My great grandfather was born in Ballymeena, Co Antrim in 1867.He married Sarah Newitt in London 1899 and fathered a daughter Sarah(my grandmother)born in Oct 1900. I believe he never saw her as he was a merchant seaman. He died in a lunatic asylum in Avondale,Auckland, New Zealand in 1902. Does anybody know anything more about him, paricularly his ancestors?

Yes - we have traced the lineage to Mary Ann Lumgair and Ann Brown Buick... Elizabeth Brown may explain her middle name.
Thanks for the info! Currently I am just doing the 14 day trail, so my capabilities on the site are limited.

Yes and maybe no.... Your family line is descended from William Buick x Mary Ann Lumgair. I suspect (but have never been able to prove) that your William is the granson of my ancestors William Buick and Elizabeth Brown. This is conjecture only. Your William 1797-1861 was (I believe) the son of Peter Buick and Jean Watt (would have to check his death cert to confirm). My William had a son Patrick ch.1771 (born, married and died before statutory registration). BUT, back then Peter and Patrick were entirely interchangable, Peter simply being the anglified form of the Celtic Patrick.
So that's my theory.
Anyway, do you have ancestry membership as there are a couple of reasonably extensive family trees posted there for your Buick family.
Cheers
Janice N'

This may relate to your lineage and if anyone can help me fill in the blanks that would be great!

Ann Brown Buick (born 1835, died 1909) was my Great Grandfather's mother - my great grandfather is James H. Buick. He was born in Arbroath in 1863. At some point he came to the US and settled in Vermont. He died in 1916 of Tuberculosis after marrying Rose Lassor and having 9 children, the youngest being my grandmother. My cousin who is doing the research has also linked a Mary Ann Lumgair as Ann Brown Buick's mother.

Please send me any insight should this link to your research!

Thanks,
Mel

I am looking for the biological parents of Lela Vivian Buick (my grandmother), born April 22, 1900 in Hartford, Missouri, death November 1, 1993 in Bend, Oregon. She married John Wilmer Yelton. I have her parents names as William Jefferson Buick and Ella Corneley Little. I have no supportive documentation for these names and I'm suspicious because I can find absolutely no information about any of these people. I know that her parents divorced so I am not even certain of her birth surname. Any information would be helpful.

I met her sister Helen Dorward Buick (Nell) on several occasions as well as her daughter Liz Yeaman.
I have several Buicks in my tree, and actually one that follows the tradition of passing on the mothers maiden name as a middle name.

Edith May Buick, my grandmother, born 1924, Hamilton Ontario. Father Benjamin David Buick, born 1890 - 1960 in Belfast, Antrim, Ireland. He married Rose Nellie Cheater. Benjamim's father, John Buick married Charlotte Hodson (or Charlotte Marks, there is some dispute in the name) and that is where my trail ends. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and best of luck to everyone searching!

No,
our Nicholas was Nicholas Craig White Buick, was married to Margaret Wilson in 1879 and moved to New Zealand that same year. My uncle Robert was born in 1886, lost his right leg at Passchendale WW1 then operated a high country station of some 32,000 acres for many years. He had 5 children, my cousins that I am personally aquainted with and died in 1959.
I don't think he could be the same one, sorry.

Hi Colin,
yes, the Robert Ballingall Buick could well be a fit. My Great Grand Father was Robert Buick, born in County Antrim in Northern Ireland. He married a Martha White and gave that family name to 2 of his offspring. One Martha White Buick and my Grand Father, Nicholas Craig White Buick. So the tradition of giving the mother's maiden name as a middle name could be a clue.
You may want to contact me directly at aljbuick@yahoo.ca

Sorry you have wet & windy, we are currently having beautiful mid to upper teens weather here when it should be below zero.

Hsve a good one, Alan Buick

Hi Colin,
we are only guessing that she was my Great Great Grandfather's wife. If her death occurred in Northern Ireland then she is more than likely the right one. This Buick that is referred to as old John Buick within our family moved from Scotland to Ireland sometime in the early 1800s. he has become the dead end of our ancestry search having left no record of where he came from or his birth place.
If you can make a connection we, the Buick family, would greatly appreciate your information.
Other than that here's a big HI from a very distant relative, one Alan Buick, (born in New Zealand), living in Canada.

I am searching for any connection with an Allison Buick from Scotland. Possibly m. John Sime, had 2 d and 1 son (Christina, Jean and John). John b. 12/13/1901 in Dundee. They lived at 46 Kemback St. Allison may actually have been Alice Robertson, but my mother is named Allison Buick after her G-m, and my daughter also is Allison Buick after her G-m. My g-f (John b in 1901) immigrated to the US in the 1920s. I believe his sisters married an Eirce and a McHattie. Very difficult to track down details on his parents. Any help would be appreciated! Lynn

Gwenda,
Replying to your email date 5 Feb 2003. I am replying for Edward (Ted) and John Buick from Melb Australia. They are descendants of James Buick who married Agnes Robertson. Also John Buick married Frances Filmore. John Buick and Frances died at Kangaroo Island Australia. They appear to relate to some of the names you have mentioned in your email.
Kaye Graham.

Thanks, have not given up hope just yet it's just a family puzzle that may take time to solve ie Agnes had a son to someone else the son was called David Amos (searched under Amos not found anything) plus there is a family rumour that William Henry Buick changed his name to join the army (can't think why) but I'm sure I'll solve it.
Kindest Regards
Steve

Steve, just because you can't find a marriage record on Scotland's People, it doesn't mean they weren't married. Quite a few parishes have gaps in the records, and there were others which were in such poor condition that they were unable to be scanned. There is a section on the website which lists the records available for each parish, so you could check that out.

There were also various forms of marriage in Scotland, all of which were / are recognised under Scots law, but not necessarily recorded. If they claim to have been married then they probably were!

Pete.

scotlandspeople.gov.uk is without doubt the best site and although it is not free, it works out at about $2:00 to view any certificate. Broad single name searches produce mush to think about and I find it well worth the money. 30 credits are purchased by credit card on a secure line at six pounds sterling per set. Careful use of the site reduces costs. Do NOT search for single names, that uses a credit up. It is much better to have a full page of possible names for the same credit. Hey! I am a Scot, my money is worked for.

He died in 1957 at the age of 74 so I'm putting his birth at round 1883.

I know he was born in Scotland and we are told it was Glasgow but then the family moved to London. He married Agnes Smith but unable to find anything on marriage index. They had there first child in 1921. Robert's dad was John Buick and that's all we know about him. I understand that some of their descendants may have moved to England or Ireland. James and Agnes were my great, great grandparents and I would like to find out who James`s parents were - I have three possible sets of parents at the moment! If anyone can help I would love to hear from you. Also, if anyone knows anything of a Francis Ann Filmer, born Canterbury 1825 (married John Buick) or Sarah Harwood, born somewhere in England in 1842 (I know it is a long shot - she married someone with the surname of Littledike, but I do not know the Christian name) I would be pleased to hear.

I don't know if this is of any help to you, Donald, but my husband's family tree goes back to Dundee and St Vigeans [a village next door to Arbroath].
We have a Henry Buick b.St Vigeans 1831 son of William Buick b.1805 son of another Henry - birth date unknown so far. William Buick was a canvas weaver and married an Isabel Silver Burnett in 1829.
This [1836] Henry's siblings were William, John, David, Charlotte, Jean, Mary and Stephen. Are these names familiar?
I can't tell you who he married but he'd be about the right age. I'm visiting Edinburgh Register House next week to do some work on our Buicks. I can't promise, but I'll try and fit in Henry.
