I am related to NYC (Brooklyn/Queens)Brimlows. Caroline Hobson is in my tree. Personal notes of Frederick Brimlow with Lincoln death memorial located in personal effects of Anna Alida Tryon Brimlow deceased in the 1970's. Family line seems to live larger than life, risk takers, strong personalities and convictions and equally strong addictions!

Regarding Deborah (Gedney) Woodhall Brimlow, her death certificate No. 19974 yields: widow Deborah Brimlow (mistakenly transcribed as "Brimbow" in Brooklyn Death Index, but Brimlow on original), died 16 Nov 1895, 249 Broadway, 2nd Floor (single family residence), Williamsburg (in Brooklyn), Kings Co., New York; age 70 y. (or 76 y. - difficult to decipher), 6 mo., of apoplexy, buried 19 Nov 1895 in Mamaroneck, N.Y. . . . . Yes, she appears in the 1892 NY State Census with son Arthur W. Brimlow ("compositor [type setter]"), his wife Ellen F. (Vail) and their daughter Eadith G. Brimlow. However, the census does not give an address for each family and "253 Broadway" appears only once at the top of the page, defining merely the neighborhood for more than 100 names. Thus, I think we can assume son Arthur actually lived at 249 Broadway from 1892-1895 at least (he died in 1896) and that Deborah died in his home where she had recently been living. However, Arthur never appears in any Brooklyn directory, and mother Deborah was very inteinerant in her late years within this neighborhood, and many directories have her living at 202 Roebling St. (1888), 101 Hevemeyer St. (1891). None of these are addresses of other published family members, unless also the addresses of Arthur who mysteriously never appears in print. Perhaps Deborah was the "head of household" for not just herself, but the family of her son Arthur with whom she lived in all these locations. Arthur's brother (Deborah's other son) was incidentally a printer too, thus in a related business. If Arthur worked for (or under) his brother, this would be another reason why Arthur seems never to appear in print in a directory, etc. Fortunately, Deborah Brimlow's death certificate specifically says "Mamaroneck", not merely "Westchester" as for so many other Gedney deaths in NYC. The "Mamaroneck" citation, one may assume, refers to the Eleazor Gedney Burial Ground, 1205 Mamaroneck Avenue, where parents and first husband and first son are buried. There, parents and husband/son are not buried together in this small cemetery and there would have been no room to be buried with her parents in 1895. So she is likely an unmarked burial (first I know of definitively) with first husband and first son and does not appear in the 1923 (original hand notes in the Gedney Family Manuscript Files, NYPL), Nov. 1925 NYGB Record, or 2009 Sutherland transcripts of this cemetery. Finally, in all these transcripts, the surname for her first husband is "Woodhall", not "Woodhull". Given her transient late years and loss of children immediatley before/after her death, perhaps there simply was no money or desire to obtain a gravestone for her burial location. But now we know where she is.

Very interesting about Cypress Hill plot size - thanks for saving me the trip. I got the same reply in a phone call to the cemetery, but just blindly emailed last week and received the nicest response, together with all transcribed internment dates. Deborah was the 3rd of three children of Abraham Gedney (1763-1850) and Mary Hains (1784-1838) both buried in the Eleazer Gedney Cemetery, Mamaroneck, Westchester Co., NY, together with her 1st husband Thomas Woodhall (1818-1850) and 3rd child of that marriage, Leander Byron Woodhall (1846-1869). Today, that cemetery is sadly contained within the cloverleaf exit 18B of I-95 but was once part of the vast Gedney family land holdings in and near Mamaroneck and White Plains. The Eleazer Gedney Cemetery was transcribed by hand in 1923, which was then published in 1925 in the NYGB Record but most recently, thoroughly and brilliantly transcribed by William Sutherland in 2009 and you can see the headstones and data for all mentioned above here: http://www.theedwardbulwer-lyttoninstitute.org/uploads/1/7/5...

Deborah was not included in any of these transcripts of the Gedney Cemetery, thus I'm sure she is elsewhere. As I live in Manhattan, I'll go down to the Municipal Archives this morning to see what I find (thanks for the info); I'm there often. Listed cemeteries are hit/miss on NYC death certs, however. As son Arthur IS in C.H., she possibly went to live with one of her daughters or remaining son in the years 1892-1895 and possibly away from NYC. They are: Mary E. Woodhall, b. 1840, Manhattan, Josephine E. Woodhall, b. 1843, Manhattan, Frederick Austin Brimlow (1855, Manhattan -aft. 1920, Brooklyn - NOT in C.H.), and less likely, Ella H. Brimlow (1858, Brooklyn-1916, Brooklyn and IN C.H.). Will keep you posted if NYC Archives yields new info.

I've wondered this myself where Deborah Brimlow would be buried. All the church records I have of the family are of Methodist Episcopal churches and I believe the only other probable place she would be buries is Evergreen cemetery. I've been to Cypress Hills to visit the Brimlow plot and would you believe with all those internments there is not one marker? It is 4 graves wide, 4 graves long and 2 to 3 graves deep. I have an 1880s list of heirs to the plot, which does not include Deborah, but I have information for you that would make it possible to order her 1895 death certificate from the NYC municipal archives on Chambers street.
BRIMLOW DEBORAH 70y NOV 16 1895 BROOKLYN Cert #19974
This would give you her place of internment and possibly parents names.

