Hi Im hoping that someone may be able to help me peice this together.
I have a marriage licence from 1883 which marries a George Swindells to a Annie Hooley the witness are Samuel Brocklehurst and Mary Jane Swindells.
Next
Samuel Hooley died in 1893 and left his estate to a Mary Brocklehurst wife of John Brocklehurst and John Hooley. I thought their may be a connection between the Samuel and the John Brocklehurst with one of them married to Mary being a swindells I no its a long shot but it just seems like it could work somehow.
1883 is the only date I have and the bride and groom were 22 and 20 any help would be wonderful.

Jolorah is my mother's cousin. I am also researching the Brocklehurst that she is. I have found a possible match in the marriage records in England for a Levi Brocklehurst and a Catherine Dunn on 14 JAN 1828 at the Parish Church of St. Mary, Prestwich, Lancashire, England. The first child I have listed on an 1850 census in the US is Mary, born 1836 in England. The family was in Phila. and Levi was a machinist. I have never seen him listed other than Levi. He is buried in Cedar Hill Cemetary in Frankford section of Phila. PA. Buried on 10 MAY 1867. I know his son, Robert was buried there and also his son-in-law Alexander Brown.(husband of Mary) I suspect his wife and some other children are also there. I found some Brocklehurst's born in Lancashire England in 1828, and 1832 and thought they may have been part of this family that stayed behind in England. Arthur Brocklehurst, baptized 19 NOV 1828 in Manchester Eng. and Eliz, Baptized 1 JUL 1832 in Manchester Lancashire Eng.
On the New York Passenger List for 1 FEB 1840 are listed Levi, Catherine, Arthur, George and Mary Brocalist. Ages don't seem to make any sense at all though. Do you have any information on these families?

Thanks, Kathleen

Can anyone help

I am searchng for the children of James and Mary. James was born in Bury Lancashire circa 1866 his mothers name was Hannah and his father was Samual. James married Mary (nee Greenhalge) in 1891 in Stand Church I think, certainly in Stand in Whitefield. They lived in Radcliffe on Grundy Street according to the 1901 census.

James William Brocklehurst is my biological grandfather via James William Brocklehurst Gibbs and Clara Gibbs (nee Kelly). James was born in 1931 after Mary's death and was acknowledged by James as his son, my father lived with James untill just before James's death around 1944/45. My father believes Mary and James had 7 children, all boys, and one daughter who they adopted. According to my father James fell at home and died as a result of his injuries he was about 79/80 years old.

Jolorah, seen your message RE; Levi Brockalist?
I have been researching the name Brocklehurst (and the many various spellings) for 45 years. I only know of 3 Levi Brocklehurst's (all in the same pedigree) and none of them fit the bill of your Levi. I could of course be wrong (I do not profress to perfect)but I doubt it is a Brocklehurst. There are also no Levi Brockalist's on either the 1851 or 1861 census, If you do find that he was in fact a Brocklehurst I would naturally be interested to know about him.
Best wishes
Frank Brocklehurst

Gillian, Not sure if we have been in contact before but if we have then I apologise. To start with and at the risk of boring you,I should explain that I have been researching the NAME Brocklehurst as a One Name Study Worldwide for 45 years. I put different Brocklehurst pedigree's together (not necessarily my own) and I have 90 to date. Samuel Needham and his family are on one of my largest pedigree's which I call "Sheldon" (the village in Derbyshire where the family originates.
If you can be more specific on what you are looking for, I will be only too pleased to help. Not sure what you already know but just in case you are not aware, there are in fact 3 Samuel Needham Brocklehurst's on this pedigree. The one you refer too was K.I.A.in Belgium in 1918.
Look forward to hearing from you in due course
Best wishes
Frank Brocklehurst
PS: If you wish to contact me by email my email address is
frank.brocklehurst1@btinternet.com

My Brocklehursts also hail from Flash. As the living was so hard there the men often had multiple occupations, Farmer & Miner. Also many were pedlars travelling countrywide but also farming.
Also as Flash is so close to the 3 County boundaries they did give a variation of Derbyshire/ Staffordshire or Cheshire as their birth places. In fact some of mine were born I believe at Brandside which was just in Derbyshire but were buried in Flash.
Anyone else on the Thomas B & Hannah Norton line? The Christian name Theophilus coming through the Nortons.

