Ronnie,
Write to me directly at: virginiapeter82@yahoo.com. I will be glad to share what we have found on the Burkey family. My husband's grandfather was Joseph Burkey, b in Princeton, Bureau County, Illinois. His father was Andrew Burkey. Andrew had a brother named Joseph and also one named John, Jr. Their father was John Burkey, b. about 1777
in Alsace-Lorain, France.

There could be a chance since I was told my grandpa's family is from Germany. John Burkey to my knowledge was born in Germany. It am unaware of any possible German last names that had become Burkey. I would love information on my grandpa's side. John Burkey was born 09 OCT 1819 in Schorbach, Alzey, Rheinhessen, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany. He was the first in the US. He died in Lancaster, PA. At some point my grandpa moved from Lancaster, PA to Chicago, IL. It looks at if some of the Burkey family lived near Chicago, IL.

Ronnie,

I don't think this is the same Burkey family since this Joseph Burkey was born in Germany in 1816. It has been a few years since I worked on my husband's Burkey family, but there is a large BURKEY book that has information on many of the branches of the Burkey family along with the various spellings of the family name. I think parts of that book have been posted online, and copies are available in some genealogical libraries. Good luck in your search.
Virginia Peter

Sorry, Reginald Burkey is not a name I am familiar with. My family is from southeastern Pennsylvania in the area of Lebanon and Lancaster counties. I have not come across the Hoover name either. I know there are a lot of Burkeys in Berks County in southeastern PA, but I haven't been able to tie into them. You might try there, but if your family went from Carrolltown to Jamestown, it looks like they went straight north.

Okay, I had never heard of it. I don't have a William T. Burkey I have found yet in my family tree. My great-grandmother was Margaretta (Burkey) Tanner 1892-1954 and her parents were Samuel R. Burkey 1860-1927 and Cambria (Wyatt) Burkey 1871-1938. Samuel's parents were John b. 1819 and Magdalena b. 1822 Burkey and Samuel's siblings were Percival b. 1855, Carline b. 1857, and his twin brother, Daniel b 1860. I did look up the background of the name "Burkey" to see its origin and found it is a German name that was once "Burki" with two dots above the "u" because I wondered from where my Burkey ancestors immigrated. Good luck with your search!

Sadly this and other databases have been moved from public access last year by OMII as the maintenance was becoming an issue.

The good news is that members of OMII can still access these databases and the membership is only $6 a year.

The Kidron database is worth the $6 by itself if you have Berkey/Burkey connections. And there are other, larger Anabaptist databases also.

I am not affiliated with OMII so I hope I did not convey any misinformation.

try http://www.omii.org/

Hello there, yes my Burkeys are from Ness on the wirral. George Albert Burkey(my great grandad), b. 1871, Ness, was a journeyman stonemason, and quite a rogue. His father was George Burkey, b. 1846, his father was William Burkey b.1825, then James Burkey b. 1795, and his father was James Burkey married to Alice, but I can't take the name any further back.

BURKEYS NOT FROM THE USA

Not meaning to be rude but I'm searching for Burkeys from the UK, they seem to arrive around the Wirral in the late 1700's. I'm not convinced of this Swiss/ German / French / Italian connection, I'd have thought a more likely explanation to be an Irish connection, the name mutating from Burke, which originates in the Galty Mountains area / Limerick to Tipperary.

My Burkey line is also of the Wirral, Ness, I have George albert Burkey b 1871 d 1946, George Burkey b. 1846 d.1902, William Burkey b. 1825 d.1873, James Burkey b.1795 d. 1828, James Burkey b.around 1770 and married to Alice Barlow b.around 1767. Thats as far back as I've got with the Burkey's, I suspect they came from Ireland considering Parkgate was a bigger port serving ireland than Liverpool was in those days.

Mary; Thomas A.;Emma Francis; Charles Paul (my grandfather); James Edward; and Raymond J.Burkey. My father was Louis J. Burkey 1913-2002. (married to Theresa A. Cleary 1919-1992.
I am gathering as much as I can find on this part of the family and have been in touch with Fr. Blain Burkey who is the real expert on these Burkeys. I knew my Grandfather and his wife Rose Bannon as we all lived in Tacoma Washington. My name is Teresa (Wilson) Kato and the message and familytree info is mine.

