Further to my previous email have reason to believe that your "Eliza" was my Grandfather's sister. My maiden name was Brinkworth. Would be wonderful to know thgat there are some descendants still living in the area. There are 18 grandchildren of Charles surviving, and we meet for Sunday lunch about 3 times a year. We are meeting again on 20th. November.

We we are trying to find out about our Grandfather, Charles Brinkworth. He was born in 1870, one of 9 children. Parents George and Sarah. We were told that he was stolen by gypsies when he was 5 years old, and only returned home when he was about 17. We are inclined to believe this as he never went to schoool and only learned to read and write as an adult. Would love to know if this is true. One sister went to America. He served in 1914-18 war. He fathered 9 children, one died 10 days old. Their names were William, Charles, George, Walter, Joseph, Emily, Alice, Sarah and Winifred. Some probably family names. Here's hoping - Shirley Dicks nee Brinkworth.

I just accessed this site and find that you responded to my brother's (Bob Brehm) inquiry of 2002 about Ian Brinkworth.
I had the good fortune to meet up with Ian in 1958, after he returned from Nigeria. He met my wife and I in London and we stayed at his home for a few days before returning to the States. I see that he died in 2000. Would appreciate any further info you might have.

Susie(Susan) Ravine/Nellie J. Shomber (ca. Aug 1884-?)

The 1933 obit of my mother's paternal uncle, William Wallace Austin, of Filley, Gage Co., NE, says he is survived by 3 daughters, Mrs. Frank Brinkworth of Lincoln, Mrs. Lloyd Clark of Beatrice, & Mrs. Nellie Shomber, no residence given.
However, William had only 3 known daughters who lived to marry; Floydia Belle m. Frank Brinkworth; Florence Myrtle m. Lloyd Clark; & Helen M. m. Fred McLean. Helen died in 1923 & is buried in her paternal grandfather's plot in Evergreen Home Cemetery, Beatrice, Gage Co., NE; with an unnamed McLean infant.
So, who is Mrs. Nellie Shomber? William m., 30 Apr 1892, Gage Co., NE, Effie D. MASON, b. 1867, IN; d. Aug 1949, Beatrice, d/o Robert & Olive KING Mason. The 1900 census says she is his wife of 9 yrs., mother of 4 children, 3 living & names Helen, Floydia & Myrtle. The 1910 census says she is his wife of 18 yrs., mother of 9 children, 5 living, but names only Helen, Floydia, & Myrtle. I didn't find William in the 1920 census. The 1930 census gives his age as 68, & Effie's age as 63. William's age at 1st m. is 32, but Effie's age at 1st m. is 15. That is, she was m. ca. 1882.
In the household of Effie's future paternal grandfather in 1885 are Asa, 3 & Susie Ravin, both b. NE, no relationship entered. family lore says these are Effie's children & that the father is one Frank Ravine, but I believe it more likely to be the Isaac Revine, 25, b. Canada, divorced, day
laborer, boarding with Effie's maternal grandparents, Loren & Catherine King, in Beatrice, on 18 Jun 1880. I next find Asa C. Ravine, in Filley, in 1910. I don't find Susie (Susan) Ravine in 1900 or 1910. I do find a Nellie J. Shomber, 26, b. NE, father b. Ireland; mother b. WI, married, an attendant at the Oregon State Asylum for the Insane, Salem, Marion Co., OR, on 4 May 1910. I don't find Nellie in 1920, but in 1930 I find Nelle J. Shomber, 44, b. NE, father b. US; mother b. WI, her age at 1st m., 24; an attendant at the Nebraska Institution for the Feeble
Minded in Midland Twp. Gage Co., NE. She is with spouse, Clayton J. Shomber, 45, b. KS,parents b. PA, a fireman at the institution, & their daughters, Elaine K., 12, b. NE &
Pauline D., 10, b. CO.
There are some differences in data, but, taken as a whole, I believe this shows Nellie J. Shomber, wife of Clayton to be the Susie Ravine born about August of 1884 to Effie D. Mason. Thoughts anyone?

Does anyone have any info on Isaac Brinkworth (born abt. 1800) and his wife Sarah (nee Bath?)(born abt.1800) from Corsham in Wiltshire. They are shown in the 1841 census as having 5 children :-George (1826), John (1829), William (1832),Jane (1834) and Ann (1837).Isaac and Sarah then seem to disappear from subsequent censuses although I do have the marriage certificate of Jane Brinkworth who married William Dix on 5th Oct 1853 which names Isaac as a witness to the marriage.
Any help would be appreciated on parents and other family links

Yes, Bishop, sorry for the confusion LOL Clara had Freda with her first husband Harry Kirkland. Freda had my Dad, Arnold, with her husband Arnold Edward Bishop Sr. So my Dad was Arnold Edward "Sonny" Bishop Jr. . . .

