PART OF STATE)

THE BURNERS By Olive Burner, Carthage IL Mr. Burner (the first ancestor in America) brought with him from Germany all the money he possessed, and as banks and safety vaults were unknown in those days, he placed his money in the pockets of an old worn out pair of trousers and hung them on the wall of the cabin. One day they were startled by the yells of approaching Indians and in their great haste to get away the money was forgotten. The Indians searched in vain for the occupants of the cabin and went away, and when the family returned found the money undisturbed. Miss Burner thinks this first ancestor's name was Jacob. I find that a Jacob Burner obtained land on the left bank of the river in 1777 not far from the Mouth of the Hawksbill and not far from the Rhodes home. This was not his first deed, probably, as he was no doubt in this locality much earlier than this. The old Burner home is located opposite the mouth of Lick Run. The old chimney still stands over the vaulted celler. From the Shenandoah Co. marriage records she found the following: Joseph Burner m. Ann Rhodes Mar. 13, 1783. John Rodes (Rhodes) m. Catherine Brewbaker, Mar. 25 1783.

From the History of the Hiner Family
1712-1981
The History of the Burner Family
Jacob Burner, another of our early immigrrant ancestors, was born in Holland. He was a Mennonite and his famify was probably originally from Switzerlend, escaping to refuge in Holland arter suffering endless presecution. He was married before 1750 in Virginia to Madley Bumgardner who was a daughter of John Bumgardner, also Mennonite.
Jacob and Madley Burner were the parents of fourteen children which are as follows: Ann or Anna who married Benjamin Ruffner; Jacob Jr. who married Anna; Mary who was married to Jacob Beam; Elizabeth who married Peter Ruffner; Magdalena who married John Hiner; John, who went to North Carlina; Barbara who married John Stover; Joseph who mar-ried Ann Rhodes; Christina who married Samuel Strickler; Esther; Katherine who married David Bumgardner; Franky who married Peter Bumgardner; Samuel who married Mary Stover; and Michael who married Magdalena Gefeller.
Jacob was very active in the Mennonlte church. He is found quite often in the old court records appraising the estate of deceased Mennonites. He was obviously a man who had the trust of his community.

To any and all Burner researchers. My oldest direct Burner ancestor is Jacob Burner/Borner of Shenandoah County,VA (early 1700's) which became Page County in 1831. We have believed that Erhardt/Arehart Burner may have been his brother as they so-signed wills etc for each other. We have never found proof. You all might find some help at Judy Campbells website on Page County; Mountain View Rearch:.
www/rootsweb.com/~vapage/contents.htm

I don't know if I can help anyone but there is a Burner/Kibler connection and I have some of the direct lines on the Kibler family back several generations. I will look forward to hearing from you all. Please feel free to email me directly.

Blessings.........lila burner housden

James R. Burner, born Virginia abt 1862

My grandmother, born in 1868, lived in Allen Co., Indiana, and was descended from a Shenandoah Co. Crabill family. In 1889 and 1889, she received two letters from a James R. Burner, who apparently was a potential beau of hers. These are not yet "love letters", but just friend to friend - however in the latter one, he indicates he would like to see her, would like to have her picture, and forgot how pretty she was. My grandmother did not end up marrying James R. Burner - but kept them in her box of letters received from her parents through the years, and all of them were passed on to my mother when Grandma died.

I have the ORIGINAL 1888 and 1889 letters from James R. Burner, one from "Seven Bridges, Virginia" and mailed from Edenburg - and the other from "Seven Fountains, Virginia".
I did a census search for James R. Burner, and find that he was born about 1862 in VA.

My mother is gone now, and I would like to get these original letters back in the hands of descendants of James R. Burner, as it seems that is the most appropriate place for them to be. Please email me at margerice@prodigy.net

Good morning, Jen...
Israel Benjamin Burner was my husband's great-grandfather. His tombstone is across the road from the home they lived in along the Shenandoah River in Overall, VA. It is a tiny "home-cemetery" on a little knoll. The house is now a bed and breakfast called Riverbend...you can do a Google search on it and see photos of the restored Burner home. Directions to Riverbend will lead you to the small cemetery, which you won't find listed on cemeteries in Page County, etc. We have been there and taken photos if you would like me to send some to you.
Wow--what a neat picture. Do you own it? Are you connected to the Burners? I'm thinking this is not the Jacob Burner we were talking about in the above e-mail. He died before 1790 in Shenandoah Co, VA. However, I'm thinking that it is probably his grandson, the son of Joseph Burner and Ann Rhodes. I have that that Jacob Burner was born in Page Co, VA about 1784. Since he is an old man in the picture, it could very possibly be him. What do you think?

Someday they will all fit in to the big picture of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.
I have the daughter of Isaac and Barbara as Mary Elizabeth Burner born 11 Nov 1808 and died 1847. She was married to John Cool. The bond date for their marriage was 09 August 1837 in Rockingham County, Virginia (bond date). That is all of the info I have on Mary Elizabeth.

Hi John,
I've just read your post for the first time. Israel B. Burner was my husband's great-grandfather. I may have met your great-grandparents when we visited the Burner home by the Shenandoah River back in the 80s. Did they live in a small light green home right there on the property? Of course, this would be torn down now as the home has been restored and made into a B&B called the River Bend house. We went there with my husband's mother Virginia Evaline Burner Leedom who remembered going there as a child. We are also descendants of Martha Ann Cullers through her son Jonas. Let's continue to correspond! Kris Leedom

Does anyone know if the Isaac Burner who married Barbara Schrum in 1798 was later married to a woman named Elizabeth? I find an Isaac Burner in the 1850 and 1860 censuses in Rockingham County, Virginia, living with Elizabeth. In 1860 he is living next door to Samuel and Barbara Niswander, who I think is the daughter of Isaac Burner and Barbara Schrum.
