There are several online trees for this family, including (for instance) this one:

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

They trace the family back to Membury Parish, Devonshire, England.

I need to consult my notes (packed in a box, as we're in the process of moving), but a common error is to assign to "our" John Brinson the children of his cousin John Brinson (they were both born in Kentucky and lived near each other in Indiana), combining the two families into one, and the error is pervasive in the online trees. But they all trace back to Zebulon Brinson, son of Barefoot Brinson. Love the names!

I don't have a photograph, but am descended from their grandson William Taylor Burton, son of John M. Burton and Catharine Brinson.

Mom has a receipt for taxes that John Brinson paid in 1862 in Madison County, Iowa. You can see a copy here:

http://www.mtpinos.com/karen/zigler/john_brinson_tax.jpg

Not a photograph of him, but kind of neat, anyhow?

Karen

(Apparently I can also attach it, so I'm trying that.)

I am seeking descendents of this couple for two reasons. (1) Does anyone have a photo of either? (2) I am a believer in family traditions that are passed on down. I am most curious if any of you were told by your parents or grandparents which country that our Brinson line originated from in Europe? We have a tradition in our branch of the family naming a specific country, but I do not know if the tradition actually applies to Brinson or to a line which married into the Brinsons.

Well, then this would seem to throw doubt on the genealogies posted online which claim that John Brinson (b. KY 4-25-1800 to 1-29-1881 in Winterset, IA) was a son of Zebulon Brinson (b. 1771 in Princess Anne, VA and d. April 20, 1851 in Switzerland, IN)....

Here is a cousin for you, Judy. I have been wondering about Art myself, lately. We corresponded 20-25 years ago and he even came and visited my folks and me once. It looks like we are 3rd cousins. My great grandmother was a sister to your great grandfather. I have a few family photos, of which I am guessing came from Art Brinson, but I am not certain. One is of our great-great grandparents. Another is of them with all ten children and a third is of your great grandfather and his 5 brothers.
Please email me at jhalterman36@comcast.net

Franklin Pierce Brinson was the postmaster for Duncansby, Mississippi from 1897-1905. His wife, Elizabeth Cosby Brinson taught school. I am looking for any Mississippi or Louisiana relatives as well as any one who has information about the family. Franklin Pierce's Brinson's parents were living in Ohio during that period. Their names were James Frank Brinson and Louisa M. Galloway Brinson.

Hi Jackie, here is the photo. Its the only one I have of the Brinson side of my family tree. Samuel Brinson (sr.), brother of Joseph and Henry is front and centre. On each side of Samuel are his daughters - Mary on his right (she married George Goodyear) and on his left - Sara-Jane (she married a Henry Harbin). This photo was taken in 1908. The little boy seated on the stool is Elmo Brinson, son of Samuel Jr and Mary-Ann (Day). Mary-Ann is standing behind Samuel Sr. I do have in my notes who the oter lady standing to the right and the two boys are but just can't find it at the moment.

I'd be interested in any information that you might have on any of the three original brothers. I have lately been trying to trace them through various records from the south of England, around Poole and other areas as it seems likely that is where they came from. Any info or family lore that you might have in that regard would be much appreciated.

Gary

Heck, that just about nails it.
Our boy went to Texas after the war.

That's about as good a circumstantial evidence as we could ask for. Almost and MD with the ANV,, and enumerated as a bonafide MD in Texas.

Do you know where his death date was documented? A family bible maybe?

Any clues, or guesses, where he's buried?

Mary, do you have his CSA records on you hard drive, and if so, can you share and email the images for my family records?
jlstevens1@comcast.net

I have a copy of Calvin's medical record from Spottsylvania. His wounds were treated with cold water dressings. The tthing hat surprised me was that he was considered to be a physician. I believe this could be him.
Mary

Thanks Mary,

I guess the question now, for me anyway, did Calvin die "in" the war from injuries,, or did he die a few years later, after the war due to wounds. I have in my records he was wounded Spotsylvania in 1864, captured and exchanged all within a few months.

I just got to thinking, C G Brinson in Texas fits the description perfectly,, name, age, birth state.

Surmise,,
Alfred and Martha, or at least Alfred and the kids, did in fact move to Texas after the war, I wonder if Calvin survived serious wounds from the war made the move to Texas with them. Their father George also died 1866.

Maybe a stretch but Calvin could have learned the medical profession during the war. A civil war hospital would be the ideal place for OJT if one had to be there anyway (from wounds) and maybe had the desire and a knack to learn and practice medicine.

I notice others online show Calvin dieing in Jasper County. Is that documented, bible record maybe, or an assumption?

Or is his death day of 12/19/1872 being well documented? A definite date of Dec 19th sounds like a bible record, mortality schedule, tombstone, etc.

Also where buried, MS or TX. If he died in TX, with railroads,,, a stretch but his remains could have been returned home to be buried in Jasper County, possible but not probable.

Just wondering about Cousin Calvin, seems like he sorta got a raw deal and fell through the cracks even after all he had done and gone through for the CSA. Then losing his father George 1866.

jerry

Allow me to check deeper and I will get back with you.

Mary Guy
cmguy@bellsouth.net
