I'm looking for information about the Bura family, my great grandfather Piotr Bura immigrated to Canada in 1935 from Poland with Auklina Semeniuk and their 6 children including Olga, Micholaig (Nick) Eugenia (Jean), Nadzia (Nancy), and Verna was born in Canada. They also brought over Emelion and Lukia (lucy) Bura. They left behind Taras Karpuk and Pauline Bura along with Walter Karpuk who married Anna, also Verka Karpuk, Fidoshia Karpuk and others.

My family name was originally Bure, changed to Bura in the US. Father, Vytautas aka Witold, came from Latezheris, Lithuania, though it has also been noted as being in Poland. Family members lived in Lithuania, Poland, and Belarus, all originally Lithuanian. His parents & grandparents visited the family branch in Belarus in the 1920's I think. I knew there was a branch of the family that settled in Brockton, Mass, we visited there when I was a small child in the early 50's. My parents settled in Philadelphia because father's uncle Joseph was already living there.

I don't know about Polish (father spoke it and Lithuanian, but I spoke Lithuanian) Bure is the masculine surname, Buriene would be the wife, in Lithuanian.

My grandfather Harry Bura came to the US prior to WWII. Most of my family from Romania, Budapest I believe lived in a town of La Posh (spelling) I know the Bura house was taken over durring the war and is being currently used by the forestry department. After the war Harry assisted who ever was left from the area come to the US and even put them up in buildings in NYC. He had many brothers and sisters and most killed in concentration camps. His two brothers Jack & Nat were liberated from Aushwitz and came to the US with their sister Bertha. If any of this is familiar my email is rbura@optonline.net

Wow! this is the most promising contact we've had so far! Maybe we are related (although I'm only a Bura through marriage).
Was your Harry ever known by any other names? It seems a lot of our side of the family changed their names when they moved to the UK. Moise became Morris, Jacob became Jack, etc...

If you've got any more info about your Buras I'd love to know, and I'll see if I can find anything else.

Thanks, Leigh

Hi Bev, sorry for my delay in replying, but I only just found these messages.
You've got the right family, but the wrong person. I think you're looking for Leah, Carol's daughter. I'm Leigh, Kevin's daughter in law (I'm only a Bura by association). Confusing I know!
I'd love to hear any info you have on the Bura brothers, as our knowledge is quite limited. I've managed to find out maurice (or Moisse) married a Lucy Ellen Blinkhorn in Manchester, but so far that's about it. Still trying to find anything out about the brother.

We think his father was called Lebu Bura, or maybe Lebu was shortened from Leibervici or Leibervich or Leibervichi

Moise Bura and his brother were put on a boat to flee Romania in 1903.

Moise came to the UK, and the other brother went to the USA.
Hello Catherine,

Talk to Your Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Parents, for Family Information. Other Sources' Family Bibles. All Churches have Baptizmal, Marriage, and Death Records, Cemteries have Headstone Information, Ellis Island for immigration, Roots Web, Your local Library has a Membership to Ancestry Com., Type in Your Surnames, and go into 1910,1920,1930, Michigan, Wayne and Macomb Counties Population Census.

Social Security Death Index is another area to locate Relatives, PGSA, Michigan PGSA too.

These Families are huge, most of the Time.

We need Dates and Places of Births, Marriages, Divorces, and Deaths, of All Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Parents, Brothers, Sisters, All Children and All Spouses Family Genealogy. Even All Great and Great Great, Great Great Great Relatives.

I know in My Family there are several Franks, Johns, Josephs, Stanleys, Wojciechs, few Charles, Marys, Anna's, Kathyrns, Georges, Some Stephens, Charlies, Walters, Elizabeth's, Veronica's, Victoria's, Dysaw, Bogan, Bruno, Jozefa, Hedwiga, Stefanie, Vincent, William, Maria, Caroline, Richard, and many more names.

There were many Widow's, and Widower's, so there are many half brothers and sisters in families.

You said Detroit, There are Bury's also in Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, and Westland, East Pointe, and many other Area's too.

My Bury, was also Spelled Bura too.

It is also a problem with the Women because of becoming a Widow or even being Divorced, Names and Children then change also too. This is a big problem for me; in trying to make family connections.

Renard Chrobak
rfchrobak@alltel.net

Renard:

Re the marriage, as far as we know it was her first and only marriage. She was 22 when she was married in Detroit; suppose it is possible she was married before (we've no record of this though)

We are not positive (yet) where Mary came from; death certificate says Austria. However, we do know she was baptized in Czudec. Parents were Victoria Mac and Joseph Bury.

Victoria's parents seem to be Matthew Bury and S~ Wilk (maiden)
Joseph's parents seem to be Frank Bury and Frances Czarnil or Czarnik (maiden)
Just caught your posting...though I see it is old. I've been looking into some family history, and have a ggm Mary Anna Bury (died in detroit, Oct 7, 1956). Married to Vincent Stanley Szymanski. Childern are Venanty, Klements, Alphose, George, Theodore, Stanley, Cecilia (my gm), and Virginia.

Same family?

Do you know where any of the Canadian-born Bury children might have migrated to? If any in the Chicago area, or to Indiana or Arkansas, please reply.
Thanks,
Carol Sellers Zajicek

Sorry, I'm having difficulty gleaning anything in the way of information or suggestions from your reply. My Joseph Magnus Bury ancestor DID choose to migrate to Illinois, Indiana and Arkansas, and his son, Otto did settle in Oklahoma. I cannot offer you their reasons, and am sorry you don't have positive feelings about their decision to do so. All I can tell you is that they had a positive effect on the communities they settled in.

Carol Sellers Zajicek

In Mt. Olivet Cemetary, located at 6 mile and Van Dyke. There are two Bura's laid to rest there. 1) Michael 1879-1947 and 2) Julia 1879-1944. I am related to these to people. I know that Julia is Michael's 2nd wife. That he had two children from his 1st wife, and 1 from his 2nd wife. Looking for more information on these people. also Michael came from the "old" country which is where is 1st wife passed away. They were in Canada for a time then came to Detroit.

I was always under the impression that she came from Poland but the papers show that she was born in Austria.

For whatever it's worth, there was an Anna bura in the 1930 Census for Detroit, age 47 from Krakow Poland, with an adopted daughter by the name of Stella Woloszyn and they had a person rooming with them by the name of Felix Szymanski.

No relation to me, but was trying to help a friend find her Bury/Bura family from Poland in Detroit when I came across the info. Thought it might give you an avenue to pursue.
Sue O'Meara
Michigan

I have no relatives left to talk to. My mom is the last surviving in her family. Her mom was Mary Bury and she married a Vincent Szymanski and lived her life out in Detroit. Mom is 84 years old and dying , and her memory is very bad. I do know that grandma had a brother Frank, but her family was so incredibly secretive that I have no other info on her. My cousin has her immigration papers and is sending them to me. I know that she was Austrian born but is Polish, and that's about all that I know.

Why would any Candian-born Bury Children Migrate to Chicago Area or Indiana, Specially Arkansas, a poor State with the Right to Work Law, Open Shops, Very low Wages, Poverty State. Between 14 and 16 in State With Overhaul Poor Educational Systems. My impression Arkansas is a Slave State, and Now Many Industries are Moving to Mexico, Cheaper Wages, Overhead, Utilities, Taxes, Shipping Etc.

Look in Areas of New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Pa., Ma.Ohio, Wi., Mn.
