Lt. Col. John Bull

Lt Col John Bull, middle initial C or P, was a officer in Cabell's Arkansas Cavalry, at the time of the battle at Pilot Knob, in Missouri. His unit captured Union Major James Wilson, for the second and final time on the last day of the battle. Mj Wilson had gone into the fight carrying a silver plated Smith and Wesson model 2, pistol, engraved Major James Wilson Cav. 3rd M. S. M. 1864. He should have lost that pistol when captured the first time. I would like to hear from any descendants of Lt Col Bull, on whether by some chance that pistol ended up in his estate, as "spoils of the war"

Re: Bull family of Hartford

I believe I am my Charles may be the s/o Jonathan, s/o Jonathan, s/o Jonathan, s/o Thomas and Susannah. What I am wondering is if my Charles Bull, in Hillsdale/Austerlitz NY could be traveling back and forth to Hartford at different times. I have a timeline of 135 different events where Charles Bull of NY and Charles Bull of CT are connected to. The dates match up pretty well. He is one place for a few years, then back to the other, etc. They also disappear at the same time, then my Charles shows up in Summit County, OH in 1840. There are only about 4 discrepencies where CB shows up both places at the same time. Two of them are the 1830 census. CB is shown in Hartford and Austerlitz at the same time. His son Franklin was born in 1812, so I am surmising that he may be the one living in Austerlitz in 1830 and using his father's name in the census. The Mary Louise Todd book says that CB of Hartford married a Fanny Corning who died in 1839. I know that my CB of Austerlitz was married to an Eliza at that time. Also Fanny died in in Buffalo 1839, "shortly after marriage". So I suppose her CB is a younger CB who she married. I have found no hard evidence that Fanny married a CB. I only see a church record of her death and people quoting other people's work, which may be wrong. One problem I have is that the CB in Hartford is a clerk of Court in Hartford for several years, while in Austerlitz he is a doctor. CB has no death record in Hartford or Austerlitz areas.
So I am 50/50 as to him being both places. I have researched him for 25 years, and the CB of Hartford is the ONLY possibility I have found.
I may be reaching too far. He may have been a bigamist. There may be more Charleses that live in the same are right after each other who were the same age.
I would love to find someone who is as aquainted with this line as Mary Louise Todd was to discuss this with.
Ron Bull
I don't have Charles Henry Bull. We have Edward Francis Bull b. 1828 of William Bull and Ann. Married Ann Hutchings 1852 Broughton, Oxfordshire, England. They had at least 8 children before immigrating in 1870 to New York.
No Charles' in the family...sorry...but maybe William and Ann could be a lead? I don't have other children for them yet.
I am just beginning my sortie into the Bull side of my family history. The immediate connections I am working from is my Grandmother, Alice Charlotte Bull, (daughter of William Albert Bull and Alice Jones), who married William James Bassett in Cheltenham in 1900.
Alice had three sisters, Emily, Edith and Lizzie. Both Parents died relatively young. Alice (Mother) died at 31 with kidney disease and the father, William Albert, died at 42 of unknown causes at this stage.
This is basically where I am at this stage so interested to hear from anyone who may be travelling down the same road.
Margaret Brown
New Zealand

Margaret & Sarah Bull.

Margaret married Michael McGuigan. Margaret is the daughter of Thomas (1780-1858) & Barbara Shaffer Bull (1782-1854). Sarah Bull who married Samuel Herrman is the daughter of Jonathan (1801-1879) & Elizabeth Douglas Bull (1811-1890). Jonathan is a son of Thomas & Barbara Shaffer Bull. Thomas & Barbara Shaffer Bull did have a daughter Sarah Bull (b. 1808) who married Thomas Crawford (b. 1805). Barbara Shaffer is the daughter of Christian & Phillipina (Phebe) Behler/Beeler Shaffer from Berks county Pa. Phebe is the daughter of Bernhardt & Elizabeth Behler. I have compiled a 1239 page book on the descendants of Bernhardt & Elizabeth.

Thank you. I just went online and found a copy of that book at www.amazon.com. Just ordered it. When Dad (A. O. Hawkins 1915-1992) saw him it would have been in Southern Oklahoma and Tarlton would have been a very elderly man. Dad would have been a child I suppose. Dad was raised a couple of counties to the West of where Tarlton and Sarah lived.

Dad's grandparents, Josephine [Brown] and Jeff Richey lived on the farm neighboring dad's family, so I expect Tarlton and Sarah were visiting Jeff and Josey when dad met him. Well, he probably looked like he does in that photo you mentioned, as you said he was elderly.

I am trying to remember all of dad's old stories, and I really don't expect some of them to go linger on and on and require a lot more research -- well this story has gotten very interesting because Tarlton was an interesting character with a colorful life. Moreover, much of it was written down and recorded during his lifetime -- that didn't happen with most people.

Still looking for a record of his death. Odd that his name wasn't carved next to Sarah's where she was buried. Still a puzzle.

Again thanks.

Vance Hawkins

You can find a library located near you on the website Familysearch under resources. Maybe you're able to find out more information if you can look the document.

Eastland Co., Tx Robert H Bull being born Nov 1888 -- but it is definitely the same man --

I found a Jefferson Parish and a Jefferson Island -- no town by that name. Jefferson Parrish was south of New Orleans -- deep in Cajun country. I wonder if he worked in the oil industry? It is a place to start -- thanks

Vance

Howdy --

Do you know how to contact any of Tarlton and Sarah's children? I have been tying for years.

So you descend from Lizzie? She is the one that wrote that account of her father's death by Horse Creek in the Cherokee Nation in 1859. Good to meet you.

I suspect he was buried there with Sarah, his second wife. Your cousin also mentioned that the date of his death was not filled in on his tombstone. I think it might be worth it to write the cemetery itself and ask them if they have any records of his death. Maybe old newspapers in Murray County will have something.

You've got me curious, now. I'll look into it as well and see what I can find.
I am a decendent of Tarleton Bull his sister was my 2nd Greatgrandmother Lizzie Bull. I think you already were in contact with my cousin. I am trying to figure out when Tarleton died. There is a tombstone photo on findagrave Buckhorn Cemetery Murray, Oklahoma one side says Sarah A. Bull born Oct 20 1853 died Feb 12, 1925 the other side says Jarelton D. Bull born March 1, 1845 there is no death date. The tombstone must be made of sandstone their name's are scratched on it. My cousin seems to think that he is not buried there since there is no death date on the stone.

It all started with a purchase of a huge area of land in 1852. but the seller hadn*t the right to sell the land. This turned out to be a huge economic burden for Ole. He also felt responsible to help the settlers that came, beliving in his plans. He stayed several years in america 1843-45,1852-57 and from 1867. He visited Norway each summer.

Let me know if you need any more.
The place you visited was Ole Bull State Park near Galeton, PA. A newly formed foundation will soon begin rehabbing the small Ole Bull Museum on Rt 44 in Galeton. For the time being, if you are on FaceBook you can check the Spunky Norwegian Fundation page and be connected to a lot of good information about Ole. Ole Bornemann Bull was born in NOrway in 1810. He began what came to be known as his lost colony of Oleana in 1852 in Potter County, Pennsylvania.

I have managed to trace Mary Keene's family back to 1600.I have not, however, yet gone back any furthrer than Elizabeth Bull and James Papps.
