My ancestors include Josiah Brush, who fought in the battles around Bennington, and his son Jonathan who went to Ohio in the early 1800's. I have complete info, but Stuart Brush's book also covers their time in Vermont. After the war, Josiah ran a tavern in northern Vermont. The building still exists, as far as I know.

I also have a Harcourt ancestor, Richard, whose g-daughter married into the Brush line.

Let me know if you wish to correspond.

Jim Brush

My Grandfathers name is Edward Clifford Brush, born in Windsor, Ontario. His mothers name I believe was rose, and his father Clifford. Is there any information? I think he had a brother named William Brush as well. He was last seen in Texas, he was given a speeding ticket. He would be 80 or 81 now.
My Name is Heather, I am looking for my grandfather Edward Clifford Brush. He was born in Windsor, Ontario around 1931. So he would be 80 or 81, If anyone please has any information please contact me. He was at age 35 married to June Martha Porteous who at that time 1966, had given birth to my mother Tracy Lee Brush. I really hope that someone at least knows if hes alive or dead. His mothers name was Rose, and I am guessing his fathers name was Clifford. He had a brother who name I believe was William Brush. Please help me find out about him, even if its an obituary.

Thanks

Hello!

I'm a musician based near Cleveland, Ohio. I have posted here before (obviously, I guess). I'm a huge fan of the work of Dr. Brush, to the extant that I've put some of his writing to music.

I have two requests: I would love to hear from a living relative, and I would love to have a photo of his grave stone.

He wrote about the area of PA that was also where my family lived. I guess that's why it resonates with me so much.

Please drop me a line if you can help me out with any of this. I believe it's against the rules to tell you more about my project here - since I hope that I will go commercial with it. However, through email I'll be able to fill you in.

Thanks in advance!

Bruce Jennings

Hi! I am researching my husband's family (Brush) and they were in Harmony, Susquehanna, PA. Have you seen the four-vol. Descentants of Richard and Thomas Brushe compiled by Stuart Brush? I own the set and will be glad to look and see if there is anything on your Brush family. The fact that they are from Harmony suggests to me that they are from the same Brush ancestors as my husbands. Tina

Yes, we are most certain this is our Jeremiah buried at Yates near the Brush family. We have a very old Lawson Bible and received much information from it's pages.
If your query doesn't turn up someone who can do a lookup for you, the library in Huntington, NY, had a copy way back when (not surprisingly...). It probably doesn't circulate (I didn't end up using it, so don't recall), but maybe they have someone who, probably for a fee, could make copies of any pages mentioning Philetus for you. Good luck!

Yes, I'm still "out there"...

However, I don't have any information on any Philetus BRUSH other than "mine"...sorry!

You might try finding a copy of the book THE DESCENDANTS OF THOMAS AND RICHARD BRUSH OF HUNTINGTON, LI, compiled by Stuart and Russell Brush. As I recall, it was not easy to find a copy of it (perhaps that has changed now tho, since it was a while ago that I was looking), but that was the publication that answered my questions about "my" Philetus Brush. Perhaps it will do the same for you and yours!

Good luck, and take care.

Kathy

Hi Kathy,

I'm also ooking for a Philetus Brush. He's said by some to be b.1786 but I believe he may be the son of Jesse and Ruth, b.1765. Mine married Asenath Powers, b.1790, in New York about 1815 which would make him much older than her but able to have been the father of my grgr grandmother, Susan M. Brush. I'm just wondering if you have any info about this Philetus Brush or any other mine might be. I hope you're still out there after almost eight years!

Thanks to anyone who might have some info,

Sue P.

Looking for this Phietus Brush, said to be born in Rhode Island in 1875 Minnesota and 1880 federal censuses (as father of Susan M. Brush Dix). The Brush history on Ancestry has a Philetus but one generation earlier. Most are from New York and sometimes they say somebody left and no more is known.

He m. Asenath Powers and they may have been in Renselaer(?), N.Y. with one female child under ten in the 1810 census, ages would fit. 1820 census shows them in Vernon, Oneida, N.Y. next door to Susan's future husband. My second great grandmother, Susan M. Brush, was born about 1818 so their marriage had to be by then. In the 1830 census Asenath Brush appears as head of household in Augusta, Oneida, N.Y.

