Bill, my Bumpass ancestral line connects with your line in VA. Anne Bumpass married John 'Fighting Capt'Bumpass. She was the sister of my William Bumpass who resided in Hanover Co VA and served in the Rev War. When my gggf William Bumpass, Jr left home after his father married Elizabeth Harris it is assumed that he went to NC and stayed with his aunt Anne before moving to Davidson Co TN. His mother had died leaving him and 2 brothers. Elizabeth Harris was only a few years older than William, Jr. when she married William, Sr. Must have been some conflict as he did not return to Hanover Co VA.

Regards, Bettye

Betty,

I forgot to include the date of entry in the Deed Book. It is April 1859.

I have stories of James Monroe as a CSA Cavalry Officer as related to me by my Grandfather, Charles Bert Bumpass, son of James A Bumpass, oldest son of James M with Lou Hopper Bumpass.

My 3rd son is "Chattahoochie River" John Bumpass Underwood.

I had already carried the family back to Edouard Bompasse.

If you want to share notes sometime, contact me.

Best Regards, Bill

Bill, I have been assisting a man that is a descendant of James Monroe Bumpass. I am also a Bumpass descendant whose ancestral line connects to this line a few generations back.

Using the LAB compilation and another family tree I can now take the James Monroe Bumpass line back to our immigrant ancestor, Edouard Bompasse (Edward Bumpass). He arrived on 9 Nov 1621 on the ship Fortune which was the next group of pilgrims after the Mayflower.

Regards, Bettye

Betty,

That James Monroe Bumpass was a son of Jesse Bumpass is now provable.

James Monroe Bumpass married his second wife Lucinda Hopper 10 Aug 1853 in Madison, Tennessee.

In Fannin County, Texas records
Deed Book L, page 227,
Jesse Bumpass of Madison County Tennessee to Lucinda Bumpass wife of James M Bumpass of Fannin County, for love and affection to sd. Lucinda Bumpass and the children of my son James M. Bumpass:
Man - George, age 30 years,
Girl - Fanny, Age 11 years.

James Bumpass was indeed a brother of Alfred R (Bert) Bumpass, b. Abt 1822. If you are a descendant of Jesse Bumpass, I'd be pleased to know more about your lineage and pleased to share what information I have.

Bill

He was born in 1760 in Orange Co NC, & died 1840 in Orange Co NC. They had 6 children, Alexander, William, Robert, Winifred Pearl, & Bumpass. Census mentions a James Curtis also living in the home. I have the line from the child Bumpass forward to today.

I haven't found a direct connection, just the 1850 census where PM is living with Augustine's son, presumed to be PM's brother.
I did find some old letters that PM wrote and he mentions his brother, Green. Augustine had a son named Green, so that is another possible connection.
I did also find PM and some other Bumpasses in Lawrence County, TN. I don't know if that is significant, but thought I would mention it.
If you want to email me at tnvalleygenealogy@charter.net, I'll be glad to send you copies of what I found.

Kristi

Mr. Bumpass, and although a young man, has already acquired an enviable reputation as a lawyer, with most brilliant prospects of greater advancement. there is not a more popular young man in the city than Ed Bumpass.
Death of T. J. Bumpass

Appears in the Terrell Times-Star, Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas, 17 March 1893 ...

Mr. T. J. Bumpass, brother of Capt. J. K. Bumpass, died at the asylum last Thursday afternoon, the 9th instant, from the effects of wounds received in the confederate service and his remains were taken to Farmersville his home, Friday morning by his brother for interment. Several weeks ago the deceased while, in a state of mental depression, tried to commit suicide by shooting himself with a shotgun, and account of which appeared in the Times-Star at the time. The wound inflicted was not fatal, but his brother, fearing another attempt at suicide, had him removed to the asylum at this place for treatment, where he had been confined for several weeks prior to his death. He had almost entirely recovered from the self-inflicted wound, but those received in the army, having shattered his jaw and impaired his mastication and digestion, has so weakened his physical strength from long suffering as to render his recovery impossible. Mr. Bumpass was one of the largest and most influential farmers of Collin County, where he had lived ever since the war. He was highly esteemed by his friends and neighbors for his high moral character and general worth as a citizen.

A Question for the Bumpass Experts

Who are the parents of Nancy Bumpass (1824 – 1900)?

Nancy Bumpass was born Feb 10, 1824 in North Carolina, exact location unknown. The first record of Nancy occurs with the marriage bond of Richard Baker bearing the notation of his marriage to Nancy Bumpass in November 1849 at Edgecombe County, NC. She next appears in the 1850 U.S. census for Nash County, NC with her husband, Richard Baker.

