Doing this BROWNLEE research for a dear friend - not my family, though I've worked on this tree so long now, it feels like mine!

Taken from an old handwritten family tree stuck in a Bible, circa 1920-30's, are the names:

Martha Eleanor BROWNLEE, (1901-1989) married to George Fant BOATNER

her parents, "Jimmie" or "Jim" James William BROWNLEE (1858/61-1934) married to Leah Mariah YIELDING

his parents, William Joseph BROWNLEE (1839-1896) married to Martha MYERS

his parents, James BROWNLEE, born 1812, SC married to Mary "Polly", born 1813, SC

From there, the list is blank. Research has been very confusing - so many William James, James William, and Joseph BROWNLEE or BROWNLEY's!! I am trying to connect my William James, born 1839 MS, who lived in Marshall and Tippah Counties, MS, back to his possible grandfather, Joseph BROWNLEE, born 1749, who is a possible patriot. It's a very long shot, but I have researched, submitted, and gotten approved two Forgotten Patriots for DAR & SAR (names that have never appeared in their records or their indexes or been used by any other descendent) so I have a decent track record doing this stuff, I think.

Wish those Oaths of Fidelity were available! Thank you for responding,
Laura

He may have supplied foodstuffs or other aids to the Militia. He may have even been disabled in some way. A lot of the Patriots did not have active duty with the Military. Take a good look at the local county records and don't forget how the county lines changed in that time frame. Being a Patriot was the way many SAR and DAR members ancestors qualified. My Brownlee ancestors didn't arrive in the US until before the Civil War. I don't think William served in the Civil War! Mary Gardner

Mary

I think you'll be the first to use Joseph for DAR, if you are successful in locating relevant support. It is also possible that Joseph's father was in the Revolution. What's your descent from Joseph? - Don Brownlee

don.brownlee(at)csun.edu

BROWNLEE in American Revolution

I have Joseph BROWNLEE, born 1749, married to Ester CAMPBELL, and died in Laurens Co., SC in 1805. He left a large estate, including slaves, so he was a man of stature and wealth.

He lived in the Old Ninety-six District from 1768 onwards, which became Abbeville and Laurens Counties, SC, where all of his 10 children were born. Joseph was the right age, mid to late 20's, when the American Revolution broke out, but I cannot find him listed on any roster of militia, or getting a pension, or serving in the War. He must have helped in some way for the cause, so did he take an Oath of Allegiance, forsaking his Scotch-Irish king? Where would I find these Oaths? They are published in book form for Virginia and Maryland - are they for South Carolina?

If Joseph was a Loyalists, like so many South Carolinians, I don't believe he would have been able to amass so much property, and remain in the new country after Independence.

Please help me find Joseph's service or oath of allegiance to South Carolina for a DAR application.

Thanks!

Re: Martha Jane Brownlee

Hi. My name is Renee. I am searching for the family of my Grandmother on my mother's side. Her name was Ollie Mae Brownlee from Cross, Berkeley Co, SC. Her father was James Elliott Brownlee. Mother: Lottie Jane Smith. I can find were they lived in Eutawville, SC in 1900 but am unable to find anything else out about my great grandfather. He was born in 1875 and died in 1911. My mother died several years ago and she was about the only one that ever talked any about him. From bits and pieces I think he worked for the railroad and got injured. He supposedly worked at the Ridgeville station in Dorchester CO., SC. He is buried at Cypress Campground Cememtery along w/ her. Their son Walter is also buried there. The other children were James L., Walter, Charlie, Viola, St. Clair, Janie, Mattie. If in your research you have come across anything about them I would greatly appreciate the info. Thank you

Did you ever get a response to your "Friman/Day/Amdor" connection? My grandfather was a Day. His mother was an Amdor. I remember some Friman's coming to Villisca, IA from S.D. when I was about twenty years old. I think the Friman's were related through the Amdors.

I have a copy of "The Amdor Trail West". I am also mentioned in it.

Hi Toireasa, I have a William (1833) & Samuel (1823) Brownlee, brother, in my direct line. Both born in Adams County, Ohio. Their parents were Samuel Brownlee (1783 - 1883) & Nancy Haney 1798 – 1879. Wasn't sure if I should respond because the parents differ but a strange coincidence none the less.

30 June 1887

MULLAGHDUN - At a meeting of the registered vestrymen of the parish of Mullaghdun (Cleenish), on Monday, the 27th instant, at noon, the Rev. D. C. Abbott occupied the chair. About 160 persons were present. Messrs, Wm. Benson and Wm. H. Wilson were elected scrutineers; and the list of 284 registered vestrymen was read and approved, and select vestrymen were appointed for the ensuing year. Messrs. John Brownlee and William Benson were re-elected synodsmen, and Captain Mervyn Archdall, M.P, Mr. James Macaulay, and Mr. James Rutledge parochial nominators. On considering the question of finance, Mr. John Gamble said, although he could not conscientiously cut himself off from his own (the Presbyterian) Church by registration, yet he wished to contribute fourpence in the pound on his Poor law valuation to the support of the Irish Church in that parish- a statement which was received with applause. It was then proposed by Mr. William Benson, seconded by Mr. William Rutledge, and unanmously agreed, that all should at least contribute fourpence, some fivepence, in the pound. A large number of persons then signed the subscription. list, and the meeting separated.

MARY BROWNLEE MINCHIN -- Obituary

Mrs. Minchin's obituary is on the Brown Funeral Home (Chipley, FL) website. I am not related to Mrs. Minchin, nor do I have additional information. I am posting the obit for interested researchers.

