James Wesley Brown(e)

I am working on doing some research for a really good friend who is in his mid 50's and has no information on this father. I have hit a wall and not sure what else to try. His father was James Wesley Brown(e) possibly without the e however on the friends birth certificate there was an e and also on his wedding certificate there is an e. He married Marilyn W. Smith in 1957 in Kitsap County, Washington. My friend knows that his father was wanted by the FBI or law for insurance fraud, however doesn't know when he got caught etc. He does not believe his father is alive as he last saw him in the 1980's in Seaside, Oregon. ANY HELP WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED!!! Thanks in advance

I wonder how often this happened? My grandfather and his brother - my grandfather kept the 'e' and his brother dropped the 'e'. By DNA we are related to the Brown(e) family from County Cork, Ireland. Never have found who swam to the States. Will look at this NJ line. Maybe.

I am looking for the location of death for Chares Francis BROWNE (sometimes Brown), b. 1863 in Antrim Township, Wyandot COunty County, Ohio, and believed to have died in July, 1916 - location unknown - and buried in December 1916 in Grand Prairie Cemetery, Brush Ridge, Marion County Ohio.

Charles was my grandfather's uncle - he married my great grandfather's sister. I have him listed on Find A Grave, with a picture of the headstone. The cemetery office has sketchy notes that he died in July of 1916, but that the body didn't get interred until December, 1916.

Charles was the son of Abraham and Mary Jane Eckleberry Browne. The family went by Brown and Browne.

I know that this is a needle in a haystack, but have exhausted everything in Ohio.

Cheers;

I am a "Browne" from the States. Through the DNA project, I have found connections in County Cork but cannot find anyone coming across from Ireland/UK to the States. Furtherest back with that line is Robert (Robin) Browne married Catherine Kelleher circa 1778 lived in Ballincrossing.
On this side, two generations back two brothers; one kep the 'e' and the other droppped the 'e' so it is "interesting" to trace. Any clue would be helpful.

Thanks

Hi there,

I am aware that it is along time time since your original post on here.

I know this Browne family very well, I am Gerald or Gerry and Garrett's third son and I would be pleased to provide you with all the info I have to date on the Browne family tree, which I am still researching.
John or Sean Browne was my uncle and he lived and worked in Birmingham, UK, for most of his life.
Kathleen or Kate O'Neill (Sean's sister and my aunt) died in Birmingham on the 9th April 2001.
My father Garrett died in Cork hospital in Ireland on the 7th May 1990.
Mary Ann (Colbert) died in Ireland on the 11th August 1986.

I have only just noticed one very strange thing, Garrett, Kathleen and Mary Ann were all aged 73 years at the time of their respective deaths.

Hope this info might be of assistance as and when you log in again to this site.
They are neighbouring counties. In sporting terms they've a fierce rivalry. A lot of families have a cross-over between the two counties, however I'm afraid my Browne's don't have that connection as they were firmly rooted in the north-west part of the county.

Im searching for the family of Michael Browne - if he had any.
I know that he was born to parents John Browne & Mary Costello in Curraghcroneen, Lixnaw, Co. Kerry in 1861.
I've found a death record that I believe is a correct match listing his death as 1931 in Chicago. His wife is listed as Margaret.
However I can find no concrete proof of his life in between. I've searched census records but there are several possibilities of Michael & Margaret Brownes in Chicago along with children of varying ages.
I have'nt been able to find an obituary which could be of great help depending on the content.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Eoin Quilter

Hello,
Talk about a blast from the past. I just recently copied information I had about my great-grandfather, Judge Samuel B. Browne of Mobile, to give to my grandchildren for their lineage and family tree.

Might you be Lisa Smith, wife of Tony?

My father was Harry Toulmin Browne, Jr., his father was Harry Toulmin Browne Sr., his father was Judge Samuel Browne. I grew up in Mobile and spent many a Sunday at Grandma and Grandpas home and summers on Weeks Bay.

I know you wrote this some time ago but I do have some information should you still desire to receive it.

Annie Z. Boice was the daughter of George and Elizabeth Malone Boice, and the grand-daughter of Abram and Lois (Knickerbocker) Boice of New York.

At the time of the writing I have, Judge Browne had four living children, Ethel, Ewing, Harry and Hubert. My grand-father married Naomi McAdory. His children I knew were Naomi Simonet (Snooky), Mary Jeanne Crawford, Betty Smith, Samuel Browne, Eustis Browne and my father Harry T. Browne.

My cousins know me as Tessie though I go by Tess now and my legal name is Teresa (Browne) Ruth. Please feel free to contact me. As stated I do have some information that goes back to Judge Browne's Civil War history.

Browne/Brown of Ayr, Scotland 1700

I have been researching my early family in Maryland, USA - a Charles BROWNE born in probably Scotland got a land patent in Queen Anne County, Maryland in 1748, married Priscilla Brooke (b. in maryland) and had 5 children (Elizabeth, Robert, James, Basil, Bennett) - he left will for his lands in Maryland to be divided amongst his children, but his children and grandchildren fought a legal battle against each other for the land.

The problem as stated in court is that James BROWNE, 2nd son of Charles Browne, inherited the estate of a Andrew COCHRANE, (born in Ayr, Provost of Glasgow, who had no children of his own), moved to Glasgow, and then died a year later leaving no heir for his lands back in Maryland. There is evidence that a James Brown did at least receive the library of Andrew Cochrane.

There is obviously some connection between the Browne and Cocharane family which I haven't been able to figure out. The information I have from American sources all seem to point that Andrew Cochrane's father must of had a sister who must have married Charles Browne's mother, making James 2nd son of Charles, a likely candidate to be the heir of Andrew Cochrane's estate if he had no children or nephews of his own.

