Obit of Cornelius Brosnahan 1925

From the Chatsworth Plaindealer
Chatsworth,Livingston,Illinois

CORNELIUS BROSNAHAN
MAY 14, 1925

Cornelius Brosnahan died at his home in this city Sunday evening at about six o'clock at the age of 87 years.
He had been gradually declining in health for some time, due principally of age and a weakened heart, but had been bedfast only about two weeks. He was conscious almost to the end.
Funeral services were held in SS. Peter & Paul's church Monday forenoon at 9:30, services being conducted by his pastor, Rev. Father Hearn. Burial was in St. Patrick's cemetery.
Mr. Brosnahan was born at Kanturk, county of Cork, Ireland, in the year 1838, and with his wife came to the United States in 1866, locating in Champaign county. Mr. Brosnahan spent almost his entire life after coming to this country in the employ of the Illinois Central Railroad. He began working as a section hand at Champaign and later was promoted to a foremanship. In 1880 he was transferred to Chatsworth and for forty years served in that capacity. Nearly all of this time he was stationed at Chatsworth except for a short time at Risk.
Had Mr. Brosnahan lived until May 26 the couple could have celebrated sixty years of happy married life.
Of the eleven children born to Mr. and Mrs. Brosnahan nine are still living and attended the funeral of their father. The five boys were all schooled in railroading under their father and while two of them gave up railroading for other vocations, this schooling was of much value to them. Mr. Brosnahan was of that old school of conscientious workmen who believed in putting in all the energy and skill he had for his employers. No night was too dark or rainy for him to leave his bed, and usually with one of his boys, and patrol his six miles of tracks to see that they were safe for a train to pass over. He did this not once but every time that occasion demanded and when the time came for him to retire from the active duties of life he was retired on a comfortable pension by the Illinois Central railroad and with this competence and the companionship of a good wife and the esteem and love of their children this fine couple have journeyed down the evening of life respected by everyone who knew them. Courteous, kind and considerate, he leave a cherished heritage to his companion and children.
The surviving children are: John, cashier of the Commercial National Bank, of Chatsworth; Mrs. John A. Kerrins, of Chatsworth; Mrs. Thomas Shear, of Onarga; James, a foreman for the Illinois Central at Champaign; Mrs. William Bond, of Pontiac; Thomas, a supervisor for the I.C. at Mattoon; Mrs. Paul Williams, of Beatrice, Nebraska; Charles, of Bloomington, and Cornelius, of Chicago.
Sally, no problem with the "Thomas", a lot of information on the census is incorrect. You had asked about birth certificates for the Brosnahan's/Toone's - I don't have much on that - most of the research done on the Toone's was done by a Toone cousin of mine and the rest was through information gathered on the Internet. I will check my files, though, to see if I have any birth certificates and get back to you. I also have some photos of Brosnahan/Toone gatherings, but unfortunately my scanner/printer doesn't work well enough to email or make copies, but I will also work on that and get back to you.

Thanks, Fran

Fran,

I just received a copy of Mary Bertha Brosnahan's birth certificate today. It lists her father as Timothy A. Brosnahan. I believe the name Thomas, I previously told you about, was an error on the 1920 Census. That's the only place it's listed as Thomas. I'll e-mail you a copy of the birth certificate.

Sally

Thanks Fran, for all the information. It is very helpful. My friend is Bernadette O'Brien, daughter of Terry & Patricia O'Brien. If you don't mind, I may take you up on the offer for additional information at a later date. Do you happen to have any birth or death certificates for Timothy & Louisa, Frederick & Louisa, or anyone else in that line? I put in a request to go research at the Office of Records but have not heard back from them yet. I also will probably go to the cemeteries you mentioned to take pictures of any headstones I can find. Would you happen to have any details on where they are located in the cemetery? Any little bit helps, but I will research it myself if you don't. Of course, I can forward anything I find to you if you'd like. Thanks again for all your help. Let me know if I can help with anything too.
Thanks,
Sally

Hi Sally,

Yes, indeed, this is the correct Timothy Brosnahan and Louisa Toone. I didn't know who Timothy's (thanks for adding the Thomas to his name) parents were.