*****

Mary Leavie Catherine Brownlee Minchin went home to be with Jesus on Sunday, October 16, 2011. She passed away at North Florida Regional Medical Center in Gainesville, Florida. She was 93 years of age.

Leavie was born in Lawrenceville, Georgia to Guy and Essie Brownlee, the second of eleven siblings. Determination was one of her strong points, and she exhibited this trait early on as she worked her way through school to receive her degree in Home Economics from Berry College in Rome, Georgia. Education was her chosen career and remained important to her all of her life.

After graduation from Berry, she moved to Florida where she taught secondary school in Monticello, Mayo and Aucilla before moving to Chipley to serve as the Washington County Home Demonstration Agent. It was in Chipley that she met and married confirmed bachelor, Robert Edward Minchin, Sr. Leavie went on to teach for over twenty years at Kate M. Smith Elementary School and influenced many students during that span of time.

In her retirement, Leavie enjoyed many activities, including travelling with her friends, painting at the Council on Aging, and quilting with the ladies in Wausau. She had a penchant for photographing any event she attended and was well known for sharing her photos with many people. In addition, she found much joy in serving others. Her time was often spent in baking her famous yeast bread to give to others, driving her friends to doctors’ appointments, and visiting with many in nursing homes and hospitals.

She loved her church, First Baptist of Chipley where she taught Sunday School for many years. In later years, she was a member of the Fidelis Sunday School Class, Triple L and WMU. Her membership in the Washington County Historical Society and Washington County Retired Educators also meant much to Leavie.

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Edward Minchin, Sr. and her infant son, James Allen Minchin. Survivors include her son, Robert Edward Minchin, Jr. and wife, Susan and their children, Bob, Minch, Joy, and Joshua all of Gainesville; and another son, Malcolm Guy Minchin, Sr. and wife, Beth and their children, Matt and Mary Beth of Chipley and Macc and his wife, Becka of Gainesville.

She dearly loved her family, who were her pride and joy. Being a member of the “greatest generation,” Leavie loved her country and felt blessed to live in Chipley for over 60 years and to have so many friends that cared for her. For the last six-plus years of her life, she spent half her time in Gainesville with her eldest son and his family. She leaves behind many friends in this area also.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at First Baptist Church of Chipley with Rev. Michael Orr officiating. Interment will follow at Glenwood Cemetery in Chipley. The family will receive visitors and friends on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 from 6-8 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home Brickyard Road Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that honorariums be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund of Chipley.

Brownlee election tactics in 1815

9/24/1889 St. Paul (MN) Daily News

OLD-TIME INDIANA CAMPAIGN.

Col. Brownlee Won the Day with His Barrel of Old Peach Brandy.

The Hon. James O. Clarke, of Kansas, in the St. Louis Globe-Democrat: I have now reached the advanced age of ninety two years, and when I look back over, the last three-quarters of a century many interesting reminiscences of pioneer, life are recalled. One thing I particularly notice is that the whisky traffic now exerts its influence in politics in a manner entirely different from that of half a century ago. The most exciting political campaign I ever witnessed was won by the use of a barrel of old peach brandy. The year before Indiana was admitted into the Union I was living with my parents in Franklin county, that state, near the present site of Cornersville. The chief political leaders in the county were Lawyer Brown and Col. James Brownlee, and the voters were divided into two nearly equal factions, known repectively as the Brownites and the Brownleeites. At all elections the candidates were expected to provide plenty of free whisky for the voters, and it was a rare occurrence for an election day to pass by without corn juice in politics causing a bloody fight. In the fall of 1815 an election was called to elect delegates to a convention which was to meet in Corydon (then the capital) the following June for the purpose of adoping a constitution preparatory to admission of the state. Brown and Brownlee announced themselves as candidates, and the hottest campaign I ever experienced was inaugurated. Churches were broken up, and neighborhoods and family feeling became so bitter that years were required to efface the effect of the quarrel. A few weeks before the election Col. Brownlee sent his two young sons and myself with a team and wagon to Cincinnati to get a barrel of peach brandy for election purposes. The trip occupied about a week, but we returned home and secreted the barrel in a cave on the Brownlee farm without the object of our trip being learned outside. The old colonel threatened to horsewhip us it we opened our mouths on the subject. Of course we kept the secret. Col. Brownlee knew that his rival had provided a barrel of common whisky for the Brownites, and, anticpating the effect the sudden tapping of a barrel of "old peach" would have on the voters, he smiled contentedly as he thought of the certain discomfiture of Lawyer Brown. On election day Brown opened his barrel first and started a regular boom, and for a time it appeared that he would win the victory. But later the Brownlee boys brought the barrel of old peach brandy to the polls. The head was knocked in, a couple of gourds were hung on the sides, and the crowd invited to go for it. The news that Brownlee had opened a barrel of real "old peach" spread like wild fire, and the way the Hoosiers swallowed that delicious nectar would put to shame old Bacchus himself. The Brownites gathered around the Brownlee barrel, and the faction following Brown, who had furnished only common whisky, went to pieces. Col. Brownlee was easily elected. The following year, when the colonel left home to attend the convention, he shouldered his gun and made the trip to Corydon on foot, the only highway to the territory's capital in those days being an Indian trail blazed out through the vast forest which covered the intervening country.
Re: Anyone lose a Brownlee about 1868?

10/27/1933 Casa Grande (AZ) Dispatch, p. 1

Near Apache Pass a monument with the following inscription was found: "In Memoriam of John Brownlee, killed by Apaches May 26, 1868. Age 26 years." Swirling sand storms and other erosive elements have eaten the wood work from around the painted lettering until the inscription has the appearance of having been done in relief.
