Thankful Bumpas applied for revolutionary war pension as widow of Jacob Morse, SR. He was a fife player during the war. You can view the pension file at Fold3.com. You can do a free trail and view it for free. I believe this jacob morse was also married to Mary Dyer and they were from Gorham, and Jacob was born in newbury MA.

I just found your answer to my daughter Christina's posting. Tabitha Bumpus is my GGGrandmother. We are very interested in your data. I hope you get this response. We didnt get notified of yours. I fell upon it while reviewing info on my Grandmother Alpha Jae Bowers. I've never connected with a direct male descendant of Edouard Bompasse. We are thrilled! Have you ever done a Genealogy DNA test? Looking forward to your response (hope it's not another 12 years :) I may not be on earth then)! Sincerely, Linda Jae.

Another researcher connected with me:
Dear Patricia,

I am writing regarding a mutual family member Elizabeth Bumpus. She also went by Eliza and Etta. I was wondering if you know anything about her? She is my second great aunt, daughter of Bradley Bumpus and Elmira Congdon. I have a newspaper clipping from the Pulaski Democrat stating that Eliza Snell Loomis died in Lancaster, Iowa, June 1938 and that she was aunt to several of my known relatives. When I sent for her death certificate everything was verified excpet the names of her parents. They were listed as Rodney Brown and Eliza Melissa Russell. So now I am totally confused. You are the only other person who has any information on this line. DO you know anything about Clark Loomis wife, Eliza?

Thanks for you help,
Patty
In research her query I also found Mary and Anna listed. I am assuming her name was Mary Anna, but making assumptions.

Matilda Graves / Grover Bumpus - Parents Disappeared

I'm looking for any information on Matilda Grover or Graves. I found this on another site: "Matilda Grover, b. Dec. 3, 1808, Vt. She was of Scottish parentage. Her parents started for town and disappeared leaving 8 children. Matilda was 8 years old at the time." She married Simeon Gladius Bumpus in New York and they moved to Ohio. I am hoping to find out who her parents were, what happened to them, and who her siblings were. Matilda and Simeon are in my grandparent line. One reference show her as Grover, the rest as Graves.

The Lynn Albert Bumpus data page 383 shows Richard E. Bumpass 8.1245 to be a son of George Washington Bumpass. Richard E. was a son of Robert H. Bumpass and his wife, Martha Wade. This is a different line of Bumpass than the North Carolina (Edward) line. Robert H. Bumpass and Martha Wade had 11 children in Wilson County Tennessee. After she died in 1836, Robert H. married Eliza T. Craddock and had 1 more child. Robert H. died in 1837 before the last child, Henrietta was born. The children were then put with Wade families as guardians in Rutherford County Tennessee. After Richard E. became of age, he moved to Gibson County Tenn. and was an attorney. He married Elizah (Lyde) Mitchum in 1870 at Caroll County Tenn. He served in the Civil War and later moved to Dallas Texas where he practiced law. Two of his brothers, Levi M. and John W. Bumpass were already farming and ranching in Dallas County. Richard E's son, Clarence C. Bumpass 9.1168(page 508)was a court reporter in Dallas and was transferred to Beaumont Texas during the Spindletop Oil Boom arount 1903. Richard E., wife Lyde, son Clarence C. and daughter Leona M.(Mickie)9.1169 all moved to Beaumont. Lyde died there in 1904 and Richard E. in 1906. Clarence C. moved back to Dallas then to Ft. Worth where he later died. Leona M.(Mickie) married Charles Nelson Jr. in 1908 in Beaumont. They then moved to Tulsa Oklahoma where Charles became an oil executive. Leona M. died in 1955. If you need further information, please let me know.

Seeking info of "Mr. Bumpus" who travelled to Fullerton Harbour (Cape Fullerton) in Hudson Bay, Canada in 1912 on the whaling ship "A. T. Gifford" with George Cleveland and Capt. James Wing, to open a fur trading post for employer F. N. Monjo of Stamford, CT.

Who was Mr. Bumpus? Was he from the New Bedford or Stamford area? Was he a former whaler?

