Harmstead - Weaver

Gail,
I am trying to find the connection between our two families.

In 1947, John S Harmstead (I believe 1912-1970), while living in Warren, Wyoming, mailed the original Weaver family Bible to the PA Genealogical Society. The Bible belonged to George's parents Henry Weaver and Anna Mary Nagle of Philadelphia.

John did not know how the Bible got to his parents, but suspected that the link may have been his grandmother Susan Kinsley, wife of Charles H. Harmstead.

Do you have any information on the connection between the Harmsteads and Weavers of Philadelphia?
Thanks for your help,
Carl Weaver
Hi Peter!

I am descended from the John Budd who came from Chichester, and settled in New Haven in 1637, after coming over on the "Hector". He later founded Southold, and Rye New York. They say Rye was named for the Rye in England, where the family resided for some time.

I am planning a trip to England next year, and would love to find out all I can about the English Budd's. Any info would be greatly appreciated, and I will gladly share all I know.

Have you found any answers since your post on the NY Budd's? Some New York Budd's ended up in New Jersey. Mount Olive Township. This was John Budd, who married Mary Prudence Strang. He was descended from the John Budd 1599-1670, who came to New Haven on the ship "Hector" around 1637. They came from Chichester, England. Their history goes back to the Doomsday Book, where a Lord Budd had his manor taken from him by William the Conqueror.

John Budd 1599-1670 actually built a house in 1649, that still stands today in Cutchogue, Long Island. A National landmark. He was a tailor, but also a furniture dealer. Very well off. This is proven just from the materials used to build the house. The white pine trees in the area, were designated to be used only for ship masts, but ended up as ceiling beams in "The Old House".

So if you have any questions about this Budd line, or others, I could help.

Wow....
I posted a message back in 2007 on Ancestry but never had any replies... I had forgotten about this section of Ancestry... and was just browsing tonight and found your BUDD interest.

Here goes:
Nathaniel Budd (my 3 x Gt. Grandfather) m: Hannah Harper .. December 15, 1795 Fillongley.

They had 10 children.. one of them being Nathaniel Budd (my Gt Gt. Grandfather) born 1816 Fillongley and he married Ellen (Helen) Bagnall in 1839..
He started N.Budd & Son in 1853. Eventually moved to 265 Aston Road, Gosta Green, Birmingham...they lived and worked there.
As you rightly said... Aston University is now built upon it. I will have to check some maps.. but I think 265 is actually under the Students Union.

I have photos of the old shop (as we used to call it) I did go there!! My father was born at 265 Aston Road... so was his mother, her sister and brother.

My father eventually ran the business.

So what relation are you to Nathaniel Budd and Hannah Harper.

Await to hear from you more...
Hello... I have just read your post about Thomas Budd not wanting to be a printer.

Are you able to give me some more information. I have several Nathaniel Budd's in my tree. One was a marquee and tent manufacturer that came from Fillongley, Warwickshire and had a business in Gosta Green, Aston, Birmingham. His son Nathaniel was a master engraver (printer I presume) that had a business in Wolverhampton. The Budd tree starts with Nathaniel Budd marrying Hannah Harper in 1795. One of his sons Nathaniel 1816 - 1874... his son Nathaniel 1844 - 1916... Any connections?

Georgie (female)

Re: Charlotte BUDD nee Lambourn (HAMPSHIRE)

Hello -

Benjamin Budd was my G-G-G-Grandfather.

On the Budd side first: there is a problem because he was a member of a family that were, from later censuses, all born in Newton Valence (with the exception of a sister born in Chawton in 1789). The earliest births, those of at least the first sister (Martha (bap. 1789, August) and then Henry (baptised 10th July 1792) are the children of Henry and Martha Budd. This appears to be Henry Budd (1771-?) and Martha Browning (?1766-?).

More children come as one can see from the later census returns:

Mary (about 1794)
Thomas (about 1796)
John (about 1800).

Then there comes

Sarah (1807)
Benjamin (1809)
James (1808)

All of these dates are approximate, because unfortunately the Newton Valence christenings records appear to be missing between 1794-1810 I think!

Note that in many trees in Ancestry.com, Benjamin's date of birth is given as 1789 - this is not correct and is based on a misreading of one of the census returns. He died in 1881 in Alton, and I have the photograph of him from Alton museum. He worked as a carter on Lye Farm in Colemore for many years, and is recorded as having saved the farm from burning down in 1871 (Sunday June 25) -perhaps it was on this occasion that the photo was taken!

Now on to the problems, which are annoying. The first thing is that in the 1841 census of Newton Valence, there is an elderly couple living there - Henry Budd and Mary Budd, both born around 1770. This might simply be the Henry and Martha Budd of the earlier births. However, it's more difficult than that. In 1851, Mary Budd, now at a great age (she died in 1854 at age 83), is found living with the Chase family (who Sarah Budd married into in 1830), at Privett. She is thus undoubtedly the mother of at least Sarah, and thus presumably of Benjamin and James who are younger.

I haven't checked this personally, but Martha Browning is usually put down as born 1766 in Chawton. However, the 1851 census has Mary Budd born in around 1770/1 (as does her death certificate) in Farringdon/Farrington. Thus it seems that these are really not the same people.

However, Henry and Mary must be the parents of Sarah Budd; and on James Budd's marriage certificate I think that his father is given as Henry.

I am now checking further into this, but the most reasonable solution to this would be that the Henry is the same for both sets of children (note the break in the middle!) and that his first wife (Martha) died and he remarried the slightly younger model of Mary. I will post again if I get any more information about this. The only slight flaw in this is that I've seen a death date for the Henry of Henry-and-Martha fame given as 1810 which of course would not fit with him being still alive in 1841, but of course this might not be correct. I see someone has worked out a fabulous tree going back from Henry to (eventually) Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine! But I have no idea of course about how solid the links are!

