Hello.
I've run into this family researching my own family and found the following book reference: Colonial Virginians and their Maryland relatives by Norma Tucker.

In this book, on page 87, Ms Tucker describes part of the Briscoe family as they pertain to the Tuckers.

She lists James Montgomery Briscoe as the father of the following:
Mason (who married Mary Wade)
Andrew
John
Margaret
Elizabeth
Samuel Montgomery (who married Elizabeth Barnes)
Emily Elliott (who married George Briscoe)
William P
Clarissa Jane (who married Henry Faulk Shaifer).

She shows James Montgomery Briscoe as being the son of Capt William Briscoe and his wife, Elizabeth Wallace. And, Capt William as being the son of Robert Briscoe.

Albert H Briscoe...was my step grandfather. Evelyn his wife had one daughter (Gladyce) from previous marriage. they did not have any children between them. She is my mother who is still alive at the age of 90. Hap was a Captain in the US ARMY, during WW11. He was also one of the first officers in the Oklahoma Highway Patrol when it was first organized. He also played minor league baseball from 1920-1932 on several teams. I have a wristwatch he was given for two homeruns in one game, it is engraved with his name. They are both buried in the Sedgwick cemetary close to my father.

National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol. 21, September 1933 (which makes the claim) and National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol. 46, March 1958 which repudiates it.

The so-called invitation by Lord Baltimore to Dr. John Briscoe was falsified. Further, from what I found some members from one branch of the family, with the help of a genealogist, had taken the records of a man named John Biscoe, an early settler of St. Mary's County, and made him Dr. John Briscoe. I provided all of this information to the Society of the Ark and Dove.

If you want a copy of the articles, you will have to contact me privately at lindareno@comcast.net

The first article is 4 pages and the second is 8.

I corresponded with Carol Mitchell for many years.
Philip and Sarah Jones Briscoe, Walton Co., GA, USA

An interesting story regarding the parents of Philip Darling Briscoe (husband of Frances A. Brown Briscoe) from Walton Co., GA, born and died in the 1800's: His parents were Philip and Sarah Jones Briscoe, also from Walton Co. A few years ago my cousin Jim Briscoe, also from Walton Co., noticed a subdivision being built near his home by a local attorney and approached him with the info that Philip and Sarah Jones Briscoe were buried in the area where the construction was occurring. He remembered his father telling him that when he was a child. The attorney had the place inspected and it was found that several graves were indeed located. (By x-ray or rodding, I'm not sure.) The attorney roped off the area and Jim is presently trying to have a stone erected with the little money that he has been able to collect from the family. I have visited this site. If anyone wants to visit the site, it is in Walton Co., GA, USA, in the Jefferson Plantation subdivision, off of U.S. Highway 78 West. June in GA

I am from the Phillip/Susanna line, according to my records. There are a lot of men named Phillip or Philip in my ancestry, one of which was my great-grandfather from Walton Co., GA. He is buried in the community where I grew up.

Thanks for your info. June

Carol was right, there was no Dr. John Briscoe who came on the Ark or Dove. That has been thoroughly disproven and the Society of the Ark and Dove no longer accepts applicants making that claim.

Philip Briscoe (1645-1724) was the immigrant ancestor. He was in Maryland prior to 1677. He lived in St. Mary's County and then in neighboring Charles County. His wife was Susanna Swann. They are probably the ancestors of most of the people on this list. I descend from them twice via their daughter Ann Briscoe who married first, John Davis and second, Samuel Wood.

Unfortunately his origins, at least at this point, are not known.

The only way to be sure is to trace backwards through the generations. You have to be very careful of people in the past who have started with someone famous and then proved descent from them by making a few convenient assumptions (or guesses!).

There was a good example on TV here just before Christmas, BBC Wales does an excellent series of their own (Coming Home) that is very similar to the Who Do You Think You Are series. The subject of the programme had a tree that an uncle had done some years ago and it showed descent from the Scottish Lyle family (Tate & Lyle sugar empire). This seemed strange for a Welsh family and was shown to be all down to a name that had been misread on a document though it was still a very interesting tree.

