Burcham-Doty (Jasper County, Illinois)

My name is Kim Wright and I hoping I will be able to get more information to help me. Joseph Anthony Burcham raised my 2nd great grandmother, Florence Doty, after her dad (Preston Doty) passed in 1854 and her mother (Isabelle Dodd) passing in 1858.

I am searching for the parents of my 3rd great grandmother Isabella Dodd. She was born about 1834 and died 1858 in childbirth in Jasper County, Illinois. She married Preston Doty (my 3rd great grandfather) on April 13, 1854 in Jasper County, Illinois. Preston died September 28, 1854 in Jasper County, Illinois. She gave birth to my Great Great Grandmother F. May Florence Doty (Florence) on Jan 29, 1855 in Illinois. She Married Joseph Anthony Burcham on June 26, 1856 in Jasper County, Illinois. Does anyone have any leads? I would be happy to share my lineage with whomever is interested.

We now know that Margaret is probably the daughter of Aaron and Lydia McCarty or McCarter. We need to find Margaret somewhere in Surry, North Carolina or Maybe Tennessee.
At some point Reuben took the family to Tennesse. We Know that William McCarty married Mary Elizabeth Owens from Tennesse. Then they went back to Surry, North Carolina and then ended up in Hendricks, Indiana.
Does anyone know where in Tennesse Reuben and family went.
We are still looking for the parents of Mary Elizabeth Owens
Where is Margaret buried?

Jewell,
Sarah McCarter who married Tyre Gillispie on 5 Aug 1812, apparently died before 1816 when he married again, on 16 Mar, 1816, to Polly Riggs.
Hannah McCarter who married Shadrack McKinney in 1805, apparently died before 1839 but after having two sons, James & Aaron. There is a 1841 deed in Lee Co., in which 'heirs' sold land following Shadrack's death. These were named in the deed as: Jane S. McKinney, James McKinney and Aaron McKinney. James had a power of attorney from Aaron that was given in Surry Co., NC. A few years later Jane S. McKinney widow of Shadrack McKinney , sold land in Lee County.
I have no information about the death date of Susannah McCarter who married Charles Chrissman.
Byron

Byron,

We are related - cousins. Ruben Burcham was one of the sons of John (Henry) Burcham B. 1737. Frederick, VA and died 1813, Surry, NC. Ruben's mother was Roseanne Swearingen.

WE also have Burcham's in direct line that were let go by the Quakers. I do not know who but family history has it that it had to do with something about somebody dealing with slaves.

Maybe you can get more info by checking around Surry, NC. It seems that the Burcham's lived there a LONG time so Ruben may have some type of marriage record there. Good luck!

Hello,
In his will written in Stokes County, NC in 1820, Aaron McCarty made token bequests of 1$ to four men, three of whom are identified as sons-in-law by marriage records. The fourth man was Reuben Burcham, who was dismissed from the Westfield MM for marriage out of union in 1803. I think that it is highly likely that Reuben Burcham was also Aaron McCarty's son-in-law, and that Margaret was the daughter of Aaron & his wife Lydia Musgrove who were married in Lancaster County, PA in 1770. However, I have beeen unable to find an1803 marriage record for Reuben Burcham.
The other three recipients of token bequests from Aaron McCarty were Charles Chrissman, Tyre Gillispie, and Shadrack McKinney. The latter is one of my maternal ggg-grandfathers.
Byron Bowman

I was wondering if anyone knew anything about James G. Stallcup, born 30 Sep 1827, married Nancy (b. 29 Aug 1848)Burcham on 26 Jan 1871. The following children (I guess) are also listed: Wesley D. Burcham (b. 17 Feb 1869), Ira Burcham (b. 26 Feb 1872), and Howard Edwin Stallcup (b. 25 Jan 1874). I found their names on a handwritten note in my grandmother's belongings. It was written on a sheet with information relating to her family (Cullison, Scott, Ginger). I am having trouble figuring out the connection. Any information would be great. Thanks!