Nancy has been identified by other researchers as the daughter of John Bumpas and Martha Etheridge. However, to date we have been unable to find definitive documentation of this relationship.

There is a John Bumpas listed in the 1840 U.S. census for Nash County who is of the age group 70-80. He has one female of the proper age group (10-15) to be Nancy. There are two males (15–20 and a female (40–50) also reported. We are unable to locate him in the 1850 census.

Documentation of the marriage between John Bumpas and Martha Etheridge exists in a number of sources. The will of Caleb Etheridge probated in 1826 identifies a daughter Martha as the wife of John Bumpers. The marriage appears in the Ancestry.com database Edgecombe County Vital Records (1720-1880), and is also recorded in “Ten Generations of The Etheredge – Etheridge – Ethridge Family of America”, Compiled by Fae Alice Etheredge and Ema Lee Etheredge Tipton.

There is a will written Oct 11, 1849 and proven November 1855 in Edgecombe County for John Bumpas. The will identifies daughters Phebre, Mary, Martha, wife Martha, and son John W Bumpas (as executor). This will is consistent with a marriage to Martha Etheridge, but poses a problem with regards to Nancy in that she is not mentioned.

Some researchers report that Martha Etheridge was the second wife of John Bumpas. There are records dated 1800 in Halifax County of a John Bumpas as married to a Sarah Crawley, widow of Aires Jones Crawley. These records pertain to the settlement of the Crawley estate and appear in "Abstracts of Deeds, Halifax County, North Carolina 1802-1807". If this is the same John Bumpas and Sarah was his first wife, she must have died prior to 1826 when John is known to have been married to Martha Etheridge. However, we are left with the possibility of a small window in time where Sarah could have been the mother of Nancy Bumpass.

While the birth of Nancy in 1824 appears consistent with the marriage of John Bumpas & Martha Etheridge in that the marriage occurred prior 1826 (Caleb Etheridge will) and lasted until after 1849 (John Bumpas will), there is no proof of Nancy as their daughter. Indeed, there is a chance that Nancy is the daughter of John Bumpas and Sarah Crawley. All we can say is that the timeline is consistent with either scenario.

To confuse things further, the Marriage & Death Notices from the Wilmington, NC Tri-Weekly Commercial (Thurs 27 Sept 1855) that states John Bumpas died on Sept 17, 1855 in Nash County, at the reported age of 98 years. It was also reported that his wife Nancy died one day later at the age of 90 years. If these are all the same John Bumpas, then there is a third wife Nancy, last name unknown. For all this to be true, Martha Etheridge would have to die after 1849 when John wrote his will in Edgecombe County, and well before 1855 when he is shown as married to Nancy LNU. Again, all we can say is that the timelines appear consistent with the scenario but we are no closer to proving the parentage of Nancy Bumpass.

We have a bit more on Nancy Bumpass herself. She was the mother to six children; Laura (1851 – 1910), Mary Frances (1853 – 1922), John Henry (1855 – 1938), Martha Ann (1857 – 1947), James Carter (1859 – 1931), and Richard Walter (1870 – 1953). The family appears to have always lived in the area of Whitakers, NC and records appear in both Nash and Edgecombe counties. Her husband, Richard Baker died in 1875 at Whitakers, NC. In 1886, Nancy divided up a 25 acre plot giving each of her six children a plot of a little over 4 acres. Nancy died Jan 28, 1900. Nancy, Richard Baker and their children are all buried in the Baker family cemetery on Fisher Road, Whitakers, NC.

So, back to the original problem; who were the parents of Nancy Bumpass? Are they John Bumpas & Sarah Crawley, John Bumpas & Martha Etheridge, some other John Bumpas, or some other Bumpas altogether? Is the John Bumpas identified in our timeline all one person, or have we become confused and merged a number of individuals with the same name (a very real possibility)?

We are searching for documentation and information that proves the parentage of Nancy Bumpass. If her father is indeed John Bumpas, then any additional information on him will also be of considerable assistance.

