I am searching for information on Francis Bernard Buchanan, immigrated from Ireland/England to the Washington County PA area between 1881 and 1884. His wife, Mary Francis Shanley, immigrated with sons John and Cornelius and daugther Marie/Mary about 1884. We have used DNA to establish our Buchanan lineage but cannot find the link between Wilton H Buchanan (died 2009 in WV) and Francis (Francis being my great-grandfather). My dad and Wilton are a perfect 37 marker match via FTDNA. Francis was naturalized in 1896 in Fayette CO, PA. Francis' obiturary in 1910 states he has a sister, Mrs. Anna Emerson from New York.

Help searching for adoption records in Scotland 1841 to 1858 Lady Leith Bucanan of Ross Priory and Jean Mcnicol of Dunbartan

Does anyone know if there was a particular legal process in the years 1841 to 1858 for adoption in Scotland.

I am looking for adoption papers for Lady Leith Bucanan of Ross Priory, Scotland and Jean Mcnicol (adopted) in the location of Dunbarton, Scotland. They lived at the estate of Ross Priory in Dunbartan, Scotland.

Hopefully this record will provide clues as to how siblings Jean Mcnicol, John Mcnicol and Archibald Mcnicol lost their parents prior to adoption:
Father: George Mcnicol
Mother: Mary Sinclair who both lived in Kilmaronock, Dumbarton, Scotland.

Here is some background information.
Jean Mcnicol born 1841 (Adopted maybe informally?)

Historical account:
Lady Leith Buchanan"..lost her own daughter, when she was a child and when she heard of the Mcnicol children being left without parents, she took the little girl (Jean McNicol) into her home." Wrote "Jean Bishop Robinson (nee Thompson)" whom is Jean Mcnicol's granddaughter I believe. I believe she is named after her.

I am not sure what happened to their parents and any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I know that Ross Priory is associated specifically with the Bucanan Clan and Lady Leith married a Bucanan. Jean Mcnicol was taken in by "Lady Leith" Jemima Buchanan (I believe), of Ross Priory, Scotland and husband Sir Alexander Leith Buchanan, who married in 1830.

Jeans Birth: 13 Jun 1841 in Kilmaronock, Dunbarton, Scotland.
Death: ?
Married: John Bishop 20th Nov 1886

Jeans daughter:
Mary Bishop, who married David J. Thompson in 1900.
Son: Max Bishop
Daughter: Jean Bishop Robinson (Nee Thompson)(Author of historical record, written Nov 26 1972 as quoted above.

Brother of Jean Mcnicol: John McNicol "died at Dunsholt, Auchtermuchty (Spelling?) on 29th January 1913 in his 77th Year.

Brother of Jean Mcnicol: Archibald Mcnicol, Personal 2nd Great Grandfather
Birth 4 Feb 1839 in Kilmaronock, Dumbartonshire, Scotland
Death 21 Feb 1910 in Ann Arbor City, Washtenaw, Michigan
Marriage to Helen Celest Treat 18 APR 1871 in Washtenaw County, Michigan
Fought in the Crimean War
1854-1855
55th Regiment
Arrival to the U.S. in 1866
1851 Scotland Census has Archibald at age 12 living as a boarder with John Burns age 68 and Janet Burns 62.
He is stated to be a scholar. So maybe by age 12 he had lost his parents therefore living as a boarder.

Take Care and I thank you in advance,

G20111
My Father was M H Buchanan (Tinky when younger and Buck as he got older. His parants, William J B (Bryan) 1899-1948 & Mattie Faye Buchanan 1905-1979 Her maiden name according to my fathers birth record was Landrith. Other siblings were J W, Elmer (Edward E), Evelyn Luther (Pete) and Marion all passed away. The 1930 census shows them with the last name Buchannon which is incorrect. I know that these were my family on fathers side because i knew all but my grandfather and Pete who died prior to me being born. i live in the county where the graves are becaused I buried my father there.
I am having problems tracking any of the siblings or anything prior to the 1930 census. i can only find birth record and death records for my father but nothing else on him,not even marraige to my mother.
Anyone have any info????

BUCHANANs in Montreal, Canada

Gar wrote (elsewhere), Thursday, February 09, 2012 10:13 PM

> Florence's parents were buried at the Mount Royal
> Cemetery, Montreal, and can be found on Find a Grave.

Indeed so; many thanks !

