LILIAN MAUD BROOME -WOLVERHAMPTON DOB 1898

Lilian Maud Broome, she was aged about 20 in 1918. She was always known simply as Lily. I wonder if anybody will be able to help solve the mystery of what became of Lily almost 89 years ago?

“Lily was one of three children of William and Elizabeth Broome, who lived in the All Saints district of Wolverhampton. Lily’s younger brother was also called William, and known as Bill, and her younger sister is Dulcie.
“Lily ran away from home on Armistice Day, 11th November, 1918, and was never seen again. It is not known who she went away with, although it is possible that she had an association with an army man – possibly a captain or similar. Lily may have married him and travelled far and wide, she may even have gone abroad. I stress that this is only a possibility, and Lily may have gone away with someone entirely different, and possibly not very far away at all.

“After years of searching, where Lily went to remains a mystery, although she was last heard of in 1922 or 1923, when it is possible that she may have had a child, believed to have been called Joan, but possibly Jean or even John. Lily may have decided to have called the child an entirely different name – I do not rule anything out. Importantly, Lily may also have had other children later.

“Regrettably, I cannot trace Lily’s marriage certificate, and so her married name, which of course would be also be Joan/Jean’s maiden name, is not known. Lily’s married name is vital to trace Lily or any children and their descendants.

“On the possibility that Lily did not marry, and her name therefore remained as Lily Broome, I have still not managed to find out what became of her.

“Lily’s child Joan/Jean/John (or whoever) would be very old now, other children would be younger.

“I therefore ask any reader, who may have known of somebody aged between 70 and 85 (as at 2012) plus, female or male, and their mother’s maiden name was Lilian Maud Broome? I stress maiden name, not married name, as this is the only positive fact I have to go on. Could you be Joan/Jean/John, etc., or a younger child? I ask you to please contact me if you think Lily was your mother oor even your grandmother.....

“Any information from other Broome relatives who may have come across Lily in any family research, or from anyone who may have knowledge of Lily and/or her children, no matter how slight a link, would be most sincerely and eternally appreciated.”

Christy Broome-Hunt,
9 April 2012. My late mom is 99 years old today.

Unless both your father's parents were surnamed Broome you would need to test your maternal 1st cousins named Mr. Broome since your dad has the Y-chromosome of his father.

Last year there was a 1-day sale at FTDNA on Facebook on 15 April. If you want to know when there is a sale, send me your email address & phone # & I will phone you to tell you when I send you email. By the time I hear of a 1-day sale the day may be mostly spent & you may have already checked email for the day, thus I will need to phone you. Also you will need to get a cousin to agree to do the test, so you can have the kit mailed to him. Here is my contact info so you can contact me.

This applies to all BROOMs, BROOMEs, BROMEs, & BROUGHAMs. The McBROOMs DNA matches my BROOM/Es.
--
BroomDNA@Juno.Com
James W.
I would love to be a part of this project. Please tell me the cost and how to get this done. I have several male cousins that carry the Broome last name. My father has the Broome last name, but it is his mothers maiden name. So would he been a candidate or would it be better for one of his male first cousins to submit the dna?

Thank you,
Christy Broome-Hunt

Hi Sue - sorry to get back to you long after your post, but I've only just found your thread.

My maternal grandmother was a Broome from Grittleton, and lived as a child at the Star Inn in Hullavington, before she moved with her family to London. Her grandfather was Samuel Broome, born around 1833 in Grittleton, and my research shows his brother, Alfred Broom(e) (born around 1830, possibly in London) was your great great grandfather.

I have more if you are interested, but, so far, I have only gone back as far as your (and my!)great great great grandfather.

Regards,
Phil Mercer

I believe, this Jno (short for Jonathan) Broom is being continually merged into 2 pathways. I have this JB leaving Romney WVA in 1794 for KY, with at least 2 sons, John and William. He was awarded 200 acres of Bounty Land in KY for his War Service. His birth is ambigous at best. But family probably originated from the Philly/Darby Penn. area. Could have been via MD, not yet certain. His War Service began early 1777.

Interesting. Yes, there were vast numbers of Broom/es here in the 19th c. Like I said to David, ultimately the key will be sort them out in relation to eachother in order to go backwards.