Following more research I think my Brocklehursts originate from Flash, Staffordshire. Keen to make links.

IGI has the baptisms of Martha, George, Sarah and Thomas there in the 1820s/30s. Martha's middle name is given as 'Goodwin' the same as George's son Thomas a generation later.

The parents of these children, George Brocklehurst and Hannah (Unknown) are of great interest to me - while George is described as an innkeeper in 1841, in 1850, his son George's marriage certificate has him as a miner.

Thanks for reading,

Elizabeth

Hi all,

I have got to a bit of a brick wall with my 3x Gt Grandfather George Brocklehurst who married Catherine (Kate) Hibbins in Cambridgeshire in 1850.

Census records give various birthplaces - Buxton, Derbyshire (most frequently) or Barton, Derbyshire or Flash, Staffordshire.

I have found a Brocklehurst family in Stone Bench, Buxton in 1841, with a George of the right age. This would suggest his parents are George Brocklehurst and his wife Hannah, and that he has siblings named Martha and Sarah. This would be great, except that they are all recorded as not born in County, and indeed, the column for "Scotland, Ireland or Foreign Parts" is ticked.

So - can anybody tell me whether I am on the right track with George, and if so, where the family might have originated? It is quite possible that George grew up in Buxton and assumed he was born there but actually wasn't.

Thanks for reading,

Elizabeth

I grew up in Allentown, the grandaughter of Florence Kleckner Newcomer and Joseph Newcomer. I now live in Breinigsville which is west of Allentown. I do have pictures of Alexander but not of anyone before that. I would love to see a picture of Sarah. I had red hair and was told I got it from Alexander whose mother was Irish. Is that true? Some places she is listed as born in England and at least one place in Ireland. She is that reason I got into genealogy as I always was attracted to Ireland and wanted to know what her mother's maiden name was. It would be great to get together when it gets warmer. I am not a fan of driving to Phila., but I could probably find a friend that would take us there.
where are you located? In Philly? nearby? I am across the bridge in Jersey so perhaps when the weather warms we could visit the cemetery--I no longer am as able to walk as I once did-I grew up "grave hopping" something my mother taught me. But would love to try to pin their grvesite down.
I was in possession of Gr Gramma Sarah's brown fur muff for years til one day my four of my five young children found it in a closet and decided to play football with it--it was brittle with age and tore into shreds--It still hurts to think about that after all of these years--it was one of my prize possessions--the "fur" flew in more ways than one that day!
Are you from the Lehigh Valley?
My family was also in possession of Gramma Brocklehurst's portrait--one of those other things that I have lost track of, She was very soft, lovely, slightly over -weight but my one aunt looked so much like the picture, I always thought I could picture her. My grandfather, Alexander's brother was very proud of being British, very arrogant, better than the PA Dutch woman her married!
When the weather warmws we must meet to exchange memories.
Were you ever told anything about Gr grampa Henry? Grampa Walter often used the term "He's full of the Old Harry", which I thought meant full of the devil. I was older when I realized Henry and Harry were one and the same! He meant hhis Father!
I grew up in a small town just north of Allentown. Grampa Walter and family lived in Lehighton so we saw them almost every weekend growing up--and Gramps was a story teller--a great weaver of partly true tales but he never spoke of his siblings--Mom knew aunt Mary and Aunt Josephine and wanted to visit Philly to find out more about Gramma Brocklhurst.
more later
Joanne

I also found the Brocalist info but the dates are so different that I can't confirm it. I have looked for death records for Levi and Catherine or burials in local cemeteries but have come up with none.