I have now had a chance to visit that WebSite, but there are only three BUCHANANs in that Cemetery (on that WebSite), of which one may be discounted, leaving a husband & wife. The record for the husband, William Oliver, is at
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Bu...;
where it confirms his wife’s name Mary Ellen Minerva Crysler – it says they had 2 girls and 7 boys, but only gives the names of three of the boys, and none of the girls.

Are they Florence Anna's parents; was she one of the two girls ?

I have Florence Anna as
b. 29 JUL 1848 at Montreal, Canada,
m. 16 JUN 1869 at Trinity Ch Montreal aged 20
d. 27 NOV 1918 at Cedar Ave, Montreal aged 70

Her husband, (Joseph) Bonham Clay (aged 29 at marriage)
b. 10 FEB 1839 at Gt Warley, Essex, England
d. 27 JUN 1916 at Montreal Canada aged 77

So I guess their graves (presumably in Montreal) have yet to be recorded for FindAGrave.

Can anyone please confirm (with a citation) that Florence was one of those two girls ? Or if she wasn't, who were her parents ?

I do have David Buchanan married to Catherine Twiner Dec. 22, 1862 in Yazoo Co. Catherine is the daughter of George Twiner (1805-1868)and wife Mary Lammons Twiner. Catherine was first married to James Horne and then to John R Boyd before her marriage to David Buchanan.

It is interesting to note that the Mrs. Sarah Buchanan in the 1841 Mississippi census in Yazoo Co was next door to Joseph W Sanders. You are sure that your Sarah was a Herring? Sarah Buchanan was living with JW Sanders in 1860. Their are of course two Sarah's who both married Buchanans. My interest lies in both the Sarah who is the mother of JW Sanders and also the Buchanan's who married into the Twiner family. Do you have any info on Nancy's brothers?

Nancy Buchanan's mother and father were Sarah Herring and John Buckhanan. They married in Claiborne Co, Ms. and John appears to have died about 1834. Sarah moved with her children to Yazoo Co. Mississippi in 1840's and appears there with her children in the 1850 census. Nancy married my Great Great Grandfather Isaac N Murphy in 1853.

There are a bunch of SWAILS/SWAILES in Livingston Co, KY in the 1800's. Two married relatives of mine - Vick & Barnes. I also have Patrick C. (Campbell?) Buchanan there at the same time - father of my 2g gm Mary Ann Vick nee Buchanan. In addition to my 2g gm I think Patrick had a daughter Elizabeth. His father was from VA and I think also had a son John and a daughter Mary Jane all b around 1800. Mary Jane m Thomas Wright. All of this is directly or indirecly documented. Patrick could have had a son David.

I show Patrick's wife was Celia Hale or Hall - no documentation for this. One tree shows Patrick m Margaret Ann Graham - no documentation - with kids not looking at all like my Patrick.

One of the Swailes girls was Mary Campbell Swailes - I think the Campbell is from her father's side so maybe there was a Campbell connection between Buchanan and Swails?

One public tree on ancestry shows a Patrick Campbell Buchanan b VA 1799 with father John and mother Nancy Wright but without a sister Mary Jane. Is this Wright connection just coincidence? Could Mary Jane have been Patrick's aunt married to a Wright cousin of his mother Nancy?

Ray Vick - tree LRAYVICK1
LRAYVICK@cox.net

James had a brother Alexander Buchanan (ca 1828/9—11 Mar 1867) who married Elizabeth Kelly (ca 1833—1871/81) on 18 Mar 1852 in Bothwell parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Like Alexander, Elizabeth was born in Ireland, but was of Neilston parish, Renfrewshire when she was married. Her maiden name is also given as Craig in some of her children's records.

Alexander and Elizabeth (Kelly) Buchanan had children:
1. Sarah Craig, b. 21 Feb 1853, Neilston, Renfrewshire, Scotland
2. Mary, b. 14 Jan 1855, Airdie, Lanarkshire, Scotland
3. John, b. ca Mar 1861, Chapelhall, Bothwell parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland
6. Robert, b. ca 1863, Longlee, Lanarkshire, Scotland
7. William, b. 16 Oct 1865, Cuilhill, Old Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland

Alexander was a coal miner and died as a result of injuries he sustained during an accident at the Heathery Knowe No. 2 mine in Baillieston.
Hello! I am Henry Freemont's great great great granddaughter and I am trying to do some research on him. I was wondering if you have found out the reason why he was in the State Penn. and why he died so young. I am sure there could be many reasons why. I am trying to help my grandmother find this out, she has come to a dead end. If you could send me anything at all that would be great! Thanks in advance!
