Have you got a death date for Elizabeth Harling (Burnell)?

I found one that gives her death as 1868 in the Isle of Wight. But you say that she died within a year of her marriage to George Burnell. Is this a different Elizabeth Harling?

the two elizabeth that george married were elizabeth togood and elizabeth herling both isle of wight elizabeth herling died within a year of the marriage so had time to have your elizabeth maybe she died in childbirth, george had a daughter mary with elizabeth togood who we can follow in one census with her parents, george was missing from this census but your elizabeth was not mentioned which leads me to think she was his child with the other elizabeth who died ,this was elizabeth herling his first marriage on the isle of wight,

Her relationship with Samuel G Cox wasn't that much better either. I look forward to having access to your tree. I am sure it will fill in my missing links.

Can anyone help me find out whether George Burnell was the father of Elizabeth Dorothy Dorrill Burnell, who was born in Cowes, Isle of Wight, Hampshire, circa 1834. Elizabeth was later "adopted" by her aunt, Mary Burnell who lived in Brighton in 1851.

Any information would be very helpful.

I just began seriously searching for information yesterday, but I found something that may help. My father, Arthur Eugene Burnell, was the son of Arthur Edward Burnell who left Bristol, England, somewhere after 1891 and lived in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Arthur Edward marries Mary Duncan (also an immigrant but from Ireland). They have two children, my father and a daughter named May. Hope this helps in some way. Donna Burnell

Hello,
I have a fair amount of information. Barbara Ward, Harold's elder daughter has been researching the Burnell family history too. I met up with her just before Christmas.

It would seem that the Burnells originated from the Exmoor area in the 1800s. There were two or three possibly four Burnell families in Bristol. One notably in Bedminster and perhaps another in the Bitton area. These do not appear to relate to us.

Are you aware that your great grandfather was in the 8th Welsh Regiment when he was killed? Not the Glos. Regt. as his cap badge in the only know photo of him shows. He arrived in Turkey on the Sunday and was killed on the Wednesday.

I suspect you are still in touch with Christine, parents Bill and Gwen, as your parents and hers were always close.

I live in South Oxfordshire at present. My e-mail address is chrisburnell@openfields.demon.co.uk.

My brother, John, (Ernest John Burnell) still lives in Bristol.

My mother was raised in foster care because her father was an abusive alcoholic and ended up in jail. We later learned that he was divorced three times for domestic abuse. My grandmother left her seven children home alone while looking for work. The neighbor called social services and they took the children, my mother was 6 months old at the time. She has met all of her siblings (several have sinced passed away) but never met her mother and sadly met her father on one or two ocassions.I guess I was hoping that I could learn something about Mom's family, grandparents, cousins or aunts and uncles.I have many cousins that I have never met.hank you for your response.

Susan

I am so sorry, Susan, but I know virtually nothing about my grandfather's siblings' families. My grandfather was Clarence John Burnell, he was born in Vermont. He had four siblings of which your grandfather Ernest is one of them. My father, Richard John, was Clarence's second child. His mother was Madeline Williams. Dad never talked about his family and when we would go to Pittsfield to see other relatives, we only saw Grampa Burnell and my father's siblings. None of his aunts, uncles, or cousins. My grandmother Burnell died of breast cancer in 1953.My father was always very angry about the way my grandfather treated my grandmother during her illness. I also know that Dad did not get along with one of his cousins and there was a major fight between them, but I do not know what it was about. I have absolutely no idea why your mom would have been put into foster care. How terrible. I certainly heard nothing about that. I have one surviving uncle on that side of the family. I will contact him and see if he knows anything about your mom's circumstances or if he has contact with any one who could help you. Please email me at maryburnell@bellsouth.net so I can reply directly to you after I hear from him. So glad to meet another cousin!

Dear Steve Norton 27,
I am a great granddaughter of Ellen Marie Burnell Davidson.
In her later years Ellen lived with my grandparents Roll and Nellie Davidson in North Platte, NE. Roll and Nellie's daughter and my mother June Davidson Brott has many good memories and stories of her grandmother Ellen Davidson. I would very much like to correspond and share pictures, especially of the NE homestead. I have heard so much about it but we don't have a picture. My mother remembers Faye and talks about her. My mother passed down to me a signature quilt made by Ellen Marie Davidson. It has the names of all of her children embroidered on it. I would be very happy to share photos of the quilt.
Judy Brott Buss

Edward Francis Burnell was born on or about 9 Dec 1878 in Cherico Vermont. He was married to Josephine Billings (1888-1949). Most of his children moved to Pittsfield MA. There were four boys and 1 daughter. I am looking for Edward's parents. They may have been Joseph and Hester Burnell, but I am not sure. I am also looking to move the ancestral line further back. My father felt like that the family prior to settling in Vermont, may have been from the Montreal area of Canada. Would appreciate any help from fellow Ancestry.com members.

Was your great-grandmother Leona DeWitt? If so, she was married to my grandfather, Clarence Burnell. Clarence's first wife (my grandmother) was Madeline Williams. They had four children: Mildred, Richard (my father), Robert, and Bernard. All four children were born in Pittsfield MA. Clarence was born in Vermont and his parents were Edward Burnell and Josephine Billings. Further back from there, I have not been able to go on the Burnell side. My father thought that previous to Vermont, the family might have been from the Montreal area. I know very little of your great-grandmother except that she was married to my grandfather and that for a while, she was both mother-in-law and step-mother to my Uncle Robert (he was married to Sandra Carlton whose mother was Leona DeWitt). Hope this helps.

