Hi Michael, got your message about not receiving a reply. am sending again fingers crossed. The information I have on Robert Bryden born 1876, in Lockerbie, trained as a vet in Edinburgh Uni, and became Fellow of the RCVS, in England. Also RAVC WW1. I have few pictures of brother Jim, and his grave.and have pictures of Alice and Jessie. Apart from that and his marrying my great grandmother, I know little of his family in Scotland, and what happened to his siblings. anything you could add to this would be very helpful. If this fits in with your line of interest I have information on Bob's wife and her family, past and present. Jill
Ancestor of the Perth county, Ontario line:

Thomas Bryden (father of Joan Bryden who married John Hamilton) was born in 1775 in Ettrick, Selkirkshire, son of Walter Bryden and Margaret Grieve, and died between 1851 and 1861 (disappearance from census). He married Agnes Robb in 1803 in Manor, Peebles-shire and was living in Peebles in 1841 and in 1851.

In the 1841 census in the town of Peebles, there is Thomas Bryden 60 (wright) [note in 1841 they rounded ages], Agnes Bryden 60, Andrew Bryden 20 (mason), and Agnes Frazer (6). Thomas Bryden and Agnes Frazer were not born in the county of Peebles. In the 1851 census Thomas Bryden age 73 (joiner or carpenter, born: Ettrick, Selkirkshire), Catherine Peebles 37 (housekeeper, born: Peebles), and grandson Andrew Peebles 9 (scholar, born: Dundee, Angus).

I am descended from John Hamilton and Joan Bryden, who both died in Elma township in Perth county, Ontario. I believe Joan Bryden (born about 1808 in Peebles) is the daughter of Thomas Bryden and Agnes Robb who married in 1803 in Manor, Peebles-shire. Through the IGI I've traced these Brydens back to a James Bryden, father of Walter born 1710 in Ettrick, Selkirkshire. Is this of the same Bryden family?

E-mail me at james.f.reid@gmail.com

I also found Peter Bryden in the 1881 Census aged 1 at that time. I am trying to get further back than William's father, James Bryden b:1805 (married Mary Bell).
Hi Andrew
I am interested in your posting as my GGGrandfather was also William Bryden (b:1836 Dalbeattie) and his wife was called Ann Black (b:1840) (m: Dunscore on 24 June 1859). His father was James Bryden (b:1805) m: Mary Bell (also born 1805/6). In the 1841 Census they recorded 3 children, Agnes (10), William (5) and James (2).
If you think any of the above connects to you I would be happy to hear from you and provide you with more detailed info on both William and James.

Hello Joshua,
Thank you very much for your reply, but I'm not convinced you are the same family as my husband. (I am the one researching his tree).
Bob's Gt.Grandfather, was William Bryden b 1847, b Lochmben, a Draper, and he married Agnes Bryden Johnstone.
They had four chidren, Robert Bryden b 1873 who married Agnes Beatrice Haley in Leeds,Grace Elizabeth,Elizabeth Grierson, and William John b 1877. All four children were born in Llanely, Carmarthanshire,Wales after their parents moved from Lochmaben,Dumfriesshire. William John was shown as John on the census, but I haven't been able to trace him since the 1901 census, when he was shown to be a Tailors Cutter, living with his two sisters in Leeds.
From Llanelly they had moved back to Scotland after the death of their father in 1980,at the young age of 32yrs, and then they moved back to Leeds.
If you still think we are related we would love to hear from you and you can contact me on betty.hetherington@talktalk.net. At present we are on a two month stay in Spain, but I have my laptop so I can still access Ancestry.Where in the world are you?
Look for forward to hearing from you.
Regards
Betty Hetherington

Hi Bob, I read with interest your post and to tell you that my GGGrandfather was William Bryden, a Master Tailor from Dumfries - he seems to be the father of your Grandfather Robert who was brother to my GGrandfather John, who was also a Master Tailor. He was born I believe in 1869 and married Ann Black where they went on to have 10 children. I am in the middle of researching this but also found a Peter Bryden, who will have been their little brother, and a picture of the gravestone on a War Site which shows that Peter died in Action and is buried at Boulogne Eastern Cemetery. Some fantastic stuff and talent in our Bryden family, namely, artistry, music and poetry. Hope to hear from you soon.

