Hi we are still Quakers ,having researched our family I found out we used to be Quakers, following this information
I traced us back to Wooldale near Holmfirth Yorkshire.
On visiting to gain more information i eventually joined them taking our family back 300 years and once again we had a Broadhead in their midst. Robert Broadhead gave the Quakers land to bury their dead and money to build a meeting
house. If you are interested a book has been written about
the Quaker Broadheads Fine Country Friends author David Bower in it is a great amount of information.
Regards Allan Broadhead

Hi,
No my william was deceased cutler and not the usa one. I think perhaps got the johns mixed up. My ancester is Sabina, daughter of william and emma and born just the year before william died. There was a John, william jr and alice on the 1861 census but cant find John after, maybe he was in an apprenticeship somewhere by 1871 as he would have been about 15?
Regards, Di

Hi Gaynor,
Don't think our trees match. Mine isn't posted on Ancestry yet. My William Broadhead was born in Sheffield ( Eccleshall abt.1816 ) He was married to Mary Jane Wilgos . He was a saw grinder as well as a publican. He was also the Secretary to the Saw Grinders Union and became notorious for his part in the "rattening " activities which became the subject of an official enquiry.
Good hunting
Ann Sanderson

The william you found from c1851 is the son of the william that was married to Ann as his first wife. She died quite young I think they had 1 or 2 children but my family descends from wm senior and emma ingham. They had several children but i cant find a marriage. She did call herself broadhead however and her children were broadheads. She continued tio run his cutlery business after his death.

I have just seen your message.
I think that we might be looking at the same family.
My William Broadhead b.abt1818 in Sheffield was a Cutler.
He appears in the 1861 census together with a Boarder named Emma Ingham. She had three children William b1851, John b1856 and Alice b.1860.
I have discovered that both William and John had Broadhead as their middle name.
The birth record for John (1st Quarter 1856) is written down as John Broadhead Ingham.
The following census' show either William and Emma as still living together, the 1891 and 1901, although William died in 1879? She and her remaining children are calling themselves Broadhead.
I hope to hear from you.
My e-mail address is, fandf.mac@tiscali.co.uk.

Hi. I have been researching the Broadhead family in the Huddersfield area for years. My records do not have a William H Broadhead born anytime between 1870-1880 in this area. This is also bourne out by the civil registrations for the time, again no registration of a William H. There is a William A Broadhead registered in 1877, in Huddersfield. There are also a couple of just plain Williams registered. What is your information source?
My Broadhead database contains 1400+ entries for those born local to the Huddersfield area, so I may still be able to help.
Regards
Steve

I am looking for descendants of William H BROADHEAD b Huddersfied, Yorkshire, England abt 1875. He married Frances T O’CONNELL (also known as Fannie Thressa O’CONNELL) in 1904 in Monson, Hampden, Massachusetts, USA.
-----
William and Frances had a son, Walter BROADHEAD (1909 Connecticut -1952 North Carolina). I don’t know if they had other children, or if Walter married.
-----
Going back to Walter’s parents, William BROADHEAD was the son of Benjamin BROADHEAD and Mary HOLLINGWORTH.
-----
Frances O’CONNELL was born in 1880 in Hampden, Massachusetts and was the daughter of Eugene O’CONNELL (or O'CONNOR) and Maria DUNLEA/DONLEE (her name is also spelled DONLEA, DONLER and DONTEL, depending on the record!)
Dear Lindsay..have just read your email of information from the Church Building Manager at Eccleshall. I am certain that William is my 3x Gt.grandfather as Thomas Wilgos Broadhead is his son (1851census although aged only 10).The deaths of William and Mary Jane are correct as well. Our email address has changed...bsanderson246@btinternet.com...I hope you haven't tried to use the old one and thinking lack of response meant I wasn't interested . I'm afraid I let genealogy rest during the summer months.
I have just discovered William's son ,Joseph, (my gt.gt.grandfather) was an inmate at South Yorkshire Asylum ( Middlewood Hospital) from 1901 until his death in 1907.Poor soul.I have also found some very comprehensive references to the Sheffield Outrages and William's part therein from the Sheffield Archives.Any further deatils you are prepared to share would be most helpful.Thank you,Ann

Hello Lindsay, William Broadhead (b. abt. 1816) was my Gt.gt. Grandfather. With all his faults and failings. I have two extracts from newspapers regarding the Sheffieid Outrages. William was one of the first into the witness box to claim immunity !!!Have you read "Put Yourself in His Place " by Charles Reade ? I believe it gives a good account of the prevailing conditions , albeit in novel form.
I would also suggest that the name Wilgos /r has been mis- read on various census transcriptions.
annthegran

Dear Karl

Thank you for your email, Yes I believe the church is Ecclesall church Ringinlow road at Ecclesall. I have had some correspondance with the church warden who was very helpful he sent me the following email which you may find interesting, I would suggest you contact him if you would like to get further information.
I think the Martha and Joseph mentioned could be Williams parents.

