Hey Cuz I know you posted this a while back and you probably know more but in case you don't. Grandma's maiden name was pryor. Her father's name was Frank Pryor but I don't remember her mother's name, because uncle Larry and the others called her mama and called our grandmother by her first name. As far as granddaddy goes they called his mother ma-dear shortened from mother dear. Grandaddy had 2 brothers I believe and they helped him build grandaddy's house that he lived in. They both died and I don't believe either had children. The best historian in our family that has done research and remembers most is our aunt Ruth

It might turn up eventually. A lot more of those pension apps have been appearing on line. The reason I'm doubtful of it is that people in his generation rarely had middle names. It didn't start to be common until the 19th century. There are late 18th century examples, but he was born around 1748, so you wouldn't have expected him to have multiple given names unless his parents were real trendsetters or there was some special circumstance. Middle names were exceedingly rare among the British colonists before the Revolution. If you see it, it's almost always German. They show up a little earlier in England and Jamaica, but you can still put a pretty good lower limit on someone's birth year if you see it.
http://www.genfiles.com/legal/MiddleNames.htm

Thank you for responding, Cousin Eric! I just got my DAR application over the weekend. Jesse would be my GGGG grandfather. My father was James Robert, the son of George T. Buckner. Dad was born in Chrisman (Il) but had lived most of his life in Indiana. I knew that Jesse had been used previously by a DAR member as her "Dar Patriot", so a lot of my work was already done.

Right now, I am trying to find the "Buckner cemetery", where hopefully I will find the grave of William Buckner (son of Jesse). It is believed to be somewhere around HIGHLAND or Highland township (perhaps North of Worthington, Indiana). I have found the graves of Buckners in the Calvertsville (In) cemetery...but have not found William nor Harlan.

Maybe that's a good thing...I am a softie and just cry at those old graves anyway..LOL. Where are YOU located, Eric?
Your softy cousin, Erin Buckner Dulin of Brazil, Indiana

Since Jesse donated money to the Rev. War effort he is listed as a patriot. Another cousin, Sjauna Bauer has provided documentation for our family to qualify for DAR.
Oh, I see from other websites that the Garrets lived in Stafford Co. That really makes Anthony Buckner your leading candidate - the location and dates fit almost perfectly for him. You should get your primary sources together and lay out the real primary data on the family. You'll probably find some subtle clue in that.

Re: Frances Elizabeth Buckner

If you're fairly confident that she was a Buckner by birth and born around 1680, I can give you four possibilities.

John Buckner (the well known immigrant) could have been having children that late. He was probably born between 1620 and 1635, so it's not totally out of the question.

John had 4 known sons and Richard is the first one mentioned in VA records - he was probably the oldest and was likely around 20 in 1680, perhaps not even that old. It's possible he's the father, but I think it's unlikely, and the other three brothers were probably all too young.

There was also an Anthony Buckner who was almost certainly John's brother. Anthony did have at least one known child who was probably young adult in the 1700-1710 period, so it's quite reasonable to suppose that he had sisters of similar age. Anthony died in 1689-1690 and very little is known about him otherwise.

In addition to Anthony, there was an Andrew Buckner who died around 1687 and was certainly an adult by 1680. It's not clear who he was, but he was certainly related to John and Anthony. There's no evidence that he had any children, though he had land and he had connections to the Washingtons.

I think if I was betting on it, I'd bet she was either John's or Anthony's daughter. If she was Anthony's, you might see connnections to the Ellis family, since Anthony Buckner Jr. married an Ellis.

If they had a son born around 1701, she would have to have been one of the older children. Richard was probably born in the early 1660s. I wouldn't put much stock in it unless you can find a contemporary source for it. There's a lot of really wrong stuff about this family floating around.

Hello Cousins, I am working on the same line as you. I have JOHN BUCKNER ("The Imigrant" b. 1631 in Oxfordshire, England and migrated to Gloucester, Va in 1667) and DEBORAH ANN FERRES (b. 1633 in Bucks, London England) as the parents of Frances Elizabeth Buckner. I think that she may have been an only child.

I am retired and am gathering Buckner information for membership in DAR. Any Buckner information would be appreciated. My line starts with Richard (Rychard) Buckner and goes thru his son John (the imigrant). Erin Buckner Dulin of Indiana

He belongs to a cluster of Buckners who migrated to NC in the late 1700s. There's a lot of circumstantial evidence that links them to Edward Buckner of Sussex Co. VA (http://www.buckbd.com/genea/EdwardBucknerwill1767.html), so the most obvious assumption is that Jesse and his brothers Benjamin and John Buckner were Edward's nephews, perhaps the sons of Lawrence Buckner Jr. There are people who claim that they were sons of John and Sarah Buckner of Caroline Co. VA and Currituck Co. NC, but I've never seen any evidence to support that idea. This page has pretty much every thing I know about Lawrence: http://www.buckbd.com/PhpGedView/individual.php?pid=P5700985...

I am looking for information on Jesse Buckner (born to John and Sarah Buckner). Jesse was married to Martha Pyle in 1765 and died in Siler City, North Carolina in 1826.

