My grandfather Raymond Broadwell was the son of Richard Broadwell. He had a twin brother names Earl and triplet sisters, Faith, Hope and Charity. I have been told that he did not die in the raid at Coffeyville Kansas. Supposedly, he was shot, a family friend found him, hid him and nursed him back to health. He then traveled to Jackson, MI where he became a minister. The friends who found him identified another member of the gang as Dick Broadwell so that the authorities would not be looking for him.

He looks to be about 70 years old.

I found Mosgrove Broadwell in the 1910 census for Urbana (Champaign Co.) IL, age 64, born OH, living with wife Sarah E., age 62. In Ancestry’s FamilyTree, Adam Mosgrove Broadwell is listed with birthdate of 4 Jul 1844, born Champaign Co., OH, and died 27 Mar 1915. Wife was Sarah E.
I have an original 2” x 6” studio photograph of “Val Jean Broadwell”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photo was taken in Joliet, IL and he looks to be about age 18.

I found “Val Jean Broadwell” in the WWI draft registrations for Joliet, showing his birthdate as 27 Oct 1898. In the 1930 census for Joliet, he was age 31. In Joliet’s 1900 census, a Eugene Broadwell Jr. is shown with birthdate of Oct 1898, so this has to be the same man.
Dick Broadwell, member of Dalton Gang-where are his parents buried?

I have seen information stating that Dick Broadwell was brought back to Hutchinson, Kansas and was buried in his family plot in the Hutchinson Cemetery. The only cemetery thought to be active in the city of Hutchinson at that time (Oct. 1892) was the large Eastside Cemetery. The problem is that there are no records of any Broadwells being buried there. Popular Broadwell family history states that Dick's parents were William B. Broadwell, who died about 1905, and Elsie Jordan, who died in 1917. It would appear that to find where Dick is buried we need to locate where his parents are buried?

I'm sure that this would have been a story told and retold among members of this line of the Broadwell family.
I have received the widow's pension application by Mary Florence Broadwell Mitchell Monroe for Charles Monroe's Civil War service.

She married Isaac N Mitchell in Troy, Miami County, Ohio in 1859. They were divorced in January 1877 in Randolph County, Indiana.

Elvira, the first wife of Charles Monroe, is a sister to Mary Florence and Ellen. Elvira and Charles married on Dec 31 1874 in Pueblo, Pueblo County, Colorado. Elvira died on June 14 1881. It did not state where she was buried.

Mary Florence married Charles Monroe on July 2 1882 in Pueblo, Pueblo County, Colorado. Charles died on November 5 1893 in Pueblo and is buried in the Pioneer Cemetery.

Neither Elvira nor Mary Florence had any children by Charles.

Josiah F Smith, Judge of Police Court, also made a deposition supporting Mary Florence's application. He states that he is her second cousin. He came to Pueblo in the 1870s.

Donald - This does indeed look like the family I am searching for. Given that the father died and the mother remarried by the 1850 census - and that I could never find the three known sisters in one household on any census - I might not ever have been able to connect the sisters without your note.

I am still waiting for Mary Florence's widow pension application through Charles Monroe's service, hoping that it will give further Broadwell family information. My interest is actually in Mary Florence's son, Douglass, and his daughter Florence A Mitchell (who appears to have been raised by her grandmother).

I have the following information, which looks like it would be a match for the family you are researching:

Name:	William Broadwell

Birth:	2 Sep 1810	Place: Morristown, Morris Co., NJ

Death:	10 Jul 1845	Place: Dayton, Montgomery, OH

Burial:	Place: Woodland Cemetery, Dayton, OH

Father:	Ephraim Broadwell (1785-1849)

Mother:	Jane Ross Gardner (1781-1861)

Marriage:	25 Mar 1834	Place: Montgomery Co., OH

——————————————————————————————————
Spouse:	Elvira H. Smith

Birth:	1816

Death:	11 Sep 1873	Place: Dayton, Montgomery, OH

Burial Place: Woodland Cemetery, Dayton, OH

Other spouses:	McKain

Children

1 F:	Ellen Broadwell

2 F:	Mary Broadwell

3 F:	Julia Broadwell
Birth:	7 Oct 1839

Death:	22 Nov 1902

Burial:	............................	Place: Woodland Cemetery, Dayton, OH
Spouse:	Jethro Hoffman

4 F:	Elvira Broadwell

Information on this Broadwell family can be found in the Collections of the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania, which are microfilmed and available through the LDS library. Information on William and his family is not easily found in this volume, but is rather hidden in the text about the administration of his father Ephriam's estate.

Mary Florence and Ellen Broadwell of OH

Mary Florence Broadwell, born about 1842 in OH, married first to Isaac N Mitchell in Miami County, Ohio, in 1859. She had two known sons, Douglass born 1860 and Walter born about 1867. By 1880, she is in Randolph County, Indiana, and listed as divorced.

She would shortly be found in Pueblo, Pueblo County, Colorado, on that state's 1885 census married to Charles Monroe.

Her sister, Ellen Broadwell (born about 1840), was already in Pueblo in the Monroe household in 1880. It may be that another sister, Elvira, was Charles' first wife.

Mary Florence and Ellen, along with Douglass and Walter, would remain in Pueblo through the mid-1890s. Charles died sometime after 1893, and by 1897, the two sisters and the two boys were living in Denver, Colorado.

By 1900, the family would be in Los Angeles, California. Mary Florence died in 1921; Ellen died in 1927.

