Hi, again. It would be nice to know exactly how you fit in. Perhaps you wold email me direct on Petebruges@aol.com as there is quite a lot that is not on the net.

Thomas Bruges of Seend Esq. J.P. was indeed the younger brother of William Bruges of Semington. Thomas Bruges, his wife and three daughters - were all buried in Melksham Church. There were no survivors of that branch. The Ludlow Bruges family stem from Susanna, the daugher of William Bruges who married Benjamin Pennel Ludlow, a surgeon and apothecary. They had a son, William Heald Ludlow Bruges who was brought up at Seend House by his great uncle Thomas.

I dont think that we are descended from William Bruges, Garter King of Arms - although he is most definitely a Bruges. William was survived by a daughter who married the next Garter. You might like to know more about our ancestors, e.g. William Bruges was the son of yet another Thomas Bruges (1705-1782) - a very successful farmer and landower - who married Susanna (1717-1767) the daughter of Paul Storredege and Elizabeth Stokes. Thomas (1705-1782) was the son of Matthew Bruges and Mary (1671-1728), the daughter of Paul Weston (1644-1718)of Coates, Bishops Cannings and Elizabeth Stevens - perhaps you know about all this.
Hello
Many thanks for your reply. It has cleared up one or two things. Am I right that William Bruges born 1746-1831 Semington had a brother Thomas Bruges JP of Seend 1748-1835? I was looking to see if there was a connection between the Bruges of Semington(my tree)and the Ludlow Bruges at Seend.I went to Seend last week and found references in the church to the family.
Also the family believe that they are decended from the first Garter King at Arms William Bruges 1375-1450. I wonder if you have any information on that?
Regards
Hilary

I see you are researching an ancestor. Thomas Bruges was born on 28 November 1811. He was the son of Thomas Bruges (1774-1835) and Susanna Milsom (1777-1819). Thomas did indeed marry Mary Ann Tiley Oram (1821-1881), the daughter of George Oram of Rowde (1790-1823)and Sarah Tiley.
If you can tell me what you are looking for, I might be able to help. The father of Thomas Bruges, Senior was William Bruges (1746-1831) of Semington who married secondly Elizabeth Shore who married firstly Edward Fowle of Manningford Abbots! William only had issue by his first wife Elizabeth Lewis (1749-1788).

I'm sorry but I have no Jane Bruges in that area but the place of marriage is not always helpful. If the name is clearly Bruges then it should link into one of the Bruges pedigrees, since the name is fairly rare. Other family names would help. The name of the father or mother would help.

Henry Bruges

Henry Bruges, born 1641 (Burges)in Steeple Ashton married an Anne Harris in Great Cheverell, Wiltshire 1664/5. They had a son Thomas Harris Bruges who married a Rebecca Warrener. Any connections to this family would be interesting. Henry Bruges died in 1713 in Great Cheverell.
Henry's father was Mathewe Burges of Steeple Ashton (1603-1663) who married Dorcas Crooke the daughter of Thomas Crooke nd Grace Margeram. His grandparents were Henry Burges and Anne More of West Ashton.