I am going to go through William Brimlow's (1825-1863) civil war records and pension records as I believe it may have a reference or two to Deborah. William was wounded May 5, 1862 in the battle of Williamsburg VA with the 87th N.Y. Infantry "Brooklyn Rifles" and died of disease Jan. 25 '63 in Camp Pitcher in Alexandria. William Brimlow Sr. died at 75 Taylor st. in Williamsburg, Bklyn in 1873.
The 1892 census has Deborah living at her son Arthur Brimlow's house at 253 Broadway in Brooklyn, and Arthur died a few years later in 1896.
Nice job getting all those internment dates from Cypress Hills, when I inquired about that they wanted $10 per burial just to get some bare information.
I'm a Gedney researcher. William's 2nd wife mentioned in the query was Deborah Gedney (bef. 1817-1895). She was previously married to Thomas Woodhall (bef. 1818-1850). She had three children in each marriage, and 2 of her three children (Arthur Brimlow, 1853-1896, and Ella H. Brimlow, 1858-1916) with 2nd husband William Brimlow (1800-1873) are burried at Cypress Hill, Brooklyn, NY; Lot 68, Sect. 2. I was hoping to find Deborah buried with William too but she is not. Her first husband, Thomas Woodhall, is buried in the Eleazer Gedney Cemetery, Mamaroneck, Westechester Co., NY with one of their three children. If you know where Deborah is interred, please post that information - but in the interim, I'm attaching the Cypress Hill plot card for the William Brimlow family where William's first wife, Anne (Chaddock or Wood. 1797-1851) was the first burial. The cemetery staff person took the time to reference every date of burial; take note these are burial dates, not death dates.

Mt dad Richard Brimlow lives in Mystic, CT, and my brother Ken Brimlow lives in Iowa. Thought you might be interested.....

Thank you for replying. Yes, I would love to see the photo! I am actually doing the research for my husband who is a direct descendant of Henrietta (I'm just more of a history buff and his family has been far easier to research than mine.)

I read through the history you had written up about William and the 87th infantry. I find conflicting information once in a while, but I just keep looking until I find another source that supports one or the other. I've had to redo some bits of the tree recently.

Hello, Henrietta is the older sister of my 3rd great grandmother. I have a photo of Henrietta from about 1865 that a distant cousin sent me. Henrietta was born in manhattan but grew up mostly in the south side of williamsburg, brooklyn. Her uncle William 1825-1863 fought and died in the 87th ny infantry in the civil war$
I have conflicting records on her grandparents William and Anne. I found 2 marriage records from 1819: William Brimlow and Anne wood in London, and a William Brimlow to an Anne Chaddock in Chesire. Their kids were born in different places so its tough to know which is which.
I work very close to the area that the brimlows lived c. 1860s-1900s.
I am guessing you are related through marriage?
I can send you that picture if you like.
I am a Brimlow and have done extensive research into the family. All the Brimlow families seem to have come from the Manchester, England area.

There was a George, that I came across, listed in Ohio in about 1880. There is a large group of Brimlows from his family around the Toledo area. I communicated with a David Brimlow from this line and maybe he can be of help to you. His email address is dbrimlow@earthlink.net.

There are several lines of Brimlows that are keeping in touch and there was a reunion in Georgia two years ago which included at least one family member from each line except mine (my sister and I had weren't able to make it). There was even a Stan Brimlow from Wales that came with his family. We are trying to link the whole group.

Feel free to email about the Brimlow family and I'll be glad to give you any help I can.

Connie (Brimlow) Pagano

William Brimlow of NYC 1800-1875

It's possible no one will ever see this post, but I am a Brimlow on my father's mother's side. most Brimlows in the NY area are a descendant of William and Anne Brimlow. Here's some random info i've dug up.

William and Anne Brimlow were married in England in 1819. They arrived in NYC with their five children George, William Jr., Henry, Jane, and John aboard the ship Ajax on Nov. 29, 1832. The oldest son George is my great-great-great grandfather.

They resided on the lower east-side at 59 Cherry St just a few blocks from the South St. Seaport. William S.r ran a coffee-house at 16 James St, where his sons worked for him. I have George & William Brimlows naturalization petitions from 1841 as well as census records of the entire family.

Around 1855 the Brimlows picked up and moved to the Village of Williamsburg, the eastern part of the City of Brooklyn. It was around this time that Anne Brimlow died and William later re-married to Deborah. I have many addresses for them in Williamsburg Bklyn through city directories and censuses.
George Brimlow married a girl named Elizabeth in 1841, and William Jr. married a Sophia a few years later.
William Jr. joined the NY 87th Infantry in 1861 and was a veteran of many battles in the Virginia campaign. He was wounded in the battle of Fredericksburg in Dec. 1862 and succumed to disease in an army hospital on Jan. 2, 1863.

George Brimlows' children are as follows:
Elizabeth, Henrietta, Jane, Amelia, George Jr, and Ida and Ada (twins born in 1859).

Ada Brimlow married Henry W. Pidgeon (1880)
Elizabeth Pidgeon m. Thomas Ryan (1901)
Harry Ryan m. Madeleine Munk (1929)
Ann Ryan m. Bernard Beal (my father's parents)

If anyone thinks they might be a relative, feel free to contact me.

Calling all Brimlows! I know there are a few of us out there. It almost seems as if my family's name has been changed over the years for some reason or another. Any information on the Brimlow family would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
