Dennis Brophy was my Great X4 Grandfather. He was born December 2, 1839. On April 5, 1863 he married Mary Rodgers who died at the age of 66 years 7 months on Mar 15, 1904. Dennis Died Jan 1, 1912. His parents were John and Mary Brophy. John married two women named Mary but I am unsure of their last names. Dennis had eight children with Mary Rodgers. Mary Anne(died at approximately age 4), Kathryn Helena (Kate), John Thomas (Jack), Mary Anne (Mollie who was born after the first Mary Anne died), Elizabeth Jane (Lizzie), Julia, Honora (Nora), and Matthew William. John Thomas was the only child not to marry. I have some information on the rest of the family if you are interested in any of Dennis's grandchildren and so forth.

My daughter sent me an e-mail from Meggie Brophy regarding John Brophy who was born in Tipperary on December 25, 1823. My records indicate he came to America with his brother Tom but me or my family were never able to locate any information about Tom. John Brophy was my great grand-father. After arriving in the USA John went to Syracuse, New York, where his first child, PatrickF. was born. His second child, Mary A. was born in Pike County, Missouri,Annie R. and James Henry (my grandfather) were born in Louisiana, Missouri. I would love to hear from you and share more information about the family and learn more about Tom and his descendants. I just moved to Chicago, Illinois to live with my oldest daughterm and I hope to hear from you soon. She and her husband are going to London in September and plan on going to Ireland. Where do you live? Please keep in touch.
Betty Bartolac happyduck4@comcast.net

Hi, Meggie,

My husband's ancestors are Thomas Brophy and Bridget O'Connell Logan. How are you related? I assume you are a descendant of Leo and Margaret Brophy in Riverside, Iowa? I don't have you in the family tree, so am unsure where you fit :-) My husband is a descendant of Leo's sister, Mary Agnes (Brophy) Harbeck.

We hadn't heard that Thomas was separated from his family when they arrived in New York ... that puts another spin on my research. Can you tell me who the source of this information is? Does that mean Thomas' parents travelled to NY with him? Or would it just be his siblings?

I am also trying to find out where in county Tipperary Thomas is from, with no luck, especially since the 1841 Ireland census was mostly lost to fire. Bridget is said to have come from county Galway...

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,
Donna Harbeck

dt_education@yahoo.com
Hi Melissa,

My name is Meggie Brophy and I was looking on rootsweb.com when I saw your post about John Brophy who was born in Tipperary county in 1823. My third great grandfather, Thomas Brophy, was born in Tipperary Co., Ireland somewhere between 1815-1820. We know he immigrated to the United States from Tipperary somewhere between 1845 to the early 1850s. However we know nothing of his family whom he immigrated with because he was seperated at the docks in New York City. Thomas then moved breifly to New Jersey where he married Bridget O'Connell Logan. They then moved to Scott County Iowa in the 1850s to farm. I was just wondering if there was any connection there because the story could fit. I would love to hear from you sometime!

Thanks, Meggie Brophy

I am also searching for Tipperary Brophys.

My husband's great-great grandfather was Thomas Brophy, born about 1814 in County Tipperary. We do not know which town... He immigrated to USA at New York abt 1853, lived in New Jersey, married Bridget Logan (nee O'Connell) in New Jersey, then moved to Scott County, Iowa. Three children were born in New Jersey, Edward, Cecile and one child who died in childbirth (do not know the name). Bridget also had one son from her first marriage who immigrated with her in abt. 1851 to New York. His name was Michael Logan. Bridget and Michael were said to be from County Galway.

Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

Donna

Hi! We are cousins!!! My father is Vince Brophy...He didn't talk much about where the family came from... I've been trying to research the family and it's difficult. I have a birth record for Michael Brophy 1879,Newfoundland...Our grandmother, Catherine Dwyer also born in newfoundland- her father was Captain Bill Dwyer! Her ancestry is easier to document--I've been looking at a newfoundland geneaology website which gives more info than ancestry.com...What I'm trying to figure out is when did the Brophy's arrive in Newfoundland and from where....on a 1911(?) census on ancestry.com, it says that Mike and Catherine arrived in Nova Scotia in 1900 and it says they are Irish.

Ruth Theresa Brophy, 96,born.in Pittsburgh, to John and Mary Ann (Spinnenweber) Karrenbauer.

Ruth T. Brophy
La Grande, Ore.

Ruth Theresa Brophy, 96,
died peacefully Saturday,
Jan. 1, 2011, in La Grande, Ore., amidst family and friends. Ruth was born Sept. 17, 1914, in Pittsburgh, to John and Mary Ann (Spinnenweber) Karrenbauer. Ruth married Joseph E. Brophy July 4, 1939. The couple made their home and raised their family in Pittsburgh. In 1965, Ruth returned to school to earn her LPN. Subsequent to achieving her goal, she worked for eight years in Pittsburgh area hospitals and care centers. In 1973, she moved to Tucson, Ariz., and spent the next two decades living in Arizona and California, where she continued her career until retiring in her seventies. In 1991, Ruth moved to Oregon to live with her daughter's family in La Grande. In La Grande, she found fulfillment in helping raise her grandchildren, being a member of Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church, where she participated in the Women's Altar Society as a member of St. Bernadette's Circle and working as a hospice volunteer. Her work with hospice was central to her life and she continued in this care giving role into her nineties. Ruth took great delight in travel and being with family. During her years in the Southwest, she loved introducing her children, grandchildren and other family members to the beauty of the desert, the Grand Canyon and the cultures of the region. She also looked forward to returning to Pennsylvania each year to visit her grandchildren and catch up with life-long friends. She was grateful for the opportunities to celebrate both her eightieth and ninetieth birthdays with family and friends in her hometown of Pittsburgh as well as in her adopted city of La Grande. Ruth is survived by her sister, Sister Anna Maria Karrenbauer, of Allison Park; her children and their spouses, Joseph T. and Anita Brophy, of Tucson, David J. Brophy, of Pittsburgh, and Anna Maria and Dwight Dill, of La Grande; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe; and her youngest son, Timothy G. Brophy. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in TIMOTHY K. SLATER FUNERAL SERVICES INC., 425 Brownsville Road, Mt. Oliver, Pittsburgh, PA 15210, 412-381-3337. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. Wendelin Church.

