I've traced my gg grandfather's descendants to date and have extensive information. My gg grandfather was Jerry M. Burkhalter. He was born August 7, 1819 in Wilkes County, GA. His parents were Nathaniel and Celia Williams. Yes, he was a slave. He came out of slavery amassing a fortune and was written up in the history of Jackson County, Illinois in 1878. During slavey he was a blacksmith. He was never owned by anyone with the name Burkhalter.
Where did he get the name Burkhalter? Does anyone have info on him during his servatude?