Reubens Daughter Mary b 17 Jan 1804 Surry, North Carolina, She married Aaron Thurman B 10 Mar 1781 Virginia M 29 Nov 1836 in Indiana. Hendricks, Indiana.
This information was found on her tombstone that she was the daughter of Reuben and Margaret.
Maybe Margaret name is McCarty or Franklin since these are the names of their sons.
When their son William McCarty and wife Mary Elizabeth Owens left North Carolina Reuben went with them I believe. He died in Hendricks, Indiana. Had Margaret already died? His second wife Ruth Davis he must of meant in Hendricks, Indiana because that is where they were married.
So I guess we need to look for Margaret in Surry, North carolina.
Anyone with information would be appreciated.
I am researching Sanford Burcham (Burchum, Burtcham) b. 1947 in KY. He fought on the Union side in the 35th KY Infantry during the Civil War and was wounded during the fighting. In the 1880 census he is listed in Hebbardsville, Henderson, KY with his wife Sarah Catherine (Coale?)and three daughters Ida, Grace and Florence. He died soon after because Sarah was remarried and living with her children in Wabash Co. Illinois, new last name McCabe. I would appreciate any info you can provide.

Amos was my great grandfather! This is great to finally find information on this. . . and your info matches the info that I had so far... That Amos was born after both men were gone! My grandfather is Paul Borden ( he wasn't even sure if Louiza was his grandmother, he said he wasn't around his grandparents much), don't know if you know or have heard of him. The talk in my family is that the "other man" was a Gwinn ( or some variation of that spelling). It's always been a big confusion in the family because the dates in the family bible didn't match up ( Sr. Borden's death and Amos's birth.) but it was kept hush-hush! I do know that one of Amos's brother openly told his children he was not a Borden ( even though he used the last name also.) I have also heard talk about the Indian bloodline in the family, Choctaw, I believe. If you don't mind, I would like to pass on your number to my grandmother, who I am also doing the research for. She has more personal information and would be delighted to speak to family.

(Forgive me if any of my information is incorrect, as I have mentioned it has all been word of mouth. We have very few documented facts!)

Phillip Marlin Miller was the only child Louiza had with the Mr. Miller. She did have a son, Amos, born after the Mr. Borden had passed away and he has alway gone by the Borden name. Louiza insisted he was Mr. Borden's son even though Mr. Borden had been died for over a year. My Granny said it was well known that a neighbor was slipping in Louiza bedroom window late at night. What is your Grandfather name? I have some Burcham history notes that are given out when the Bordens have their reunion but it has a lot of error and I don't have any idea who typed it up so I can have them make correction. You can go in to Roots and look up Shelby Ross Engle and Essie Mae Burcham Engle that my cousin Vicki Williams has there and get a lot of the old Burcham history. She only has our Robert Jefferson Burcham's line of the new generations - not any of his brothers or sisters. There is a lot of talk about what part Indian they were. All I have seen suggest is that Louiza's Grandmother Burcham (Nancy Searcy Burcham) was part Indian. And Louiza's mother, Mary Ann Childers Burcham's mother (Mary Bonds Childers Rhoades) was also part Indian. My cell number is 256-810-7466. Give me a call and we will see what kin we are.
Thank you for your help, Marsha! Louisey would have been my G-G- grandmother, I have had trouble finding any info on her children to document. My grandfather has few memories of his grandmother, and there is debate over if William Borden was his actual grandfather as my G-grandfather went by Miller when he was young and later had his named changed to Borden. All we know about Louisey is that she was married to both a Miller and Borden. If you know any Borden's that might have an idea please feel free to pass this post on. I am very interested in learning about the Burcham's and Borden's.

Looking for Information - James Burcham

I am looking for family information on James Burcham born around 1803 maybe in Canada. James married Margaret who was born 1824 in maybe Scotland. I do not have a last name for her. they had a son Joseph who married Sara Preston. He also had a granddaughter Emily Rose Burcham.