St. Wendelin Church. "
I see Minnie H Wobshall on a 1900 census. (Daughter of Ernest/Mary) So the Matthew you're talking about must(?) have been son of Sarah/John Patrick! The one who married and then "ran away"? That would explain not finding him on any census!

Here's what I have:
Sarah, daughter of Mathew/Katherine (Bulger) b. 1870, m. 1886, d. 1901. She married John Patrick Cummings 9-Mar 1886, Rock County, WI. He died in a tragic construction accident in 1903.
Their boys (Matthew & William) were then raised by Lizzie & Charlie Cummings (brother/sister). William grew up and married Hildegard Reuther. Matthew married (?) then ran away possibly to Canada, possibly Manitoba.
Sarah's brothers are John (b. 1860) & James (b. 1861). John married a Sarah (b. 1864) so it's been somewhat confusing keeping the two Sarah Brophy's straight! Wobshall is a new name to me :-)
sagewood1@yahoo.com

Dear Sagewood,

Sorry, I haven't worked on the family tree in awhile & had to look back at some of the info I have. My fiancee is the great grandson of Matthew Cummings & Minnie Wobshall. I have info on Sarah Brophy daughter of Matthew & Katherine Bulger on a 1860's census which has her listed as 3 years old which would put her DOB at abt 1857 (you have her DOB as 1870 ?)I have her siblings as John & Jane (female on 1870 census). I have same marriage info for Sarah & John Cummings. I have not been able to find any cenus info for them after the marriage (???) thus I have no info on any of Matthew's siblings etc. I can't even find a census with Matthew & Minnie after they were married. Any help or history on the family you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Very confused. I have thomas in the Linda, Yuba Co., Cal census in 1860, with all the family but Ellen. But I have some information that he died in Idaho in 1862 or 1869. Mary R., my ggg grandmother, would have been born on the oregon trail. Did he return with his family to Idaho? I know that his wife married George Canon in oregon 1870 and returned to Cal.

Hey Jacqui,
I'm tracing my Brophy lineage too.I just recently was provided some info on a Thomas Francis Brophy 1923 Canada-1953 Pittsburgh...he died here in Pittsburgh PA, where I reside. My Brophy lineage goes back to Thomas Brophy (1825 Ire,1880 US ) and his wife Mary Egan. They first appear on US census in 1850 in Massachusettes. My grandmother Olive Brophy was Thomas Brophy's great grand-daughter.

The THOMAS F. BROPHY 1923-1953 I'm reviewing right now came to me from a cousin of a cousin. My cousin, Tom Sorce(deceased)(his mom was a Brophy,my great aunt),has a cousin on his dad's side named Anne Sorce. She recently contacted me about finding a Mass card for TF Brophy. No question TF Brophy is a distant cousin of mine.Finding the connection is what im trying to do now. So,take a look at my trees, both the Tenney and Brophy 2 trees.Maybe we can find some connections to link...thanks

Florence is the daughter of Joseph and Huldah A. (Allen) Hannum. The simplest summary comes from Joseph's obit:
OBIT: "The Soldier (KS) Clipper, Wednesday, 1 Nov 1911
Joseph Hannum
Born Mch 11, 1815, Died Oct. 25 1911
Joseph Hannum was born in Columbiana County, Ohio, March 13, 1815. Died in Soldier, Kansas, Octoer 25, 1911, aged 96 years, 7 months and 12 days.
For almost 40 years he lived in Ohio. In 1835 he was united in marrieage to Miss Dianna Clark. Nine children were born to this union, but two survive their father, Mrs. Charles Hungerford of Soldier and G. W. Hannum of Corning.
In 1852 he moved with his family to Iowa. Here in 1854 his wife died. In 1859 he moved to Kansas settling south of America City, and shortly after moved to what is known as Hannum farm.
In the fall of 1861he was married to Miss Hulda Allen, five children were born to this marriage all of whom survive, Mrs. F. M. Hannum, Mrs. John Brophy, Mrs. Bruce Walters, Mrs. Frank Stewart and Mrs. Robert Booth. In 1870 his second wife died, leaving him with a family of small children. In 1872 he married Mrs. Elizabeth Albaugh. Her death some three years ago is fresh in the memory of our people."
The obit continues with the usual puff.

Kester,
I am descended from Michael Brophy and Helen Phelen.
If you travel to Templeorum Church in Co. Kilkenny and look at the high cross on the left as you enter the main gate you can read all about James William and Michael who "died in America".The MOH recipient in Arizona is probably related to us,as Jim Brophy from Montana visits that side of the family. You can contact me if you wish, sorry to disappoint you as Brophy College founder is not related to us.
seamus Brophy
