Hi,
have you had a look at the 1901 and 1911 English Census?

There is a James and Emma Buckle in Lambeth, London. In 1901 they have Gilbert J (14), Arthur W (12) Fred (9) Edith (7) and Harry(4) living with them.
In 1911 James is with Arthur, Frederick, Edith and Harry at 92 Cottage Grove, Lambeth, London. James was a Railway Signal Fitter and Harry was in the Cycle trade.

I don't know if you have this already, but a Harry Stanley Buckle was born Jul/Aug/Sep 1896 according to FreeBMD in Wandsworth, Greater London, Surrey.

In Jul/Aug/Sept 1918 Free BMD shows his marriage to Dyett.
Hope this helps.

Claire

I have only just found the posts on the Buckle family which you started in 2002. There are Yorkshire Buckles in my ancestry living in the mid to late 1700s about 25 miles west of Thirsk at East Witton. John Buckle lived there and had a daughter, Mary. I have not found dates for either of them, but Mary had a daughter, registered as Christiana Buckle and born a few miles away from East Witton at Spennithorne in 1793. She married James Brearey of Spofforth at Spofforth. James and Christiana moved most of their large family to Bedfordshire around 1832. Joleen

Your posting was in 2003 so this may not reach you. However, The Buckle family from the Masham-Well-Ripon area of North Yorkshire are our family. When the Buckles re-emigrated from Australia, they settled in Salt Lake City, Utah. My assumption is that they were proselytized as members of the LDS faith in Australia. Our descent is from George Green Buckle. Would love to share more information if you receive this. Carol Bruner

Glad it was of interest

The scale of the photo is not clear, It's a vertical grave stone, not a plaque, but the stones are arranged round the perimiter wall of the churchyard, so presumably don't actually mark the grave.

I just noticed the solicitors for his estate added a cheeky advert at the bottom of the gravestone?
Llewelyn & Co, Solicitors, Calcutta?

Hi Alister,

I came accross your chap's gravestone in Galle Fort, Sri Lanka last week.

Beneath are deposited the remains of Edmund Buckle, Capt in the Bengal Artillery who died of galle on his passage to England in the "Bentinck" steamer on the 19th September 1846 aged 38 years and 8 months.

I'm almost certain it was in the grounds of the Dutch Reformed Church not the Anglican Church next door which perhaps might be significant. The churches are inside the Dutch Fort which became English from 1796.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galle_Fort (oh I see why... the English church was not built until 1871).

There are many interesting & well preserved gravestones of interesting colonial pioneers. I photographed this randomly & attach it. I see it's not recorded on the net. I'd have photoed them all, but assumed they'd all be well recorded on the web by now.

Regards Geoff, Surrey (just back from holiday)

I have researched Rev Joseph Buckle who came to Australia around 1859. His parents were Thomas Buckle and Jane (Green). Joseph was born in 1830 in Masham, Yorkshire. I have his photograph and many newspaper articles, as he was the first Primitive Methodist Minister in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was a pretty wild place when he arrived. His wife was Ellen (Dresser). They were married in 1858 in Motherwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland, and they had 9 children born in Victoria and Queensland, Australia. Can share this if you are interested.

My Great Uncle was a Thomas Buckle. His sisters were, Milly (married Gert Hettache sp?), Sarah (married Danie Brink) and Anna (my grandmother, married Gert Visser). My mother's name is Sarah Susanna and her brother was Alexander Berdien Daneel Visser. I see the names Alexander and Susanna both appear in the Buckle tree. I find it so interesting, but wonder who this particular Thomas might have been. I also read that an Alexander emigrated to Barbados in 1679.

I havent got any details of his parents,or of any brothers and sisters, however, although he was brn in Sowerby he married Jane WRIGHT who came from York on 24/07/1826. They lived in Knayton not far from Thirsk, and had at least four children, William 1831, Ann 1833, Francis 1836 and John 1843. Francis married Elizabeth YOUNG on 17/12/1866 at Leake
and they moved to Thirsk where they had at least 12 children.
I sure William is related to the Sowerby Buckles, probably through his parents as Buckle is not a common name and especially with him being born in Sowberby. I would be very interested in seeing what Buckles you have managed to find in Sowerby and hopefully I will try to fill in the gaps at a later date. I am quite happy to fill you in with the Buckle family in Thirsk and beyond.

Regards
Mike Buckle

Yes, that is true. I have a copy of the Buckle Pedigree that is updated under our branch of Cuthbert Edward Buckle (1866-1936. I have started to build a family tree on Ancestry.com-Buckle-Corbett-McMurdo. ( It probably shows Stewart Searle as the author. He is my husband. I start with his account 2 years ago.) It needs more work.
I also bought 3 copies of "THE Buckle Papers" from the West Sussex Annex through Amazon, which tracks with info I have. There are pix of my grandfather, Stewart Henry Buckle, as a young boy in the archives.

