I think we might have a connection. Richard Brighton & Elizabeth Green were parents of Robert, Charles Green, George and Oakley.

Robert Brighton became a gamekeeper to the Hare family at Stow Hall in Stow Bardolph, Norfolk, and married Sarah Annis of Norwich St Gregory. He named his second son Charles Green (1790-1870). My line is through Robert's two daughters Elizabeth (1795-1842) and Priscilla (1798-1863). Elizabeth was my gggg-grandmother and her husband was John Hoys Chamberlain who, 20 days after her burial, eloped with her sister Priscilla. I'm sure there were a few eyebrows raised about that!

Charles Green Brighton, son of Richard & Elizabeth and brother of Robert, became a gamekeeper to the Majendie family at Hedingham Castle in Essex. I think that Charles Green was the father of George of Lakenham and later of Cornwall.

Have plenty of information about Robert's family; his siblings are a new avenue for me!

Kind regards
Holly

Re: WILLIAM BRIGHTON and MARTHA BLAND

Hello Glen

You have managed to find out the information I found as well. I believe Martha was actually born in Great Yarmouth Workhouse. Her mother was Caroline Bland and Martha's middle name is Caroline. Interestingly Martha had a sister Julia born 1862, in the Workhouse.

I found Martha in Bermondsey in 1861 but couldn't find her in 1871 but she is then 'married' to William Brighton sometime after 1871. The marriage in 1906 is theirs, I am certain. Their third child was May Lily and she was my grandmother. She used to tell us that her father had divorced but I would have thought divorce in those days was not very common and only for the fairly wealthy. At that time William was still making his name as a boatbuilder so not wealthy but on the 'up'.

In 1871 he was still living with his first wife who my grandmother used to say 'was a wrong 'un' but don't know what she meant by that. By 1881 he had met Martha who was a housekeeper in a large house in London and they had 'married' and had returned to the Yarmouth area. Mary Ann, William's first wife I think moved to Yarmouth after their 'divorce'. I have her living there until her death in - 1906 - which is why I am certain that the marriage in 1906 is definitely William and Martha

He was born to a George Brighton and Lucy Bloom and had 4 sisters. He died in 1915 and Martha died I think about 193'ish but would have to delve more into my records to confirm that.

Hope you continue to have good luck researching your own family history.

Many thanks

Carole

Dear Carole,

Your post intrigued me so I did a bit of research. It appears that Martha Bland was born in Q2 1848 (Yarmouth 13 404). In 1851 she is in the workhouse in Yarmouth and I think she is living in Bermondsey by 1861. I can find no other entry for Martha in 1871 but by 1881 she is the wife of William Brighton (Boat Builder), they have two children (William and Martha).

There are entries for them both in the in the 1891/1901/1911 census.

Interestingly in Q3 1906 there is a wedding of William Brighton to Martha Caroline Bland (Mutford 4a 2165). Same people?

In the 1871 census William Brighton is living with his wife Mary Ann and his mother-in-law Mary Ann Smith. What happened to her?

Hope this helps.

Glen

Morning Peter

yes, a coincidence in the names Brighton and Bland. I know that my William had relations who emigrated to Australia, as well as Canada. I think they were cousins, or descendants of cousins, but at the moment can't find the information. My computer crashed and I lost most of my information. Do you belong to Genes Reunited? If so there is a chap on there who I think is from Australia and descended from the same line as my William. Good luck with your search and if I manage to fine we have a connection I'll let you know.

Carole

Hi Maryanne,

No idea who Roy's father was--the 1930 census in Indy has his father as born in England and his mother in Ohio. It's not that common a name in the US, so he could be anyone's son or no one's son. He did have one daughter eventually so it would be nice to connect the dots.

Thanks, I'll keep on it.

Deborah

The family of Isaac Brighton was in Wayne Co, Plain Twp,, OH, in 1840 and 1850. His wife Elizabeth is buried in the Blatchlyville, OH, cemetery, and Isaac moved on to Indiana to join his sons Ephriam, Levi, and Alexander in Greene County, IN, by 1860.

There was a son William who died in the Civil War and a daughter Martha who married an I. Scruby. There is some indication from the 1840 census that there may have been two other older sons of Isaac and Elizabeth, but I don't know names or dates.

Roy looks to be too young for our family unless he was a child of one of the unknown older sons. Do you have any idea who his father was?