I want to find the marriage of Philetus and Asenath, his death record, Susan M. Brush's birth and marriage to George H. Dix and the birth of her first child, Irving Dix. All of this happened in N.Y. and I haven't been able to find records. Also, just in case someone knows about N.Y. records. the death of Susan's mother-in-law, Olive Dix.

I would really appreciate any facts or ideas anyone might have. Thanks, Sue P.

thanks for your reply. I did not find Irvin in the 1860 census. I will look again under evan/jane. What is the "old geneology" you are referring to? I found a newspaper conscript calling the names of the drafted men from oct 1863 in oakland/Susquehanna. I also cannot find a civil war record for Irvin. I have traced Irvin in 1870 and from then on..I find him in Muscatine,Iowa and Macon,Missouri. He marries a Mary Jane (Richey) Dull in 1867 and they go on to have 2 boys one of them being my great grandfather.. I lose Irvin after 1900 at age 74 living with his step daughter in Missouri assuming he died between 1900-1910. still looking. I am wondering if Jane was his first wife and she dies...do we see her child on any census with family in the area? thanks so much.

Thank you for your response to my query about Irving Brush. I found their names in an old genealogy which indicated Jane A., dau of William & Delia married Irving Brush. No date when they married but found the family in the 1850 Susquehanna Co., Pa. federal census - Jane was age 6 in 1850. In 1860 she is with Evan Brush (prob. name the censustaker heard). By then Jane was age 16. The old genealogy says she had 1 child and that is all the information it gave. I lost them after 1860. I was hoping he was in the Civil War and there would be some record of his service, but nothing found yet. If she died young it makes sense as to why I can't find them after 1860 census. Supposedly she only had one child so perhaps she did die young.

Thank you for your interest. If I find anything I'll drop you a note.
Hello; I've cut and pasted below a reply that addresses your question from back in 2003. You may be able to get some more helpful information by contacting a gentleman who had several replies on this topic, and I believe wrote a book on the Brushes, Stuart Brush.
I hope this is of some help to you.
John W.

From a reply in 2003;
The first Brush in the record is one Ralph E. Brush, b.17 Nov 1870 in NYC, d. 19 APR 1930 in Brooklyn NY who married one of the daughters of the original family who started the record, her being one Rebecca F. Lowerre, b. 16 Dec 1874 in Bridgehampton, NY. They had at least one little Brush, Helen A. b. in Greensport (NY?) on 22 Sep 1897. Ralph was the son of William Y. and Ella Unknown Brush, he dying in 1909.
One other Brush was recorded in the bible, Ja(mes?), but I was unable to connect him as a Child, sibling, grandchild, etc. A sibling, Carol, of Ralph Y. was also noted.
I hope this is of some help to you.

Her maiden name was Brush. The man I am looking for was named Harold N. Von Gross. He was born in NY on Feb. 3, 1934 and died in Alameda County, CA on August 31, 1981. He served in the Navy in Korea and Vietnam and is buried in the National Cemetery of the
Pacific in Hawaii. The Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) was given about 1400 Vietnam dog tags to be returned to the owners. His name is on the list at the JPAC website. http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/index.php?page=dogtag_project&...

There is no charge for the return of the tag.
Hi:

I am not a descendant, but I am familiar with Frederic Brush through his book of poetry, titled, "Songs of the Susquehanna." I am a musician, currently working on a collection of songs based on my family's history. For years, they lived in Mehoopany, a town on PA. He wrote a poem titled, "High Road to Mehoopany", which came up in a Google search.

It turns out that "Songs of the Susquehanna" -- now in the public domain -- is digitized and available through Google's library. I downloaded it, and absolutely love it. I hope to set some of Dr. Brush's poems to music. I would also love to have a first edition of the book.

I know this thread was active a long time ago, but I hope to hear from a descendant someday. Please write.

Regards,

Bruce Jennings
Shaker Heights, Ohio

Do Thomas and Richard have Pennsylvania descendents? And, if so, is your book still available? Also, is there another way to reach you? The address given in your message is no longer valid.

Dear Mr. Brush,

While searching for information on Theron C. Leland I found a reference to the Brush family; do you have any information on his wife, Mary Ann Brush, who was apparently married to a man named Torbett before her union with Leland? Thanks in advance for any information you can share. My email is hansonr@indiana.edu.

Russell L.