I have tried to identify what Broadwell family they belonged to but can not find anything definite from the census. At times, the sisters stated that both parents were born in Massachusetts, then that their father was from New Jersey and the mother from Mass, and in later years that their father was from New Jersey and the mother from New York.

If anyone is working with a Broadwell line in Ohio and can ID Mary Florence and Ellen and a possible younger sister Elvira, please let me know.

Broadwells in Mich > Calif

Hello
I am trying to identify the wife of William H Broadwell. About 1898, he married Rose B. ? In 1900, they are living in Burt, Alger, MI with her uncle, George Buxton, living with them. Her death certificate indicates her mother was a Buxton, her father a Kenschol. I am tracing the Buxton family (they were from Ingham Co., MI primarily) and two of the sisters, Lucy & Ann, I can't trace past 1860/1870. There's no trace of the name Kenschol in Michigan. In 1910 the Broadwell's were in Sierra, CA. 1920 found them in Tacoma WA, with Rose's sister Mae, married name Reed, and niece Marvel and nephew Russel living with them. 1930 finds the Broadwell's in Los Angeles, and they both died there in the early forties.

William & Rose in the CA Death Index:
Name:	Broadwell, Rose B
Social Security #:	0
Sex:	FEMALE
Birth Date:	24 May 1873
Birthplace:	Michigan
Death Date:	28 Apr 1942
Death Place:	Los Angeles
Mother's Maiden Name:	Buxton
Father's Surname:	Kenschol

Name:	Broadwell, William H
Social Security #:	0
Sex:	MALE
Birth Date:	9 Feb 1872
Birthplace:	Michigan
Death Date:	13 Jul 1941
Death Place:	Los Angeles
Mother's Maiden Name:	Burns
Father's Surname:	Broadwell

I've scoured the 1880 & 1900 census for Rose or Mae/May born in Michigan to an English mother (all of George's sisters were born in England) and have yet to find either. Hoping maybe someone on the Broadwell side might know

Thanks in advance
Tiffany

My husb is direct desc from Samuel Broadwell who was b in NJ s of Josiah, Samuel fought in Rev War from Morris Co, NJ, he was m: Mary Lindsley in NJ, he came to Ky. where he m: (2) Catherine Cowan (don't know when or where Mary died or buried). Samuel is buried here in East Broadwell Cemetery, he was a generous man, wealthy, & religious, he passed those great qualities to his sons for they also were quite wealthy, generous and religious, besides having large families. I have quite abit of info on Samuel desc and will gladly share info. I have found that there isn't much known about Samuel after leaving NJ & coming to Ky. except by his desc. Would like to see this man's family included in the Broadwell genealogy. He was one of the early pioneers to our county and we have a village "Broadwell" named for his son.

I've just begun to do a little search for my daughter in law on the Broadwells of NC, particularly Wake County and I ran across your 2000 posting.

I have tracked her line back to a P. W. (Pinkney) Broadwell. born about 1830 and evidently died (or left before 1880). He married a Lucy Pollard, d/o Joshua and Elizabeth Reavis (Revis) in Wake County in March 1864. They had 4 daughters - Virginia (Jennie), Margaret, Rome (?), and Pinkney. Sometime after the 180 census Lucy moved to NY with her daughters. Will appreciate any help you might have.

Tom Bay, Powell, OH

My ggggrandfather was Isaac Stallings. On the 1850 and 1860 census of Wake County, NC his wife is listed as Lucy. I have found a marriage bond in Wake County for an Isaac Stallings married Delacy Broadwell on 4/30/1845. The dates fit for this to possibly be my Isaac and Lucy. Can you help me confirm this and is this Delacy the same Delacy listed on your site as the daughter of John W. Broadwell, Sr. I am also looking for the ancestors of Isaac.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated,

Walt

For DAR records I need proof of Cynthelia's birth in St. Louis, Missouri in 1819. Early Settlers of Sangamon County, Illinois only says that John B. Broadwell and wife Betsy Pratt had a child born in St. Louis.
Thanks for any help.

You don't need to go but one more generation back to find your DAR connection.

Josiah Broadwell, Moses Broadwell's father, served in the Colonial wars. See if you can find Virkus, Frederick Adams, ed., "The Standard Genealogical Encyclopedia of the FIRST FAMILIES OF AMERICA", vol. 3, 1933. Page 209 shows another lineage that leads back to Josiah.

More precisely, John Carroll Power's "History of Early Settlers of Sangamon County, Ill." states: "CINTHELIA, born Oct. 17, 1819, in St. Louis, was married in Sangamon county, Ill., to Alexander B. Irwin. See his name." (p. 143)

Are you looking for his ancestry, or information about his descendants? His ancestry is well documented, but I do not know anything about his descendants.

William Broadwell II 1682- 1746, & Jane Darling 1699-
3. Josiah Broadwell 1718- 1774, & Sarah Briant 1723-1774
4. Moses Broadwell 1764- 1827 & Jane "Jenny" Broadwell 1767-1836
5. William Broadwell 1799-1824 & Margaret Stevenson
6. William B. Broadwell 1825- abt 1905 & Elsie Jordan 1835-1917
7. Richard Latham Broadwell b. 1862, Logan Co., IL
d. 5 Oct 1892, Coffeyville, Montgomery Co., Kansas

It should also be noted that Jane “Jenny” Broadwell was the daughter of William Broadwell III, a brother to Josiah Broadwell, so he has two lines of descent there in the 3rd and 4th generations.