On the Lambourn(e) front, I have the marriage record from Newton Valence (Colin Pink kindly looked it up for me some years ago):

Benjamin Budd of Newton Valence married Charlotte Lambourne of Newton
Valence on 14th July 1835
in the presence of John Lambourne and Caroline Lambourne.

Colin kindly went on to write:

Charlotte Lambourne was baptised 17 February 1815, her father and mother
were John and Mary, he was a labourer.
She had a sister Sally, baptised 30th April 1817
and another Elizabeth, baptised 6th June 1819
and a brother Henry, baptised 11th October 1822

Benjamin and Charlotte Budd had their first child:
Sally, baptised 3rd July 1836
and a brother William, baptised 21st October 1838
and another brother John, baptised 16th May 1841
and a sister Caroline, baptised 8th October 1844
and another brother Benjamin, baptised 5th April 1846
and another sister Mary Ann, baptised 7th January 1849
and another brother Samuel, baptised 2nd March 1851
and another brother Henry, baptised 6th November 1853

John Lambourne and Mary Carter both of Newton Valence (Charlottes parents)
had their banns read on 2nd 9th and 16th May 1802.
They were married on 24th May 1802 by Edmund White (Vicar) in the presence
of William Stubbs and Sarah Carter.

Hope that's some help! I think I have some more info about the Lambournes, but will have to dig for it!

Likewise cuz. It's a funny thing about Rhoda, I serendipitously found the record of her marriage last night as I was looking for records to support the information I was sending you about my BUDD line (i.e. John Budd and Charlotte Denman).

I'm going to travel to England for three months starting in February 2012 to conduct research for a historical fiction novel I am writing for my MFA grad school thesis. I will also conduct family history research on my (our) BUDD line while I am there. It seems the best place to begin is with John BUDD's parents which I have as James BUDD (b. 1794 Cocking, Sussex, England) and Mary CARTER (b.1789 in Sussex, England). I'm wondering how far back you go with BUDD's and if you would like me to look anything up for you while I am there.

Thrilled to make your acquaintance Karyn!

Warmest Regards
Anne Marie

I believe the above John BUDD is in fact my paternal great great grandfather and Charlotte DENMAN is my great great grandmother, however they had more children than William Henry BUDD and Charlotte's year of death would have to be after 1851 because she appears on the 1851 Oxford County, Ontario. Also my great grandfather was born around 1855. The following is a list of the children I know for certain John BUDD and Charlotte DENMAN had:

Mary A. Budd b. 1842,
Charlotte Budd b. 1844,
William H. Budd b. 1845,
James Budd, b 1846,
George Budd. b 1848,
Richard Budd b 1851-1855,

Rhoda (also spelled Roda) BOXALL I believe was previously married to James JOHNSTON (also spelled JOHNSTONE) (married on March, 7, 1850) prior to marrying John BUDD. They had at least one daughter (Elza, not sure of spelling). I have not been able to locate a death certificate for Chalrotte, have you?

So now I think I have finally solved this problem, after many years of wondering!

It is clear that the first group of children in Newton Valence were the children of Martha Browning and Henry Budd. However, there is a burial record for Marth Budd on 20 Jun 1801 in Newton Valence (possibly this was a death in childbirth to John). Henry Budd (noted as a widower) then remarried, also in Newton Valence, to Mary Swain on 12 Aug 1802, and she was thus the mother of his later children Sarah, James and Benjamin.

Hello Harry, good to hear from you. It's entirely possible, if you take a look at : http://www.communigate.co.uk/hants/buddfamilyofhampshire/pag... you'll see that there's a Henry Budd (1839) however that Henry married Jane (I believe). Take a look at the site, there's some great and very accurate info on there. If it's not the 'Henry' that you're looking for there may always be another connection. Happy hunting,
Dan

Hello, Budd researchers. Both my father and I recently had our DNA tested at 23andMe.com. Among lots of other health and ancestry data, they determine which haplogroup men's Y-DNA belongs to. This is the DNA that is passed down exclusively from father to son via the Y chromosome.

I'm hoping to find other Budds who are willing to do the test in order to see which Budd families from which geographical locations are related.

I myself descend from an American Budd family that came from Cornwall in the UK via Devon to the United States: first Ohio, then Michigan, then to Illinois where my father was born. I have known male Budd relatives in Michigan, Illinois, and in British Columbia in Canada.

If any male Budds are up for it, please get a hold of me. Check out http://23andme.com for more info.

1837 ad run by Joseph BUDD of newark, NJ

Hi,

I just posted an old ad announcing a meeting to discuss a proposed railroad. This ad was run by Joseph BUDD of Newark, NJ, and the meeting was to take place at BUDD's Tavern. The ad mentions "tomorrow evening, the 6th," so I assume that it actually ran for at least 2 days, beginning on the 5th.
This was scanned from an original issue (NOT microfilm!) of The Newark Daily Advertiser newspaper (Newark, New Jersey) dated January 6, 1837, and you can see it online here:

http://theoldentimes.com/josephbudd01061837essexnj.html
I hope it's helpful!

Barbara
http://theoldentimes.com/old_news_nj.html
http://theoldentimes.com/ads.html
http://theoldentimes.com

My great grandfather was Arthur Charles Budd. His second daughter was born immediately after arriving in the states. Her name was Marjorie Rosa Budd. My grandma lived with us for 9 years and passed in 2006. If you have information on this part of the Budd line, I'd love share information. I hope all is well.

Cheers,
Stephen
