Hello,
It's been quite some time since you posted that message. I have just learned that we are related to the Burkhardt family. Does anyone have any information on a Lillian Burkhardt from the Greater Metro Detroit area. I believe she lived on the East side. She was born about 1892, married Percy L. Critcher about 1926 and had a daughter named Shirley Phyllis Critcher in 1928. Lillian was my mom's grandmother and Shirley was my mom's mother (my Grandmother). Lillian passed away in 1967 and Shirley passed away in 2008. I am hoping there are Burkhardt relatives still around in Michigan that is related to Lillian. My mom's birth name was Theresa Ann Critcher and we think she was named after a Theresa Burkhardt. Any help is greatly appreciated. My email address is jmgmarketing@aol.com. Thank you, Jacqui

Hi John,

I certainly appreciate your reply to my posting; however, your John and mine are not the same person.

I know very little about John, but what I have is posted below:

JOHN J. BURKARTE (alias: John Burkhart) applied for a disability pension June 11, 1889. Mary G., his widow, applied for a pension on September 15, 1891. John was discharged by General Order on July 12, 1865.

If his wife was "Mary Gertrude" (as in Mary G.), we might have a connection. Also, John probably died in 1891, since his wife applied for a pension in that year ... the usual time of applying was within two weeks of death.

Thanks,

Joe
morse73@ptd.net

Joe,
I'm not sure if my ancestor is the one you are looking for, as I've not done detailed research on his background. I do "know" that he served in the Civil War, but have not documented it yet. Below is the information that I have from my mother, who wrote this in 1943/4 while still in high school.

John Ray

John Joseph Burkhart was born on April 12, 1832 in Germany and brought to America in 1844. He grew up on his fathers farm in Lorain County and was educated there.

He married Gertrude Peiffer, who was also a native of Prussia, Germany. She was very young when her parents, John Joseph and Margeruite (Zunger) Pieffer, crossed the ocean to America. John and Gertrude were married on May 7, 1855 at Saint Threasa's Catholic Church in Lorain County. They were farmers and owned 40 acres—Lott 55—in Sheffield Township in Lorain County in 1857. In 1863, they sold their farm and moved to Palmer Township in Putnam County, Ohio where they purchased 80 acres of land. Later they purchased another 80 acres and, an additional 30 acres of farm land.

As well as a farmer, John was a stock raiser, an assessor for one year and a township trustee for nine years. John also fought with the Union Army durning the Civil War.

John and Gertrude had twelve children. Their raised their family on their farm near New Bavaria, Ohio. John had an unfortunate accident when he was kicked in the head by a horse and as a result he lost an eye.

Both John and Gertrude are burried in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Cementery which is located about two miles east of New Bavaria on Ridge Road.

I have an original cabinet card photograph of Emma Burkhart, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photo was taken in Rochester (Monroe Co.) NY, and she looks to be about age 16.

I found Emma with her parents in the 1880 census for Rochester (Monroe Co.) at age 3, daughter of Johan A. and Anna M. The person who owned the photo misspelled the surname, however this Emma Burkhart matches perfectly the Emma in the photo.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Emma Burkhart.

I was reading over some old postings when I came across Moses. I have a Moses from Lancaster county PA. He was married to Melinda. They had a daughter Jennie. Andrew was also another name listed for Moses. He is related to Augustus who lived near by and was born 1855. Augustus was my gggrandfather who disappeared. Does any of this sound familiar?

U.S. Air Force, Retired Robert "Bob" C. Burkhart, 84, passed away peacefully, April 18, 2009

MSGT. ROBERT BURKHART U.S. Air Force, Retired Robert "Bob" C. Burkhart, 84, born July 4, 1924, in Taft, Calif., passed away peacefully, April 18, 2009, at home, in the company of his family. Bob was one of nine children, and the last survivor of his generation. Born to the King family of California, he and one sister, Hazel "Anna," were later adopted and raised by Charles and Blanche Burkhart of Santa Barbara, Calif. Bob loved people, family and all varieties of sports. His interest in sports started while attending Santa Barbara High School, where he was a member of the varsity track and field team, and it continued thoughout his life. Bob was a superb table tennis player -- ranked nationally both as a young man, and later, as a senior citizen. Well into his 70's, Bob was still an active participant in sports and was recognized as one of Nevada State's Senior Olympians. Bob was also a veteran who served the nation proudly in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and later, as a career member of the U.S. Air Force. During World War II, Bob served aboard the USS Rochambeau (AP-63), a troop transport that saw action in the Guadalcanal Campaign of 1942/43 and also supported naval operations at Noumea, Suva, Bora Bora, New Zealand, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. After World War II, Bob switched from the Navy to the newly created Air Force. After retiring from the U.S. Air Force in 1969, he continued Federal employment with the U.S. Postal Service for a number of years, first at Port Hueneme and later at Hemit, Calif. Bob was married three times and widowed twice. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Hazel; second wife, Edith; third wife, Norma; a grandson, Michael E. Brandise; and two great-granddaughters, Celestial Newton and Olivia Irelin Brandise Hyten. Bob is survived by his sons, Robert L. Burkhart and David (Wendy) Wright; daughters, Diane (Harry) Brandise, Georgia Brandise and Marsha (Jack) Barkley; 20 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Juliet Ouijano, director of the Rose of Sharon Group Home, for her exemplary care and devotion to Bob prior to his passing. Her dedication, love and service to Bob will not be forgotten. Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. Thursday, April 23, with the funeral immediately following, both at the LDS Castle Ridge Ward Chapel, 1525 Guilford Drive, in Henderson. A graveside service will follow at 1:20 p.m., at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Buchanan Blvd., Boulder City.
Kenny- how are you related to Sara? Sara's Great-Grandfather, Grover Cleveland Burkhart, a.k.a. Bud, was my mother-in-law's uncle. My mother-on-law was the late Geraldine Burkhart-Debenport, born 30 Sept 1913 Martinsburg, WV; died 27 Dec 2001 Fairfield, IL. Her father was Allen Snodgrass Burkhart, born 19 Aug 1888 Berkeley County, WV; died 29 Jan 1960 at Memorial Hospital in Martinsburg. Geraldine was his oldest child. Do you have any information on Allen & Bud's brother Charles? All I have is he was born Charles B. Burkhart October 1883 (this was from a census record). Also do you happen to have their sister Maggie's (Margaret Ann) date of death? Thanks, & looking forward to hearing from you.

Well, I know my Daniel was born on 12-9-1857 in Missouri. That information was gleaned from census information and his death certificate. I have conflicting information as to his parents. His death certificate lists his fathers name as Jeffery with his mothers maiden name as Kennedy.

I have found a George Burkhart (Married to Sarah Kennedy) in Benton, Knox, Missouri with a son Daniel that was born the same time. I speculate this is actually his family. I have no verification of that though.

My aunt tells me that her father (Ralph, Daniels son) didn't speak much of his parents so I am going with the assumption that my great uncle Herb, when giving information for Daniels death certificate was wrong in his fathers fathers name. If any of that makes sense.

Do you have a connection to this family?

Lynda

My Mom always said George Jacob was 115 yrs old, but I am coming to a point that I don't think anyone really knows.(lol) The spelling of names and dates from census which is approximately one to two years off depending on when the birthday was, is often the cause of a lot of age differences that can throw you off. Anyway hope this helps. I am trying to figure out who all those kids and wives were. If you have any input let me know. I know all about George C and Jacob. I know their wives and kids and B-days. Sue