Lester E. Burnell - LaSalle Co. IL to Fort Smith, Arkansas before 1920

The 1920 Census shows Lester Burnell living with his parents, Samuel J and Lina H Burnell, in Fort Smith, AR. Lester is listed as 25 years old and a mechanic at an auto shop. Prior to living in Arkansas, the 1910 Census shows probably the same person - but with a name of "Lesley" and the family is living in Streator, LaSalle Co., IL.
If any of this information sounds like something in your family, I'd sure like to hear about it.
Reason? There's a good possibility Lester Burnell was born Leslie E. Gyger in Bureau Co., IL AUg 7, 1894, the son of Edwin E. and Lina H. (Olmstead) Gyger. Edwin Gyger died in 1896 and Lina remarried in 1897.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
Larry Gyger
Lsgyger@atlanticbb.net

The names William Frederick Simmonds and Clara Simmonds aren't in my family tree I'm afraid. I've got William Simmonds born in 1835 who married Georgiana Burnell in 1856. I only know about 1 son - Samuel or Saul Simmonds who was born in 1863. My Simmonds family is Anglo Indian and William Simmonds was in the Madras Native Infantry. Hope this is some help to you.
I am investigating the Simmonds family in India - my mother's grandmother was Clara Simmonds (or Margaret Clara), who came to the UK from India in the early 1900's I think. Mother's father was William Frederick Simmonds and he served with the British Army in the 1919 Afghan conflict (something to do with horses).

My sister has been there for about thirty years but my brother just moved a few years ago from Michigan.

Regarding our origin, I received information that our family is Akan People of Ghana. This was determined through DNA testing on one of our male Burnell relatives. If you know anyone who went to the Family Reunion this past Summer in Michigan, they should have a copy of our Tree.

Hope that helps cuz!

It is good to hear that you have an Aunt that may still hold some information that could prove very useful. Please see if she has any information regarding the family origins. I believe that the Burnell's were from Alabama. There is some question as thier ethnic origins African, Caucasian and possibly Native American. In addition, to Ispham's brother Nimrod who is my Great Great Grandfather. They lived on farms next to one another in Leake Township, Nevada County, Arkansas in the 1870 census.
Thanks for your response. I was unable to attend the Burnell reunion in Michigan this past summer. Queen Esther Zackery Yarbourough and Mrs. Odessa Burnell Zackey gave me a copy of the family history for Isom's family.

One of things I have had done is to have a DNA test done to determine where in Africa the male (Isam and Nimrod) Burnell family may have come from. Ernest Burnell who lives in Saginaw, Michigan, did the test for me. From the test completed by African Ancestry, the male Burnells share an ancestry with the Akan people of Ghana.

I will keep in touch. You can email me directly at fohaywood@sbcglobal.net.

Lets keep in touch and share that info on the family.
My first name is Frances but I am called Delores by the family.

Delores
Thanks for your response regarding Isom. After speaking with another line of the Burnell family, we have decided that Isom/Isphan was a brother of Nimrod, my great great grandfather. I had the opportunity to meet Odessie Burnell Zackery of Stephen, Arkansas. Her father John Lilly Burnell was a grand or great grandson of Isom Burnell. I have been given a copy of that line (John Lilly Burnell) genealogy.

I visited the Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Stephens Arkansas where Nimrod, Ed and Ispham are buried. The spelling on the tombstone for Isom is Ispham.

If I didn't include the info in a previous email. My grandmother was Cora Burnell Hughes, daugher of Ed Burnell and her father Ed was a son of Nimrod. The relative who help me to reach this relationship decision great great grandmother was Harriet Burnell a daughter of Nimrod. Harrriet Burnell married Haril Kendrick.

I would be more than please to share my information about the Nimrod side of the family. However I have not quite figured out how to do the email of the data correctly.

I hope to keep in touch. You can emai me directly at fohaywood@sbcglobal.net.

I am Delores to the family because I was named after my mother also a Frances.

Take Care,
Delores Owens Haywood

Yes we are, it appears we would be 4th cousins. Nimrod Burnell was my Great Great Grandfather and he and Isham (Isom) Burnell were brothers. Nimrod’s daughter Harriet was my Great Grandmother who married Haril Kendrick. They migrated to the Paris, Texas area after the 1900 census. By the 1960’s my grandfather Benjamin Harrison Kendrick (son of Haril and Harriet) and his children migrated to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where my father Ezell Kendrick currently resides. Would like to find out more about Isham's side of the family...please feel free to contact me.

Hey Cheryl,

My aunt Geneva who lives in Michigan knows (knew) the names of all her aunts and uncles...which would be the offsprings of Isom and Eugenie Burnell. I have not worked on this for a number of years but recll her saying there was lots of girls born to that union. I will call her to see if she can still remember their names. She is the oldest of union between Godfrey Burnell and Carrie Burnell (nee) Moss (my grands)