According to the records I have collected from my cousins, Anton Burkey in our familytree was born in 1811 in Magdau, Aargau, Switzerland
He married Anne Huff --- No info on her, but she died in Paris, Illinois .
He had a son Anthony Burkey born in 1836 born in Muskingum County, OH ( Falls is a town in that county) but he married Emma Donahue born in 1846--supposedly from Pennsylvania (not much info on her)
There is a brother, Paul Burkey, born in 1847 married to a Miss (no 1st name) Stainaker.
It sounds like we are of the same family (how exciting is this !!!)but I have NO info on Paul Burkey only the descendants of Augustine Burkey (my great-grandfather) who was the brother of Anton(Anthony)--your great-great grandfather.
Cool ! His mother's name was Emma. Anton's father was Swiss and his mother was from France. I think they might be part of the family you have described here. I grew up in Tacoma Washington where my grandfather settled with his wife Rose (Bannon). I wonder if Anton was the child of one of the families you mention, which I guess would be my great great grandfather. can you help me??

The estate papers of his father-in-law has "Burky". He may be buried at St Henry's Cemetery at Moselem Springs, Berks Co, PA. The 1820 Windsor Twp census lists a Joseph "Borgy". There is an 1832 estate filing in the Berks County Courthouse for Joseph who died in Windsor Township.

The Montgomery publication refers to visits between brothers. He married 9. Catherine Aft. 1748.
9. Catherine, born in France; died Aft. Mar 1782 in Prob Bern Township, Berks Co, PA.

Notes for Johann Jacob Bircki:
"John Jacob Birki" arrived in Philadelphia on September 19, 1765, on the English ship, "Betsey", John Osman Commander. The ship left from (prob.) Rotterdam with a stop in Cowes, England. The ship's manifest did not record any women or children and it is probable that his two sons, Johann Jacob and Joseph, accompanied their father. Gundershoffen, Alsace, France is located north, north east of Strasburg.

The Gundershoffen baptismal church record of Johann lists Abraham Hauser as one of the god parents.

There is some documentation on first wife, Anna Barbara Uhlmann, however, there is no confirmation of Catharine as a wife except for his estate filing.

There is a DAR record (National Number 634037) for a Pvt. Jacob Bergy/Bergey b. c.1731; d. after 1794 married to a Catharine. A lineage search of this record proves that he is not this Johann Jacob Bircki.

Jacob died in testate in March or April 1782. Catharine "Burky" was the administrator of his estate. The estate inventory listing was as of 4/2/1782 and 4/5/1782. It was filed 10/2/1782. Charles Shoemaker was the attesting authority and John Sherdel(?) and Richard Seaman prepared the inventory his personal estate which totaled 80 pounds, 14 shillings, and 7 pence. Included in the inventory were 2 cows, stear and heifer, heifer with calf, 1 heifer, 4 hogs, 2 lambs 2 sheep, 1 ram, 1 mare, 1 horse, and 1 colt. The total estate value was 122 pounds, 11 shillings, 11 pence.

More About Johann Jacob Bircki:
Immigration: 19 Sep 1765, "Betsey"

More About Catherine:
Immigration: 19 Sep 1765, "Betsey"

More About Johann Bircki and Catherine:
Marriage: Aft. 1748

Children of Johann Bircki and Catherine are:
i.	Johann Jacob Burky, born 19 May 1749 in Gundershoffen, Alsace, France4; died 13 May 1819 in Bern Twnshp, Berks Co, PA5; married Catherine Giseler Abt. 1777; born Unknown; died in Bern Twnshp, Berks Co, PA.

Notes for Johann Jacob Burky:
Johann Jacob probably accompanied his father on the English ship, "Betsey", which arrived in Philadelphia on September 19, 1765.

Jacob resided in Upper Bern Township, Berks County, PA, according to the 1790 census and having a household consisting of one male over 16 years of age, 5 males under 16, and one female. Land Warrants indicate a grant of 22 acres of land in Bern township to Jacob on 4/29/1790 (Book P; # 60; pages 09/10.0 and 018/10.2) This land was subsequently owned by his son, Daniel, afterwhich time it was acquired by Daniel's son, Benjamin. There is a Revolutionary War record for Jacob Borkey of Berks County serving as a Private in the 3rd Company comanded by Capt. Jacob Shradle.