Thomas Timothy Brosnahan married into the Toone family of Washington, DC. The Toone's are a large family with zillions of descendents, most all of them live in the DC/MD/VA area. I guess I would be the great-niece of Louisa.

His wife, Louisa "Lula" Jane Toone was b Aug 1876 in DC and died at Sibley Hospital in 1964. She married Timothy about 1895 and they had 5 daughters. They are both buried at Mt Olivet Cemetery in the D.C. area, and they lived at one time, in Hillcrest Heights, MD.

Timothy was a bartender who died in 1927 in the DC area. At one point in 1920, Louisa's mother lived with them.

Louisa was the daughter of Frederick Toone, who emigrated to America in 1859. He was born in Quorndon, Leicestershire, England in 1840 and died in 1910 in DC. Frederick's parents were William Toon (b 1796, d 1858) and Elizabeth Adcock (1795-1878), both of Quorn, England. Frederick had a number of brothers and sisters. Frederick married Louisa Jane Barrett of Washington, DC. Frederick and Louisa are my great-great grandparents. Frederick & Louisa Barrett are buried at Congressional in DC.

If you are interested in looking up the Toone ancestors, there is a very good website of genealogy, census, and local history for Quorndon, Leicestershire, Eng. I have a lot of dates and stuff for the Toone's.

Timothy & Louisa's daughters were:

Nora Louise (b 1899)
Margaret M (1901-1990), who married Charles H Weber (1906-1983) - their child is Mildred W Weber (b 1927), who married a Keen - their dau is Katharine Keen
Edna M (b 1905 d 1973)
Emma Irene (went by Irene) b 1907
Mary Bertha (b 1914), married John Francis Murphy (b 1910) - their children are Patricia Ellen Murphy (b 1935), marr George T O'Brien; and Michael Timothy Murphy (1942-2006)

I hope this information is helpful to you - by all means let me know if you would like additional information

Fran Davis
franniedavis@verizon.net

Hello Fran,

I have just started researching the Brosnahan family last week for a Brosnahan descendent. I have worked my way up to Thomas Timothy Brosnahan (b Jun 1869, d Betw 1920 - 1930 DC). His wife is listed as Louisa (b Aug 1876, d Aft 1930 DC). Timothy's father is Michael Bresnahan (b Abt 1832 or 1834 Ireland) who was married to Honora (b Abt 1842 Ireland). Do you think this is the Timothy Brosnahan you're looking for? What kind of information do you have on Louisa Jane Toone? Could you share that with me? Hope this helps.

Sally

Obit of Thomas Brosnahan 1946

From the Chatsworth Plaindealer
Chatsworth,Livingston,Illinois

THOMAS BROSNAHAN
AUGUST 1, 1946

Thomas J. Brosnahan, a track supervisor for the Illinois Central railroad, died at a hospital in Sullivan, Indiana, Tuesday (July 30) night at 11 o'clock, following a cerebral hemorrhage and stroke suffered at 10 o'clock Friday forenoon about two miles from Sullivan. He was on a train with a rail detector when he was stricken, and was taken at once to the hospital. He rallied Sunday but later suffered another stroke which caused his death.

LIVED AT PALESTINE
Mr. and Mrs. Brosnahan resided in Palestine, Illinois, but were former Chatsworth people, Mrs. Brosnahan being the former Kathryn Knittles. They had two daughters, one an infant, died in 1909, and the other, Katharyn, was killed in an accident in 1930. Both are buried in the Chatsworth cemetery, and at least every Memorial Day the graves have been lavishly decorated with beautiful flowers.

BURIAL IN CHATSWORTH
Funeral services will be held in Robinson, Illinois, Friday forenoon at 9 o'clock, after which the body will be brought to Chatsworth for burial in the Chatsworth cemetery at 3 p.m.
Surviving are four sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Bonn, Pontiac; Mrs. Mary Williams, California; Mrs. Josephine Shear, Onarga; and Mrs. Margaret Kerrins, Springfield; three brothers, James, of Kankakee, Cornlius, of Chicago, and Charles, whose address is not known.
Deceased had been an employee of the Illinois Central railroad practically all his life, as a track laborer, section forman, roadmaster and road supervisor. He had been located at Palestine for the past few years and with Mrs. Brosnahan made frequent visits to their old home town, Chatsworth.
Hi there.

