When the UK sensus were made a large amount of those in the sensus could not read or write. Therefore the person writing those details wrote what sounded like the name , hence. Berford. Berefoud. Barford. etc etc. from a Gloucestershire Burford.

My great grandparents was Shelby Hudson Burford & Ida Louise Noffsinger.

I show that Moses "Mosie" Burford Married Nora Elizabeth Walker, 28 AUG 1904. I have a copy of his death and marriage records. I not positive but he may have been Moses McCormick and then adopted by John.
Spelling of Burford to Burfurd

I am researching the origins of the spelling of the surname Burfurd (from Burford). In particular, when the spelling might have changed and the potential reason. I am also interested to see if the spelling is used anywhere outside of Australia. It was suggested to me by my late grandmother that the spelling change might have links to France??? Not sure exactly the link, but this might trigger someones memory. If anyone has any information, I can be contacted at jon@hotellincoln.com.au
Best regards, Jonathan Burfurd

Hey I have been working on our family line the past few days. I have hit a brick wall at Louie Burford born about 1873 in alabama. He appeared on the 1910 census as being married to pearl burford and a son albert burford (our great grand father) but in 1920 pearl, or p.m., lists herself as a widower. Can anyone help with this?

Re: Any Burfords out there!!

There are so many Buffords/Burfords out there. There are quite a few William Burford/Bufford. I am stuck on William Bufford/Burford, who is down as Burford in the TN census. I'm seriously wondering if maybe his name wasn't "George William Burford, instead of just William Burford. Many of my family members have dropped their first name and go by their middle names. He was born around 1774/5 in England, and died in 1844 in Dover, TN. His first wife was Patsy Thornton; his second wife was Lucy Blanton. I, as well as my cousin, Jerome Davidson, have searched earnestly for this ancester. It seems between the Rebellion of 1798, and court house fires in TN, much history is lost. If you have any further information, I would appreciate an email at bgm10454@gmail.com. Thank you.

William Henry's mother was Elizabeth Govier to whom I am related. I am trying to trace her descendants including those of William Henry Burford, who appears to have married Emily Sabina Jones. However, in the 1901 Census his wife is named as Lydia!

Any info or hints, however slight, will be much apprecaited.

Elizabeth Burford is my gg grandmother. She was born about 1840 in Llangfihangel Esceifiog. She married John Thomas and had amongst other children a son Griffith Burford Thomas. I got all this from census 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901. The problem is that I cannot find any other Burfords on Anglesey. Is there anyone who recognises Elizabeth and could tell me where to start to find the rest of the Burford family. Thank you

Ann Thomas

Re: Any Burfords out there!!

I am a Burford. We are quite a large family. The trouble is finding the right line of Burfords. It's easy to get on the wrong family tree. You are welcome to view my Burford family tree; however, I have named it the Bufford Family Tree. One of the ancestors started spelling the surname as Bufford. I have been trying to chase the Burford family down through England as far as possible. So far, it seems I have made it past William Bufford who migrated from England, and I am stuck on William Burford who was born in 1615 in Burford, Oxfordshire, England and died October 3, 1656 in Charles City, Charles, VA, USA. His wife's name was Ann Burfoot(e) who was born abt. 1619.

Re: Thomas Burford (1750-1838) Richmond City or Richmond County, VA?

Well, I misread the internet site. Richmond County was organized in 1692 (not 1792). So, he could be from either. Anyone got any ideas as to which?
Thanks.
Mark. cmburford@windstream.net

Richmond (city), VA current location - settled 1737.
Richmond County, VA organized in 1792.
Not that it really matters but which one is Thomas from? Since he was born in 1750, I am thinking Richmond City. Any body think differen?
I'm just trying to get everything straight in my genealogy program.
Thanks.
Mark. cmburford@windstream.net
