In your post you mentioned Broughtons from Huntingdonshire. I have a direct female ancestor who was a Huntingdon.

I have Lady Ada Huntingdon de Brereton, wife of Sir Ralph de Brereton II, 5th Lord of Brereton, Knight. They were my 21x-great-grandparents.

Is there a connection between the Huntingdon family and the Broughtons of Huntingdon?

I have generations of direct Howard ancestors through my 13x-great-grandmother Margaret Howard who married Sir John Wyndham of Crownthorpe and Felbrigg. My paternal grandmother was a Windham directly descended from them.

I know I have seen the Bagot name in my research, possibly married into the family in some way. It may be that your Frances Howard Bagot is connected to my Howard line in some way.

The Stafford line is married into my tree but I'm not a direct descendant of theirs. I just saw Howard, Stafford and other names I recognized in the Broughton family trees I had come across and that's why I began to think I must be on the right trail, but I may never make the actual connection since you say there is so little mention of any Broughton's having come to America. They're here as Brewtons and Brutons. That's one thing that makes genealogy research challenging, the fact that many surnames were changed to phonetic spellings or written differently on immigration documents if the person doing the paperwork did spelled the name incorrectly. But sometimes they were changed long before coming to America. I have found that McCoy was originally MacKay, Gambrell use to be Gumbrell, etc. and those aren't leaps I would have naturally thought were the same families. I've learned, however, not to assume that the name a family has used for generations is the correct original spelling. But Bruton is the only one I've found so far that has undergone at least two changes from Broughton to Brewton to Bruton. It takes a breakthrough like that to fill in the gaps.

Interesting about Thomas Broughton governor of SC. I wasn't aware of that. My Brutons settled in Virginia The Bruton Parish Church in Williamsburg Virginia was named for the family. The ancestoral family matriarch of my dad's family is Barbara Bruton Gambrell b. 1755. All American Gambrell ancestory traces back to her and her husband John Newton Gambrell I. That's one reason for my particular interest in finding where the Bruton came to America from, because she was our American "founding mother". Anyway, the Gambrells had mirgrated generations earlier from Virginia to South Carolina and that's where Barbara Bruton moved to to make her life with John Newton Gambrell and all the original Gambrells descended from them lived their lives in South Carolina. Barbara's parents who would have been contemporary with Gov. Thomas Broughton lived in Virginia at the time of his governorship. Still, most settlers to America landed in Virginia and spread out from there so there is a very good probability that Gov. Broughton was connected to the Virginia Brutons.

As for Francis Broughton in Virginia where our John Broughton was can't be coincidence. Our John was there in 1635 and was still there in 1652, but I don't know when he actually arrived. Broughton is not that common a name in the USA anyway, so for both Thomas and Francis to have both been settled in Virginia "indicates" a family tie. The only other info I have on our John was that he was a planter, which is how they referred to large landowners usually with plantations. I don't know where the Thomas Broughton you mentioned was in Virginia, but our John was in Surry County, Lawnes Creek Parish. Records indicate he was a tobacco planter and in 1659 had 200 acres in Lawnes Creek Parish.

You've given me some good information to work with that I might never have discovered otherwise. You are so kind to have taken the time to put all that together for me. Thank you so much!

Hi there, my interest is are Broughtons of Eccleshall, Staffordshire and my claimed ancestor Thomas (1590-1648).

By considering the coats of arms allowed by various Herlads, there is some evidence to claim that the Broughton's of Satffordshire and Lancashire are descended from Robert of Broughton Tower, brother to Sir Thomas who was killed at the Battle of Stoke in 1487. It is also claimed that this Robert was ancestor of some of the Broughton's of Staffordshire; those of Stukley and Godmanchester in Huntingdonshire and Mark Broughton of Seaton in Rutland.The latter, it is claimed, was an ancestor or close relative of Thomas Broughton who was Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina from 1730-1737.

What you should be wary of though are any claims of link to Broughton Castle in Oxfordshire; to Broughton of Marchwiel or those of Lower Broughton, Shropshire (the latter claimed Welsh descent.

There is a Herald's Visitation for Broughton of Whittington, Staffordshire that shows a Francis Broughton 'in Virginia' in 1664. Other than those two, I have yet to find other claims of Broughton's who went to America that early - that does not of mean that other researchers have not found more.
You mention the Howards in you tree - they too appear in mine (not published here) but through the marriage of Richard Bagot to Frances Howard in the early 1700s.

