Hi,
I came across this today when trying to research Gustave Burkhardt from Chicago. I am researching him as I believe he was an inventor in the late 1800's and actually invented a Bowling Alley Light that we stumbled across this last month for a history channel show. I found all sorts of patents from him so you may want to search Gustave Burkhardt Chicago Patents and you will find some interesting things.

Hope this helps.

Brad
I have the clipping of my paternal grandfather's death announcement. It was in the Pottsville, pa newspaper july 17, 1963. His name was Robert W. Burkhardt don't have his b-date but the year should be around 1899 in Delano, pa, he died at age 64 in Lehighton pa. In the newspaper clipping it lists his parents as Edward and Bridget (Llewellyn) Burkhardt.
He has a sister listed as Mrs Leona Reichard of Royersford
Don't know if there were any other children.

What I know but not in the write up
Robert had one child with Cecelia (Young)Burkardt..Roland Burkhardt (my dad)

With his 1st wife Rose(Brown)Burkhardt he had 5 daughters and 2 sons...I have all their names if needed.
as far as I can tell they are all deceaced. My son did a family tree and I couldn't go back very far on my dad's side. I've been trying to look up anything and that is when I saw your post from several years ago. I have found somethings on Robert's kids with his first wife but that is it so far.
Not sure if any of that helps your or not. If you would want I could scan the clipping and e-mail it to you.
Have a good day,
Roberta (Burkhardt) Schwenk

Re: Christian Burkhardt from Burkhardt, WI (St. Croix County)

Christian Burkhardt, to whom the village of Burkhardt will remain a perpetual monument for generations to come, is one of those men whose energy and ability have contributed so greatly to the growth and development of the industrial interests of the St. Croix valley. He was born in the town of Reichenbach, in the famous Black Forest district of the Kingdom of Wurttemberg, Germany, September 26, 1834, son of Christian and Barbara (Eilber) Burkhardt, who lived and died in Germany. The former was a millwright, and thoroughly trained his son in that trade. At the age of twenty years Christian came to America and went to work at Buffalo, N. Y., where he was employed at his trade by John T. Noye. When, in 1856, he went to work on a mill at Warsaw, Ill.; in 1857 went to work on mills in Illinois and Iowa, working at his trade. He then followed his trade in Chicago and vicinity for three years, and in 1862 entered into partnership with his brother in an enterprise known as the Buffalo Farina Mills at, Buffalo, N. Y. It was during this connection that he became interested in Wisconsin, and in 1868 he came to this state and located at Hudson. He at once started a mill on the situation of he present large plant. This was burned in 1887, entailing a loss of $40,000. Undaunted by this disaster, he commenced to build the one, which now bears his name. This plant is fully equipped with all the latest machinery and up-to-date appliances. It has an elevator and planing mill, and its capacity is 275 barrels a day when it is in full operation. During the erection of this plant he bought an interest in the Willow River Milling Company, at Hudson, Wis.; was manager of the mills in the year 1888, and soon afterward became sole proprietor of this plant, which was turned into an electric light and power plant. In addition to this Mr. Burkhardt has built two sawmills, one at Black Brook and the other at Richardson, Wis., now known as Marsh Lake, in partnership with Math. Hall, of St. Paul, under the firm name of Hall &Burkhardt. They operated these mills for a short time, employing as high as 100 men the year around. In October 1907, Mr. Burkhardt had his interests incorporated under the firm name of Burkhardt Milling and Electric Power Company, of which he is president and general manager. This company owns the mills at Brukhardt and the electric plant at Hudson. Mr. Burkhardt also owns the old Boardman mill, not now in operation, and 1,000 acres of land in St. Croix County. Mr. Burkhardt was married in 1861 to Ernstine Beer, a sister of Julius Beer, whose sketch appears elsewhere in this volume. Mrs. Burkhardt, deceased, was a lady of many accomplishments and was a worthy helpmeet of her husbands in all his endeavors. Twelve children have blessed this union, ten living: Louisa, married to Godfred Lewerer, who attends to his father-in-laws agricultural interests; Franz P., who is in charge of the flour mill and has also proven himself an able man in the office; Augusta, who is in California; Bertha, who is declared by her father to be the best bookkeeper he has ever had in his office, and who has the details of her fathers business at her finger tips; Ida, who has just spent a winter in California; Lina, who works in the office; Emma, who is Mrs. Kessel, of Merriam Park, St. Paul, and Elfrieda, Esther and Helene, who live at home. Mr. Burkhardt is a strong Republican and has served the town in several capacities, being on the town board in his earlier days, although he has been too busy with his work to seek political honors to any great extent. For forty years he was a member of the Masonic fraternity. The family faith is that of the English Lutheran denomination, and all the children have been confirmed at Stillwater, Minn. The subject of this sketch is a self made man. He came to this country poor, and worked as a day laborer, even working for as low a wage as 75 cents a day and furnishing his own tools. Although he has achieved financial success he has not forgotten that there are other things besides money that go to make up success in life, and he has not only given all his children a good education, but has also spent considerable time in travel. Three times he has visited his old home in Germany and he was present during the earthquake at San Francisco, having many interesting stories to tell of this disaster. Although now past the allotted three score years and ten, Mr. Burkhardt is hale and hearty and looks after his business with energy and ability that is the envy of many a younger man.
Charles is my great great grandfather and his picture is hanging in my living room at this very moment. The family was lutheran and many of us still live in and around NYC. A few of us can still speak German to this day, such as myself. Minna(Wilhelmine)Glutsch was Nikolaus' wife's maiden name.I beleive Nickolaus and Minna were originally from the area around Koblenz,Germany, but I have yet to confirm that with German records. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about what happened to Charles' sister's. Also just an interesting thing: on Charles birth certificate it lists his actual name as "Christian". If you are in fact descended from Louise, then I should say nice to meet you cousin. -Arthur Burkhardt

