Im looking for any info about John Thomas Burke, born Jun 24, 1878, in Galway, Ireland. He immigrated in 1902. He ended up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and married Mary Ruane(1875) and had three children, Henry(1909), Patrick and Madaline. I only have his father's name which is Patrick Burke. I know he stayed in Ireland because John requested a passport to travel back to Ireland after his father died. Any info on Patrick Burke would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Burke Families (also Petty), Headford Galway and surrounding area

Hi Holly,

Shipping routes included Galway to Boston in the 1800's.

I have been looking at the Petty family in Headford and they rented over 300 acres in the Headford area. The Petty's in Ballisnahyny had a small holding as far as i can determine. My guess is that the Ballisnahyny Petty's originated in Headford and probably still worked with them to tend to the large (for Ireland) farm. There were two main names listed for land in Headford, Jeremiah and Joseph, and George for Ballisnahyny.

The are now records available that show Irish prison registers and petty (sorry!) sessions and the Pettys only appear once in those files and that was as a victim. Tells you something of the character of the Pettys. A fellow named E.L. Hunt stole some potatoes from Jeremiah in March 1850, a famine year. It appears that the Pettys did not pursue the issue which tells you even more about their character.
- John

SALEM – Mary M. Lodge, 97, passed away at 10:55 p.m. Saturday, May 12, 2012, at Blossom Nursing and Rehab Center.

She was born in Summitville, Ohio (Columbiana County) to the late John C. and Mary Ellen (Matthews) Burke on March 13, 1915.

She was preceded in death by husbands, Joseph Bryan and Albert Lodge, and two brothers, John J. Burke and Francis Burke.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Mary Lou (Bryan) Popa of Salem, Ohio; son David J. (Joan) Bryan of North Olmsted, OH; stepchildren Larry (Priscilla) Lodge, Jerry, (Mary) Lodge and Thom (Karen Lodge); and sister-in-law Marie Burke, whom she thought of as the sister she never had.

She also leaves grandchildren Clyde Wolfgang, Barbara McDonald, Colleen (Dave) Murdock, Shannon (Tim) Wilson, Joe (Kelly) Bryan, Kara (Shawn) Daley and Erin (Kevin) Owsley. In addition, she was blessed to have 17 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She also leaves many close neighbors, friends and the staff at Blossom Rehab, who took such good care of her.

Mary moved to Salem, Ohio with her family when she was eight years old into the family home, where five generations have resided.
She attended St Paul’s Catholic School and graduated from Salem High School in 1932.

She loved reading and creative writing and was manager of one of the first girls’ basketball teams for Salem. Mary would have liked to have gone to college, but it was the Depression, so she went to work at “Kresges” to help support her family.

She had a huge love of politics. She was one of the first women to serve on the Salem City Council. While on council, she was the first woman to serve on the Planning Commission and the Zoning Board.
She held positions as precinct committeeman, and on the County Democratic Executive Committee.

Mary also enjoyed being a poll worker for many years.
She was a member of the Salem Democrat Club and The Salem Women’s Democrat Club.
In 1991, Mary was honored as “Democrat of the Year” with Senator John Glenn presenting her with the award.
She was also present in 1960 as a council member, when presidential candidate John F. Kennedy came to Salem for a campaign stop.

Not only did Mary enjoy local politics, she always kept up on state, country and world political events. She always loved a lively debate on current political happenings and enjoyed the intrigue, idealism, human interest, and sense of accomplishment that came with politics.

In addition to her political interests, Mary served on the board for the Salem YWCA, volunteered for RSVP, belonged to the Ohio Bell Telephone Pioneers.

Mary attended St Paul’s Catholic Parish, most of her life. She was one of the first lay Eucharistic Ministers and delivered communion to shut-ins. She was the first of four generations in the family to attend and graduate from St. Paul’s School.

Mary loved the outdoors, working in her yard, and planting flowers.
She was a member of the Salem Shade Tree Commission, Salem Area Humane Society, and always had a pet in her life.

She was a hard worker and retired from Ohio Bell Telephone Company in 1977, where she worked for 32 years as a service representative.

She was very proud of her Irish heritage and was fortunate enough to make a trip to Ireland for her 75th birthday.

Mary will be greatly missed by her family who will remember her compassion for others, sense of humor, and dedication.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Saint Paul Catholic Church.

Burial will be at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Summitville.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Stark Memorial Funeral Home.

A prayer service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Please visit www.starkmemorial.com to view this obituary online
Hi John,

It is very interesting to know that many of the west coast Irish did come through Boston, which might be why so many settled in New England. I wonder if it was just the shipping route- from Queenstown (now Cobh), Ireland to Boston.

Thanks for attaching this photo. I did come across it as well and cannot seem to find further information just yet. It is the same city my family settled in, but I will have to do more investigating to see if I can link him to my family. When I get a chance, I plan to see if I can find his immigration manifest (which may list family members) as well as census records.

