On the Fairfield County SC query board in Dec 1997 there was a MARGARET MILLER who posed queries about the Broom/Broome family members. Specifically she mentioned Charles Broom and his Eldest son William. Her ISP provider is no longer in business. If anyone knows her current email address please have her contact me with a new email address to discuss Charles Broom. Or if she prefers, contact me through this message board. My address is
jcb37jr@earthlink.net

Jenny M. Broom married William Patton

I just found some an interesting anomoly on one of my dead ends. I have a William Patton who was born in Virginia in about 1789 who married (I thought) Jane or Jennie McBroom in Floyd County, Kentucky in February 1812.

However, the on-line Floyd County, Kentucky records have the following two marriages listed in 1812:

PATTON, William, m. Jenny M. Brown, Feb 12, 1812
PATTON, William m: Jenny McBROOM 2-9-1812

Does anyone else have a William Patton that married a Jenny M. Broom, or a Jenny Brown, instead of a Jenny McBroom? I am not sure if this is the same marriage entered twice with different names for the wife, or truly two marriages. I haven't found any Brooms or McBroom's in the 1810 census for the area, but I did find a 3 or 4 Browns who might have had females in Jennie's age group.

For a bit more information on what I do have, William and Jenny had 3 children (that I know of):

1. James Jarvey Patton (b. February 21, 1812 and married Minerva Gerard) This is my line.
2. Andrew Jackson Patton (b. March 10, 1816 and married Mary Gerard, who was also Minerva's sister)
3. David Patton (don't know birthdate)

The whole family moved from Kentucky in about 1819 -- we think first to Ohio, and then to Indiana -- so they aren't in the 1820 Kentucky census.

Both William Patton and Jenny McBroom/M. Brown are major dead ends for me, so any insight is appreciated.

I am cross posting this on the Patton and Brown lists also.

Thank you.

Marti
Broom, Broome families

These spellings are intermixed in families, for example:
Joseph Broom b 1811 Yorkshire, Eng is listed in the 1840 & 1850 Yates Co., NY Census as a "Broom"
in 1860 Huron Co., OH Census, Joseph is listed as a "Broome"

I believe all these families are intertwined: McBroom, McBroon, Broom, Broome, and Broon. My last name was changed to McBroon by the family after they moved west. Our original name was McBroom from TN.
I am collecting data on all variations of the name, whether due to family changes or census taker misspellings. I have lists of marriages, deaths and various families in the United States. I am in the process of publishing.

Could it be that Brom and Brum are also family members?

My line as follows: father; Ralph Henry Broome, gfather; John Henry Broome, ggfather; Jesse Wood Broome, gggrandfather; Leroy Broome, ggggrandfather; Solomon Broom. Solomon had two other sons by his first wife, Betsy Mims. They were Miles and Moses. Think Solomons' father was Burrell but not sure of this. Any info would be greatly appreciated.......James H.
I have found a Mariah Johnston, born in Ireland, living in Kansas. Her husband's name is William Johnston. Mariah is 20 years old in 1880. They have 2 children, William H. born in 1877 and Mariah, b. in 1879. I have not found any other Mariah Johnston in Kansas nor did I find any marriage. Since this William is also from Ireland, I would think maybe they were married in Ireland or it could be a census taker's mistake. Both children were born in Wisconsin.

Have just found some info & wondered if anyone knows any more about the family in question.

Info I had previously: my family, children George, Mary & Henry BROOM (all born in 1830s in Shirland, Derbyshire) In 1841 census they were living with a James Smith on his farm with no sign of parents, in 1861 had all gone their separate ways, but having just got the 1851 census, they are marked as George, Mary & Henry BROOM HINCH with parents George (c1814, Sheffield) & Mary (c1811, Sheffield) HINCH. There is no mention of whether they are step-kids, adopted or whether the mother is natural & the father isn't.

I have found a possible marriage of George Hinch & Mary Broom in 1841 (Dec Q) in Chesterfield, Derbyshire.

Anyone have any of these people in their trees or can find any relevant data, I would be VERY grateful!!

Who was M. A. Broom?

Trying to find out the full name of M. A. Broom, found in the
1880 census living in Fayette County, Illinois, occupation shoemaker. He was 43, born in TN, making his birthdate about 1836. His father was born in TN, his mother in NC.
His wife is the mysterious M. J. (Don't you just love census takers who wrote pages of initials instead of full names!)
In the household are children Florence (presumbly the Emma Florence who later married Couchman) who may or may not be M. J.'s daughter because M. J. is only 31 and Florence is 15, son Vincent, 12, and M. A. Broom's mother Elizabeth, age 77.
Please solve this mystery for me so I can go back another generation1
Broom - King connection

I am looking for a Broom ancestor in Lexington County, SC or a nearby county. In a 1950's note to a cousin, my grandmother stated that her grandmother was Rachel E. King (b. 1831, d. 1897) who married John Adam Reister (b. 1824, d. 1907). She also said that Rachel King's mother was a Broom, but gave no first name. I am therefore looking for a female Broom, born about 1800 (+/- 10 years), who married a King, first name unknown. Any help with this puzzle will be appreciated.

Fearing Twp., OH he is listed along with Peter and William who are listed as over 21. (In the 1810 census they are in the 26 to 45 category so they might be sons or brothers to John). There are other younger males and females. This is about all I know except he doesn't appear in the 1830 census. I would like to know where he came from before moving to Ohio.
