She had DNA conducted on one of the male Burnells and found our origin is the Akan People of Ghana. When she provided me with that information, I now have a new sense of belonging.

Yes, I have a sister in Austell and a brother in GA, as well. My sister has been there for about thirty years but my brother just moved a few years ago from Michigan.

Regarding our origin, I received information that our family is Akan People of Ghana. This was determined through DNA testing on one of our male Burnell relatives. If you know anyone who went to the Family Reunion this past Summer in Michigan, they should have a copy of our Tree.

Hope that helps cuz!

It is good to hear that you have an Aunt that may still hold some information that could prove very useful. Please see if she has any information regarding the family origins. I believe that the Burnell's were from Alabama. There is some question as thier ethnic origins African, Caucasian and possibly Native American. In addition, to Ispham's brother Nimrod who is my Great Great Grandfather. They lived on farms next to one another in Leake Township, Nevada County, Arkansas in the 1870 census.
Thanks for your response. I was unable to attend the Burnell reunion in Michigan this past summer. Queen Esther Zackery Yarbourough and Mrs. Odessa Burnell Zackey gave me a copy of the family history for Isom's family.

One of things I have had done is to have a DNA test done to determine where in Africa the male (Isam and Nimrod) Burnell family may have come from. Ernest Burnell who lives in Saginaw, Michigan, did the test for me. From the test completed by African Ancestry, the male Burnells share an ancestry with the Akan people of Ghana.

I will keep in touch. You can email me directly at fohaywood@sbcglobal.net.

Lets keep in touch and share that info on the family.
My first name is Frances but I am called Delores by the family.

Delores
Thanks for your response regarding Isom. After speaking with another line of the Burnell family, we have decided that Isom/Isphan was a brother of Nimrod, my great great grandfather. I had the opportunity to meet Odessie Burnell Zackery of Stephen, Arkansas. Her father John Lilly Burnell was a grand or great grandson of Isom Burnell. I have been given a copy of that line (John Lilly Burnell) genealogy.

I visited the Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Stephens Arkansas where Nimrod, Ed and Ispham are buried. The spelling on the tombstone for Isom is Ispham.

If I didn't include the info in a previous email. My grandmother was Cora Burnell Hughes, daugher of Ed Burnell and her father Ed was a son of Nimrod. The relative who help me to reach this relationship decision great great grandmother was Harriet Burnell a daughter of Nimrod. Harrriet Burnell married Haril Kendrick.

I would be more than please to share my information about the Nimrod side of the family. However I have not quite figured out how to do the email of the data correctly.

I hope to keep in touch. You can emai me directly at fohaywood@sbcglobal.net.

I am Delores to the family because I was named after my mother also a Frances.

Take Care,
Delores Owens Haywood

Yes we are, it appears we would be 4th cousins. Nimrod Burnell was my Great Great Grandfather and he and Isham (Isom) Burnell were brothers. Nimrod’s daughter Harriet was my Great Grandmother who married Haril Kendrick. They migrated to the Paris, Texas area after the 1900 census. By the 1960’s my grandfather Benjamin Harrison Kendrick (son of Haril and Harriet) and his children migrated to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where my father Ezell Kendrick currently resides. Would like to find out more about Isham's side of the family...please feel free to contact me.

Hello Frances, I am so glad to see that someone else is looking for information on Isham or the Burnell's in general. I have received an email from an Isham descendant. It appears that some of his grandchildren migrated to Michigan.

Also, a few days ago I invited you to my family tree. I was thrilled to see that you are a descendant of Ed Burnell and Elvira Kendrick. I having been trying to uncover more information about them. As you can see I am a Kendrick, and Harriett Burnell was my great grandmother who would also be your Great Aunt (if I understand the connection correctly). She married Haril Kendrick (11 Children resulted from this union) and migrated to the Paris, Texas area along with some of the other Burnell family members, who also married into the Kendrick family. I have picture of Harriett which I would be more than happy to share with you. Please contact me when you can I may have information that you would be interested in. EzellwMail@aol.com

By the way, do you have relatives in Atlanta, GA?
Cheryl - ellgee_2000@yahoo.com

I am somehow related to Isom/Ispham/Isphen. He is related to my great grandfather Nimrod Burnell. His tombstone is in the cemetery at the Mt. Vernon AME Church in Stephens.

Ed Burnell is my grandfather. His daughter Cora Burnell Hughes is my grandmother. In a written family list, my aunt has listed Ispham as brother to Nimrod.

I would be interested in sharing information.
Frances owens Haywood

Birth record for William:-

William James Burnal born March qtr 1863 District of Reigate ref: 2a 141

James Burnal b 1842 parents James Burnale & Maria Strudwick marriage Sept qtr 1837 District of Reigate ref: 4 349

1841 census:
Smallfield, Burstow, Surrey
William Burnal 55 Bricklayer Surrey
Mary Burnall 55 Surrey
James Burnal 25 Surrey
Maria Burnal 25 Wife Surrey
Mary Burnal 20 Surrey
Elizabeth Burnal 12 Surrey
Mary Burnall 1 month Surrey

To ascertain which Burnall you are looking at you need to get both marriage certificates & check fathers names & witnesses. Maria went on to marry Thomas Field, so he may be listed as father.

To confuse you even more, I think you're looking for this marriage.
James Burnal to Emma Mary (or Mary Emma) Hill Dec qtr 1861 District of Reigate ref: 2a 223

James was still living with his parents in the 1861 census, so I reckon this is the one you're looking for, which would tie in with William's birth followed by his brother Jesse (Jun qtr 1865 District of Reigate ref: 2a 137)

Good luck
I am researching Alice Burnell or Burnal born 1872 Reigate district. In 1891, age 18, she was with her sister Sarah, as a visitor, at the District Philanthropic Farm School Reigate Foreign with her sister Sarah age 23. Family anecdotes say she bore an illegitimate son James soon afterwards. This son is shown in 1901 with Henry J Reeve & family, as adopted son & family anecdote state that Henry was his natural father. James married as James Reeve & he was my son in law's grandfather.

According to earlier census Alice's parents were James born Burstow Surrey & Emma born Westbury Wilts. Their eldest son is shown as William born about 1862/3. William is the only child I have been unable to find in birth records, but if he was James William, known as William to avoid confusion as his father was also James, this could be the reason I could not trace him!!!!

A query has arisen as someone else tracing this family believes re Alice's parents - Emma was Emma Hill who married James Burnel Q4 1859 East London whereas I have James William Burnell & Emma Maria Smith 25/12/1859 St Giles Cripplegate East London, (ref LDS IGI) & BMD Q4 1859 East London. Emma Hill was also from Westbury Wilts.

Can you help with my quandary as to who is correct? My email address is in lower case, SNIKWAHRM@HOTMAIL.COM

Regards

Margaret

Ronnie Burnell was my father, Albert William Burnell was my grandfather, and William Goodrick Burnell and Elizabeth Jane Simpson were my grandparents. It seems that we share a common ancestor. I would greatly appreciate learning the history of my grandfather after he left Durham, England. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Dorothy Wilks (nee Burnell)

Hi Everyone!
During the past few minutes I have read all the entries to this board to date, all 12 of them, covering the last seven years!!! It is good to see that there are Burnell family members living in many different areas of Great Britain.

My Mother's Mother (Annie Marie BURNELL b. 1883) was born in London, as was her Father (Henry Edward BURNELL b. 1859) and his Father (Henry Edward BURNELL b. 1820). It would be very interesting to make contact with anyone who had any info regarding this branch of the Burnell family. How about it ?

Henry Kuhn, in Canada