Dear Lindsay

William Broadhead was indeed interred in our churchyard in March 1879 aged 63. I have yet to locate the grave - it is a very large churchyard and some old sections, as this is, have limited records – but I will pursue this and be in touch again. In the meantime our records suggest that the following may be buried with or close to him:

Martha Broadhead died (or buried) 02 Jan 1844 aged 57
Joseph Broadhead “ 29 Nov 1845 aged 52 (husband of above)
Thos. Wilgor Broadhead “ 25 Apr. 1857 aged 26 (grandson of above)
Mary Jane Broadhead “ 12 Dec. 1893 aged 73

I trust that this is of interest.

Regards

Roger Carroll
Church Building Manager

The church can be contacted at the following email address
Cbm@ecclesall.parishchurch.org.uk

Good luck

Don't think I have burial references for William and Mary Jane (Wilgos ) but on 1841 census Thomas Broadhead (45) with Allis (20) is living in Garden Street, On the next page (page6)William (25)plus Mary Jane and family are all listed as living in Garden street and it looks like a continuation of the family. Hope this may be of help. You can email me at bsanderson246@btinternet.com. William was my Gt.gt grandfather.
annthegran

Hi, I have noticed your post about William Broadhead & wife Mary Jane Wilgos being buried at All Saints Church, Rivelin Road in Sheffield. I am presently trying to prove the connection between my own family of Broadheads from Sheffield to William (as I am told there is one!). But problem is that there isn't an All Saints Church on Rivelin Road or indeed Rivelin Valley Road. Could it be All Saints on Ringinglow Road, Ecclesall??? Hope you are able to help me with this and if anyone finds William's parents, please let me know at karl.fretwell@gmail.com
Many thanks, Karl

Hi,
Not sure whether it was me or not? But if you view the 1851 census, Mary Jane's unmarried sister has the surname of Wilgos... hence the connection.

Re: George W Broadhead and Martha Armstrong

Thought I should update for those reading these posts. Adele Simpson has done some great research and posted it on GenForum regarding Martha Armstrong. According to family documents, Martha was an orphan and was taken in by "Judge Waldrop". A census record in 1870 shows a M Armstrong of Martha's age living with the Waldrop's. The following research was posted to GenForum Dec. 2010 by Adelle Simpson: Henry Armstrong and Elizabeth S Peterson were married 9/14/1847 in Jefferson Co AL. Henry was the son of Robert and Priscilla Dennis Armstrong. Elizabeth S was the daughter of James and UKN Peterson. They appear on the 1850 Jefferson Co AL census with daughter Sarah E (1). They appear on the 1860 Madison Co MS census with Sarah E (12), James (8), Martha A (6) and Melinda V (1) with all born in AL. Henry returned with his family to Jefferson Co AL where he enlisted on 7/29/1861 in 18th AL Infantry in the Civil War. He was captured and sent to Rock Island IL where he died 8/22/1864. Elizabeth S died between his death and mid-1865 when the Jefferson Co AL Probate Court began handling the case of the 4 Armstrong children as heir's to their grandfather James Peterson who had left them land and assets in his will of 1859 which was proven 1/30/1860 by A J Waldrop. Waldrop had apparantly not distributed James Peterson's assets during the 5 years between Jan 1860 and mid-1865. The probate records for the Armstrong children indicate that Judge Waldrop took Martha A Armstrong into his home and allowed others to have guardianship of Sarah E, James and Melinda Viola. The records indicate the guardians gave the children to other people and paid a pittance for the children's upkeep. In 1870, Martha A appears in Jefferson Co AL with A J Waldrop. James and Melinda Viola appear in Hale Co AL with W G and Renphena Sadler. Sarah Elizabeth had aged out of the court's control and was living with an uncle Tillman Miles in Bibb Co AL. Sarah Elizabeth Armstrong married James G Harris and he applied for custody of Martha A (17)and Melinda Viola (14) in 1874. The probate papers show that the Peterson property had been paying the Probate Court large amounts since 1865 but none ever got to the children. When James G Harris was given custody of Martha and Viola he asked for control of the property but Judge Waldrop ordered that he and the guardians would buy the property and pay the children over time. There is no evidence that any money was ever paid for the property. Martha A married George W Broadhead on 11/15/1877 in Shelby Co AL. Melinda Viola married John Belton Broadhead (George W's nephew) in 1878. Is there a formal record of Melinda Viola's marriage to John Belton Broadhead? I have not found one in either Bibb Co or Shelby Co AL
Edit Delete