Thanks, Mike Hallett
mhallett@socal.rr.com
I just emailed the obit you sent to a cousin of my husbands and he emailed me back a picture of J.W.B. Newton to send to you. But i don't think its the one they talked about in the obit because he seems to be younger. His wifes name was Frances Barbara Boxley that is probably where the Fannie came from. I didn't know anything about them living in Richmond. I thought they lived in Hanover in a house near Negrofoot. He ran a store there for a while. In some old court records at the Library of Virginia I found several reference to law suits against him from several venders that had not been paid.
Pat

Hi Pat,

I would very much like like to see a photo of JWB Newton - I have his wife as a Fannie Boxley born abt 1852 - perhaps Barbara was her given name and Fannie a nickname. My g-grandmother was Pauline Estelle Newton (1885-1959) and my grandfather was Conrad Lee Winston (1924-2005) her son. I am pasting below the obit. I found for JWB Newton apparently he was quite a character - As it says his father was William Newton of Caroline County - I wish i could have seen the picture they mention! -- Andy

From: Richmond Dispatch Wednesday, December 3, 1902
"OLD NEWTON" DEAD
WELL-KNOWN NEWSPAPER CARRIER DIES OF PARALYSIS.
WAS A MODEL FOR ARTISTS.
A Familiar Figure of Richmond's Streets for Many Years-
Served Throught the War and Had an Interesting History.
In the death of Mr. J. W. B. Newton, affectionately known among his intimates as "Old Newton," is lost to the city one of its most picturesque as well as interesting characters. Mr. Newton sold papers at the corner of Seventh and Broad streets and there was probably no man in Richmond who had a larger number of
acquaintances.
Many years ago he suddenly appeared in Richmond and took his stand on that corner and: since that time rain or shine, he could be found in his place. He had gradually built up an enormous patronage and it was said that he was one of the largest paper dealers in Richmond. Few people knew his name or where he lived, but constantly seeing him there they got in the habit of picking up a paper and dropping a nickel.
Early in the morning and late in the evening the old man, bowed, under the weight of years, could be seen pushing his go-cart filled with papers along Franklin street to and from his stand. Residents along that thoroughfare looked upon him as their especial property and summer evenings when the wealth and beauty of Richmond were out on their stoops and galleries the old man's passing was noted all along the way. None ever knew where he lived; he came and went asking nothing of any man save tne
purchase of his papers.
He was a patriarch indeed in appearance, the type of man who, notwithstanding his apparent poverty, commanded the respect of all. His ruggedness appealed to several artists and after much persuasion Homier & Clark gained his consent to allow them to photograph him. Just as he was they carried him to their studio and photographed him. The picture may be seen in the firm's cases and is pronounced one of the most perfect pieces of photographic art ever produced.
"Old Newton" was a man with a history. Fate was not always kind to him and he received many hard licks in. his journey through life.
He was born in Caroline county sixty-four years ago. He was the son of Mr. William Newton. He served throughout the war in Company B of the Fifteenth Virginia Regiment. After the war he settled in Caroline county and married a young widow, who prior to her first marriage, was Miss Boxley, of Louisa.
For several days past his customers and even people who did not buy papers, but were accustomed to seeing the o!d man have missed him from his stand. Something was lacking on the corner and people felt the void. The old man was not there and none knew the reason.
Last Thursday he was suddenly stricken with paralysis and though every attention was given him by his family it was felt from the first that he could not live. The end came Monday night a little before 8 o'clock.
He is survived by his wife and five children. Messrs. Willie and Walter Newton, and Misses Olivia, Estelle, and Lottie Newton.
The funeral will take place from the home, No. 1519 west Gary street, at 3 o'clock this afternoon. The interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
J.W.B. Newton was my husbands g.grandfather. His grandmother was his daughter Lottie Newston Stubbs. I would be interested in anything you have on them. I don't know for sure who the father of J.W.B. Newton was? It could be John or William Newton. We have a family picture of J.W.B. Newton and Barbara Boxley Newton and their children. Melvina
Newton I have nothing on.

Pat

Hi!

My G-G-grandfather was John William Bumpass Newton (1839-1902). I would be happy to fill you in on J.W.B. Newton's family - he had a great Obit in the Richmond Disptach on December 3, 1902.

Hi,

Lucy's parents were John "Deep Creek" Bumpass and Ann Tapp. There is quite a bit of information on John and his line. If you go to the Rootsweb WorldConnect website you will find mine as well as others info on him when you do a search. Hope this helps.

Lucy Bumpass of Person County NC

I am researching one of my family lines and I believe it leads me to Robert Jones and Lucy Bumpass, married 21 Dec 1824 in Person County, NC. Any chance that any of the more experienced Bumpass researchers know who Lucy is and who her parents might be? I would appreciate any help on this portion of the family line.

Thanks in advance.
