Benjamin G. Broadhurst and Kathryn Mae Logan married 1938

I am trying to find info on Benjamin and Kathryn Logan Broadhurst. They married 1938. She was expecting a child in September or October 1939. Apparently she fell, and died from complications of infection, and lost the child in the process. She was from Independence, Missouri. We have several letters to her family from her. Ben worked for P.F. Collier - Harvard Classics and traveled frequently from Chicago, Illinois, Buffalo and New York, New York, Connecticutt and Rhode Island. I cannot find any info as to where she died, when she died exactly, or anything after her last letter dated September 14, 1939. She just sort of vanished. Any help would be most appreciated. Thank you.

Uncle Tom was a favourite of mine and if I was around would give me a hot bun when cooked. My Great gran Sarah Tucker, nee Broadhurst came to Australia in the sailing ship Hannah More at age 6 I think. I have the records around here some where.

Florence J. Lewis, b. 03 Jun 1873 in Pender County, NC was my g-grandmothers sister. She died on Feb. 4, 1917 after her clothing caught fire while she was doing the laundry in a tub in her yard. Her death certificate has her last name as Broodhurst but her husband signed it Broadhurst. My problem is I cannot read his first name. Looks to start with a "J". They weren't married at the time of the 1910 census and I'm not having any luck with the little information I have on finding out what his name is. I'd like to also know if they had any children. He gave his address at the time as Burgaw, NC.

Any help appreciated!

I heard from one descendant (quite a few years ago when I was actually pursuing Broadhurst genealogy) that "B. Hurst" was the name recorded on immigration docs... Appears that the immigration officer thought his name was Broad Hurst and wrote it as B. Hurst --apparently it stuck.... Behurst is the phonetic version.... Just as the Broadus variant occurred because of the pronounciation of Broadhurst was slurred in a British regional dialect and in US southern English... Names have a curious history.
Not sure what info you are after.

William married Frankey Harville in January 1788 (marriage bond between William Broadhurst and Hazael Harville for the marriage of their children William Broadhurst and Frankey Harville. Signed and dated 31 Dec 1787. Fauquier County, VA)

William and Frankey had 5 sons.

William had used the abbreviation "B.hurst" in numerous documents and when his son Samuel arrived in Missouri, they recorded the name as "Behurst" or "Beherst" and that stuck with the descendents of Samuel Broadhurst/Behurst.

William died in 1826 -(Will: William Behurst, dated 24 Jul 1826, Duplin County, NC, Wills, p 80, #255; CRO35.801 ; 6/A-201, Oct term.)

Carolyn Ramsbottom
Broadhurst One Name Study
Guild of One Name Studies No. 4963

There is a lot of information available about this family and there are two "descendant" trails related, the family that came from England and its natural descendants, and a former slave family owned by the William Broadhurst family that took the Broadhurst surname after emancipation. I assume that those related will respond with what they know..... This is not my Broadhurst line and I did not keep the information related to these families after I passed it along to those directly related.

Greetings from Australia,

Unfortunately, I do not have any information regarding your direct line. But you may be interested to know that there were not many with the "Broadhurst" name in Ireland at that time.

It is interesting that your James was born in Dublin as was my gggrandfather, William, I do not have the date of his marriage or death. I only know he married an "Anne". I have only been able to track the names of 3 of their children, my great grandfather, William Joseph, his brothers, Thomas and John.

William was transported to Australia, Thomas migrated to the Americas and John died in 1848 leaving an only child that he had named after his brother Thomas.

So after all this rambling, the point I am making is that it could be a possibility that your James and my William could have been brothers or 1st cousins.

Regards
Beverley

Broadhurst DNA Testing

I had urged DNA testing to try to determine whether some proposed links between Broadhurst families could be established. With disappointment I report that I have completed two levels of DNA testing to try to determine connections between various Broadhurst individuals and that no connections were found. I conclude from that there is no link between my Broadhurst ancestry going back to William Broadhurst of Ashby de la Zouch and the William Broadhurst reputed to be the ancestor of the Ohio-Michigan Broadhurst clan. Those of you who show that link in your trees should discard that connection as specious. I am also disappointed with the information provided by the testing company based on the testing, which was close to incomprehensible and singularly unhelpful because it was generic rather than specific. Each question generated a response for fees of hundreds of $$$ more in fees. This appears to be more hype than helpful. I would not bother to do it again. I do not think it is useful for the family historian or the genealogist. Arthur G Broadhurst

Our family names now include ADAMS, ASPIN, BAILEY, BAKER, BONE, BRADBURY, BRADSHAW, BROADHURST, COLLINS, CROSSLEY, DAVIS, HOWARTH, HOWORTH, HUXLEY, JONES, LEVINE, PABST, PHILLIPS, RINFRET, SCHLETTER and WOODWARD among others.
I have just started the "Broadhurst Families" blog at broadhurstfamilies.wordpress.com and invite you to stop by and take a look.
Aloha for now.