WOuld you please let me know if you come across any relatives of Alfred Broom, son of James Thomas Broom, in the States? He came out there in the maybe 1930s, earlyish anyway, as a chauffeur and may have had children out there????
Thanks, Best, Sue
Re: Broom/e Grittleton, Wiltshire.....

Sue & David,

In 1982 I passed near Grittleton, Wiltshire going from one ancient famous place to the next: From Salisbury England 2.33 miles to Old Sarum then 7.87 miles to Stonehenge then 22.76 miles to West Kennett long barrow (& Avebury stone circle & Silbury Hill) then 20.73 miles would have taken me to Grittleton Wiltshire, but I went west 26.79 miles to the Roman Baths at Bath, 15.02 miles SW of Grittleton Wiltshire by road. I wish I'd known there were Brooms at Grittleton. There must be 200 Broom place names on the OS 1:50K maps of the UK. Are there any Broomes left in Grittleton?

My Broom Y-DNA (from the body of one of my maternal 1st cousins, Furman Broom III, at FTDNA), matches the Y-DNA (at SMGF.org) of a Broome who has his line back to 1490 in Shropshire. Almost all the Brooms at FTDNA match. I wonder if you Brooms of Wiltshire match those in Shropshire & thus mine. That is, I wonder if all Brooms descend from the same man who took the Broom/e surname in 1200-1400 AD.

I hope I don't offend anyone, but I wish MORE people would sign their messages with their given name and their surname plus email address. My contact info is:
--
James W. Green-R-L48 III
285 Agnew Road
Winnsboro SC 29180-6975
803-635-9236
BroomDNA@Juno.Com

I understand info on cst of research & alerts when there are dis'cnts are not allowed here at Rootsweb, so I guess we are censored here. That is why I would like email addresses included in messages. Also I don't want to bore everyone with my constant harping on DNA, which I see as the easiest & possibly only solution to our getting our old American lines back to the UK. You all who know your Broome line in the UK are the key for the rest us us, but only DNA matching can tell us if we are looking in the right English shire & parish, saving us years of research time.

I guess I should give the race of BROOMs that I am. My Brooms are R1b1a2a1a1b4. Since that is just the latest designation, I'll give the SNP that most all BROOMs are positive for: L21. R-L21 is a short designation for R1b1a2a1a1b4. So, what are you all? I should start signing my Broom/e messages
James W. Green-R-L48 III of Broom-R-L21.
Note that my Green & Broom are different races of R. R is the most common haplogroup in Europe since the ice age ended & the farmers arrived. Unlike BROOM/Es, there are a lot of unrelated GREEN/Es so my kind (R-L48) is rather rare. Surely there is more diversity among the BROOM/Es than we've seen in the DNA project at FTDNA. The results are public at:
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Broom/default.aspx?secti...
signed,
James W. Green-R-L48 III
BroomDNA@Juno.Com
Yes, got him , David!!!!! There's a Polly and an Emma as well. There may be more. I have looked through the Baptism reg. microfiche and have not yet checked them all carefully. My cousin did a lot of work on the tree and has two back to 1598 d. Others to early 1600s. She did a lot of work, though, personally, I want to get a lot more filled out. best, Sue

I am smusimusi@gmail.com
I would love to hear from you. We have found a lot of relatives recently ! Also some who are nearby! I will just get out the file and check if there is a Thomas on my list of siblings for my dear Grandpa Broom ! Hang on a sec........ Hold on, have to find the file and check him. Off hand, if you have Thomas' siblings as any of these, then we have a match ! From memory: Samuel,Elizabeth,Mary Jane, Harry,Philip, John Paul, etc. If it's "bingo", we have some cousins here who knew many of this generation! And there are still some of their families here!
All the best, Sue

FeliciaBroomeWillie,

I live on the land of Wm. Broom 1753-1826, my 3 greats grandfather here in Fairfield Co. SC which is 67.0 mi, 1 hour 33 minutes SW of Jug Broome Road, Union Co. NC according to googlemaps. I have always wondered if I am kin to the Broomes of Union Co. NC.

