It seems that most of the Broomhead connections i have seen are from Yorkshire/Lancs. Derbyshire is a little closer to Nottingham where our family are from. Interested in the Little John story(assuming it's the Robin Hood/
Little John?!)

Hi Duncan,

Sorry only just checked my messages. This maybe of interest. My grandmother was called Lavinia and she had a sister called Nellie and i'm almost certain her surnames was Rhodes, also Glayds rings a bell to. My Grandmother married Matthew Broomhead. Both my Grandmother and Nellie lived not far from each other in Wyke, and I remember when i was little we used to and visit Nellie, however I was sure Nellie had diabetes and passed away years ago actually before my grandmother so this could just be co-incidentatal that some of names are the same. Do you know if Nellie had another sister called Lavinia? I am certian of the names Nellie, Glydys and Rhodes these are all familiar, however Broomhead is my Grandfathers surname and therefore Nellie and Gladys would be on my grandmothers side not grandfathers, so wouldn't be Broomhead, thats the only thing that makes me think these are not the same people. If you have anymore information it wold be appreciated.

Many Thanks

Lynnette

Hi Lynette,
afraid I have no contacts from anywhere near Ilkley.
Nice part of the world and all that, but a long way from Sheffield which is where my family before WW1 were, and the home of Broomhead.

If you know your father or grand-father's date-of-birth, then I suggest you order a copy of their Birth Certs to give you proven information to start your search. Censuses (1911, 1901, etc backwards) are then the most informative.

If you don't know their DOBs, then their Death or Marriage Certificates will help confirm that. All Certs are £7.

I'm in south Manchester and happy to give a little help. Good luck !

Mike Broomhead

My dad was called Kenneth Matthew Broomhead, born Ilkley Moor, Yorkshire. I am not sure if they feature in your family tree? I cannot provide more history as they have both passed away but I'm interested in finding out more about my family tree.
Thanks
Lynnette from Warrington, Cheshire
Hi Mike

Thanks - that was very interesting, especially your connection with the fox family. My grandmother - Mary Elliott, who married percy Twigg, was the daughter of George Lindsay Elliott, son of Elizabeth Elliott (father unknown). Elizabeths parents were George Elliott and Mary Ann Sarson. George Elliott's parents were William Elliot and Ester Fox, who I believe was a sister of your Susannah! I have spent quite a lot of time looking at the Elliotts recently. My email address is katerenton@gmail.com. Perhaps we could exchange info on the Broomheads/Foxes etc.

Kate

Hi Kate,
I believe John b1816 was the son of John (b1791) & Ann Marsen. His father was John (b? married Sarah Willis) ; his father John (b1726 married Goodith Unwin).

This family is very well documented - for example "Tree In the Valley" by Murial Hall and "More of Mayfield Valley" by Elizabeth Perkins ; also I found this link :
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/c/l/a/Adrian-Clar...

Unfortunately they are not my DIRECT ancestors but I do have a very indirect link.

A brother of John (b1816) was Thomas (b1824) who married Susannah Fox and had 10 children raised in the Rivlin Valley. You can see photos of them in the above Book.

Susannah Fox's parents were George Fox & Christiana Hinchliff (married Sheffield 1802). George's sister was Martha Fox (b1788 Sheffield). Martha Fox married a George Broomhead and I am directly descended from them.

However I've found no link between George Broomhead and his nephew-in-law, John Broomhead: they seem to be from unconnected Broomhead families.

FWIW, I believe my line lived west of Sheffield from 1806; before that in Hathersage; and before 1715 in Bretton near Eyam not far south from Hathersage. There is a possibility that Henry b1606 in Bradfield (Yorkshire, NW of Sheffield: the home of 'Broomhead' Hall/Reservoir/Moor) moved to Bradwell/Hope then Bretton in Derbyshire in which case I have a link as far back as possible. However I cannot prove that to a high degree of certainty.

Hope this is clear, and happy to correspond more. By the way my e-mail address is on my profile here.

best wishes - Mike Broomhead (Manchester).

Hi Mike

Read lots of your posts on ancestry re the Broomheads. I am just beginning to look at the Broomheads in my tree. My grandfather, Percy Twigg was the son of Walter Twigg and Mary Ann Hutchinson (all born Sheffield). From what we know, Mary Ann was the daughter of Joseph Hutchinson and Ann Broomhead (b.1849) and Ann was the duaghter of John Broomhead (b.1816) and Elizabeth Harrison (1822-1905). I really dont know much about the family other than that. Are these the same Broomheads as you have?

Kate

Kelly,
look on a Map service (Google, Bing, etc) for BROOMHEAD RESERVOIR.

You'll see it's almost 20 miles NW of Sheffield. That, and the 10 miles or so to the south of it are BRADFIELD PARISH.