In researching my direct ancestor John Bruton, I've learned that our branch first used the spelling Brewton but later it evolved to Bruton. I have only recently learned that neither was the origanal spelling - thatit was Broughton.

In researching the Broughton family, I found that there are several families in the line of the Broughtons of Lancashire that are also in our overall family tree. My experience has been that families from those generations often married into the same families more than once. So I feel like I'm on the right track as we have the Staffords, Howards and others in our family tree as do the Broughton trees I'm seeing online.

Our John was born in England c. 1600-1610 and came to American in 1635. That is ALL the pre-America background we have on him. We don't even know his wife's name, only that she was born c. 1610 in England. This John was my 10x-great-grandfather.

If you have even a clue where he might fit into the larger Broughton family, any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

In researching my ancestor John Bruton, I discovered that our early American branch used the spelling Brewton. I only recently discovered that prior to America, it had actually been Broughton. Our John was born c. 1600-1610 in England. That's ALL we know about his pre-American history. However, in researching Broughtons, I discovered that the family from Lancashire has marriages with several families also in our family tree, so feel I'm on the right track since it has been my experience that many of these families are connected sometimes more than once in our family tree. I am a deadend though. I see that John Broughton is a very common name in the family, which is also typical of those generations - to use the same names among the males in particular, repeatedly. If anyone has information that would like a John with data that matches ours to a family in England, I would greatly appreciate the info. Thanks!

In the name of God Amen, the five and twentieth day of February one thousand six hundred thirty four and in the tenth year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord KING CHARLES I, I RICHARD BROUGHTON of Seaton in the County of Rutland, Gent, being sick in body but of good and perfect mind and memory (for which I give most humble and hearty thanks to Almighty God) do make, ordain and declare this my last will and testament in manner and form following, that is to say first and before all things I commend and commit my soul to Almighty God my creator trusting most assuredly to be saved by the death, passion and only merits of Jesus Christ my savior and redeemer. This is a long shot, but I'm putting what I know out there just in case anyone knows anything at all about the above individual.

John BROUGHTON was, according to the record of his marriage to Mary WELLS in Cosgrove, Northamptonshire, in 1710, from the village or parish of Chicheley in Buckinghamshire. Unfortunately, this is where the trail grows cold: there are very few surviving parish records for Chicheley or the surrounding parishes, let alone records of any Broughtons.

I was wondering, has anybody seen the Bishop's Transcripts, wills, etc, that might mention this particular John? I really have no idea how to proceed, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am descended from the Broughton family also (probably a different family but also with the story of American Indian Ancestry)
In my opinion, the best way to begin to search for any heritage within your family, including American Indian, is to use conventional methods to trace back your ancestors that are said to be, or connected to those said to be, American Indian. First follow the branch of the family, containing the individual in question, through the census records. The census provides a lot of information including "race", relationships, ages and location of residence. With this information completed then look for any birth, marriage or death records for the people you are interested in in the locations where they were born, married or deceased. Once you have gathered this information, you will not only know much more about this part of your family but you will likely have the answer you are looking for or be very close to finding it out.

Afraid not. Joseph (1782-Skipton) is as far back as I have gone with this particular BROUGTHON line. One of his 3 children was born and subsequently moved to Salford:

What would you like to know? He passed away in 1971 in Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, California. His Father was Royal Arthur BROUGHTON (1882-1963) Grandfather Edwin M. BROUGHTON (1826-1899)Went sometimes by the name "Wheeler,' and also "Squire." He had two sons that were living in Arizona at the time of his death.

Thanks for the Obit! Now if I could only find out who Alva (was spelled Alvah)'s parents were, I'd be happy. Alvah is the brick wall in our family. All I can find out is that he was born in Connecticut in 1804. After he married Eliza Davis (daughter of Nathan Davis and Phoebe Gridley and from New York), they settled in LaFayette, NY for a while before heading to Ohio.

I am a decendent of Samuel Tilden Broughton and Addie Rebecca Broughton (Shelton) I am in desperate need of information on the Shelton side if anyone has come across some. I believe she is Cherrokee so i belive that is why i am having so much difficulty!
