGHOUSE's birth mother; also her brother George BRIGHOUSE.

I am interested in all information re her birth mother; if she is Fijian, or Samoan, or Tongan; possibly of Polynesian descent?

I am after Thomas W. BRIGHOUSE's relationship involving UNKNOWN woman in Fiji. Children known: Mona Anne and George.

Regardless of how insignificant data may be to you, it may just be the 'brick' needed to blow this case sky high.

THX/VINAKA/Fa'afetai!

Spelling Variations of Brighouse

Has anyone run into a variation of the name as 'Brickhouse'? I'm asking because my oldest Brickhouse ancestor came to the American colonies around the mid-1600's, but I can't find any references to that surname in England. I know that spelling was most often done phonetically back then, and wonder if Brickhouse is a respelling of Brighouse.

Unfortunately, I don't know when this man was born, or even when he came here. His name was George Brickhouse and he was first an indentured servant, but I don't know how many years of service he gave. Once he had his freedom, he wed Hannah Luddington, in Hunger's Parish, Northampton County, Virginia. He died in 1688 and the family was either Quaker or had great empathy for Quakers as he left property for a Quaker Meeting House at his death.

Thanks.