That one makes far more sense than a Robert in Westmorland in the 1600s from the information I was given by the UK Buckle family member Commander Cuthbert Robert Buckle was the son of Reverand William Lewis and Mary Freeman Manly, he married Mary Charlotte they had 4 children of which Cuthbert Edward was the eldest, I have nothing on his descendents. They are through Admiral Matthew Buckle(1718) the Naval hero who was the youngest son of Christopher(1684-1707)and Sarah Wessel who built Nork House who was great grandson of Sir Cuthbert

This is in response to Deidre Helberg's enquiry relating to Thomas Buckle who came to South Africa in 1799. I am distantly related to him (I think the 5th generation). He got married in South Africa in 1806 in the Cape Province to a South African, and my father is related to the seventh child, William Henry. All the children were baptised in the Mother Church of the Afrikaans religion and I think all Buckles of the Cape is Afrikaans speaking. However a Harry Buckle arrived in Johannesburg in 1836, he became President of the Chamber of Mines, and they are English speaking. Any other way I can help, please contact me, Regards, Kay Buckle (born 1 February 1936) of Cape Town.

My records show Samuel Charles Watson Buckle having 9 children but none of them is Harry Charles. However, one of them was recorded as Charles b 1852 (don't know month).
If this isn't him then it is just possible that they could have fitted another son in between Charles and Samuel. The ones I have around that time are Margaret (b Sept 1851), Charles (1852) and Samuel (June 1854) provided Emma became pregnant again immediately after the birth of Harry. They were a pretty busy couple, family-wise, so it is possible.

The one thing which makes me think Harry is probably not a son of SCW and Emma is that all their other children were born in Peterborough and your heading suggests that Harry was born in Hampshire.

Good luck with your search.
Cheers,
Hugh

Hi Gill - seen your old post on notice board. I'm looking for descendents of Thomas Gregory Buckle [1913-1981]who married Jean Alice Shield, who was the grand-daughter of Alexander Warwick [1856-1889]. It is this Warwick line of which I'm primarily interested.

I believe Thomas Gregory Buckle was the brother of Joseph Harvey Buckle and your husband's uncle.

I should be interested to know if you have any information which may help.

Many thanks

Roy

Dear all,

I am descended from William and Betty Buckle of Nettleton. I have been looking at the descendents of Walter and his two wives Mary Bethel and Mary Gibbs. Happy to exchange information.

WILLIAM BUCKLE, Great V Grandfather

Son of Walter Buckle and Mary nee Bethel
Husband of Betty (Elizabeth) West
Father of Hester (Esther) Noad

Also Father of infant Mary, Sarah, Hannah, Elizabeth and Mary

William Buckle was baptised in Nettleton Parish Church on 11th November 1740 the eldest son of Walter and Mary Buckle, Farmers of Nettleton, Wiltshire.

On 7th November 1769 William Buckel of Nettleton married Betty West of Nettleton in the parish church. William made his mark and Betty signed her name. The witnesses were Henry West who signed his name and Jane Raven who made her mark.

William and Betty (sometimes Elizabeth) had at least six daughters who were born between 1770 and 1789 and were baptised in Nettleton Parish Church. Their eldest daughter, Esther (Hester), seems to have had an illegitimate child in 1788. She later married Isaac Noad and both moved to Gloucestershire where they endured ill health and considerable poverty.

In 1773 Betty received a legacy of £30 from her father’s estate and William received £5 in 1786 from his father’s estate.

Betty Buckle was buried on 22nd March 1823 aged seventy-five-years and William Buckle was buried on 18th April 1824 aged eighty-four-years.

Their children were Great V Aunts and Uncles:

HESTER NOAD, Great IV Grandmother

Daughter of William Buckle and Betty (nee West)
Wife of Isaac Noad
Mother of James Noad

Also Mother of Thomas, Isaac and Henry

Hester the eldest daughter of William and Betty Buccle was baptised on 4th June 1770 at Nettleton.

There is an entry in the baptism register at Nettleton recording the baptism on 18th April 1790 of William the base born son of Hester Buckle, the child having been born on 27th December 1788. As yet I have found no further reference to this child.

Isaac Noad married Hester Buckle at Nettleton on 30th September 1793. He was described as being of West Kington and he made his mark in the register and she was described as of Nettleton and she too made her mark. The witnesses were James Clack who made his mark and Edith Bullock who signed the register.