Many of the Brightons through Ephriam's line are still in Indiana, around Gosport, Terre Haute, and Indianapolis.

Maryanne Newsom-Brighton

Re: Brighton

Thank you for your kind offer, Glen. I do have some Brighton links in Norfolk.

My most distant known ancestor was Robert Brighton of Stow Bardolph, for 55 years the gamekeeper and steward of Stow Hall Estate (owned by the Hare family, baronets), as stated on his grave inside Holy Trinity Church in Stow, which was erected by the Hares. He married Sarah Annis at Norwich St Gregory on 26 Oct 1787 and they had children Robert Jr, George, Elizabeth, Priscilla and Lydia, all born and baptised either in Stow or in nearby Wallington-cum-Thorpland, where the family lived. There are gaps in the Archdeacon's Transcripts for Stow Bardolph between 14 May 1789 and 27 June 1791, and again from 22 May 1792 and 14 July 1794, and it would appear that Robert and Sarah had two other children during these periods, Charles and John.

Robert Brighton Sr died intestate on 26 January 1842 at Stow Bardolph and his widow renounced the letters of administration later that summer in favour of their eldest son, Robert. The renunciation was witnessed by Charles Brighton, likely their second son. Sarah died on 24 December 1844 at Wimbotsham, where she appears to have been living with her grandson William Brighton Chamberlain, who registered her death.

Of Robert and Sarah's children, my connection is through two of their daughters: Elizabeth, christened at Stow on 19 Sep 1795, who married John Hoys Chamberlain at Runcton Holme on 23 Feb 1815 and died at Stow on 25 May 1842; and Priscilla, born at Wallington-cum-Thorpland and baptised 7 Feb 1798 at Stow, and who also married the same John Hoys Chamberlain: they eloped to Wisbech on 21 June 1842, 20 days after Elizabeth was buried at Stow. Priscilla died at Stow on 16 Feb 1863 and John Hoys Chamberlain died there on 19 July 1867. He was the local registrar of births and deaths. All three are buried in the churchyard at Holy Trinity: John and Elizabeth share a headstone on which she is described as "beloved wife of", but Priscilla's stone has just her initials and the year of death: I wonder who was in charge of sorting out the inscriptions. Priscilla's stone has broken and has been placed against the churchyard wall near the Chamberlain graves.

The other children of Robert and Sarah Brighton stayed generally in the area around Downham Market. Robert Jr became a gamekeeper in Wallington and later a farmer in Shouldham. He married firstly to Mary Poulter of Bottisham, Cambs, and secondly to Elizabeth Acres (née Southgate). There were 11 children (including 2 sets of twins) from his first marriage.

John, one of the two possible children of Robert and Sarah whose baptism would fall during the gaps in the register, was born around 1790 in Stow and married firstly Maria Chamberlain at Great Massingham: Great Massingham was the birthplace of John Hoys Chamberlain, but it would appear that Maria was a cousin rather than a sister. Lydia Brighton, daughter of Robert and Sarah, was one of the witnesses and John was described as being 'of the Parish of Wallington', where Robert and Sarah were then living, at the time of his marriage. Unlike other children of Robert and Sarah, however, John signed his name with an X, whereas his possible siblings Robert Jr, Charles, Elizabeth, Priscilla and Lydia were all able to sign their own names. John Brighton married secondly to Anne Maltby of Shouldham

Charles Brighton is the other possible son. He was one of the witnesses to the administration of the estate of Robert Brighton. He married firstly to Elizabeth Norman at Stow Bardolph, at which time John Hoys Chamberlain was a witness, and secondly to Hannah Wood, also at Stow. There was one known child of each marriage.

George Brighton, son of Robert and Sarah, was born and died in 1794 at Stow.

Elizabeth and Priscilla I've already mentioned; Priscilla appears to have lived with her parents until her marriage and was the witness to a number of family events.

Lydia was the youngest, born in 1803 at Wallington. She married Samuel Levy in 1826 at Runcton Holme and they had two, possibly three children in King's Lynn. She was widowed in 1859 and by 1871 was living in Teversall, Nottinghamshire, where she died in 1876.

Happy to share any information.