Burkhardts in NY and IL

Looking for more info on a family of Burkhardts that immigrated to NY, NY from Germany and eventually went north to Oswego, Oswego Co., NY (though ?may not have stayed there long). At least two of the children (sisters) Louise and Augusta went to Chicago, IL.

(Elisabeth?) "Louise" C. Burkhardt (b. May 1864/d.1921) is my father's maternal grandmother. She married William Burr (brickmaker) originally from London, Ontario, Canada. His record is just as mysterious as her family before 1900s. Have no idea where he enter the US, where they marrried or when they left for Chicago.

Augusta ("Gussie") never married but lived with Louise and later her niece Jessie Dillingham.

I think the following Jan. 7th 1870 Census is Louise's family- 12th Elect. Dist., 10th Ward, NY, NY - living on Norfolk between Delancy & Rivington Streets-

BURKHARDT, Nicolas (possibly spelled Nikolaus) -48 (b.1822?) - shoemaker
, Mennie (misspelled? Minnie/Wilhemina?) - 40
, Francis - 9 (born in NY)
, Anna - 9 (b. in NY)
, Louise - 7 (b. in NY)
, Charles - 3 (b. in NY)
Note: Augusta was ten years younger than Louise so she would not have yet arrived in this census. My father maintains that Augusta was born in Oswego. Her sister Louise worked as a housekeeper for a minister, his son, and daughter-in-law in Oswego in her late teens as evidenced by a Census Record.

This family may have been Lutheran but I'm not sure.

I have the correct Census records for the sisters from 1900s on but really don't know anything about any siblings, where their parents died, or were from in Germany. Thanks for your interest.
- Mrs. David Gates

I ran across info on the William Burkhardt you mention here when trying to look for my Burkhardt relatives on Find a Grave. His full name was Johann Fredrich Wilhem Burkhart. Born Nov 1, 1828. Died Jan. 26, 1892. Just Google "Find a Grave". He and his wife Anna Eberhardina Laungraf are buried in Forest Home Cemetary in Forest Park, IL. Denise Townsend created the records March 31, 2005. His Memorial # is: 10708372. Anna's memorial # is:10708379. There is a lot of information from these two records and photos of each of them! I don't have any other info. about your family other than these two records.

If you have trouble retrieving the info I've bookmarked the pages.
-Mrs. David Gates

Is it possible this is my several times removed grandfather John George Burkhardt b. 1754 in Canton Basle, Switzerland. He served in Pennyslvania's VonHeer's Cavalry, which was created by an act of Congress to serve as General George Washington's body guards. He married Mary Barbara Fox 30 Jan 1776. If this sounds like your ancestor, I'd be happy to share anything I have on his forebears and my side of the family up to date. :)

Looking for Relatives of Hargis Burkhardt

Hargis is my great-grandfather. I am trying to find any information on him. My family knows that he lived around Hazard, kentucky an at one point he was married to Nancy Mullins. They divorced and he remarried but we know nothing of his new family or when he died.

o not h ave a great deal of info on Anton Burkhart or Adellia Beier Burkhart. Adellia (Adeleid, Adelia, Adeline)Beier was my relative. Do you have any dates on Elizabeth or where they lived or came from in Europe. 1880 census finds them in Washington Co. Oregon. 1920 they are found in Portland, OR. Anton was born in Wurtemburg in abt 1855, Adellia was born in Austria in abt 1854. Their daughter, listed as Mar. Anna born in abt 1878 in Nebraska and Jacob, a son, in Oregon in abt 1879. Anton died in 1933. Adellia survived him. Does any of this info fit into what you have.

Hi,
My mother spoke of an uncle "Gus" and she had a cousin named Matilda. Matilda died several years ago in Port St. Lucie Florida. She was married to Howard Gagg. I don't believe they had any children. Any connection?

Anna (Kanke) Burkhardt, b.1895, wife of Reinhold Burkhardt, lived Wayne Co., IN

I have an original 5”x7” photograph of “Ella & Frank Hackman & Anna Hackman Burkhardt”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photo was taken in Richmond (Wayne Co.) IN, and Fred looks about 65, Ella about 50 and Anna is about age 10.

I found the family of Fred Hackman in the 1900 census for Richmond, IN, showing his date of birth as May 1836; Ellen Apr 1860; and Anna Kanke, age 5, a niece, born Mar 1895. The 1910 Richmond census shows Fred as age 52 (meaning 1858); Ellen, age 50 (meaning 1860) and Annie Kanke, age 15 as “adopted daughter”.

OneWorldTree shows Anna Hackman married Reinhold Burkhardt, whose DOB was Feb 1888. I found Reinhold and Anna Burkhardt in the 1930 censuses for Wayne Co., IN.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Fred and Ella/Ellen Hackman or Anna Kanke Burkhardt.
