I am looking for information about my ggg grandmother Paulina Burgess. It states that her father was an Albert Burgess and her mother is Mary Dowell. I have noticed that Albert and Paulina's names are listed in various spellings. Which one is correct? Does anyone have any information about them? One of my relatives said that Paulina had mexican or spanish heritage. Is this true? I've seen that they were from Kentucky. I'd love to talk to anyone who has information on the Burgess family, or photos. Please e-mail me at jsteffanson@g-mail.com. Sherrel61 is my step-mom, so please do not email her.
Eliesha Steffanson

NEW ZEALAND-born BURGESS: Thomas Alfred Burgess OR William Henry Burgess, marrying about 1890

Are you related to Thomas Alfred Burgess, b Napier NZ 1862? OR perhaps William Henry Burgess, b NZ 1858? One brother moved from NZ to Australia as a young man. The other, Thomas probably, went “back” to Ireland, married, and died childless, possibly as late as the 1930s. These are common names and I can’t find either of them.

If you have a childless Uncle / Great-Uncle by marriage in your tree who might be my missing man, can you tell me please? Yes, I’m looking at places like the 1911 Irish Census to see if one brother pops into view. Any other ideas gratefully accepted. The famine orphans flowed out like a tsunami, and parts of the wave flowed back. It would be great to know just where they rested.

Their mother was Winifred Mary Minnie nee Callaghan, an Irish Famine Orphan b 1836 in or near Dublin, sent to Australia on the Earl Grey scheme. She married (1) 1852 in Sydney Australia to Cornishman Master Mariner Richard Plummer Burgess, and (after his death by shipwreck) (2) 1868 in New Zealand to Sydney Leigh Dyer. They moved to Australia with daughter Elizabeth Burgess about 1875; her family I’ve traced. The oldest brother, Richard Henry Burgess, remained in NZ and is my ancestor. Win died in Sydney in 1890. I’m hoping to share information on relatives, Winifred etc, of this misplaced lad with any interested extended family.

Migs (Margaret) Eder, NZ

I have an original State of Iowa marriage certificate dated 3 Oct 1875 between TT Burgis or maybe TJ Burgis of Cerro Gordo, Colorado, and Mary Jane Tupper, as well as a Grand Army of the Republic certificate appointing T. Burgess an Aide de Camp, dated 1 July 1909 at Des Moines. I also have photos that appear to be related. This is not my family -- just some stuff discovered at an empty home -- if it's your family and you'd like me to mail this stuff to you, just let me know. I hate to toss it; it was obviously valuable once to someone who kept it this long.

Anna,

Hello. I am related to this Sylvester J. Burgess, 10 Dec 1900 - March 1982, via his uncle Casimir Sylvester Brožis. I just happened to come across your post right here and thought I might contribute.

It just so happens that I saw Sylvester and Josephine's grave yesterday! I went to Philadelphia (from Atlanta, where I live) for the funeral of my great-uncle Chaluk. He was buried in the Lithuanian section of Holy Cross Cemetery.

I have been researching Burgess Lithuanian genealogy, their last name originally being Brožis. I found Sylvester and Josephine's grave next to a large Brožis marker for his mother, Marijona Brožis. (Also buried there is Sylvester's sister Nellie Brožis Kibilda and her husband John.) Sylvester's wife is Josephine M. Burgess, whom I discovered just this weekend through a marriage record index as having maiden name "Songol." They were married in Philadelphia in 1923. This is obviously the same person you talked about.

My grandfather's cousin always referred to Sylvester as "Sylvie" and said he and Josephine were pretty well-off financially. They loved to show up at parties and get-togethers. He said that Sylvie could "talk your ear off" and was pretty sociable and friendly. I haven't heard anything specific about Josephine.

I have traced the Burgess/Brožis genealogy back to Manchester, England at the turn of the century where Sylvester was born in Dec 1900 as I stated. A few years before that, the family moved from Lithuania to Manchester where there was a substantial Lithuanian community. Most of my relatives left England before 1910. Sylvie and his mother and siblings came to America in 1909, I believe. I think their dad, Peter, had just died in England, but I'm not totally sure about that.

How exactly are you related to these people? I love finding family members I have never met before. I was given the name Beatrice Stumpo yesterday as someone in that side of the family who maybe can share some more information or stories about them. Does that name sound familiar? Do you happen to know who she is? I will be getting her contact information this week and intend to call her and talk about the Brožis/Burgess family.

If you want pictures of Sylvester and Josephine's grave I can send them to you. Unfortunately I do not have access to them at the moment, but later on today or tomorrow I can send them if you wish.

-Adam Paulukaitis

This Lemuel George Washington Burgess was born in 1881. Not sureif he was born in NC or TN but was in Gilmer Co GA in 1920 and was registered for the WWl draft there also.
There is debate was to whether Lemuel G W Burgess is the son of John Burgess or someone else. Some one has linked him with Lemuel Burgess and Theodocia Cunningham. This couple married in TN (believe it was Roane) and appears in the 1880 census for Cherokee Co NC. Theodocia appears in a daughter's household in 1910 in Pickens Co GA and 1920 in Gordon Co GA. I am looking for confirmation.

I read an article this week written by Michael Burgess/Reginald ? his pseudonym name and his wife Mary Burgess. It came from the genealogy of the Burge(ss)family. It stated that Margaret is believed to have been a daughter of Henry Fewell and Sarah Whiteman(who was the sister of John Whiteman), and the granddaughter of Stephen and Katerine Fewell. A margaret "Burge" is mentioned in the King George Co. Inventory Book #1 (p. 47) on 7 May 1725 O.S. as a co-legatee with her sister, Frances Smith, in the accounting of Henry Fewell's estate; there is no other know Burge(s) family living within fifteen miles of the immediate area. Stephen Fewell, Henry'.... This comes from the Second Generation of Edward Burge(ss) 1692-1759) of King George Co., VA. You can google and find this on the web. A very nice part of the Burge Genealogy plus that of the Fewell. This guy is a very reputable author and researcher.

Francis Burgess (England - South Africa)

Hello,

I'm researching the ancestry of Francis Burgess, born in England c.1800 to Henry Burgess, who at some point after 1823 moved to South Africa where he died in Willowmore on 3 August 1878.

The only baptism certificate I've been able to find for a Francis Burgess born c.1800 to a Henry Burgess is on FamilySearch.org (Batch Number: C052021), where Francis' baptism is given as 24 Dec. 1800, South Molton, Devon. His parents are listed as Henry Burgess and Mary. Can anyone confirm or deny that this is the same Francis that moved to South Africa? And if it is the same man, any further information on Henry and Mary?

Francis was married at least twice, possibly three times. The name of the mother of his first two children is not known.

- His first child, Jane Burgess, was born c.1823 in Birmingham, England, according to her Death Notice. She married Richard Quinton and died in Willowmore, South Africa on 15 May 1898.

- Francis second child, Elizabeth Burgess, married Pieter Frederik Reynier Swanepoel on 21 May 1849.

Francis married his second wife, Anna Margaretha Magdalena Dirker, on 26 Aug. 1838. She died 23 Feb. 1853. Francis had three children with Anna Dirker:

- Francis Henry Burgess, born 21 Oct. 1840, married Magdalena Christina du Pisani, and died 25 July 1883.

- Anna Maria Burgess, born 29 Nov. 1843, married Hendrik Jacobus Swanepoel on 23 Jan. 1860.

- Ellen Charlotte Jane Burgess married Willem Johannes Scheun

Francis third wife was Elizabeth Slade.

Any further information on this family would be most welcome,
Craig