BRADFIELD is where Broomheads originate from, and you can find their Parish Registers surviving back to early 1500s, Queen Eliz time, which is unusually early for PRs.

There's also a Broomhead Moor there, and used to be a Broomhead Hall (immediately West of the Reservoir).

I have tenatively traced my ancestors back to Bradfield but the line includes one assumption I'm confident of, and one that I'm uncertain of.

Before Victorian times, Broomheads had moved a fair bit - other than North Derbyshire & Sheffield, the most common areas were south Lancashire and Lincolnshire. But you'll also find some strays as far as Bedfordshire & Isle of Man.

Actually I should draw your attention to the mass exodus from BRADFIELD around the time of the Civil Wars. Perhaps they were Catholics and forced to move from a Parliamentarian area for example (which Sheffield was). For the 83 years 1559-1642, Bradfield PR has 262 events with Broomheads. For the 193 years 1643-1835 there are 44 !

So Bradfield (in the old county of Hallamshire) it is, with several Broomhead placenames.

bestest - Mike Broomhead (Manchester)

His daughter, Beatrice Broomhead ( born 1883 in Sheffield) married Benjamin Wildsmith, the great grandson of Elizabeth Hoyland (born 1821 Hallam, Sheffield). She was an ancestor of mine. Incidentally I believe that Edwin Broomhead was born in Knonchley, Stoke, Hope Valley, Derbyshire.

Oh well it was worth a try! Hope that you find all your Broomhead family one day Mike. You would think with a name like Broomhead it wouldn't be too hard lol but as we know there are brick walls at every turn it seems in our Family Trees.

Best wishes,

Ann Brown Ritchie

Hi Ann,
sorry to say that SAVAGE, SAYLES, and ELLIS do not appear in my line.

Unfortunately I've found that I'm not directly connected with many BROOMHEADs of Sheffield of that time -- I have a 'skinny' line which doesn't seem to join with any of the other families of the area, of which there were many.

Before 1800 my family lived in HATHERSAGE; before 1700 in EYAM/BRADWELL (near Hope) -- so don't have the strongest connections with Sheffield.

best wishes - Mike Broomhead

Hi Mike,

I know that it has been several years since you posted but my Mother's family on her Maternal side have the name Broomhead in their line. They are from Eckington, Rotherham, and Sheffield. My Great Great Grandmother was Mary Broomhead Savage (1848 -1911). She married Joseph Savage. Her parents were James Broomhead (1827-1899) and his wife Elizabeth Sayles Broomhead (1828 - 1897). James' Father was William Broomhead and his Mother, Hannah aka Ann Ellis Broomhead. The name Ellis appeared as a first name in three later generations and after finding out Hannah Ellis' Surname I finally realized why, it was a Family Name.

Does any of this sound familiar to your Broomhead line?

Ann Ritchie

hi Kenneth,
in summary of my connection with the Broomhead Graves near 'Little John' at Hathersage:

I'm a direct descendant of John Broomhead & Mary Bland who married in Hathersage on 28 Feb 1714. They had NINE children, the 7th being William b1737 who married Mary HALLAM in Hathersage on 24 Jun 1765.

William & Mary's first child, Thomas b1765 (30 Nov),is the eldest of 2 of the Graves, with his wife Sarah (Ibbotson). One Grave is of his children, except his son Henry (b1795) who has another Grave with HIS children.

So the deceased families are: Thomas, Sarah, Mary Betty, William, Ann, Robert, Hannah Ruth, Sarah ; then Henry, Sarah, Elizabeth, Thomas, Mary, Clarissa Emma.

There are 2 other Broomhead Graves but I've not identified any relationship with them.

I would be very interested to make a private connection with you (e-mail below & on profile) if you are related to the above. Indeed I'd also be interested to know more of the other Broomhead families in the other 2 Graves.

best wishes,
Mike Broomhead (Manchester)
aroundM21 at yahoo co uk
Hi Mike
I was trawling through the web and came across an enquiry from you. I have not researched the Broomhead connection much but my records tell me that Alice Broomhead who was born about 1670 and died on 16 Oct 1716 was the daughetr of John Broomhead. She married on 16 October 1689 in Aston Yorks the Rev George Mompesson who was the son of the famous Rev William Mompesson and Catherine Carr 9of plague fame in Eyam. I have quite a bit on the Mompessons and wonder if you have anything on the ancestors of Alice Broomhead. Getting my information has been compromised by the loss of my laptop and I am slowly loading all my info manually onto a new laptop.
Regards
David Rhys in Devon

my fathers name was stanley broomhead of stockport too. i was born 15.7.1953. the youngest of his children i think! and probably the only girl. sadly he died about 1989. i did not really know him - my mother was not his wife. however i am now in contact regularly with his brother roy. we both live in stockport. my father had three sons with his wife who know of my existence but have not contacted me possibly because i have only been in touch with uncle roy for the past 3 years and too much time has gone by. it is therefore possible that we are half-brother and half-sister.

