Re: LOOKING FOR SCOTT BROADWAY

I'm replying to your message 12 years later, and you may already know that Scott passed away, though I don't have any details. He and I were friends in the Navy and we lost touch in the early 90s. I learned of his death by reading Scott's father's obituary -- which indicated Scott's death preceded his father's. If you have details, please respond.

Thanks,

Matt

I am looking for John Henry Noon married to Mary Ann Dickinson in 1886, Jamestown , St Helena. Have traced them to Hong Kong 1888 and then Stirling 1901.

I'm looking for any indication of the William R Broadway (abt 1837 or 1839 (also incorrectly listed at 1849 on one document)family in the 1880 census. His wife is Hannah Wall (abt 1844), children that would have been in the home at that time are Nancy Moriah (abt 1862), Phebe Caroline (abt 1866), George Washington Marcus Layfatee (abt 1868), John Thomas (abt 1871), WJ James (abt 1871) (those two are twins), Mary Elizabeth (abt 1874), and Albert Waits (abt 1877)

I have the family in Davidson County NC in both the 1870 and 1900 census records, but have yet to be able to locate them in the 1880 records. Records for John Thomas and WJ James exist in a family Bible according to a distant cousin who no longer has access to the Bible, and I know that at least John Thomas survived to adult hood but with the missing 1880 census I can't link him to the family as neither of the twins was with the family be 1900.

I'm also looking William himself in the 1860 and 1850 census. His father would also be William R Broadway (abt 1821) and Sarah Cobb (DOB unknown) according to the same relative.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated

I was recently investigating this part of my family again, and came across this post.

I can't say much about the family in South Africa, but either my father or his cousin originally gave me the information that Byron went to S.A. to become a harbourmaster. He took his daughters with him, it seems, but his son Albert Byron Broadway married my father's aunt Mary Ann Day. She died quite young, but they had one daughter, Winnifred, my father's cousin. It was when her step-daughter died recently that I looked again at this part of my family tree.

Re: BROADWAY FAMILY OF ST HELENA, ATLANTIC ISLANDS

I have conducted extensive research on the St Helena Broadways, but thus far have not found any link with the Broadway family in India. Mary Ann Broadway (dtr of George Broadway & Ann Knipe) was christened in 1799, making her too old to be the Mary Ann Broadway who married John Buckley in 1835 (the India Office records in the British Library give their ages as 14(!!) & 23).

I also have no evidence that the Mary Ann Broadway born on St Helena ever left the island. My sources include the British Library records, the IGI, & much complicated 'googling'.

Unfortunately all these records are incomplete; there were many more Broadways in St Helena and in India than there are records.

If there is a connection, it may be that several members of the same Broadway family in England joined the East India Company, perhaps around the same time.

My oldest traced Broadway is Caleb, born around 1752, and the first record I can find of him is in St Helena in 1777. I do not know where he was born. I do not know if he was the first Broadway in St Helena. I do not know if his forebears were also HEIC employees, and if so, where they were based.

I have spent many days poring over old muster rolls etc in the British Library, but as I work full-time, I am unable to make a habit of this. I have come to a bit of a dead end trying to trace HEIC employees in the 1700s; if you, or anyone else reading this message can point me in the right direction, I'd be most grateful!

Please could you also let me know what your sources are, and whether or not they are verified by official records (I have not used existing 'member trees' in my research, as sadly they can contain inaccuracies based on assumptions).

Many thanks,

Miranda

My wife, Grace is the great grand-daughter of Philip Neville BROADWAY(police Lieutenant of the Maharajah of Kashmir) and we have traced the Broadway family in India back to the father (also Phillip) of Phillip Broadway - cavalry officer cum riding instructor who died in Chunar, India in 1829. There seems to be a link between the Indian and St Helena Broadways as shown by the marriage of Mary Ann Broadway (daughter of George Broadway and Ann Knipe) to John Buckley in Chunar, India on 28.7.1835 but we cannot find it despite the fecundity of Henry and Eliza Broadway! Could it be that Phillip the elder was a brother or cousin of Caleb?!
We are interested to hear your thoughts.
Many thanks
Godfrey and Grace Bishop