I have just started doing some research into my Brosnahan heritage. I was born in Gisborne, New Zealand. My maternal grandmother was Eileen Mary Brosnahan (married name Thorstenson). She died around 25 years ago. My mother is Maureen Shirley Jones (nee Thorstenson) she is still alive and I am trying to trace my heritage back to spain. I was told we have spanish decendants. All I know about her grand father is that he was born in County Cork, Ireland and his name was James. He arrived in NZ at the age of 2. We know there was an Ernie (an uncle)who was a Lawyer and had a business in Gisborne, NZ. His father was Joseph and there was a Mary who was his sister. This is all I know at this stage. As I said, I have only just started to do some research and am waiting for a birth certificate for James to find out more.

Hi Joyce,

I'm Steve Burgess, the youngest of Yvonne Rand's 3 brothers (but still 2 years her senior) – I'm 53. I live in Santa Maria, CA. Yvonne (who recently moved back to CA – Sacramento – from Maine) forwarded to me the exciting and useful info regarding our common close ancestors.

I remember Uncle Bert (your Grandfather Albert) and Uncle Fred (great uncle to us both) very well and very fondly. I met Uncle Fred when I was 2, when I traveled with my parents to MA for my Grandfather George's funeral, I believe. That would have been 1957 or 1958. I remember Uncle Fred handing me a little musical scottie dog through the window of the car as we were leaving. That doggie was the last of my stuffed animals to be "alive" – all the rest had become just toys earlier. Uncle Fred died when I was 7, and while I was sad, my brother John was devastated.

I remember visiting Uncle Bert when I was about 15 and he was as sharp as anything, had a full head of hair (unlike me currently!) and was as up on California politics as I was!

I was in MA this past fall & saw Howard Crowell, my great Aunt Ella's son – also first cousin to my dad, Frederick. Aunt Ella was my Nana Eva – Genevieve Kerrigan/Burgess's sister.

Robert Burgess, who with his wife Lydia (Almanza) Burgess, visited your parents in 1998, is my father's youngest brother, so also your first cousin.

My father is now 86, is doing fairly well for someone with Parkinson's Disease, and is living in Oceanside, CA – just north of San Diego. They live just a couple of miles from my oldest sister, (Joan) Cheryl McGlocklin. My mom, Joan Frost (her adoptive name - her birth name was Harriet Beatrice Walsh), is still with him as well, after 62 years of marriage. I'll be happy to tell you about this branch of the family. But in brief:

John & George were my dad's two oldest brothers. John was killed in the Korean War and George Burgess is doing fine, in San Dimas, CA – never married & has no kids.
William is healthy, married, and living in Culver City, CA with his wife Darlene. Never had kids.
James is healthy, married, and living in San Pedro, CA with is wife Barabara. They had two kids, Michael and Katherine, both of whom had 2 kids (I'm pretty sure).
Robert is recovering from a stroke, but doing pretty well, otherwise healthy, and married to Lydia, living in San Dimas, CA. I last saw them just a couple of months ago. They have 3 kids – Isabel (1 son), Eileen (1 daughter), & Eric (one of each).
Genevieve is widowed (her husband was Kelmer Moll), healthy & living in San Dimas, CA. Everyone I know agrees that Aunt Genny has the world's best and most infective laugh. Uncle George, who had been living with Bill & Darlene for many years, just moved in with Genny. Genny & Kel never had children.
Aunt Eleanor passed about 5 years ago. She and her husband Herbert Rollo (who passed about 10-12 years ago) had two sons, Herbert (Pete) and Robert, and one daughter Genevieve (Dolly). They have about 4 kids between them. Pete does a lot of genealogical work and I'll pass your note on to him. His email address is prollo@pacbell.net
There was one more brother who did not survive infancy - that must have been Albert.

My folks had 7 children. Frederick Joseph Burgess, Joan Cheryl McGlocklin, Janet Elaine Fogarty, John Michael Burgess, Steven Gary Burgess (that's me), Yvonne Denise Rand, and Renee Josephine Burgess. Fred's got one son, Cheryl has two sons (one with 3 kids & one with 2), and a daughter (with 2 kids). Janet has one son. John has a son and a daughter (who has 2 children), I have 3 boys, Yvonne has 3 boys, & Renee has no kids.
Whew!!!