MB

Thank you all for these posts. Quite interesting. The info I have from my ancestry is that the Briscoes who came to the US were from a Dr. John Briscoe who came with Calvert on the Ark and the Dove expedition. That is what is passed down for generations. Several years ago, however, there was a lady, Carol Mitchell, on here (now deceased) who vehemently denied this. I still don't know the truth, but the Cumberland and Crofton Hall info sounds familiar. There was an ancestor, Robert Brisko, among those tales. Does any of this ring true with any of you regarding my info and yours posted here? Thanks. June Briscoe Anderson, GA

Nothing in that line though one did have a music shop for a short time.

Earliest is a weaver which is typical of the area, followed by a couple of generations of hairdressers.
The village is actually called "Brisco"

I presume you mean "all Briscoes come from the village of Brisco" and not "all villagers"?

Not so sure about this, there are quite a lot of Brisco(e) in Cumberland but also clusters of them in different parts of the country as well as some in Ireland. Some of these clusters go back quite a way and start off with various spellings in the 18th Century which then tend to usually standardise on Briscoe.

My own family is from Bolton, my first definite ancestor married in the 1770s though then spelt "Briskowe". I can see others in the same general area earlier in 18th Century but not been able to link them up to mine.
Then to add confusion there was the Rev Michael Briscoe from Ireland in the area in the 17th Century before moving to Toxteth Chapel, I am fairly sure he did not leave any male offspring behind.

There is nothing to suggest any link to Cumberland, the Cumberland families must have been very active and mobile in the 18th Century and earlier if all the clusters around England and Wales link to them. Completely coincidentally one of the Crofton Hall BRISCO did marry in Bolton in the mid 19th Century and at a church where one of my family was church warden, this confused me for a bit but he married a woman from Cumberland who had been orphaned so moved to live with her sister who was married to someone in Bolton.

I took an Ancestry DNA test hoping that I might be able eliminate any connection to Cumberland but all that I can say is that I have not found any close matches. There is a tendency for some of our Transpondian cousins to all claim relationship to the Crofton Hall Briscoe because they have a title!

Martin Briscoe
Fort William
M&LFHS / Gwynedd FHS
My grandfather, Samuel Mason Briscoe (1883-1956), raised his family in Trinity, Trinity Co., TX. This is in East Texas and is north of Houston. The first Briscoe in my direct line to come to Texas was his grandfather, James Montgomery Briscoe (1813-1852). He arrived from MS and settled in Fort Bend Co., TX, in 1840. This area is near Houston. Briscoe County in TX is named for Andrew Briscoe (older brother of James Montgomery Briscoe). Andrew was a hero of the Battle of San Jacinto.

You can see more about my Briscoe line if you go to ancestry.com and view the Cyrus Family Tree. It is public access. I hope this info helps your search.
Cinda Cyrus

For many years, I've worked on putting together a complete descendancy of this family; that is, all the descendants of Charles' siblings. I do have your grandmother, Edith Moss in my database (m. to Dwain Robinson), and her siblings, as well, but spouses only for Edith, Katie and Mary. Would love to have more, if you'd care to share. Feel free to e-mail me privately (autick@mt.net), if you wish. I'll look forward to hearing from you, and would love to hear more about Daniel and Kathryn, et al.

A. Utick
I am the GG granddaughter of Daniel Briscoe. My Grandma (Edith Robinson) still lives on the homestead property today. Actually, our family owns John Ware (Kathryns dad) land and homestead from 1895. I don't have a lot on things before Daniel but most things there after I can give a lot of info on. Belmar Fouts's children live in close and still living as well as my grandmother and great aunt who have memories of Daniel, Kathyrn, her sisters and the family. I'm very interested in the lineage/ancestry of our family and would like to campare information.