What became of him? Did he perish in the 1915 disaster of the A. T. Gifford? Or did he enter the employ of the Hudson's Bay Company?

Thanks for any help!

C

Robert Marion BUMPUS, b. 1843 Kentucky ( son of William S, son of Evan)

I have been tracing the following 2 BUMPUS men who married Lucinda and Louisa PAGE, both Daughters of William PAGE and Lavisa/Lovisa ENSLEY/HENSLEY(?) -

BUMPUS, NATHAN PAYE (PAGE), LUCINDA 04/02/1868 003/ 00000058 JEFFERSON

BUMPUS, ROBERT M PAGE, LOUISA E 06/18/1863 002/0018 00000000 JEFFERSON

The above Nathan appears to have been a son of Nathan BUMPUS, b. bet 1813 and 1818 in Virginia. Nathan and his descendants will be the subject of another posting.

Robert Marion BUMPUS was a son of William S BUMPUS, b. abt 1809 in Virginia.
William S(Samuel?) BUMPUS (Sr.) was a son of Evan Bumpus, a native of Virginia. William S(Samuel?) BUMPUS (Sr.) married Charlotte Buckner, a native of Virginia. William S (Sr.) and Charlott were the parents of six children (this according to the Biography of their son William S BUMPUS, Jr.). I have not found an Evan BUMPUS in Virginia in the 1810 or 1820 Census (though a search does turn up a George BUMPASS, two Nathan BUMPASSes, a Samuel BUMPASS, and a William BUMPASS in Virginia in the 1810 Census).

(I suspect that William Sr, and the elder Nathan were brothers, or at least cousins, but have no information further than the continued association of their descendants over time.)

As this is a "work in progress", I have not traced back the BUMPUS families to try and find a common link.

However, the published biography for William S BUMPUS, Jr., from a period history of Jefferson County lists the father of William BUMPUS (Sr.) as Evan BUMPUS of Virginia.

See also my posting for Nathan BUMPUS in the Census, where I have speculated as to the possible connection.

If you have comments, corrections, or additions, please send them. If you want the William S BUMPUS (Sr.) or Robert Marion BUMPUS family groups, or the transcriptions of the 1850 thru 1930 Census enumerations for Robert M BUMPUS and family, please ask.

Kim CHAPMAN

Nathan W BUMPUS, b. 1849 Kentucky (son of Nathan W, son of George)

The above Nathan appears to have been a son of Nathan BUMPUS (Sr.), b. bet 1813 and 1818 in Virginia. This is based on finding the younger Nathan in the Census enumeration of this family in 1850 (see below). Nathan (Sr.)

There are on-line files at Ancestry and RootsWeb (some are one-and-the-same) some of which show that the elder Nathan, born abt 1813 (+/-, the Census entries have him born between 1812 and 1818), who came to Illinois before 1860, was a son of George BUMP/BUMPASS. This George BUMP/BUMPASS is listed as having sons William, Nathan, and Evans George. In a search of the 1810 Census, I do not find a George BUMP in Virginia, but I do find a George BUMPASS, two Nathan BUMPASSes, a Samuel BUMPASS, and a William BUMPASS.

Robert Marion BUMPUS was a son of William S BUMPUS, b. abt 1809 in Virginia.

I suspect that William Sr, and the elder Nathan were brothers, or at least cousins, but have no actual basis further than the continued association of their descendants over time.

Now, if George BUMP/BUMPASS, who is listed as the father of the elder Nathan, is the same individual as George BUMPASS of the 1810 Census of Virginia, AND if the George BUMP/BUMPASS was actually Evans George BUMPASS (the BUMPASS families seem to follow the naming of a son for the father in several generations, and this George BUMP/BUMPASS had a son named Evans George BUMPASS), THEN it is just possible that the William BUMPUS listed as a son of George was the same person as the William S BUMPUS who came to Jefferson Co., Illinois before 1860 (as a bio. published in a history of Jeff. Co. lists the father of this William S BUMPUS as Evan BUMPUS). This would make Nathan BUMPUS (Jr.) and Robert M BUMPUS 1st cousins.

See also my posting for Robert Marion BUMPUS.