It does seem like you have many connections to Petty's from all over the place! It's very interesting! It appears that many of the Petty's left the area in Ireland and settled in various locations. Hopefully I will be able to discover where. It's all part of this fun puzzle!

Holly

William Burke m. Elizabeth Walker (15 Children)

I am searching for the documented parents of William Burke and any his parents etc. I am also looking for documented confirmation that William had 3 brothers (James C, Calloway, and Archibald).

Notes on Archibald: There are a couple Archibald Burkes, one being a Captain in the Civil War (Confederate) and was wounded. It states that this Archibald enlisted in 1861 at the age of 32. HOWEVER...One of William and Elizabeth's children is named Archibald and he was born in 1835. I am unable to get any census records to match up to the ages etc nor have I found any record that Captain Archibald Burke is the brother of my 3x great grandfather as some have listed on their public family trees as others have William and Elizabeth's son as the Captain Archibald Burke.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

William had 15 children with his wife Elizabeth Walker. They are as follows:

James Monroe
David L
Clarissa
Archibald
Mary Ann
Nancy J
Adeline
Sarah
Ahas Jefferson
Isabell
Margaret Elizabeth
William Wesley (my 3x-great grandfather)
Ellen
Thomas Walker
Harvey Chester
I know how you feel.... I have the same thing going with my Peter Burke. I KNOW when he came here (U.S.) from Germany and when his wife came, but not much else. Yet I know it's out there somewhere because my grandmother had it traced back at least five generations in Germany (she was a genealogist). I may find it yet because I'm only about 10% through her papers.

Good luck to you!

Hi Holly,
My son Patrick and his family spent some time during spring break, including St. Patrick's Day, in New London and was amazed at the number of Irish celebrating there. Many of the early Irish immigrants from the West coast of Ireland came across to Boston and anywhere shipping would take them which probably accounts for so many Irish along the coast of Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

The 'J' Petty with the illegible name may be Jeremiah Petty. See attachment.

I worked with a William Petty here in New York in my early years. He was of Irish descent but genealogy was not on my mind at the time. He was a very bright man who was very generous with his acquired experience and knowledge. So I have touched Petty's on both sides of the Atlantic.

The Eagletons are scattered all over the United States, New York, Boston, Worcester, Buffalo, Iowa, Ohio, St Louis, Manachester UK and Australia and a few left in Ireland.

- John

Hello,

Thanks for your note. I was very excited to see that we may share a common ancestor! I have William Petty's marriage record from 1858 which lists one witness as Susan Petty. I had always wondered if this would have been William's sister, but had not proof. The other witnesses listed is Charles Clarke.

Do you have any other information? I would be happy to share what little information I have.

Looking forward to hearing from you,
Holly

I am interested in the date to validate some that I have. As I said John Spillman was the father of William Thomas who was my father's (Wiliam Welford) father. He was also the father of Spillman Samuel Jackson. My father and his brother have passed away. If you would like any info on this part of the family I'd be happy to supply info. Thank you. Stevens. John Spillmans father was William Henry Burke and his mother was Lucy Amiss. I have dates if you're interested. Yesterday, I was near Orlean and I tried to find the Burke/Amiss Family Cemetery but didn't have any luck. It was raining and I'm going to go back on a nice day.William Henry Burke and Lucy Amiss are buried there.

I have a Mary Burke born in county Galway 1846 or 1847. emigrated to the America in 1866. the record of her NY emigrant bank account is very hard to decipher but i believe she lists her mother as Ellen Ganly, unsure about her father-possibly William. I would love to know more about her Irish roots. She lists on a census as bearing 7 children, 5 of whom are still living.I wonder if she lost 2 children prior to coming to America and marrying Augustus Peters.

Hello,

Do you know where in Galway your Burke relatives are from? It appears that mine resided in Headford, Galway. Unfortunately, I don't have much more information than what I have posted in my original post.

Burke is a VERY common name in that area. It would help if you could include as much information as possible about what you know so far regarding your relatives. Names, dates, location, immigration info, etc all help.

I look forward to your reply.
Hi Holly,

This address should do it.

Ballisnahyny, Shrule
County Mayo, Ireland
A stamp is around 90 cents for UK and Ireland

Give shrule.com a look also under Ancestor Search enter Petty and there are several items aside from the 1901 and 1911 Irish Census. There are two entries involving Baptisms with the father being James Petty. One of the mothers names is transcribed wrong, it should be either Grehan or Greahan. It's possible that this is your James
Petty indicating that the Pettys had no trouble with interfaith marriages since all baptisms listed are Catholic. Incidentally three generation of Eagletons lived in the Parish of Shrule.

If you don't mind telling, what part of the United States did the Pettys immigrate to?

- John