The name Cochrane is also passed down through several generations of my family line, so I assumed with James inheriting Andrew Cochrane's estate, that they had to be family, but I had no evidence of a female Cochrane marrying into the Browne family.

However, I did know that the mother of Andrew Cochrane was Janet CRAWFORD - after some quick research, I found that she had a sister, Magdalene CRAWFORD who married a Robert BROWN in 1699 and they had a son named Charles BROWN in 1700. I find this information extremely coincidental, but have had no other proof that this Charles BROWN is my Charles BROWNE of Maryland.

The clues that this could be strong evidence are:

1) my Charles Browne named his oldest son Robert, which is the name of the Ayr Charles Brown's father
2) positive that Robert Brown married Magdalene Crawford in Ayr 1699
3) positive that Janet Crawford and Magdalene Crawford were sisters, parents are John Crawford and Margaret Ferguson
4) positive that Janet Crawford is the mother of Andrew Cochrane
5) Andrew Cochrane and the Ayr Charles Brown are first cousins, and the Ayr Charles Brown would be a likely candidate to be heir to Andrew Cochrane
6) positive that James Browne, son of Charles Browne of Maryland, did inherit the estate of Andrew Cochrane of Glasgow and Ayr

My only thought about the Cochrane middle name being passed across generations in my family is that because all the evidence I have of Andrew Cochrane is that he was Provost of Glasgow and a man to be respected, that the name was given out of respect for a cousin from the Browne female line, not because it was a direct name to be passed down.

Does anyone else have any evidence to support or negate these findings?
GENEALOGICAL and PERSONAL MEMOIRS
Relating to the Families of Boston and Eastern Massachusetts
Prepared under the editorial supervision of William Richard CUTTER, A. M.
Historian of the New England Historic Genealogical Society; Librarian of Woburn Public Library; Authur of “The Cutter Family,” “History of Arlington,” “Bibliography of Woburn,” etc., etc.
Volume 3.; Illustrated
New York; Lewis Historical Publishing Company; 1908
Pages 1265-1267

JOHN BROWNE

The Brown families of Marblehead are descended for the most part from two immigrants of English ancestry, Captain John Browne (or Brown) and William, presumably his brother.

(I) Captain John Browne, born in England, came to Marblehead shortly before his marriage, from the town of Exeter, according to town records of Marblehead. He died at Marblehead, May 17, 1707, aged forty-seven. Savage states that a John Brown, passenger, embarked from England May 16, 1679, on the ship "Prudence," for Boston, and we believe that must be the record of Captain John's immigration. He married, May 28, 1686, Elizabeth Legg, who was a member of the Marblehead church, a granddaughter of John Legg, who was in the employ of Mr. Humphrey at Lynn, May 3, 1631; admitted freeman May 6, 1635; removed to Marblehead where he was a proprietor in 1649; deposed in 1657 that he was aged forty-five years; wife Elizabeth deposed in 1665 that she was about fifty-seven years old; had sons Samuel, John and Daniel Legg. Children, born at Marblehead: 1. Deborah, baptized April 15, 1688. 2. John, baptized January 19, 1689-90; died February 17, 1702-3, aged thirteen. 3. Elizabeth, baptized February 21, 1691-2. 4. Mary, baptized October 29, 1693. 5. Legg, baptized January 26, 1695-6; died March 1695-6. 6. Giles, baptized January 31, 1696-7; died December 21, 1707-8. 7. Jane, baptized February 19, 1700-1. 9. Sarah, baptized April 1, 1704.

(I) William Browne, probably brother of John Brown (I), was born about 1660-70. He married, September 23, 1695, Hannah Joy, of Salem. He or another William Browne of Marblehead married, November 11, 1697, Johanna Taynour, at Marblehead. The families of Brown had grown so numerous at this time in Lynn, Salem, Marblehead, Reading and vicinity, that it is virtually impossible in most cases to get complete and accurate lineages in the family. The Marblehead records give as children of William and Hannah: 1. William, baptized April 28, 1700. 2. Mary, baptized March 14, 1702-3. 3. Samuel, born March 11, 1705-6. 4. Eleanor, born February 2, 1707-8.

(II) John Browne, son of John Brown (I), was born about 1690. He married at Marblehead, November 6, 1718, Rebecca Frost, of Salem. He was a lieutenant in Captain Elijah Denning's company, Colonel Ashley's Berkshire regiment, ordered in 1777 to Fort Edward by General Schuyler; also lieutenant in Captain Zenas Wheeler's company, Colonel John Ashley's regiment, 1777; also first lieutenant in Captain Howes's company, General Fellows's brigade, 1779.

(IV) Eli Brown, son of Eli Brown, was born in Marblehead, 1757. He enlisted in the revolution, as ordinary seaman on the ship "Franklin," Captain John Turner, from Marblehead. He is described as of light complexion, aged thirteen. He married, at Marblehead, August 10, 1788, Sarah Graves, who died March 2, 1848, aged eighty years, two months. He was president of a bank at Amherst, Massachusetts, and a citizen of distinction. He was educated in the common schools, and early in life, like most of the youth of his native town, went to the Grand Banks in fishing vessels. Later he established an express business in Marblehead, and continued his express line between that town and Lynn until 1862, when he engaged in the grocery business in which he has continued with marked success to the present time. He is one of the oldest and most honored merchants of Marblehead. In politics he is a Republican. He married, November 8, 1846, Hannah E. Brown, born August 18, 1827, daughter of Captain Ambrose and Elizabeth Brown. (See below). Children: 1.