There's a little mini video interview I did with my dad on YouTube here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QK6TpoTPSis&feature=chann...
I hope to get more of his stories up soon.

I was back in Ireland about 10 years ago & hope to go again this year. I'll look up whatever cousins I can find this time. Last time, I didn't really have time. We (my wife Barbara & our youngest son, Chris) will almost certainly make it at least to Mass this year. Barbara's twin sister lives in Hatfield in Western Mass.

I would love to see a picture of the headstone, and would love to chat with you some time.

Slaínte!

~Steve

Hi. I just found the original query and replies this morning, I hope that this reply finds you. I am a great granddaughter of Margaret Brosnahan Burgess, the daughter of John Brosnahan and Margaret O’Mara and was born in Killarney, Kerry, Ireland May 1841 and died in the Dorchester section of Boston Massachusetts on May 12, 1941 of diabetes, which caused her to have a gangrenous right foot that was amputated 4 days before her death, according to her death certificate. Family lore said she was born in Castleisland, Kerry, Ireland. According to census records she originally came to the US in 1885. She married in Boston on Feb 8, 1892. She returned to Ireland sometime after 1906 with her family and returned to the US Sept 28, 1910 without her husband Albert Charles Burgess. He either returned at a different time or never returned because they never lived together again. He was born in England in March 1868. His parents’ names were John Burgess and Eliza Perry. They had at least 4 children, Albert Jr., (born June 5, 1892 Newton, MA and died June 17, 1989 in Quincy MA), Margaret, George, and Alfred. Their son Albert Jr. had 7 children, 5 of which lived to adulthood, the oldest was also Albert. I am his daughter. Her son George, who was married to Genevieve Kerrigan, had many children, one of those was another Albert who died in infancy and is buried with Margaret in the New Calgary Cemetery in Dorchester. Also buried in the same 2 plots are Margaret’s sister, Nora Brosnahan (who never married and also lived in the Boston area as an adult), and 2 baby boys that were my father Albert’s brothers. I have a picture of the headstone, which only lists Margaret and her sister Nora, that I would be happy to email to you if you would like. My email is jandjpickel@comcast.net and my name is Joyce Pickel. I hope to hear back from you.

Hi Yvonne. I just found the original query and replies this morning, I hope that this reply finds you. I am a great granddaughter of Margaret Brosnahan Burgess. She was indeed the daughter of John Brosnahan and Margaret O’Mara and was born in Killarney, Kerry, Ireland May 1841 and died in the Dorchester section of Boston Massachusetts on May 12, 1941 of diabetes, which caused her to have a gangrenous right foot that was amputated 4 days before her death, according to her death certificate. They had at least 4 children, Albert Jr., Margaret, George, and Alfred. My father was born in Dorchester on Sept 15, 1915 and was a first cousin of George’s son Frederick so you and I would be 2nd cousins. I knew that one branch of my grandfather’s family had moved to California and I have a picture of a Robert and Lydia Burgess that came to visit my parents in 1998. I’m not sure exactly how they are related. Maybe you know them. My father died March 17, 2002 of Parkinson’s and my mother is still alive, but failing. All my father’s siblings, and their spouses, have died. I have a younger brother Neil Burgess, who is married with 2 sons and lives in Massachusetts. I am married, have a daughter and son, and 5 grandchildren and we all live in Plymouth MA. My email is jandjpickel@comcast.net and my name is Joyce Pickel. I hope to hear back from you.

There is a John Bresnahan in my husband's family, who married to Hanorah Riley at Scared Heart church, Cambridge, Mass., 8 January 1874; witnesses were Jeremiah Bresnahan and Catherine McCarthy. This John Bresnahan was born about 1846 in Ireland, parents were named John and Mary. This was his second marriage, he was previously married in Ireland.

There was another John Brosnahan in Cambridge at the time.

I have not traced this family to Ireland. Your posting is old, but tell me if you still need any of the Cambridge VRs and church records, since I live in Boston.