Hi Andy.
A couple of other possiblities you may wish to persue. There is a John Broadhead registered in Huddersfield Q4 1854, I have details of a siblings baptism, but not his. Could this be because the family moved to Sheffield shortly after his birth?. It is also possible that he was not baptised as a child. However, to marry in the Church of England he would have to be baptised, so if you have the date of his first marriage, check that church and time for an adult baptisms. I hope this may be of use.

Steve (a fellow Broadhead researcher from West Yorkshire)

Does anyone know why the grave of Henry Broadhead reads Rear Admiral. On 1 August 1877 the below website says he was Retired Admiral and for years before that Vice Admiral and before that Rear Admiral.

(http://www.pdavis.nl/ShowBiog.php?id=297) He was the sixth son of Thomas Henry Broadhead, MP for Wareham and later Yarmouth. Born 25 April 1806 died 20 March 1878 at Walton-on-Thames, buried with an expensive cross grave at southernmost row of the Cemetery. His grave death date is also clearly shown 20 March 1878.
Have you found the certificate for the marriage you know of? Start there and keep going back to it. I have a "broadhead mystery" as well. And, it regards a john broadhead. Mine I have lost track of after the 1901 census, basically. His wife left with half the kids in 1909 for Canada. Just up and left. SHe was a bit of a woman's rights type for the time. Then John Broadhead (1859) goes missing. He was born in birmingham, father is thomas broadhead. Maybe it's the same guy?

Beverly - I have no idea where that poster got that name. In all of my years of research, I have not found a name for the wife of James Broadhead of Edgefield Co., S.C. in any court paper, Bible pages, etc. She was evidently deceased when he made his will she was not mentioned and when he died the Orphans Court was brought in because of his underage children. I know that you have done research on this family for years, as have I. If someone will show me the documented evidence I will consider it. There is nothing in the Probate Court in Edgefield Co., S.C. with any evidence. I've been to Edgefield Co., S. C. Probate Office and the genealogy library there and to Bibb Co., Al. (and their library) and to Chilton Co., Ala. and their local library.
Re: Stephen Broadhead early life??

Canisteo was surely Indian country. If you check out my file on Rootsweb, (Sarah 60191) look for a John Jamison who was one of the original settlers in Canisteo. However, probably by 1840 when the Costons arrived fron central NYS, there were not too many Indians left. But something did occur to me--Lorinda's grandfather-- Ebenezer Coston, reportedly had black hair and flashing black eyes. This came from some remarks filtering through a Skinner descendent. I was intrigued by this (being a Coston descendent) but the genesis of this branch of Coston's is elusive. It is also possible, since Shropshire is the known home of Coston's that there is spanish blood there since it borders on Wales. Another theory is possibly French as the name DeCoston has cropped up in researching family history. It appears Broadhead is an English name, so one could assume they might have the same influences as the Costons. The Living sign in Canisteo was designed and planted by another relative- Harry Coleman Smith.

How is your aunt related to the Broadheads?? Can you add anything to hwat I already have in mt tree??
Sabra154@yahoo.com

No you are the first responce. This is my Aunts line, she is the one who believes there is a Native American influence. I have not found a real connection. Yor refrence to John GOFF Coston, is that Lorinda E Coston father?

From Wikipedia
From parts of Canisteo came, in whole or part, the Towns of West Union, Hartsville, Hornellsville (1920), Greenwood (1827), Troupsburg (1808, 1820) and Jasper (1927).

Also from Wikepedia
The Senecas had a major village here called "Kah-ni-sti-oh." The first settlers arrived around 1788, making Canisteo one of the earliest locations occupied in the county.

Canisteo is rich in Indian lore. Site of the World Famous Living Sign, noted by both Ripleys Believe it or Not, and the Registry of Historical Places.

I have Stephen's children all being born in Hornell, not sure where I got that info.