I note the listing of names

One of the interesting points in your post is the list of names which includes Adam and William and at the end of your post, you say Pa whch I presume means Pennsylvania. Now these are not uncommon names but....

In my family tree is a note that says "William Bryden went in 1784 to Philadelphia". William (DOB unknown) was the youngest of four children. His next oldest brother was Adam born 1750 who was my ancestor. Their father was Adam born 1717 d 1795 mother Margaret Ramage d 1793. The elder Adam was a miller at Rachan Mill which is in the Borders of Scotland near Broughton. There is an interesting tombstone that sets this out.

Would be interesting to see if you could tie your family back to this William Bryden

Martha:

You may have this information about Martha and Ellen Bryden by now, but just in case, here it is.

Ellen Bryden was the last of twelve children born to John Bryden, b. 1810 Scotland, d. 8 Mar 1880, Kaladar Township, Lennox and Addington County, Ontario and his wife Isabella Bookless, b. 1813 Scotland, d. 3 Jan 1884 Kaladar Township, Lennox and Addington County, Ontario.

John and Isabella's third child was my great-grandfather John Bryden, b. 1835 NY, d. after 1914, location unknown. He and his wife Esther Bryden (nee Reed), b. May 1839 Ontario, d. 18 Oct. 1904 Colfax, Whitman County, Washington, had nine children, all born in Ontario, the fourth of which was Martha Bryden.

So Martha was Ellen's niece. William Handley Striker married both of them.

Ellen Bryden: b. 28 Aug 1854 Ontario, m. William Handley Striker 26 Sep 1872 in Hastings County, Ontario, imm. USA 1879, res. Michigan abt. 1880 - 1886, res. Colfax, Whitman County, Washington abt. 1900 - 1903, d. 19 Jan 1903 Colfax, Washington. Ellen and W. H. had four children, two b. Hastings County, Ontario, two born Kent County, Michigan.

Martha Bryden: b. Apr 1869 Port Albert, Ashfield Township, Huron County, Ontario, imm. USA 1882, m. James Pratt 25 May 1887 in Douglas County, Wisconsin, m. William Handley Striker 26 May 1904 in Colfax, Washington, d. after 1930, location unknown. Martha had three children with James Pratt and one with W. H. Striker.

Martha and W. H. Striker emigrated to Biggar, Saskatchewan in 1910 with children Arthur Pratt and Ted Striker. I think they may have Pratt and Striker descendants in Canada today.

Martha and W. H. Striker moved back to the USA in 1917, living in Grants Pass, Oregon, Ashland, Oregon and Rogue River, Oregon. In 1930 she was a widow living in Rogue River with her widowed sisters Esther Bryden Brashear and Elizabeth Bryden Southern.

W. H. Striker lived in southern Oregon from 1918 to 1924, last residence Rogue River, Jackson County, Oregon. He died 19 Mar 1924 in Medford, Oregon and was buried in Woodville Cemetery, Rogue River. In May 2011, I took a photo of his gravestone, which has an incorrectly inscribed death year "1851 - 1923".

Charles Bryden
Union City, California
charles@bryden.name

I have a Doris Jeane Bryden, who's father was Stewart Bryden. He was born in MO in 1896, died in Harris Co. Tx in
06 Sep 1973. Doris's mother was Goldie Ann or Anna Smithey, born in MO and died in Tx. She had a brother Stewart Smithey Bryden who died in Texas in 1999. I do not know anything personal about Doris Jean but would like to know who she married and about her life. I am researching her mother's family line.

The Brydens from Dumphries Scotland came over on a ship named the Lovely Nelly in May of 1775. They landed at Georgetown St John's Island. Robert Bryden, wife Jane, children, James 7, William and David, twins 4 and Edward 7 months. They moved to Pictou Nova Scotia a year or so later. From there they moved to Il, Oh, and later to Ca and my branch came down to Tennessee near Chattanooga. My mother was a Bryden at birth. I think we are all related. It is a very uncommon name.