Bern Township tax records for Jacob indicate that the family was very poor. Comparisons of the other townships in the county, e.g., Greenwich and Richmond, the residents of Bern Township were poor. Jacob Burky was among the "poorest of the poor". Further, the variation in the spelling of the name suggests that the family may have been unable to read or write. Tax records are as follow:
1785: cow and horse (no land indicated); 20 pounds value; tax of 3 shillings. (Burkey)
1788: 14 acres land (14 pounds val.), 1 horse (6 pounds), 1 cow (2 pounds) for a total 24 pounds taxable value and a 4 shilling tax. (Burky) -- From a tax page of 30 people, only two paid less tax.
1789: 1 horse and 1 cow for a 4 shillings tax. (Borky)
1791: 20 acres land, 1 horse, 1 cow for a tax of 7 shillings. (Borky)
1792: 23 acres land, 1 horse, 1 cow for a total value of 30 pounds and a 1 shilling 10 pence tax. (Berky)
1799: 20 acres land (80 pound value), 1 horse (16 pounds), 1 cow (4 pounds) for a total 100 pound value and a $.20 tax. (Burke written in German) -- From a tax page of 32 people, only one paid less tax.
1801: $.33 tax. (Burke) -- From a tax page of 71 people, only three paid less tax.
1802: 20 acres (80 pound value) and 2 horses (16 pounds) for a total 96 pound value. (name written in German)
1803: $.66 tax. (Burke) -- From his tax page, only one paid less tax.
1805: $.53 tax. (Borcky)
1806: $.07 tax. (Borkey)
1807: $.14 tax. (Borkey)
1809: $.09 tax. (Borkey)
unidentified year (possibly 1805): land, 1 cow, and a taxable estate of $53. From his tax page, only one paid less tax.

The will and estate papers of "Jacob Borky -- aka Jacob Borgey and Jacob Borkey" (papers contain the three spellings) are filed with the Berks County Courthouse. The will, written in German, was prepared in 1818 and filed with the court on May 22, 1819. The will is signed with an "X" notation with a name that appears to be "Jacob Borky". The "X" signature designation suggests that Jacob could not write his name. The witnesses to the will, Henry Gittle and Jacob Lob, were present when the will was probated. Two of Jacob's sons, "Jacob Borgey" and "Henry Borgey" were executors for the estate "of Jacob Borgey, late of Bern Township, Berks County" and (together) received a total compensation of $20. The estate was valued at $139.01, with $92.65 of that value expressed in English monetary values, 34 pounds, 13 shillings, and 4 pence.

The estate papers as published for the public:
"BORKY (BURGE), JACOB, Bern.
August 15, 1818 - May 22, 1819.
Children: Henry, John, Elizabeth, Daniel, Wilhelm, David, Jacob.
Should Jacob not appear within 2 years after my death he shall have but £1.
Exrs: Sons Henry and John.
Wit: Henry GUTTEL and Jacob LOB."

There is a discrepancy in the estate's executor listing. The published report (immediately above) names "Henry and John" and the actual inventory list names "Jacob Borgey and Henry Borgey, Sons, Executors of the Testament and Last Will of Jacob Borgey late of Bern Township Berks County".

A family genealogy was compiled by the descendants of William F. Burkey and presented in the "Historical and Biographical Annals of Berks County, PA" by Morton L. Montgomery; J. H. Burns Co. 1909, publishers. This Jacob would be the grandfather to William F. Burkey. Close scrutiny of the Montgomery record suggests that this Jacob cannot be the son of the Jacob Burcki who came to America in 1733 on the English ship "Hope". The Montgomery publication also refers to visits between brothers. These "visits" were probably between the family of Joseph (living across the Schuylkill River in Windsor Township) and Johann's family.

More About Johann Jacob Burky:
Immigration: 19 Sep 1765, "Betsey"

Notes for Catherine Giseler:
One genealogy gives her name as Catherine, b. 6/2/1759, daughter of Jacob and Catherine Giseler. Jacob Giseler may be the Jacob Geeseler who immigrated to America 9/25/1751. This ancestry is not proven. There are two other possible ancestral links.

The Bern Township 1790 census lists a "Jacob Gingelsberger" as probably living next door to Jacob Burky. He had 100 acres of land, 2 or 3 horses, and 2 or 3 cows. His household in 1790 comprised himself, 4 male children, and 6 women. He is on the Bern Township tax lists as Gendelsperger, Gentzelperger, Genselberger, Geinkelsberger, and Genkelsberger (1767 through 1791 and perhaps longer). No such name can be found in any genealogy files or in any other historical records.

George Adam Geiss (1725-1784 and from Freisbach, Saarland, Germany) and his wife Anna Barbara Haag/Haak (1738-1814) lived in Bern Township and, according to his grave marker in the old Bernville cemetery, he had 6 sons and 5 daughters. The children have been accounted for, but George Adam was 13 years older than Anna Barbara, a condition that suggests that he probably had an earlier wife who bore him children. At the age of 29, "jerick Adam Kuys", as his name appears on the ship's manifest, arrived in America 24 September 1753 on the English ship "The Peggy". The shlip's manifest notes that 20 unidentified female immigrants accompanied the named men. George Adam Geiss is a possible ancestor.

More About Johann Burky and Catherine Giseler:
Marriage: Abt. 1777

ii.