Hi Mike!
I am interested in any information regarding my Grandmother and her family. Her name was Sarah Ann Broomhead. She was from Fairfield, Buxton, Derbyshire. My Father William Henry Parnell was a twin who was given to the Barnardo home when he was 2 months old and was sent to Canada at the age of 9 in 1921. My Grandfather also William Henry Parnell passed away 2 months before my Father was born. My Father's twin sister was Jane E Parnell and they had a sister two years older-Margaret Parnell. My great grand mother was Mary Ellen Broomhead. I have no information on either my Grandmothers husband or my Great Grandmothers husband.
My Grandfather-William Henry Parnell was born 1882 and died 1911.
Sarah Ann Broomhead-my Grandmother was born around 1885and her Mother- Mary Ellen Broomhead was born around 1863. That is the only information that I have at this time but would love to have anything further that you could share.

Thank you so much
Joan Hull
joanhull@sympatico.ca

Broomheads of Bradfied - Civil War

I'm sure many people know the Broomhead area, including the Moor and Hall (since demolished), is North-West of Sheffield, just south of Stocksbridge and Bolsterstone.

Possibly - theoretically - all 'Broomhead' families originate from this area which fell into BRADFIELD Parish.

Having traced my lineage back to the Hope area (confusingly, Bradwell), I've reached the end of those Parish Reigsters.

There is a speculative match for my man from BRADFIELD who seems to move from that area (ie no Marriage or Death found) so could be the same who appears in Hope (with no Birth from there).

Fortunately the BRADFIELD PRs are very extensive, reaching back to 1559 - excellent fortune.

It seems around 10-20% of the BRADFIELD population before the Civil War was called Broomhead -- the number of Broomhead entries for the 83 years between 1559-1642, were 262. For the 193 years between 1642-1835, they were 44.

There are a few cases where Broomheads in nearby Parishes could be those born in BRADFIELD (impossible to prove as the other Parishes have no surviving Records). But an 'exodus' from the BRADFIELD area is certainly a possibility.

I would be interested in hearing from anyone with facts or thoughts related to this.

best wishes - Mike Broomhead, Manchester.

-----------------------------------------

Related article published in the Guardian :

“Broomhead Hall saw some excitement in the civil war, when the wife of Christopher Wilson (who inherited the estate in 1622) successfully held out against "a small body of the King's soldiers" while her husband was absent on service with a Roundhead force. The Royalists occupied the estate in 1642 but were besieged by Roundheads and, after six weeks, Cromwell's troops evicted them "with considerable damage resulting". Broomhead Hall is no more but the Rimington-Wilsons still own this grand upland estate.”
Thanks for your reply. By your reply your mother Gail is the sister to Alfred III, John, Gloria and Dale Broomhead, right?? If right, your mother's sister Gloria Broomhead was married to Matthew Gorman Jr. My wife is the granddaughter of Gloria. She was born in 1922 in Cohoes and is still in fact alive...Matthew her husband died in 1999.
So I am excited to learn about the descendants of Alfred and Victoria Suprenant. Can you tell me the offspring of Alfred and Victoria's children?? As for La Favre, Victoria's father Peter married a woman Emila La Favre...by my records she was born in New York in 1858 but Peter her husband was french canadian (indian?)
My wife Kathleen is the daughter of Larry and Sharon Gorman. Larry is the son of Gloria Broomhead Gorman and brother of Vicki Gorman Coonradt.

Any help in connecting me with Sharon to fill in the gaps will be appreciated. Thanks

Sandy
She died about 29 years ago she was my aunt.
she was Alfred Broomhead Jr's daughter. My mother is Gail Broomhead and uncle is Al Broomhead III. All from Cohoes.
My cousin Sharon Broomhead is our family's historian.
She would know Sarah Jane's last name. I know there were Lafavre's in there somewhere on my grandfathers maternal side. Sharon Broomhead is in Cohoes also. Prob. in the phonebook under John Broomhead(uncle) or lois Broomhead.
Victoria Supernaut was my Grandfathers mother or grandmother I dont remember. My cousin Vicki Broomhead is named after her. I also have a cousin SarahJane named after Sarah J.If I can find out anything else fron Sharon I will reply. My grandfather's great grandmother's last name was Lafavre she was a french canadian Indian.
Hi ...

I have an Elizabeth b1831 but parents are Thomas & Margaret (nee Morton). Born in Eyam.
I have 3 Benjamins but none have a daughter called Elizabeth. I don't believe any of my Benjamins had children in 1830s (tho I don't know what happened to the one b1783 in Hathersage).

Mike Broomhead