Lewiston Idaho ...Bryden central?

Lewiston is a town in Idaho USA. For some reason it has a strong Bryden connection with a Bryden sub-division, many streets (Bryden Avenue, Road, Drive, etc etc) a golf course (Bryden Canyon Golf course) and a canyon ( Bryden Canyon). Does anyone know the origin of this connection? Presumably there was a Bryden family that settled there.

A few years ago, a taxi that I was in made a wrong turning into the above noted sub-division, a somewhat surreal experience.

All the surnames appear in my family tree. Have not found any connection to them as yet.

Hi, Danette:

I am researching more information about my grandfather, John H. Shobe, and came across your grandmother's name Winifred Bryden in some of the newspaper articles I have about my grandfather. I googled your grandmother's name and just discovered your email requesting information. I sent you an email via your hotmail account, but since I have not yet heard from you, I thought I would try this account as well.

I have two copies of newspaper articles, my brother has the originals, that are about your grandmother and the fact that she was America's youngest girl pilot. She was trained to fly by my grandfather who was a famous aviator during his time (he died young at the age of 37 in a plane crash). From your note, it sounds as if your grandmother died young, too. Unfortunately, when my grandmother clipped the photos, she didn't keep dates or names of papers on them so I don't know if either article is the one you have, but I assume not because there is no mention of Lewis Yancy in either one of mine. One article is only a few short paragraphs. Another is an in-depth with some very wonderful quotes from your grandmother like " 'The world is filled with stenographers,' she explained yesterday in a warm vestibule of the City Airport hangar. 'After I have had sufficient flying experience, I want to study airplane design. And then--I shall have a profession.' " (She sounds like she was a real go-getter!) Both articles have photos of your grandmother. I also have a copy of an absolutely charming black-and-white picture of your grandmother (I'm 95% sure it's her) in the cockpit of the airplane with my grandfather. She has her hand on the flight stick and is wearing an aviator's cap. My brother, who lives on the East Coast, has the original photo. I have a copy of it. The photo was dated October 28, 1936. It was taken one month before my grandfather died.

Let me know if you want copies of any of these. My personal email is shobebiz@cox.net.

-Nancy Shobe

I think his fathers name was Edward Louis Bryden and mother was Pauline Lillian Blevins I believe. He was 2 years younger then my mother so I think he was born in 1949 or 1950? If you have any information please let me know. Thank you

Angela
hi my grandmother was Janet Bryden married to James Bryden thet]y lived in Glasgow but I had a story about one of the family leaving ireland at age of 12yrs and lived in family house on the coast of scotland. I always thought it was to do with the potato famine but not sure. Sadly my happy days in scotland as a girl did not give me much info. James was in the scots fusilers and was in first world war. I also have found a medal which is dated 1904 and is not a military medal but from a society called racobites who took the pledge.

Hi Alistair,
Many thanks for directing me to the text. Most interesting.

I am comfortable going back to my ggg grandfather, John Bryden who was born 1795 and was a baker in the town of Dumfries, but am less confident about his father. Other family trees show him as Thomas, who was born in 1768, and was married to Betty Graham, but I have no hard evidence.

Do you have any information about that branch of the Brydens?

Regards,
Ian

Tried the e-mail address given and it bounced back, so resorting to this again.

These notes may be of interest –

This interesting surname is of English locational origin from either Bredon in Worcestershire, recorded as "Breodun" in the Domesday Book of 1086, or from Breedon in Leicestershire, recorded as "Bredona" in the Danelaw Charters. The placename is composed of the British term "bre" meaning hill plus the tautologous Old English pre 7th Century addition "dun" hill. "British" (as above) refers to the extinct Celtic language of the ancient Britons. Locational names were originally given as a means of identification to those who left their village or place of origin to settle elsewhere and the surname is mainly found in Scotland and Northern England. Phelippe de Briden of Roxburghshire rendered homage in 1296. William Brydonne, is noted in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1371. Johannes de Bredun appears in the Poll Tax Return of Yorkshire (1379). In the modern idiom the surname has many variant spellings including Bryden, Brydone, Bre(e)don, Breeden, Briddon, etc.. On October 10th 1594, Luce Brydon and Edmund Murton were married at St. Mary Magdalene, Old Fish Street, London. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Ralph de Bredon, which was dated 1272, in the "Testa de Neville", Leicestershire, during the reign of King Henry 111, known as the "Frenchman", 1216 - 1272. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

See attached coat of arms.