They had four sons – Thomas, James, Isaac and Henry who were born between the years 1794 and 1803. By the year 1799 Isaac Noad and his family had moved to Leonard Stanley where their son Isaac was baptised on 3rd or 9th February 1800 and where they were in receipt of poor relief:

‘In the first half of 1799 Isaac Noad received seven shillings and sixpence and later a “Bush of flower” worth thirteen shillings. In the second half of the same year we find that he had one pound two shillings and a penny in “monies etc.”, two shillings and sixpence for his settlement examination and finally fourteen shillings and nine pence for “Removing his goods”. The last item tells its own sorry tale. Isaac and Hester Noad were very poor, they needed help but Leonard Stanley was under no obligation to give it.’

By October 1800 they had settled in Slimbridge where they were once again in receiving poor relief and this continued until at least 1823. Their third son, Isaac Noad, was buried at Slimbridge on 10th April 1802 and their youngest son, Henry Noad, was born there in 1803 and baptised at Slimbridge Parish Church on 7th August 1803.

Hester Noad was buried on 18th January 1829 in Slimbridge aged sixty-two-years.

SARAH BUCKLE, Great V Aunt

Sarah Buckle, daughter of William and Elizabeth, was baptised on 15th November 1772 at Nettleton

MARY BUCKLE, Infant Great V Aunt

Mary Buckle, daughter of William and Betty, was buried on 25th May 1779 at Nettleton

HANNAH BUCKLE, Great V Aunt

Hannah Buckle, daughter of William and Elizabeth, was baptised on 14th July 1782 at Nettleton.

ELIZABETH BUCKLE, Great V Aunt

Elizabeth Buckle, daughter of William and Elizabeth, was born on 25th December 1783 and baptised on 30th May 1784 at Nettleton.

MARY BUCKLE, Great V Aunt

Mary Buckle, daughter of William and Elizabeth, was born on 22nd February 1789, baptised on 2nd March 1789 at Nettleton.

Regards

Richard Barton
I've now got most (if not all) of the BUCKLE family baptisms, marriages and burials in my notes.... extracted from the Malmesbury, Wiltshire parish registers from the early 17th century to 1812.

This includes names similar to yours....
~ in particular it seems one of the first members of the family in Malmesbury is a Walter (alone with a number of Edwards, Josephs and so on!)

I'm attempting to prove a connection between Joseph BUCKLE of Malmesbury, baptised in 1772, and my ancestress, whose baptism in Deevon... I cannot find, but she is beleived to have been born in the same parish as where Joseph and his wife Sage are living (and die) in the 1850s.

~ thwarted... I might add... but some people on Genes Reunited who are claiming Nettleton families are deriving from Joseph of Malmesbury, without providing any reliable evidence. LOL!!!

Yorkshire is one of the largest counties. Suggest you try the Yorkshire list Rebecca or even Cumbria ,Westmorland is part of Cumbria now and is bordered by Yorkshire, Lancashire etc.so if there is not a Cumbria list West Yorkshire or West Ridings I would think, someone there local to the area would know more. There is some info here about Westmorland
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/WES/
Says that parish records for Westmorland churches are held at Kendal which is in the Lake District as well as Bishops trnscripts but does say they should be available through LDS and parish registers are also available on Hugh Wallis site, which you are probably aware of, but there are a lot of towns in Westmorland but there is other useful information on this site I did find Buckles in Brough under Stainmore, there was Robert Bucle who had a father Christopher Bucle in 1584, but that's after Buckles moved south, whether there is link a generation or two back, maybe? but the Buckles were aleady using the spelling Buckle that's in the Visitation not Bucle but you never know they may have retained the old spelling up North a bit longer, Sir Cuthbert had a brother James and Christopher born after 1533, a Christopher Bucles had a James in 1577 and Robert in 1584,so that may be the link and if so Sir Cuttbert isn't his ancestor but they share an ancestor there was a Robert Bucle born to Robert Bucle in 1563 , then there was Robert Buckle born to Robert Buckle in 1640 , Cliburn also has Robert Buckle I also checked parishes wthin a 5 mile radius of Brough the only other was a Robert 1845 Warcup I have checked several other but not all yet there are so many and no luck so far with the family names. But Sir Cuthbert isn't mentioned under Brough on the parish records but like mpost place there would be a lt missing. I don't have a Christopher 1699 sorry I thought we had sorted this before think it must be a typo for 1629, I do have couple after 1711 but you would have those too

I will be in Yorkshire in July, and I am hoping to do some research. Do you have any suggestions on where I should begin?
Where are you getting your info on Christopher born in 1699?
Cuthbert (1533-1594)'s line of Christophers go as follows:
Sir Christopher , only son of Cuthbert, 1586-1660
Sir Christopher, 1629-1712
Christopher, esquire 1654-1706
Christopher, 1684-1759
Christopher 1711-1783
I am interested in your Christopher 1699?
Thank you.
Rebecca