Alfred's older brother George's middle name was Levi and yes, Robert's may also have been. I have the cemetery record for Robert and he only has the middle initial listed. He is buried next to Alexander Brown, Mary's husband. The cemetery in Phila. (Frankford) is very near to the last residence I have for Mary and Alexander.

good mornin'
I've a strange piece of data to throw out for comment

Levi Brocalist 23, Catherine 23, Arthur 34 farm? from England, George 21, Mary 32
Levi Brocalist ????
Arrival Date: 1 Feb 1840
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1817
Age: 23
Catharine Brocalist
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1817
Age: 23
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England
Ship Name: Patrick Henry
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Any thoughts re this group of people? Possibly Brocklehursts?

As for Levi and Catharine returning to England, my thought has always been they died before !870 Census-- Levi was noted as 60 in 1860 not too young to suppose he died within the decade--I have tried to find his wife liiving by herself or with a child and come up with nothing. As for Anna Catherine she was 17 in 1870 could have married. Woman are so hard to trace because of the surname change. Any ne info would be apreciated.
I do have this from Allentown church records:
Sept. 19, 1860---ALFRED KLECKNER born to HENRY and SARAH Brocklehurst Kleckner, baptized October 6, 1863, parents were sponsors. Later baptized with (uncle ROBERT BROCKLEHURST as sponsor on Feb. 16, 1863, Zion Church, Allentown. (information reversed in other church records)
I also have long suspected that Levi may be his middle name which was often used after baptism.

good mornin'

To your many questions, I have no answers yet. I have often wondered if Levi, Catherine and Ann returned to England sometime after 1860. There are some Brocklehurst's listed as Mr and Mrs but nothing to definetly show they went back there. My mother who is 92, does not remember much about the Kleckner family other than her grandfather Alexander. I will try to jog my aunt's memory again. She is 100 and has a lot of memory issues. Please feel free to contact me at my email address for further info exchange.
Kathleen

my descent is through Sarah Brocklehurst and Henry Keckner of Allentown. I've often wondered how Sarah met Henry--ws it because of her brother Robert? Or was ith because Henry was a teamster for the llumbering and brewery in ther Kleckner family?
Have you ever found from what part of England Levi and Catherine called home? I've been trying for years with no sucess.
Will gladly trade info with you. I grew up in the Lehigh Valley area but never visited Cedar Hill--though did drive to home on first st. in Allentown. Do you know what happend to anna Catherine? Wat were you told of the death of Henry Kleckner, Sarah's husband? Mom always said he was killed in a buckboard accident but his war records say he died from lung problems contracted during the War.
And Henry's father--Charles dissapears from the record very early. so much to ask so much to share
I wait to hear from you
Joanne Lorah

Levi and Catherine had 4 children that I am aware of: Mary b. 1836 in England, Sarah b. 25 MAR 1841, Anne Catherine b. 1842, and Robert L., b. 1844 and wounded at Gettysberg. He is buried in Cedar Hills cemetery in Frankford, Phila. PA.
His sister, Mary married Alex Brown and lived in Phila. in 1870. I visited the cemetery and that is how I found out about Mary because she signed for the burial. I could not find the plot, but I do need to go again and look for it.

I am related to Henry and Sarah's son, Alexander Kleckner who married Leah Susan Heffelfinger in the Lehigh Valley. Please let me know if you have more to add to this. I have been adding to the descendent lines of the Kleckners.

Hi Dave, I am not sure if you received my previous message re William Brocklehurst. Our great grandfather (William) was born in 1856 and lived in Weaverham originally. He was my grandfather's father (my grandfather was John Brocklehurst). William married a Clara Dale. William's father was called Joseph ... won't go into more detail as it may be not the family you are researching. I live in Oz but sisters have done research on the Brocklehurst family. Good luck with search. Pam Holt (nee Brocklehurst) .. sunny Brisbane.

I am looking for some information on my Great Great Great Great Grandfather Charles Brocklehurst. I believe that he was born in Biddulph Staffordshire in around 1800 (give or take a few years in either direction). His wife was called Mary. I have found information on his children, my great great great grandfather being his son Cyrus (born 1832 Congleton Cheshire) but would like to find out some information on Charles and Mary and their parents if possible. I don't know whether anybody is researching this same line but would be happy to share information that I have and would love to know if anyone has any information that could help me.

