There was an Arthur James Brisbane who was from Waseca, Minnesota. Born 20 Nov 1883; died in Northfield, Minnesota 3 May 1971. He had a son Bruce James Brisbane who I believe died in Los Angeles 28 Jul 1980. There were two children: Lonnie and Ruth.

He was a distant cousin, but I don't know any of the family.

One suggestion would be to contact the Waseca county historical society to see if they're interested in the photos. Their website is: http://www.historical.waseca.mn.us.
They do a wonderful job with their family history research center, esp. for a small county society.

good luck,
Laurie
(maybe by now you've done something else with the photos)

hi charles: Great to read your response.....incidentally Charles is also my father's name. I called him to get some update on the family tree and this is what he told me. There was an Arthur Brisbane somewhere in the states who was a renowned Journalist. My grandfathers father was named James Brisbane. Also there was a Thomas Brisbanewho was governor general of Australia who had a brother named Charles who was governor of St.Vincent. Incidentally my father was born in St.Vincent in the Caribbean where it seems is the source where most of the Caribbean Brisbanes come from. I hope I got this info. correct as I jotted down notes as my dad spoke to me. He has done quite a bit of work tracing our ancestry.

Hi, Margot

Thanks for your greetings.

The "Carribean" covers quite a lot of land (and water) so this is a long shot indeed. But .... did you ever come across James Brisbane who (according, I think, to someone's inherited information) died 26 Feb 1794 at Nassau, Bahamas? He was born 1734 or 1735 (or thereabouts) in Charleston, South Carolina, but had to relocate after a succession of unpleasantnesses during which he and his fellow Charleston Land-owners found themselves obliged to decide whether they were American or British. With the benefit of hindsight, it's beginning to look as though our James might have backed the side that came second.

Incidentally, he had several marriages, I think. I descend from his marriage to Sarah Stanyarne (1738 - 1776: dates approximate) but I've no reason to think she ever moved away from South Carolina.

Anyhow, thanks for any thoughts you may have on this and I wish you success with your researches.

Charles Hillman

I mess around with research on the Brisbin family every now and then. My family is traceable back to Robert Brisbin of Platsburg NY. None of us have seemed to get past him because his parents seem unidentifiable. It appears that 1) his father may have died and while he kept the family name, his mother remarried and we have a name change and a death we are not aware of. 2) He left home and became an apprintice in some other home and what few things we have about him don't include any family reference. I suspect that the second is true and that he grew up in the home of Phoby Call's parents as an apprintice to them and later married Phoby. Or he may have even indentured to them though the practice had pretty well died out by them.
If I can be a help on any specific problen after Robert, I may be able to help you.

Re: hello to all the Brisbane families

'My' Brisbanes turned up from Glasgow area, Scotland, in Charleston area, SC, probably in the 1730s. I tend to agree that there is likely - not certain but likely - to be some sort of a connection with Brisbanes in NC. I'm not up to speed with an NC branch of Brisbanes, but it is, as you write, entirely believable that an NC branch would be linked to an SC one. Even world wide, I think most or all Brisbanes track back to Glasgow if you can find the links. After the Civil War (1860s) SC Brisbanes tended to scatter across the Union, so that I think most of he Brisbanes left in the area today (2010) are slave descendants plus (confusingly, but it seems to have happened...) descendants of other slaves who, when asked, gave their name as Brisbane because of publicity given in the area to William Henry Brisbane's unforced (he converted to abolitionism in the 1830s) release of his slaves (not universally popular with his pink skinned kinsfolk) especially (as far as I remember) in the late 1840s. Anyhow, please take a look at my data and see if you spot any connection to 'your' NC Brisbanes. I'd be very interested to learn more if you spot a link.

http://www.hillmanc.fsnet.co.uk/brisbane.htm

and I wish you success with your researches.

Regards

Charles

Do you have any record of his dates? Even if you do not have a record of his birth date, if someone wrote down his age at death, that would give an approximate birth date.

Do you known when he relocated to SC?

Do you know which Carribean Island(s)?

If you can pin down some of those details, it is much easier for someone wondering whether or not they are related to Moses B to work out whether (or not) their information relates to the same man or merely to a different man with the same name....

Success

Charles

Brisbane sisters photo

Attached is a photo that I came across recently of some of the Brisbane sisters: #2 (from left) in the photo is Hannah Brisbane Root, and I believe #5 is Helen (Nellie) Brisbane Weed, both daughters of William Brisbane and Janet Scott. There were seven sisters in all, one of whom died young (Mary). The others are Isabel Fuller Brisbane Kellogg, Catherine Brisbane Rector, Janet Brisbane (unmarried), and Margaret C. (Maggie) Brisbane Turnacliff.

Can any of you identify who is who in this photo? It also may be possible that the seated woman in the middle (#3) is their mother Janet Scott Brisbane. The two oldest sisters, Isabel and Catherine were married and living in Iowa and Wisconsin, respectively, while the rest of the family remained in Minnesota, which might explain the make-up of this portrait.

thanks for any help identifying these women,
Laurie

Hi, My family of Brisbane's (Father, granfather) came from Glasgow around 1956 (ish) but all their prior family came form St Ninians. I've gone back to 1800 but have hit a block before that (No census records :( ). I've a history of the eldest child being called Alexander of William Stewart for at least the last 6 generations. I've found two records of Brisbane's marrying into the Stewart clan, but have yet to find the William Stewart that is being referred to.

History has it that Robert the Bruce's second granddaughter married a William Brisbane, making those of that line royalty(!) but I dont know if anyone has a history of descendants of that line (a secret one since the English would have liked to wipe them out...)

Does anyone have a history of Brisbane's prior to 1800/1810 and/or a list of Stewarts of the same?