Regards,
Ian
Hi Ian,

Thank you so much for the information you provided.

What I have been told is that Winifred died 5 days after giving birth to my mother, Deanna Sidney Johnston which would be about February 19, 1939. I believe that she died in or around Detroit Michigan. My mother did have older brother (13 months older) named Dewayne Johnston. Dewayne passed away December of 2009. My mothers fathers name was Sidney Johnston. After Winifreds death in 1939, he married Geri, last name and spelling I am not sure of. They had 11 more children together.

That is about all I know. I would love to know what the "Bryden" family crest looked like. I have the crest on my fathers side (Wayne R. West,of the "Blalock" clan or family from Scotland). If I get further information, I will post it for you on the message board. Please feel free to email me direct at gary-danette@hotmail.com. Again, thank you so much for helping me.

Hi Danette,
It is good to hear from you.

I used the e-mail address that you had given and it bounced back. Anyway...

Winifred’s father, Alec Bryden, was my grandfather’s brother. Alec’s father was William Bryden who was born in Manchester. His father, also William, was born in Dumfries, and was a house painter. His father, John, was a baker in Dumfries and was born in 1795. There is a record that his father was Thomas Bryden, born 1768 in Dumfriesshire, but I haven’t got any hard proof of that.

Winfred’s mother was Sadie Sligowski. She was born in Michigan in 1883, but her parents are given on the 1900 census as being from Germany, Poland. I haven’t been able trace her parents.

I have press cuttings from Winifred’s great achievement in gaining her licence.

So Winifred’s husband, your grandfather, was a Johnston? Would you mind giving me his Christian name so that I can research him?

Did Winifred have just the one child, your Mum?

Also, I cannot find a record of Winifred’s death. Do you have any details?

Have a look at: http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/tree/9458974/person/-796034162

Do you know anything about her sister, Fidelis?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,
Ian
Bryden African connections

I am looking for any Bryden family connections in Africa (specifically South and East). I know of a Georgina Bryden in Zambia and Malawi around 1967/68 but if anyone has any information before then I would be grateful.

My name is Danette West. My mother is Deanna Johnston. My moms , mom was Winifred Bryden. Winifred died shortly after giving birth to my mom. All I have is a newspaper article that shows Winifred Bryden from Eastern High School in Lansing MI, with the famous pilot,Lewis Yancy. It states she was the "youngest person to ever receive a federal student pilots license". It states that she was 16 years old and it is a 1931 news article. Her name was mispelled, so I have been searching for information with no luck. I would like to find out information regarding my grandmother, Winifred Bryden. My email is gary-danette@hotmail.com

Re: Manchester Brydens

I thought that the participants on this thread might be interested in the following extract from history of Brydens (see a previous post.) The connection between the unfortunate Gawane and Sym Brydene and John Bryden seems a bit tenuous to me but if you can trace a link between your Bryden family and William Anderson Bryden, this note seems to link you back into Scotland and specifically to Annan. (

If you are of a romantic bent, look up the ballad of Kinmount Willie Armstrong (certainly a relative of the Geordie Armstrang noted below), one of the most famous of Border stories... maybe there was a Bryden or two along on the ride).

Regards

Alistair Bryden

1611 The Register of the Privy Council at Dumfries reports the following: “convict as Borders and execute” . Among them were Gawane and Sym Brydene, Jamie Armstrang of Capel-gill, and Geordie Armstrang of Kynmount. (Kinmount is close to Annan, and from Annan came the John Bryden, (father of William Anderson Bryden) who settled in Manchester, and became the progenitor of this branch).