Holly Adams
Cambridge, UK

I am working on the Brighton family who were in Worcester, Ohio, in the 1840's-1860's, then moved to Greene County, Indiana in the 1860's to 1880's. Father Isaac Brighton married to Catherine, sons Alexander, Levi, and Ephriam and probably others. Catherine is buried in Ohio, Isaac in Worthington, Indiana. Family finally relocated to Gosport, indiana, in the late 1880's after Ephriam's death.

Hello Glen
I thought i would tell you some of the variations i have come across in the last one thousand years of history, see if any are familiar, they were Brito, Briton, Breton, Bretton, Bretun and Bryton, i have a lot of historical documents that show the variations, i think it's because they couldn't spell for nuts, it also depends on how the documents were translated, a lot of them were in old English, french and latin, so yes it can be quite a minefield when searching for our ancestors, catch you later, Charles

Charles,

Glad to have been a little help, I have seen many different spellings of our name, I admit that Brightling is one of the odd ones. I guess when you think about it most of them will not have been able to spell and any kind of regional accent will have defined how it was spelt.

Glen

Hello Glen, i thought i had come across the name Sarah Howes
in my research the last time i was home, whilst looking through the Wymondham parish records i came accross this entry,Robert Brightling of this parish batchelor and Sarah Howes of the same parish, spinster were married by banns eighth day of May 1779, both Robert and Sarah made their mark, witnesses were Mary Thomas and Jeremiah Forster, it also seems that Robert was born in 1781 and had a sister named Elizabeth born 1782,Hanah born 1786, Mary born 1788 and John born 1789, i would never have thought that the surname would have been misspelled but for the fact you mentioned the name of Robert's mother, i should have known because our name has been misspelled many times over the centuries, so thank you once more my long lost relative, Charles C Brighton.

Thanks Glen
Yes indeed that ia the Robert Brighton i was referring to and yes it is as i thought,by the way i am Charles c Brighton and no matter what we are all related, i have information going back on my line to 80 a.d so if you want the info you are quite welcome, but most of it is in jpeg format, they are translations of very old texts and records and there is a family tree that was written by dugdale, so far i have located eight coats of arms that belong to our family, our name evolved from Brito and there have been many variations through history, it took me about a year and quite a few consultations with a few universties to get the info and then seperate my family line, that's why i had about four thousand pages, the search for me was made more difficult because allthough i was born in England i now live in Australia, but i am planning a trip home, anyway if you like you can contact me at ccbbrite@hotmail.com, and if you wish i will saend any info that i can provide for you, catch you later cousin, regards Charles

Hi, I presume the Robert you are talking about married Sarah Scent in 1806? They went on to have four children...William in 1809, Mary Ann in 1811, Robert in 1818 and Thomas in 1828?

I have a note that says his father might be Robert Brighton and mother Sarah Howes? If I am right he also had a sister Mary born in 1784 and a brother called John born in 1789?

I think that Robert might of had a brother called John who married Elizabeth Daniel? They went on to have a number of children.

I have no idea if this will help in any way, my Brighton roots are more in the Wednesbury region of Staffordshire.

I know this might be a bit late, but i have only just started out in geneology, your Robert Brighton, was he from Wynondhan, Norfolk, if so then he is probably a son of another Robert Brighton born in Wymondham in 1786, that is my line, but i am stuck with the Robert of 1786, at the moment i am trying to find out who his father was, i have checked some of the medieval manuscripts and come up with a few entries, anyway if you are still interested in family geneology you can contact me on this forum or at ccbbrite@hotmail.com, hope to hear from you, Charles.
Hi, btbdance,

I am also interested in BRIGHTONs from Norfolk, Devon and Cornwall.

The BRIGHTONs I am researching were mainly farmers and gardeners and moved from Norfolk around the turn of the century [18th to 19th] to Cornwall and Devon [settling around Exeter, Beer Ferris, Stoke Damerel, Plymouth and Maker].

Trish

Re: MATTHEW LOCK BRIGHTON - NORFOLK

Hello Michelle. I'm descended from Henry Overton (b Kings Lynn 1839) an elder brother of your Elizabeth Overton (b1842). Our common ancestors are Richard Overton (b1804) and Martha Greef (b1805). Incidentally Martha was baptised in Swaffham on 1 Nov 1805, the same date and place that Richard's sister was baptised. So the Greefs and Overtons clearly knew each other over many years. My Henry moved to Cambridge where our family have been ever since. Have you traced the whereabouts of other Overtons? Regards, Mark Ward