If anyone can help with any of this, please offer corrections, additions, or thoughts. If you want the family groups, or the transcriptions of the Census enumerations brom 1850 thru 1930, please ask.
Her parents were William Bumpus and Sarah Burgess. Don't know if there's a connection with your Jenny (though my grandmother had a sister named Jennie, b. 1893.)

Debra

I descend from Reuben's older 1/2 brother Samuel Bumpus, b. 1840. I have recently found that Reuben James or James Reuben was born in abt 1857 to Reuben Bumpus b. NY abt 1800 and Pricilla Colby b. OH. abt 1830. They were married in Richland CO., OH. in 1853. I beleive she was his third wife. Reuben Sr. was married to Jane Wells in Richland Co., In 1835. The family moved to Blountsville, Henry Co., IN. in about 1856 and Reuben was born there. The entire family entered the Poor Farm on 27 Sept. 1867. Reuben was released on 10 Dec. 1867. I beleive Samuel took him to Missouri with him as Samuel arrived in Carthage MO. in early 1868. Recently, Don Bumpus of Alaska, a descendent of Reuben, told me Reuben went to MO. from IN. or IL. with a brother.
This family interests me as well. My grandfather George James Bumpus lived with "uncle James Bumpus" after his father, Samuel Bumpus, died in Carthage MO in 1885. George James was 15 years old at the time. "Uncle James" is said to have owned a tavern and grandfather said he was 1/2 brother to Samuel. My interest is to find the ancestry of Samuel and James. I know from the 1870 and 1880 census that Samuel was born in OH., his father in NY. and mother in CT. I know a family in AK that descends from the Holt CO. MO. James Rubin or Reubin James. I also have found a Reubin Bumpus in OH. and, as I remember, some information on his ancestry.
Can you give me some dates to work with? I will look for what I have on this family. My stack of possibilities has become mountainous.

Re: Bumpus (Oxfordshire & London)

Hi again Michelle - two messages from me in one day!

I am descended from Mary KING's brother Thomas (b 1821).

Two points -
1. I think you find that her name was not Mary Pearl King, but just Mary King (b 1818). Mary Pearl is Mary Pearl BURROWS (b c 1843) who was the second (of 3) wife of Thomas King BUMPUS (b 1840) Thomas & Mary's son.

Secondly, I think Arthur Cecil BUMPUS (b 1872) may have married twice - there are two records for him on FreeBMD. One is as you say, to Harriet Maude Effie MORRIS in 1909, the other was in 1899 which is quite plausible given his age then. Have you investigated that? It might meant here are children other than Geoffrey.

Do you have any further information about the RICHARDSON connection?

Cheers,
jo
in Auckland, New Zealand

Bumpus (Oxfordshire & London)

I am tracing the Bumpus family of Stonesfield, Longcombe and Witney in Oxfordshire who moved to London. I already have quite a lot of information but am after details of missing branches.

John Bumpus (b1814 Combe, Oxon) married Mary Pearl King (b1819) and had 5 children: Thomas King Bumpus (b1839), John Bumpus (b1841), Jane King Bumpus (b1845), James (b1849) and William Henry (b1847).

I am a descendent of Thomas King Bumpus through his son, Arthur Cecil Bumpus who married Harriet Maude Effie Morris.

I know James Bumpus (b1849) lived in Woodford, Essex and married Edith Alma Brown (b1855) and had the following children: Harold Ar thur(b1885), Ellen Mary (b1878), Frederick James (b1879) Donald (b1889) and Stanley George (b1881). Donald married Laura Mary Quaife and had a son, John Donald Stanley who married Janet Ratnet and had Vivien.

William H Bumpus (b1847) married Elizabeth Anne Robson and had the following children: Alfred William (b1874), Miriam Grace (b1878), Ella Maude (b1881), Dora Mildred, Edith Gertrude, Francis Henry and Leslie Ryder (b1884). They all lived in Beckenham in 1901. Francis Henry married Mabel Adams who had the following children: William Henry Cecil, Phyllis, Anthony and Robert John.

I am interested in finding out further details on this family.