I am a writer for the Lake Champlain Weekly, which covers the history of the border areas of NY, VT and SW Quebec. I'm researching a story about Effie Brisbin. During the War of 1812, her mother was carrying her on her back, fleeing invading American soldiers, who mistook her for a squaw, shot at her and wounded Effie. Remorseful, they dressed her wound, and send yearly attonements of flour and pork to their Lacolle, Qc farm thereafter (even after they moved). The customs peristed into the eary 20th century. I'm wondering if you have any info on this. Effie supposedly died in the late 1800s with the bullet still lodged in her right side.

I've seen other sources (1871 Durham Co. census) that state that Mary (??) was Joseph Brisbin's first wife (10 children), and that Rachel Lindsay was the second wife (1 child). Confusing.

I'm fascinated about the albino brothers. Do you know their names?

regards,
Robert Pelltier
LCW

William Brisbane-Janet Scott

I'm looking for connections to my Brisbane line. Here are the details:

William Brisbane was born 11 Dec 1811 in Rutherglen parish, Lanarkshire (Glasgow) to James Brisbane and Mary Sinclair. Mary's family was from Hawick, and William spent time there with his mother and her family while his father was in the military (was at the Battle of Waterloo). He met and married Janet Scott (born 10 Sep 1810), (daughter of Alexander Scott and Isabelle Forter (maybe Fowles), of Minto, Roxburghshire) on 20 Jan 1832 in nearby Ancrum.

Their first five children were born in Scotland. They emigrated in the spring of 1839, first to Andes, Delaware County, New York, where four more children were born. Brisbane was active in the anti-rent movement, culminating in being indicted for murder (which he did not commit!). After his release from jail, the family moved (in 1849) to Alto, Fond du Lac Co., Wisconsin, and the last three children were born. In the spring of 1859, the family moved to Wilton Township, Waseca County, Minnesota, where he was an early pioneer and highly respected in the community. He twice represented Waseca county in the Minnesota State Legislature. He died 23 Jul 1890.

William and Janet's children:

Isabel Fuller, b. 5 Jan 1833; d. ? bef 1928 (m. Silas Kellogg)
Catherine, b. 26 Oct 1834; d. ? bef 1928 (m. Alemore? Rector)
Helen (Nellie), b. 21 Jun 1836; d. 2 Nov 1900 (m. Benjamin F. Weed)
James, b. 22 Jun 1838; d. 18 Sep 1912 (m. Amelia)
Hannah, b. 18 Aug 1840; d. 24 oct 1919 (m. James A. Root) - these are my great, great grandparents
Janet, b. 5 May 1842; d. 10 Sep 1889 (unmarried)
Alexander, b. 6 Mar 1844; d. 1 Sep 1928 (m. Emma Mane; 2nd m. Alice Lashelle/Goodsell?)
William Robert, b. 5 Jun 1845; d. 14 Sep 1921(m. Margaret Penny)
Margaret, b. 12 Dec 1847; d. 27 Jul 1913 (m. Delavan Turnacliff)
Mary, b. 14 May 1849; d. 10 Feb. 1850
John Young, b. 29 Jan 1850; d. 12 Jul 1922 (m. Rosena Glendening; 2nd m. Ida Schiefner)
Thomas, b. 26 Jul 1853; d. 18 Nov 1923 (m. Margaret Swift)

William had a brother Robert who also emigrated to New York (same area), and his family remained there. There are still descendents living there, some of whom have been in contact with members of my family. Unconfirmed are another brother James, who may have been a doctor in London, and a sister Mary or Margaret, who stayed in Scotland.
My great-grandfather, Philip FRANCIS, 1853-1946, wrote an autobiography late in life. Two years of his life were spent prospecting in Leadville, Lake County, CO around 1878-1880. He wrote about his first partner there, who he said was Frank BRISBANE, who had a wife and 2 children in Saginaw, MI (but who may never have returned to them). He wrote the following about Frank's father, "His father, Gen. BRISBANE, took position hunting Indians for the U. S. Government who were implicated in Gen. Custer's massacre". In searching the 1880 Leadville census, I found a W. H. BRISBANE, age 28, b. PA, father b. NJ, mother b. DE. I was wondering if this W. H. BRISBANE was the same person as the Frank BRISBANE from the book. I noticed your post on a W. H. BRISBANE and thought I'd see if there was a connection. Does any of this sound familiar?

Bailey Francis
bfran02@learnlink.emory.edu

Hi Dave, I am a descendent of James Brisbin and Margaret Carruth, thru their daughter Mary Brisbin who married Augustus Seeley. I found an interesting site devoted to the Brisbin family and wonder if you have seen this one
:http://www.rootsweb.com/~daisy/brisbin.htm
Look at the link where it says Brisbin 10 Generations.
I printed it out so I could have a reference to show my immediate family. But the author of this web page has Robert Brisbane's wife's name as Jane Steward. I'm sure she is the same woman you were referring to in your interesting people page or one of your pages. Let me know what you think, thanks - Sheila Labbe

I have some information on the Brisbin line named. I descend from Effie's sister, Harriette Brisbin, who married Sylvanus Barney. I have that Effie was born 30 Jun 1806, twin of Richard, children of Joseph Brisbin and Rachel Lindsay. I have a book on Lindsay Genealogy over a hundred years old that names the children but has all the birthdates wrong. I have that Effie died 30Aug1894 m. Thomas Jardine who d.16Sep1895? The history of the family is very interesting. Josephs father William was supposed to be a Loyalist, who was jailed in 1779 in the US. He escaped into Canada where the family eventually ended up seeking support from the Government. William had seven sons by his second wife, Elizabeth Ferguson, the oldest was crippled. Another story about the family states that two Brisbins brothers said to be albinos travelled with Barnum & Bailey circus.