I checked for James C. Broome in Union Co. NC at findagrave.com & found:

Broome, James Cecil
b. Feb. 8, 1921 d. May 7, 1972
Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery
Marshville, Union County, NC

Broome, James Clamon 50864333
b. Apr. 25, 1910 d. Oct. 12, 1979
Faulks Baptist Church Cemetery
Marshville, Union County, NC

Searching for Nimrod Broom in Union Co. NC I find:

Broom, Nimrod Nw
b. May 9, 1842 d. Nov. 1, 1912
Broome Cemetery, Buford Township, Union County, NC
Turn right on dirt road off Armfield Mill Road at mail box 5426. 3/4 mile to cemetery in Buford Township, Union County, NC Added by: Stephen Miller.

I find Broom, James Jug b. Jul. 1, 1869 d. Jan. 7, 1957 in that cemetery. Nimrod seems to have the oldest stone. Clicking on his name I find Created by: Deloris Broom Record added: Aug 26, 2006. I wonder if that means Deloris Broom copied the graveyard then Stephen Miller took the photos later & uploaded them.

When you said "Both Nimrod and James C. (Jim Jug) Broome are my Grandfathers." I thought you meant your mom & your dad were Broomes & your parents' fathers were Nimrod & Jug. I guess "grandfathers" means "ancestors" & Nimrod is the father of Jim Jug. Do you know the Broom/e ancestors of Nimrod?

What is your contact info? Mine is below. When I click on your name in your message, I get the message "feliciabroomewillie has chosen to use the online Messages feature to remain anonymous. A paid Ancestry.com membership is required in order to initiate contact with Ancestry members ..."

I spend too much on genealogy already & so have not ever paid for Ancestry. I figured I would not find time in a mere year to get my money's worth. I never get through with emails that I can respond to. Maybe I could go to the library & check, since they have a library membership.
--
James W.
I have been to this Broome cemetery in Union Co, N.C. off Jug Broome Road to pay respects to my family members buried there. Both Nimrod and James C. (Jim Jug) Broome are my Grandfathers. Actually had visited 5 cemeteries with other family members as well, there in Union Co. Cleaned brush and debris from many of the headstones and areas around, they are not being maintained as they should be. Older folks are too old to keep up with them and the younger ones do not seem to have the same interest and/or up bringing so they do not know this needs to be done or have no interest to do it~ I drive up from South Florida to do this. Probably do for more visiting now~

South Carolina... his son 'Hardy Broom' moved to Marion County Mississippi around the early 1800's. At his death William gave away 1200 acres and 12 slaves.

It is my understanding that we decescended from the Plantangenet Royal family from England... but you know how that sort of stuff goes... I understand from the family tree that my 5th great grandfather (William Broom) was the son of Charles and Jane Broom... however I have no information about his parents...

Barry Broom

Hi Roger, Are you related to Rebecca? She replied to my post regarding John Zell Broome on the same day you posted this query. Too much of a coincidence not to mean something.

My maternal grandfather was Wilbur Zell Broome (1904-1998), son of Charles Wesley Broome (1872-1954), son of John Zell Broome (the younger? 1839-1872), son of John Zell Broome and Emily Blackford.

It sounds like your grandmother had some interesting tidbits regarding the Broome family. I would really like to hear them. I'm sure you know that sometimes a different people have different pieces of the puzzle and all it takes is some sharing to get a better picture.

For years there were stories within my family of our origins being through the illigitiment son of a King of England. When I got involved in genealogy I tracked down the source of this story and finally found out that my Great-Uncle Lloyd and found it in a book titled "Broome Stages" in the New York Public Library. The first time I got to NYC I scoured the genealogy section of the library to no avail. I eventually consulted the card catalog and found the reference to "Broome Stages". It was in the FICTION section.

I know there is a line of Broome related to a John Broome of New York City who outfitted privateers during the Revolutionary War who later became Lt. Gov of NY and for whom Broome Street in NYC and Broome County NY are named. So far I can find no link to this family.

There is also a line of Broome in Maryland in the late 1700's and some that migrated into the deep south. Again, no links yet.

John and Emily had 10 children of whom 3 died young. The others seem to have spread out. Joseph Blackford Broome moved to Utica, NY; William Lewis Broome moved to NYC; George Washington Broome and Lewis Henry Broom moved to New Jersey; while John Zell Broome (the younger) and Albert Elwood Broome stayed in Lancaster County, PA.

Albert Elwood Broome is a sad story. He went to work in South America to make money to get married. He was on his way home to be wed when he died of typhoid fever in Chicago at age 26.