Everyone just called him Sonny or the nieces and nephews would call him Uncle Sonny sometimes . . .

I didn't mean to get you all messed up, sorry about that.

And I know that Bishop is a few generations from Brinkworth, but I've been trying like crazy to find out what happened to Harry Kirkland or Frederick, as he calls himself on the marriage record for he and Clara . . .

I sincerely thank you for the extra info on Joseph Brinkworth Sr. I was really stuck once i crossed to England. I had no clue how to pursue that or to even figure out which was the correct Brinkworth famliy for him.

Thanks so much for the extra info on Joseph Brinkworth, that was also a dead end for me . . . my understanding was that Walter is a Kirkland . . . at least that's how he was presented to me as a child, and in some of the records that i've found on him . . . I do remember Walter coming to Grandma Freda Bishop's house quite often. . . .

LOL yes, my Dad did have that "Mr Whiffle" look occasionally . . . He would be thrilled to know that i am doing the family genealogy/history. Its something he'd always wanted to do and had never found the time.
Yes, this is the same Clara Brinkworth . . but they had more than one child . . Harry and Clara actually had my Grandmother Freda and her brother Walter too.

And no, my Dad was Arnold "Sonny" Bishop Jr. He was Freda Hildred Brinkworth Kirkland's son. You will find mention of Freda and Clara Brinkworth at the home for Women and Children, in Portland ME in the 1910 census. So I know that Clara and Harry (Frederick?) were split up by then. You will also find Walter in there too, at a later date, sorry don't have all my info in front of me since i've been working on this for so many years, I can remember most of where they were then. If you need real dates etc. for the connection, if there is one, please let me know. I"ll be happy to provide them for you . . .

I'm trying to figure out where the Frederick on the marriage record came from. Could he have lied about his name?

My father is the youngest son of Maynard and Clara. Dad doesn't remember his mother's first husband, as he was out of the picture long before Dad was born. Noboby in the family ever mentioned his name. Clara had about 13 children. Bob or Walter was the oldest boy and Dad was the youngest boy. Dad remembers his Uncle Joe Brinkworth. He was a big, tall man. Sort of,a gentle giant. His father, Joseph, was born in Gloucestershire, England in 1864. I am looking for Clara and Joe's grandfather, Frederick Brinkworth. I know he was born in 1832 in Eng. and died at an early age, as his wife,Sarah, was a widow in 1881. I can not find the year he died. Anyway, Dad does remember your Dad, Sonny. He says they used to call him "Mr. Whiffle", as in "don't squeese the Charmin".

Wow! Thank you sooo much for this reply, I've hit such dead ends here . . .

My Grandmother was Freda Hildred Kirkland, the daughter of Clara Brinkworth and ? Kirkland. Its Freda's father that has me stumped. I've been trying to figure out who he is or where he went. What happened between Clara and he.

I was able to get someone from our family on the phone years ago, can't remember who right now, sorry, but the minute i brought up the subject of Clara's first marriage, they basically decided not to talk with me again . . .

My problem with him is that their marriage record lists his name as Frederick H. Kirkland, and he lists his father as James F. Kirkland, a cabinet maker. He was also significantly older than she. Now the family of James F. Kirland has been well published, and nowhere do i find a Frederick Kirkland. Also, Freda, obviously named after her father, lists her father's first name as Harry. I have found a Henry Kirkland, but researchers of that line know nothing of a Frederick or a Harry marrying a Clara Brinkworth.

So, this is where I'm stuck. It will be very easy to go back from James F. Kirkland, since there are many records on file about him. Any family stories that you could remember or relatives you could refer me to would be so appreciated.

Just thinking, you may have known my Grandmother Freda or my Dad, Arnold "Sonny" Bishop Jr.

I'm researching her kin here in England, and wondered whether any of you have come across Joseph Brinkworth, Innkeeper of Slade Road, Stroud in the 1881 Census? Can't seem to get any further back than him. Cheers

Hi Thanks for reply. As far as I have discovered Thomas Brinkworth lived in Frampton on Severn before moving to Clifton/Bristol early 19thCentury. Two of his sons were Thomas and Samuel born c 1827. There may be a connection but not sure as there were other parts of the Brinkworth family from the Horsley area that I have not found any link to yet.

Happy hunting.

Ray

thank you for getting back to me so soon. while the infomation you gave me was interseting it was of no help. I do have a Thomas in the family from horsely, buy his wife was Sarah Coutle. it seems strang that we could not be related some how because of the brinkworth line being so strong in Horsely. take care and good luck in your quest...

Sincerly Leta (LEE)