Laura Brocklehurst

I child, Mary b. 1836 in England, the rest (Sarah, Ann, Robert) were born in Delaware Co. PA. The Family later moved to Phila. I can't find them after 1860 census. I did find Robert buried in Phila. next to sister Mary Brown's husband Alexander. Robert was in the Civil war. Sarah married my g grandfather, Henry Kleckner in Allentown PA. Any info on this family would be appreciated.

When I visited 10 or 12 years ago they were very clean but about 2 years ago all covered in lichen etc. They did publish a booklet of the MIs in the churchyard, there are several more Brocklehursts. There was also a booklet published several years ago, copied & sent to me from another Flash researcher in Canada, Uphill All the Way. Has a fantastic amount of information.Best reply to janpowell@btinternet.com
Arthur J Brocklehurst, born 1855 or 1856

Does anyone have any information on a CHARLES J BROCKLEHURST born 1855/56 in Sydenham, Kent (nowadays London)? I am certain he was closely related to my great-great-grandfather Thomas Brocklehurst (born 1824 Luton, Bedfordshire). Arthur J's father was probably one of Thomas' brothers, but I can't discover which.

Here's what I know of Arthur J:

1861 census Arthur J Brocklehurst aged 5 was living with Robert Brown's family at Farleigh Farm, Farleigh Wallop, near Basingstoke, Hampshire and was described as nephew; Brown's wife was SARAH SHILTON BROCKLEHURST, sister of the aforementioned Thomas Brocklehurst. This suggests Arthur was orphaned.
1871 census Arthur aged 15 was boarding with one Thomas Howard at 7 Crowndale Road, St Pancras, London.
1881 census Arthur aged 25 and with a 1 year old daughter Gertrude (born Millbrook, Cornwall) was living with William H Hoult's family in Walthamstow, Essex, described as son-in-law; Hoult's wife at the time, his second, was MARY ANN G BROCKLEHURST, another sister of Thomas Brocklehurst. The son-in-law description suggests Arthur was married to a daughter of William Hoult by his first wife, but I can't confirm this: an Arthur Brocklehurst married Emma Maria Jarman in Newton Abbott in 1878 but I can't tell if this is the same Arthur. Arthur's daughter Gertrude was definitely adopted by the Hoults before the 1891 census and was living with them in Herne Bay, Kent in 1891 and 1901.

In 1889 Arthur married again, Elizabeth Alice (or Alice Elizabeth) Thompson (b 1861 Islington, London) and in 1891 was a grocery manager in Prittlewell, Southend, Essex, in 1901 a grocery foreman in Leyton, Essex. They had three children all born in Southend.
Living with them in Leyton in 1901 was the family of Alfred Ashby who is described as Arthur's brother-in-law so it seems Arthur's wife Elizabeth/Alice and Ashby's wife Caroline were sisters.

Can anyone help?

Steve Brocklehurst
Beverley, East Yorkshire

I haven't yet posted my family tree as I haven't been researching for very long but last weekend I went to the graveyard in Flash to find the grave of Solomon Brocklehurst. I came across four graves of the Brocklehurst family. Details are below, but some were unreadable with age and also because of lack of light:
1) Sarah, wife of George, died 1856 aged 52
2) William, son of Solomon & Mary, died aged 5 weeks. Also Solomon, above, died March 1864 aged 37
3) James, of Turnedge, died 6 February 1827 aged 61
also Nancy, wife of the above who departed this life ...1835..aged 60...also Solomon his son died 31 July 1815 ( I believe this family is on an ancestry tree)
4) Thomas, son of Matthew and Elizabeth of Notbury, aged 1 year 8 months, also Matthew, son of the above who departed this life aged 1 year also Elizabeth, daughter of the above, who departed this life April 2? 1857 aged 16 years....................
Matthew and Elizabeth
Matthew died September 28th 1863 aged 61 years.
Also Elizabeth wife of Matthew who died June 7th 1886 aged 82 years. (I believe this family is on an ancestry tree too)

I hope this is of some benefit. I hope to revisit the graveyard in the future and clean the headstones. In the meantime, I have digital photos which I could email but they are not brilliant.