Hi Nancy, My GGrandfather Married Mary Brosnahan on 30 Apr 1867. Mary was born 1839 and is in the 1850 Wv. Census. She was born in Ky, and both parents were from Ireland. There is a message posted out on the Clifton message board about George and Mary but they have her listed as Broslyhorn which is incorrect. My verification comes from my Uncle Buck (Leo T. Clifton) age 89 who used to stay with his Uncle Frank (Francis Daniel Clifton). Frank was the oldest son,,, then Theodore Clairmont Clifton was next who was my Grandfather.

Mary's mothers name was Grady I think and from I'm pretty sure Cork. I'm researching her on about a priority 5 :)
Buck seem to think her father was Patrick of which my middle name comes from.
Does this help any???

You know if this pans out,,,,,you may be a hillbilly or a redneck,,,HA!!!!!!!!

Thanks,
Dave Clifton

My g g great-grandfather's death certificate lists Mary Sheehan and James Brosnahan as his parents. Cornelius Brosnahan, their son, was born August 1838, he proudly claimed, in Cork. He emigrated 1865, wife (Mary Callahan) and son (John, an infant) emigrated the next year. They settled in Illinois where he worked for the Illinois Central Railroad and died in 1925, leaving 8 living children, having lost four. If anyone can connect me with James Brosnahan and Mary Sheehan, their marriage, their other children, .... I would be most grateful. Thank you!

Where have all the Brosnahan's gone??

My Grandmother, Honora {Nora} Brosnahan Brim was born in Knob Noster or Kansas City in 1884. Her Father was John Brosnahan, born in Ireland and Mother was Mary Lynch, born in Ohio. She married Walter Ernest Brim about 1905 and they moved to a farm in LaMonte, Mo. She died in Los Angeles in 1953 and Grandpa Brim, in Kansas City in 1949. My Mother, Frances Elizabeth Brim West, told me that the Brosnahan's pretty much ran Kansas City in the early days {??} but I can't believe that I can't reach any one of them that might be part of my family. HELP. Please contact me at: w.west@pioneer-net.com. I am sure that many of the Brosnahan's are buried in Knob Noster Cemetery but I can't get anyone to check it out.

Brosnahan's in Missouri

Mary Ellen: Your post sounds very promising and I am sure your Brosnahan's and mine are related. During my search, I kept coming up with Brosnahan/Connor but have not been able to tie them to Brosnahan/Lynch. John, Timothy and Daniel Brosnahan, all seemed to be related and I know we will find something soon. Have you heard anything about your part of the family living in or near Knob Noster?? My Mom, Frances Elizabeth Brim West, was born in Knob Noster in 1916, and for some reason, I am certain that there were other Brosnahan's there {Grandma Nora Brosnahan Brim} lived there many years and I keep trying to get information on the two cemeteries in Knob Noster but they aren't on the internet. Do you have anyone in that area that could check those cemeteries?? Also, can you recall the name of the cemetery you visited NE of LaMonte?? More and more are coming on line and it's a wonderful way to find lost relatives. In summary, my history of the Brosnahan's is very limited except from Grandma brim's death certificate saying her Father was John Brosnahan, born in Ireland and Mother was Mary Lynch, born in Ohio. I did, just find out that Grandma Brosnahan Brim's husband's Father was George Brim and his wife Rebecca Shoemaker Brim, owned a grocery store in Knob Noster until his death in 1887. He was born near Woodville, Sandusky, Ohio. If anything new comes up, please let me know and I will do the same.
Bill West

Mary Ellen: They list two cemeteries in Knob Noster but very little information. Both are in Washington Township and one is called Knob Noster Cemetery and the other, Knob Noster Catholic Cemetery. I believe the whole family was Catholic, so the Catholic cemetery is probably the one?? It would be WONDERFUL if you could visit them, and if you do PLEASE let me know the results.
I can't believe that I haven't heard from any Brosnahan's in KC?? I'm sure I am related to half of you?? My deceased Mother told me, that at one time the Brosnahan's controlled Kansas City and now I don't hear from one. Grandmother: Honora Brosnahan Brim. Her Parents: John and Mary Lynch Brosnahan. Knob Noster was there home but most of the Brosnahan's were from Kansas City. You had better respond as in October, my sister and I are heading that way, and we may have to call every Brosnahan in Kansas City. Hang in there Mary Ellen, I'm still looking although I know we are related. Bill West