Lewis Henry Broome had a son Bertram Clinton Broome who was married to a Helen Connery who stayed in Connecticut while Bertram was listed living on the Hopi Reservation in AZ in 1920 and in Santa Fe NM in 1930 as a civil engineer and draftsman.

I have a letter in my files that claims some of our Broome cousins went to TX and became cowboys. I'll have to dig that out again.

I would really appreciate exchanging information with you and hope to hear from you soon.

Bob Desch

Hi Cousin, I was beginning to think I was the only surviving decendant of John and Emily. Then I got not one but TWO responses the same day. Then I saw the last name on both and I suspect the two of you are related.

Who was your grandmother and what is her line back to John and Emily? You stated she had once filled out a family tree. Do you have a copy of it?

I would really like to explore this together with you. After all, two heads are better than one.

My mother is a Broome. My grandfather was Wilbur Zell Broome (1904-1998), the son of Charles Wesley Broome (1872-1954), the son of John Zell Broome (1839-1900, he would be a junior but I have never seen him refered to that way), the son of John Zell Broome (abt 1808-1872, husband of Emily Blackford).

Any chance you might know where and when John and Emily were married. I've been looking at all the Quaker records I can get my hands on but have never found a record of their wedding. If John was not a Quaker Emily may have had to leave the church and who knows where those records might be. The Broome family in my line were Evangelical United Brethern at least as far back as my G-Grandfather Charles Wesley Broome.

Look forward to hearing from you soon.

My ggg grandmother was also Emily Blackford and, while I don't have anything new to give you as I can't seem to find much either, I can at least confirm a couple of things. My grandmother had completed a Pedigree Chart which stated that Isaac Broome was the father of John Zell Broome and that Emily Blackford was a Quaker and might have family ties to William Penn. (That is NOT verified though.)
I hope you find more of what you are looking for and, if you find anything else in this line and care to share, I would be most appreciative.

Re: Broome to the Plantagenet royal family?

I know this is several years later but I have just begun researching our family line and came across this thread. If you are still willing to share any info you have about the Broomes, I would be very grateful. My mother's maiden name is Broome and we have traced back to John Zell Broome (1808-1872), son of Isaac Broome, but cannot go back further than that. My grandmother said one of the Broomes was from Shropshire but I cannot remember which. Also, our family has always maintained that we are descendent from the Plantagenet kings and we have had Burke's Landed Gentry documents in our family for a long time which detail the descendents of Geoffrey Plantagenet. It mentions John Broome in Shropshire and ends with Charles Broome,Esq. of Kent b.1770 who married Cecelia, daughter of William Bythesia, Esq. of Kent. I am trying to see if the connection really can be found. If you have ANY information about this line, I would be most grateful!
Rebecca

John, Back in 2001 you contacted me to say that you had information as to why John Broom was known as Johnny Cotterill. Circumstances, two divorces and a war got in the way of finding out more and now, here we are ten years later, and I never did get your response with the information. Do you still recall the information that you were going to give me then? David Griffin

James Aki Broom was my great grandfather. He had three brothers: William, John N., Augustus (Pinkney). His father was Jesse E. Broom. Jesse's wife was Sarah Elizabeth McCoy.
James was born in Anderson County, South Carolina. I have reached a dead end with Jesse. I think he may have died in the Civil War because his children are listed with a Sally and John Carpenter in DeSoto, Mississippi in the 1870 Census. I have been unable to find a marriage license to prove that Sally is really a nickname for Sarah. His oldest Brother John N. is married to Indiana and has a son in the same census. If anyone can take me further, I would appreciate it. I am trying to give my father his roots as a gift. He is James' youngest son George Franklin Broome's (b:1903) son.

Twitmas,

Who are the couple in the photo attached to your posting (to this Broome message board) of 7 Jun 2011 3:38AM GMT? When were these people born & where were they living & what is the Broome lineage of the one who is a Broome?

I wish you would share your email address. I live on some of the land that my 3 greats grandfather Wm. Broom owned when he died in 1826. My mom was a Broom. I think we could work out what set of Broom/es everyone belonged to, if the unconnected sets of Broomes would do their Y-DNA. I did the Y-DNA of my 1st cousin, Furman Broom III to get what sets of Broomes I am kin to.

I am James W. Green III / 285 Agnew Road / Winnsboro SC 29180 / 803-635-9236 / BroomDNA@Juno.Com