I know that Jesse was a Baptist minister. Was THIS Jesse Buckner in the military? I am getting conflicting answers. I am hoping to get into the DAR, and I am stuck here. Was Jesse's son, (William Buckner) born in 1782 in Chatam, N. Carolina ever in the military?
They're unrelated. William Bucknor Lewis was actually Anglo-Irish. Elizabeth Bucknor, daughter of Richard Bucknor of Waterford, married William Lewis in the early-mid 1700s. They had a son Rev. William Lewis (1725-1795), who had a son Rev. William Lewis (1767-1859), and the chaplain Rev. William Bucknor Lewis (1798-1870) was his son.

(See Burkes Genealogical and heraldic history of the landed gentry of Great Britain & Ireland (Volume 2), p. 259 - http://books.google.com/books?id=Ha0EAAAAIAAJ&lpg=PA259&...).

This makes Helen Lewis Lawrence one of the few people whose ancestry can be traced to Rychard Buckner of Cumnor (d. 1548), since Richard Bucknor of Waterford was the son of John Bucknor of Limerick (d. 1670), the son of John Bucknor of Dromore (b. 1595), the son of Thomas Buckner of Whitley, the son of Thomas Buckner of Whitley, the son of Rychard Buckner of Cumnor.

There is some very strange coincidence going on here. Just have a look at the story of HELEN (LEWIS)LAWRENCE who was the daughter of WILLIAM BUCKNER LAWRENCE in this page - http://www.levantineheritage.com/testi32.htm

The three names 'LEWIS', 'LAWRENCE', and 'BUCKNER' all appear in this thread and in the Helen Lawrence life story.

What makes it all the more strange is that a hundred years later, my sister-in-law, Nadia, was living in that very same house in Soke, Turkey when her first husband was Assistant Manager at MacAndrew Forbes Liqorice Factory.

Nadia later divorced her husband and some years afterwards married Corbin BUCKNER who was from Tennessee. So the name of Buckner kind of connects two different families to that one house - which I well remember myself.

I visited Nadia and Corbin once when they were living in Virginia where they had a home at Frederiksburg.

After Corbin died, Nadia went to Rockford Tennessee where she now lives with her Buckner in-laws.

Is there some possibility that the Tennessee Buckners are connected to your Buckners?

Regards Malcolm Hutton

He died in Kaufman Co., TX in 1896 of pneumonia and was buried in a pauper's grave. He worked for the railroad and was in texas when he became ill. The dates on his "tombstone" are incorrect. They are 1867-1896. I suspect that when his wife died during WWII the family wanted to put GWB's name on the stone with hers but no one knew his birth year. This threw me off for ages when I was looking for GWB.

My mystery is solved; yours remains.

My original query inferred from the interaction with the Buckners that Jane, the wife of Reuben Coutts, was formerly Jane Buckner.

She was not.

The answer is found in the link in your earlier posting. You mentioned that Reuben Coutts and Philip Buckner apparently were partners owning 7000 acres in KY. This was stated in the case of Coutts v. Greenhow, 2 Va. (Munf.) 363 (1814).

After reading the entire case, the following facts emerge:

REUBEN COUTTS had lived many years with JANE NEW and having several children by her out of wedlock decided to marry her. On 10 Sep 1799 he executed a marriage settlement which conveyed his property to trustees Samuel McCraw and others for her benefit. He then married the said Jane New on 17 Sep 1799, thereby legitimating his five children by her. He died 17 Nov 1806.

Greenhow tried to satisfy a debt owed him by Coutts, who had died, by going after the property in the settlement. The Superior Court of Chancery for the Richmond District found for Greenhow and the Coutts family appealed. The Supreme Court of Appeals unanimously sided with the Coutts.

This takes care of my question about who Reuben's wife was (showing my original theory to be wrong), but leaves you all the questions about Lewis and Philip.

Reuben was the illegitimate son of Patrick Coutts, Merchant, of Belvedere (will dated 11 Dec 1776, proved Jan Henrico Court 1777, re-recorded 6 Jul 1784 Henrico WB 1, p 149). The MOTHER is UNKNOWN. Reuben was the only beneficiary named, but was described only as "presently my Clerk and of my family," and was left "all that tract of land known by the Fishing and the Ferry." All other lands passed by intestacy into the control of William Coutts.

In time, Patrick and the trustees sold an island in the James River to Bartlett Still, who resold it to Alexander Sharp. As the focus of my research is on the island, my exploration of the Coutts and Buckner families now seems to be finished.

Thanks for the discussion.
Re: Lewis Buckner of Chesterfield County, VA

OK, Phillip Buckner (1747-1820), Coutts' partner, had at least three brothers, John Buckner (probably the eldest and alive in Caroline Co. VA in 1764 and 1774), Thomas Buckner (1739-1777), and William Buckner (ca 1745-ca 1822). William had several children born in the 1780s, John was definitely married to a Margaret, and Thomas may have left a widow named Elizabeth when he died in 1777. It's looking like either or both Thomas and John may have died and left some orphans, namely Haley Buckner (1759-1819), William Buckner (ca 1761-ca 1836), Mary Buckner (ca 1765-?), and Presley Buckner (1769-1838). Thus Lewis and Jane could pretty reasonably be other members of that family. The name Lewis fits with Haley and Presley, all of them being prominent surnames in the area. Look for connections to Currituck Co., NC, Caroline Co. VA and Washington Co. VA, and there's a tradition in Mary Buckner's line that her father served in the Revolution, in case you see any indications of that.

I am also researching African American Buckner families. At the moment, I am trying to find information on Edward Buckner who married Bessie Henderson in Kansas City, Jackson County, MO on December 12, 1904.
